The intention of this dissertation is to reflect concerning the existing relations between literature and movies in which it touches the representation of the phenomenon of the violence in the literary compositions and its respective cinematographic versions. For this, three books had been used that present the violence focused for diverse prisms. They are: Estação Carandiru by Drauzio Varella, Cidade de Deus by Paulo Lins and O Invasor by Marçal Aquino. The examination made by theoreticians on the tenuous line that today divides reality from fiction was also boarded as one of the points of the dissertation development. The binominal violence/culture that seems one current trend in contemporary literature, gained incisive space in this analysis.

This work is intended to clarify what is Toy Art. A new expressive and market support that comes from designers and illustrators minds, that contains elements of urban art, street art, graffiti and Hip Hop culture in itself. It also contains confrontational elements of an active youth against myths and dogmas crystallized by previous generations. A new medium that brings up the urban city into its narrative, the street with its violence and acid moods, which suggests a close relationship between art and pop culture in its humorous narrative, that is at the same time subversive and violent. The world of these toys, originally produced in Japan and China, appears as a vinyl and a plastic world in the mid-1990s, and other materials have been incorporated during the worldwide expansion of its production and consumption. Political characters, pop icons and day by day events are some of the main targets of these object s narratives. Its subjects often seek the overthrow of myths and heroes, and yet, it deals with the fragile dividing line between childhood and adulthood. While studying the universe of Toy Art or Designer Toy, collecting, consumerism and post-modernism will be investigated, as well as particular characteristics of urban tribes. What is Toy Art? How this artistic and marketing platform developed since their appearance? What borders delimit its territory in the arts and design? How to set up its story? And how Toy Art operates and develops in Brazil?

Abstract: This thesis discusses the making process and understanding of the arts in Colonial Minas through an interpretation of the iconography developed by one of its greatest names: Manoel da Costa Athayde. Using as main sources the portrait of Brother Lawrence and the Supper, both paintings of Caraça Sanctuary, in Minas Gerais, we aim to identify, through the choices and appropriations made by Athayde, how a historic moment was setting itself through structural changes in the production field of the arts during the beginning of the eighteenth century

In his 1928 Manifesto Antropófago, the Brazilian poet and playwright Oswald de Andrade encouraged Brazilians to appropriate, consume, digest, and assimilate European theories and styles to enhance the Brazilian avant-garde. Oswald's theory of "cultural cannibalism," or Anthropophagy, has since been reinterpreted to serve various purposes in Brazilian art. In the early 1960s Anthropophagy was important to Neo-Concretists, who shifted the focus of the artwork to the viewer's body. The theory was then revived by the Tropicalists for its subversive nature and tactics of appropriation. Anthropophagy was immensely important to the generation of artists who worked during the Brazilian military regime in the 1960s and 1970s, who would use Anthropophagy as a model for appropriating elements of military rule to criticize the government. The themes of the Manifesto Antropófago are often evident in the works of Cildo Meireles, whose art seems to employ Anthropophagy as a conceptual model. In his investigation of the effects of consumerism, sensory perception, and imperialism and colonialism, Meireles employs the elements of appropriation and subversion that are part of an Anthropophagic legacy. Meireles' interest in Anthropophagy culminates in a utopian interpretation of the theory, and a redefinition of its significance in terms of Brazilian identity.

Abstract: The work analyzes the ¿imaginary landscapes¿ of Alberto da Veiga Guignard, examining their importance from the nineties on, and mainly in the context of his production. The proposal is to understand his works as a whole in their plastic and contextual qualities, dialoguing with the observations of the time and the most recent critic. Thus, the present thesis begins with a panorama of the intellectual context of Rio de Janeiro in the period when Guignard lived in this city (1929-1943), with a circle of writers orbiting around painter Ismael Nery and his influence on part of Guignard¿s production up to 1934, as well as, the theoretical, aesthetic and ideological concepts of the Brazilian Modernist Movement, in the debate of ideas exposed by Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade and Graça Aranha and in the indications of possible plastic and thematic solutions for the visual arts. Then, from the ¿popular portraits¿ of Guignard, this thesis verifies how his production is positioned in relation to the proposal of construction of the ¿brasílica¿ identity, investigating the development of the nationalist ideas of Mário de Andrade and his artistic options as art critic and, mainly, observing his acceptance of the work of Guignard. It is also mentioned, the positioning of the Brazilian critic in the 80s and 90s, which imposed new parameters with the revision of the modernism and tried to contemplate the work of Guignard on basis of new criteria, that were borrowed from models used to demarcate the aesthetic limits of the European and North American vanguards, that when confronted with the painting of Guignard, proved to be inadequate, at least when understood as univocal. The ¿landscapes¿ are, in this way, described as the part of the artist's production where there is the encounter of the mentioned interpretative keys, their plastic solutions along with the aesthetic thought and the ideological tensions. The ¿landscape¿ is the constitution of a theme where there is room for continuity of a national characterization, in an elaboration of specific space approach, inherent to his painting. With the idea of investigating these statements, there is a chapter especially dedicated to the analysis of the plastic content in the development of the landscapes of Guignard, starting from his ¿views¿ and the process of elaboration of his space characteristics: framing, positioning of the spectator from the distance and displacement of the depth in parallel plans. Finally, the research presents the process of imagination of the landscape, base of Guignard¿s poetics: in the crossing of a space approach that tends more and more to the verticalism inside of the pictorial plan and a derived thematic universe of the search for the ¿brasílica¿ identity. A process that unfolds itself inverting the direction of the glance, internalizing the contents and producing sceneries of intimacy

Abstract: I point out a possible relationship among performance, authorship and healing. For such a reason, I present the career and the analyses of works of art selected from creators of the art fields, respectively, from the visual arts, dance and theatre: Lygia Clark (BH, MG), Dudude Herrmann (BH, MG) e Enrique Diaz (RJ, RJ). The research showed that the works of those artists concerns about a transformation in the body¿s image. The act of recreating yourself, by the creative action, can be considered in its healing dimension. The concept pulse of fiction, by Sperber, can help to verify the hypothesis. Sperber points out the existence of the "universals" or the "basic knowledges": simbolization, efabulation and imagination. Those aspects that are "available to all and any human being" (SPERBER, 2009, p. 98) should be also awakened. As Sperber shows, since an early age the child feels that is necessary to create, in order to elaborate deep emotions and events experienced. The child evocates his or her own resources, such as the spoken language or body's performance, in the process of creation. This aptitude or necessity to elaborate the event experienced, by means of the fictional creation, is repeated in all ages of the human being. As an action to resist and looking for transformation, it would be necessary to stimulate, in an unrestricted way, the pulse of fiction, practicing authorship. The works of Herrmann, Diaz and Clark, shows in different artistic languages, authorial aspects, and also the value of the individual potential to creation. By means of analyses, some singular aspects of the works of those creators and theