Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the status of the current Brazilian regulations regarding the Brazilian Air Force (BAF) operations during disaster response compared with the real BAF operations in the landslides that affected the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2011. This analysis reveals the evolutions and challenges that warrant further discussion, even six years after the deadliest disaster in recent Brazilian history. Design/methodology/approach The research is structured using a case study method and a process approach. The data gathered from official BAF reports and professionals and BAF regulations are compared using a theoretical reference process model as a guide. Findings The spread of documentations and laws that prescribe the BAF operations during disaster response limit the replication of BAF standards in future disasters. Among the 96 processes described in the theoretical reference process model, 12 processes that are identified in the BAF reports and interviews that address the response to the Rio landslides of 2011 remain unaddressed in the BAF regulations. Considering the BAF expertise, three additional processes are suggested for future consideration in the reference process model that guided this research. Research limitations/implications This paper does not discuss the collaborative perspective of BAF operations with other military forces and stakeholders in disaster response. Practical implications The findings are indications of improvement in BAF regulations. Originality/value In addition to providing an analysis of the military force operations in response to a massive disaster, this paper can also serve as a reference for a benchmark discussion of military operations in disaster response.

Abstract:
One of the world's largest economies. The 'B' in the BRICS power anagram. Host of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Showcasing a sustainable economic growth and a burgeoning middle class, Brazil hopes to occupy the centre of the next economic frontier. Consistent with this narrative, civil aviation enjoyed a meaningful growth in the last decade's infrastructure boom. Brazilian airlines, however, remain awfully inefficient and lag behind their competitors in the international market. This article submits that the liberalization of the foreign ownership and control restrictions would operate to the benefit of the air transport industry in Brazil. It suggests a double step approach to achieve liberalization: (i) an amendment to the Brazilian Aeronautic Code for domestic law purposes and (ii) the renegotiation of the existing Air Services Agreements in order to change the designation clauses in certain agreements. To support its contentions, this article offers a review of the relevant literature applied to Brazil and analysis of empirical evidence, including the review of the designation language contained in eighty-eight Air Services Agreements entered into by Brazil and in force as of November 2013, and the corporate structure adopted by the 2010 LATAM merger.

Abstract:
Introduction In order for an ergonomic assessment to be comprehensive, it must include the workers’ perception in the process of identifying and eliminating risks, aimed at improving their health, and living and working conditions. Objective To assess the perception of pilots from the Brazilian Air Demonstration Squadron (EDA) regarding their own work. Materials and methods This was a qualitative cross-sectional study of descriptive nature. A semi-structured interview was conducted with all EDA pilots, whose answers were recorded and later transcribed and categorized according to the method of content analysis proposed by Bardin. Results Mean age was 34 ± 4 years and mean time at EDA, 24 ± 21 months. Response categorization demonstrated that heat was the most commonly cited external factor, followed by Gz force. Regarding physical overload, the most common complaint regarded the upper right limb during flight. Considering physical overload during flight, rotating the control stick laterally was the most commonly mentioned maneuver. Communication among group members during work (both administrative and in flight) was perceived by most as open and direct. Conclusion The pilots’ perception allowed a broad assessment of their working conditions, which can help direct specific future assessments (i.e. biomechanical) and interventions that can ensure health gains and maintenance for this population. The current study provided great insight into the working conditions of Brazilian Air Force demonstration pilots, leading to the possibility of providing them with better health care.

This article introduces and explores the case of a Brazilian Air Force Organisation, the Aeronautical Economy and Finance Secretariat, which based on different findings provided by knowledge management (KM) research, started a broad strategic transformation process to address KM specific issues while improving organisational performance. The case description is complemented by theory regarding strategic management applied to public organisations to underpin the perception that, for such organisations, not driven by market variables, KM may exert a positive influence as a trigger to strategic changes rather than other performance related aspects.

Abstract:
Abstract. No hurricane is detected in the tropics off the Brazilian coast due to the lack of initial conditions (e.g., the weak vertical shear of horizontal wind) despite that high sea surface temperature is available. According to previous studies, the initial conditions (as the ingredients of hurricane's embryo) are related so that the thick warm-and-moist layer (due to the updraft vapour) below a cold-and-dry layer frames the convective instability which enhances diabatic processes accompanied by tropical cyclones with the weak vertical shear. So the basic question is how, starting with an internal-disturbance-free balance-situation, external forces create the rapidly-upward acceleration of moist air at the warm sea surface. The answer is revealed by the vertical-momentum equation which shows that boosted by the external-force-induced significant lower-layer equatorial westerly wind (LLEWW), the upward (unit-mass) acceleration could be as significant as the midlatitude Coriolis force. Besides creating cyclonic vortices through the upward acceleration and diabatic processes, the external-force-induced significant-LLEWW could directly create cyclonic wind shears along with easterly jets for the low-level cyclonic vorticity through reducing the peak value of zonally-homogeneous trade easterlies (centered at the Equator between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere subtropical high-belts). We emphasize external forces to avoid the ''chicken-and-egg'' problem accompanying nonlinear interactions of internal-forcing processes. The external-force-induced significant-LLEWW could result from the deflection of the cross-equatorial flow characterized by the seasonal shift coincident with that of locations of most embryos. This significant cross-equatorial flow is driven by the significant differential heating between the largest continent with the highest plateau and the largest ocean with the warm pool located to the east and on the equatorward side of the continent on the rotating Earth. Unfortunately, in the tropics off the Brazilian coast, the differential heating is weak between the relatively-small ocean and land mostly covered by tropical rainforest. No significant-LLEWW means no hurricane's embryo. A warm spawning ground without the embryo means no hurricane. Our investigation suggests that the external-force-induced significant-LLEWW embedded in the significant trade easterlies over the warm ocean be necessary and sufficient for making the embryo originate in an internal-disturbance-free balance-situation.

Abstract:
A questionnaire was conducted in the field with the cadets of the Brazilian Air Force Academy, and its main objective was to verify their perception of the food provided by the military organization, in order to understand which kinds of food were considered positive and negative foods for wellbeing and their daily physical performance, and how the food supplied affects their routine in any aspect. The research was carried out with 130 participants, through a questionnaire of unstructured qualitative analysis and word association technique. Participants were approached shortly after lunch, inside the mess hall. The results showed that the majority of cadets classified as positive or negative foods in terms of taste and not for their nutritional value. The cadets have also correlated food to physical and mental wellbeing and affirmed that a good meal directly affects their routine.

Abstract:
SummaryThe timing and origin of Zika virus (ZIKV) introduction in Brazil has been the subject of controversy. Initially, it was assumed that the virus was introduced during the FIFA World Cup in June–July 2014. Then, it was speculated that ZIKV may have been introduced by athletes from French Polynesia (FP) who competed in a canoe race in Rio de Janeiro in August 2014. We attempted to apply mathematical models to determine the most likely time window of ZIKV introduction in Brazil. Given that the timing and origin of ZIKV introduction in Brazil may be a politically sensitive issue, its determination (or the provision of a plausible hypothesis) may help to prevent undeserved blame. We used a simple mathematical model to estimate the force of infection and the corresponding individual probability of being infected with ZIKV in FP. Taking into account the air travel volume from FP to Brazil between October 2013 and March 2014, we estimated the expected number of infected travellers arriving at Brazilian airports during that period. During the period between December 2013 and February 2014, 51 individuals travelled from FP airports to 11 Brazilian cities. Basing on the calculated force of ZIKV infection (the per capita rate of new infections per time unit) and risk of infection (probability of at least one new infection), we estimated that 18 (95% CI 12–22) individuals who arrived in seven of the evaluated cities were infected. When basic ZIKV reproduction numbers greater than one were assumed in the seven evaluated cities, ZIKV could have been introduced in any one of the cities. Based on the force of infection in FP, basic reproduction ZIKV number in selected Brazilian cities, and estimated travel volume, we concluded that ZIKV was most likely introduced and established in Brazil by infected travellers arriving from FP in the period between October 2013 and March 2014, which was prior to the two aforementioned sporting events.

Abstract:
The process of data assimilation, in which meteorological observations and weather forecasts are merged to provide an analysis field, has been largely studied by the scientific community and operational centers. The 3D-Variational (3D-Var) approach available in the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) computer model is evaluated for data assimilation for the Terminal Control Area of Rio de Janeiro (TCA-RJ). The basic goal of any variational data assimilation system is to produce an optimal estimate of the atmospheric state at analysis time. The analysis field is estimated from a first guess (previous forecast) and an observation field, weighted by the error matrices. The WRF is designed for nowcasting (forecasts up to 6h) for the TCA-RJ through assimilation cycles using surface, sounding, and wind profile data. The preliminary results show the model sensibility for each observation type and encourage the use of this technique operationally for the support of the air traffic management controlled by the Brazilian Air Force.

The study aims to analyze the influence of gender on the relationship between Work-Family Enrichment (ETF and EFT), Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCC) and the possible moderating effects that EFT may have on the ETF's relations with the dimensions of the CCO scale among Brazilian Air Force military personnel. Through a quantitative study, the analyzes were performed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and multigroup analysis (MGA) method. The results demonstrate that the relationship between the dimensions of the ETF and the dimensions of the CCO are equal between genders. However, the research makes it possible to know the characteristics that contribute to the Work-Family Enrichment process and to the manifestation of Organizational Citizenship Behavior.

Abstract:
Collocations have a great potencial to the understanding of meanings, senses and concepts of words or terms they compound. In this article, we studied the collocations of the terms “segurança” in Portuguese, and “safety” and “security” in English, in aviation language. Our aims were to search for a better understanding of the studied conceptual units, and to offer a discussion about the role of collocations in Terminology. We built two comparable corpora, one with Portuguese texts from the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency and the Brazilian Air Force, and another one with English texts from the International Civil Aviation Organization. We focused on the main collocations of the three terms in Portuguese and in English. The theoretical frame we adopted was the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CABRÉ, 1999) and we used the techniques of Corpus Linguistics (TAGNIN, 2010, 2013; BERBER SARDINHA, 2000) to design our methodology, assisted by the software WordSmith Tools, version 6.0. (SCOTT, 2012). We found noun and adjective collocations. The study is addressed to professionals, teachers and tranlators who make use of aviation language. Abstract:
Goal: The main purpose of this research is to present the benefits reached with the use of airpower resources during humanitarian operations, in order to verify how the main airpower’s characteristics influenced the response stage of a natural disaster in Brazil. Design / Methodology / Approach: A qualitative case study was conducted to evaluate benefits reached with the use of airpower during humanitarian operations. Primary and secondary data were gathered from operational reports provided by the Brazilian Air Force, from media coverage about the flood and waterlogging events happened in November 2008, in Itajai Valley, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Interviews with three informants involved in crisis response were also conducted. Data analysis processes were conducted to search codes about airpower engagement during humanitarian operations. Data coding followed an inductive approach and the codes emerged from data. Results: The research concludes that the use of airpower can leverage crisis response capabilities during humanitarian operations, as airpower’s characteristics of speed, mobility, flexibility, penetration, range, and readiness meet the needs of humanitarian operations to respond to a natural disaster. The case study demonstrates an increase of operational capabilities after airpower engagement. Limitations of the investigation: Only one crisis situation was studied, because the access to operational data provided by the Brazilian Air Force is restricted. Besides, it was not possible to analyze values and budgetary costs derived from airpower engagement. Practical implications: The results of this research demonstrate that it is highly important to involve airpower during humanitarian operations, as it can leverage crisis response capabilities. In this way, humanitarian organizations can stablish new forms of relationship to national and local governments in order to quickly engage airpower resources on the response phase of natural disasters. Originality/Value: This research presents an original contribution to the field of humanitarian operations as it presents real data in terms of the engagement of airpower resources during humanitarian operations.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The coronavirus epidemic originated in China, having its epicenter in Wuhan. This was the first place in the world to adopt social distancing measures to contain the disease on January 23rd, 2020. After the initial isolation, several countries started making diplomatic plans to evacuate and repatriate their citizens, with the permission of the Chinese authorities. Due to the high risk of exposure of the transported passengers, evacuations were conducted with preventive measures against contamination by biological agents.CASE REPORT: We report the air evacuation of 39 passengers from China to Brazil. Five passengers were transported to Poland and the remaining 34 went to Brazil, where they remained in quarantine for 14 d. The mission was triggered on February 4th, named “Operation Return to Brazil” (Operação Regresso à Pátria Amada Brasil), and conducted by military personnel of the Brazilian Air Force. The mission was accomplished in 6 days; the flight from Wuhan lasted 25 h 20 min; and, additionally, there were on-ground preparations.DISCUSSION: Only with adequate isolation and protective measures was it possible to air evacuate the potentially contaminated passengers in the initial phase of the pandemic. Specific protective equipment (Personal Protective Equipment – PPE) is mandatory for missions in which the properties of the potentially contagious biological agent are not fully known, as was the case. Due to the risk of contamination of passengers and the likely evolution of the transport into an aeromedical evacuation, protocols stating the minimum safety conditions for this kind of patient transport must be followed, with consideration for the patient as well as the crew.Gomes ED, Ronconi MABR, Santos MB, Júnior PP, Franco AZP, Haberland DF, Borges LL. Abstract:
<p>Explosions emanating from terrorist attacks or military weapons cause damage to civilian and military facilities. Understanding the mechanical behaviour of reinforced concrete structures subjected to blast is of paramount importance for minimizing the possible blast damage. A full-scale experimental program consisting of six reinforced concrete slabs with compressive strengths of 60 MPa, 50 MPa and 40 MPa, measuring 1.0 m × 1.0 m × 0.08 m, and subjected to 2.7 kg of non-confined plastic bonded explosive, was conducted in blast test area of Science and Technology Aerospace Department (Brazilian Air Force). This paper compares experimentally measured peak displacement values with theoretical values. Theoretical analysis was carried out using single degree of freedom (SDOF) models. The comparison showed that SDOF analysis worked very well in predicting the reinforced concrete slab peak displacement against blast effects. Qualitative analysis after the experiments showed that the blast wave shape generated by the cylindrical explosive was not uniformly distributed on the slabs for the standoff distance of 0.927 m∕kg1/3.<br /><br /></p>

Abstract:
Purpose The experimental modal analysis requires good knowledge of various engineering fields, such as mechanical vibrations, transducers used in vibration measurement, transducers and system calibration methods, data acquisition systems, digital signal processing and system identification. Test facilities constitute a key factor for improving the quality of the estimated modal model. This paper aims to describe the experimental facilities at the Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE) Modal Testing Laboratory in terms of associated instrumentation and data acquisition system, metrological aspects and computational resources. The discussion is completed with a practical application showing a ground vibration testing (GVT) of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Design/methodology/approach The experimental facilities were evaluated in a typical GVT, using three shakers in both vertical and horizontal excitations and 88 response measurement points. The global excitation method was used to excite all desired modes. The reliability of the experimental modal model was validated by an auto modal assurance criterion matrix for the measured modes of the structure. Findings The experimental facilities were successfully used for validating the dynamical characteristics of the UAV under testing. Originality/value The modal test facilities of the Modal Testing Laboratory at the IAE, the main research center of the Brazilian Air Force, are described in this paper.

Abstract:
Abstract This article seeks to make a study of the balance of power in South America through a quantitative and qualitative survey of 15 power indicators: (1) size of the population; (2) size of gross domestic product; (3) the Correlates of War (COW); (4) the absolute defense spending; (5) the percentage of GDP spent on defense; (6) the total number of personnel in the active military; (7) the total personnel in Armies; (8) the total personnel in Marine; (9) the total personnel in the Air Force; (10) the total number of armored vehicles; (11) the total number of artillery pieces; (12) total figure of submarines; (13) total figure of war vessels; (14) the total number of combat aircrafts; and (15) the index Global Fire Power. Based on the indicators commonly used in the literature to measure power, as the size of GDP, the COW and defense spending - indicators used by Wohlforth (1999 and 2009) to support the US unipolarity, Brazil was also a unipolar power in South America. However, when we add other specific indicators to measure the current military capability of South American states, we see the Brazilian tendency to unipolarity does not hold. There is a large gap, in comparative terms, between the Brazilian Armed Forces and the other South American actors, taking into account their territorial size, population and GDP. Taking these indicators into account, we could describe the system as an unbalanced multipolarity. Even if there is a re-equipment program of its armed forces, Brazil is not the only one to do so. This may indicate that, as it was observed in the global system with the United States in the post-Cold War, the Brazilian unipolarity may be a short-term phenomenon, although most indicators show that, from the beginning of the century to 2013, Brazilian capabilities were rising.

Abstract:
Since the last century, concrete has been used to protect structures against intentional or accidental detonation of explosives. Recently, as concerns about terrorist activities and accidents in plants using explosives increase worldwide, the study of the behaviour of this type of material and any civil or military structure under the influence of explosions has increased. Among the lethal effects of explosive devices, which cause greater loads in structural elements is the airblast effect. For this reason, this paper presents a series of airblast finite element (FEM) simulations developed in Abaqus/Explicit®. To validate the computational method, such simulations are geometrically and structurally kept similar to full-scale tests conducted in a blast test area of the Science and Technology Aerospace Department (Brazilian Air Force). Both simulations and tests consisted of seven reinforced concrete slabs with compressive strengths of about 40 to 60 MPa, variable steel reinforcement areas, slab dimensions measuring 1×1 m, and subjected to 2.7 kg of non-confined plastic bonded explosive. The results demonstrated that FEM simulations can predict the rupture of the tested slabs and how the effect occurs, showing a valid method to investigating the response of RC slabs when compared to expensive field tests. Differences in displacements were observed between the results of FEM simulations and blast field tests, mainly caused by the sensitivity of the case studied, limits of computational capacity, and intrinsic variations in the materials and sensors used in the field tests. However, these differences showed an order of magnitude compatible with the safety coefficients used with RC, demonstrating that the method can be used for the design of RC slabs under the effect of airblast.

Abstract:
The concrete material has many advantages as high durability, low permeability, weather resistance and high compressive strength. These qualities have led its application to the rainwater collection since the pipes are usually buried, subject to compressive forces and exposed to the action of water. However, the concrete has some limitations, as, for example, low resistance to tensile stress, high self-weight, ease of cracking and brittle behavior in rupture. Thus, many materials are being studied in order to be used as a new concrete component seeking to minimize its disadvantages. One of them is the tire rubber residue. This residue is a fibrous material that takes a long time to decompose and increases the amount of trash in landfills; but, it may give a greater deformation capacity and also a more effective distribution of stresses to the concrete. Furthermore, the tire rubber residue can provide an increase in energy absorption and a decrease in the propagation of cracks in the hardened state. However several studies mention that the inclusion of the waste rubber into the concrete causes a decrease in mechanical strength to compression, a decrease in the workability of the mixtures and an increased content of entrained air. Therefore, an analysis of the structural behavior of four (4) reinforced concrete pipes was made: two (2) of them was molded without tire rubber residue and the other two (2), with a quantity of residue equal to 20 kg per cubic meter of concrete. All the pipes had a nominal diameter of 600 mm and an effective length of 1500 mm; they were subject to the crushing test standardized by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards - NBR 8890 (ABNT, 2007) which is similar to the European standard NBN-EM 1616. The diametric displacements at the hub and at the spigot were monitored by the use of two dial gauge indicators. The applied force by a hydraulic jack was measured using a cell load. Finally, tests of water absorption using pieces of the tested pipes were performed, based on the recommendations of the NBR 8890 (ABNT, 2007).

Abstract:
AbstractCoastal areas provide critical nesting habitat for marine turtles. Understanding how artificial light might impact populations is key to guide management strategies. Here we assess the extent to which nesting populations of four marine turtle species—leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and two subpopulations of loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtles—are exposed to light pollution across 604 km of the Brazilian coast. We used yearly night-time satellite images from two 5-year periods (1992–1996 and 2008–2012) from the US Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Programme (DMSP) to determine the proportion of nesting areas that are exposed to detectable levels of artificial light and identify how this has changed over time. Over the monitored time-frame, 63.7% of the nesting beaches experienced an increase in night light levels. Based on nest densities, we identified 54 reproductive hotspots: 62.9% were located in areas potentially exposed to light pollution. Light levels appeared to have a significant effect on nest densities of hawksbills and the northern loggerhead turtle stock, however high nest densities were also seen in lit areas. The status of all species/subpopulations has improved across the time period despite increased light levels. These findings suggest that (1) nest site selection is likely primarily determined by variables other than light and (2) conservation strategies in Brazil appear to have been successful in contributing to reducing impacts on nesting beaches. There is, however, the possibility that light also affects hatchlings in coastal waters, and impacts on population recruitment may take longer to fully manifest in nesting numbers. Recommendations are made to further this work to provide deeper insights into the impacts of anthropogenic light on marine turtles.

We develop an equilibrium wage-posting model with heterogeneous firms that decide to locate in the formal or the informal sector and workers who search randomly on and off the job. We estimate the model on Brazilian labor force survey data. In equilibrium, firms of equal productivity locate in different sectors, a fact observed in the data. Wages are characterized by compensating differentials. We show that tightening enforcement does not increase unemployment and increases wages, total output, and welfare by enabling better allocation of workers to higher productivity jobs and improving competition in the formal labor market. Abstract:
Abstract Background Flexible endoscopes are complex-design reusable devices, with long and narrow channels, making reprocessing difficult. Biofilm formation is a key factor for persistent contamination, as it protects microorganism against cleaning and disinfection agents. The aim of this study was to assess the accumulation of biofilm on the inner surfaces of new flexible gastroscope channels after 30 days of patient-use and full reprocessing. Methods Three flexible gastroscopes (FG) (GIF–Q150, OlympusTM) with new internal channels (TeflonTM) were subjected to 30 days of clinical use and reprocessing by trained nursing personnel, using a revised reprocessing protocol, at the endoscopy service of a Brazilian teaching hospital (235 beds). The reprocessing protocol included: pre-cleaning; manual cleaning; automated cleaning and disinfection - 2% Glutaraldehyde; manual drying (forced-air drying) and alcohol rinsing, and storage in vertical position in exclusive cabinets. Then, internal channels were removed from the three patient-ready FG (three biopsy, three air, three water and three air/water junction channels), and the inner surface subjected to bacteriological culture (~30 cm) (n=9) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) (~1 cm) (n=12). Air/water junctions (~1 cm) were subjected to SEM only. Results The average of use/reprocessing of the FG was 60 times. Bacterial growth was detected in 6/9 channels (three from FG#1 showed residual moisture) and seven bacterial isolates were recovered, most from air or water channels (Fig 1). Inner surface structural damage was identified in 11/12 channels by SEM. Extensive biofilm was detected in air, water and air/water junction channels (7/12) (Fig 2). Residuals matter were detected in all channels (12/12). Fig 1. Abstract:
This paper presents results of the improvement of the lifetime of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) by encapsulation with polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS). This polymer is very effective in protecting the device from degradation in oxygen and moisture rich environments. This is captured in the results obtained for full immersion and storage tests of encapsulated single layer devices based on MEH:PPV as the active layer. Mechanical tests were carried out to ascertain the strength (adhesion) of the interface between the encapsulating layer and the device cathode material, aluminum (Al) using both centrally-cracked Brazilian Disk, CCBD and force microscopy techniques. The encapsulated devices provided an average of 90 minutes of illumination while the bare devices provided illumination for about 3 minutes. Such a reproducible stamping technique is more appropriate due to the low processing temperatures, inherent flexibility, device compatibility and mechanical robustness at low costs.

The push of Business Intelligence architecture usage was very important during this critical crisis moment to help on process standardization, data quality improvement and process automation. This article's objective is to demonstrate how the world crisis of 2008, 2009 and 2010 was a great opportunity to improve the usage of business intelligence architecture bringing benefits for a Brazilian chemistry industry.

Abstract:
The present study analyzes the impacts of global warming of 1.5ºC, 2ºC, and 4ºC above pre-industrial levels in the Brazilian territory. Climate change projected among the different global warming levels has been analyzed for rainfall, temperature and extreme climate indices. The projections are derived from the global climate model HadGEM3-A, from the High-End cLimate Impacts and eXtremes (HELIX) international project, from the United Kingdom, forced by sea surface temperature and sea ice concentration of a subset of six CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5) global climate models and considering the RCP 8.5 (Representative Concentration Pathways) emissions scenario throughout the 21st century. Projections indicate robust differences in regional climate characteristics. These differences include changes: in the minimum and maximum air temperature close to the surface to all the country’s regions, in extremes of heat, particularly in northern Brazil, in the occurrence of heavy rainfall (Southern and Southeastern regions), and in the probability of droughts and rain deficits in some regions (Northern and Northeastern Brazil).

Abstract:
Abstract In the Southern Hemisphere, a relatively well-known preferential pathway along which cold air surges equatorward is situated to the east of the Andes Mountains. In this study, a second preferred pathway is identified to the east of the African Highlands, with additional minor pathways identified east of the Brazilian Highlands and Madagascar. The primary objective of this study is to compare climatological and synoptic characteristics of extreme cold events (ECEs) along the Andes and African Highlands pathways. ECEs are defined as the top 1% coldest 925-hPa temperatures within the Andes and the African Highlands pathways using the 1977–2001 subset of the 2.5° × 2.5° 40-yr European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-Analysis (ERA-40). ECEs within the Andes and African Highlands pathways are associated with dynamically forced anticyclogenesis and have low-level characteristics that vary substantially. Along the Andes pathway, ECEs feature 925-hPa temperatures as much as 17°C below normal, with 925-hPa southerly winds ranging from 0 to 10 m s−1 and 925–700-hPa lapse rates as low as −3°C km−1. In contrast, ECEs along the African Highlands pathway feature 925-hPa temperatures up to 10°C below normal, with 925-hPa southerly winds ranging from 5 to 15 m s−1, and 925–700-hPa lapse rates generally between 2° and 5°C km−1. Composite analyses reveal that despite stronger southerly winds, ECEs along the African Highlands pathway are typically not as cold or stable as those along the Andes pathway because cold air from Antarctica must traverse a longer distance over water to reach Africa.

Abstract:
The tropical Atlantic Warm Pool is one of the main drivers of the marine intertropical convergence zone and the associated coastal Northeast Brazilian and West-African monsoons. Its meridional displacement is driven by the solar cycle, modulated by the atmosphere and ocean interactions, whose nature and respective proportions are still poorly understood. This paper presents a climatological study of the upper ocean and lower atmosphere contributions to the warm pool seasonal migration, using an Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM). First, we provide quantitative, albeit simple, pieces of evidence on how the large amplitude of migration in the west, compared to the east, is mainly due to the strong east–west contrast of the background meridional SST gradient intensities, which is maintained by equatorial and eastern tropical upwellings. Our main results consist first in identifying a diagnostic equation for the migration speed of the two meridional boundary isotherms of the Warm Pool, expressed in terms of the various mixed-layer heat fluxes. We then evidence and quantify how, in general, the migration is forced by air–sea fluxes, and damped by ocean circulation. However, remarkable controls by the ocean are identified in some specific regions. In particular, in the northwestern part of the Warm Pool, characterized by a large temperature inversion area, the boreal spring northward movement speed depends on the restitution of the solar heating by the thermocline. Additionally, over the southern part of the Warm Pool, our study quantifies the key role of the equatorial upwelling, which, depending on the longitude, significantly accelerates or slows down the summer poleward migration.

Abstract:
Abstract. The numerical climate simulations from the Brazilian Earth System Model (BESM) are used here to investigate the response of the polar regions to a forced increase in CO2 (Abrupt-4×CO2) and compared with Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) and 6 (CMIP6) simulations. The main objective here is to investigate the seasonality of the surface and vertical warming as well as the coupled processes underlying the polar amplification, such as changes in sea ice cover. Polar regions are described as the most climatically sensitive areas of the globe, with an enhanced warming occurring during the cold seasons. The asymmetry between the two poles is related to the thermal inertia and the coupled ocean–atmosphere processes involved. While at the northern high latitudes the amplified warming signal is associated with a positive snow– and sea ice–albedo feedback, for southern high latitudes the warming is related to a combination of ozone depletion and changes in the wind pattern. The numerical experiments conducted here demonstrated very clear evidence of seasonality in the polar amplification response as well as linkage with sea ice changes. In winter, for the northern high latitudes (southern high latitudes), the range of simulated polar warming varied from 10 to 39 K (−0.5 to 13 K). In summer, for northern high latitudes (southern high latitudes), the simulated warming varies from 0 to 23 K (0.5 to 14 K). The vertical profiles of air temperature indicated stronger warming at the surface, particularly for the Arctic region, suggesting that the albedo–sea ice feedback overlaps with the warming caused by meridional transport of heat in the atmosphere. The latitude of the maximum warming was inversely correlated with changes in the sea ice within the model's control run. Three climate models were identified as having high polar amplification for the Arctic cold season (DJF): IPSL-CM6A-LR (CMIP6), HadGEM2-ES (CMIP5) and CanESM5 (CMIP6). For the Antarctic, in the cold season (JJA), the climate models identified as having high polar amplification were IPSL-CM6A-LR (CMIP6), CanESM5(CMIP6) and FGOALS-s2 (CMIP5). The large decrease in sea ice concentration is more evident in models with great polar amplification and for the same range of latitude (75–90∘ N). Also, we found, for models with enhanced warming, expressive changes in the sea ice annual amplitude with outstanding ice-free conditions from May to December (EC-Earth3-Veg) and June to December (HadGEM2-ES). We suggest that the large bias found among models can be related to the differences in each model to represent the feedback process and also as a consequence of each distinct sea ice initial condition. The polar amplification phenomenon has been observed previously and is expected to become stronger in the coming decades. The consequences for the atmospheric and ocean circulation are still subject to intense debate in the scientific community.
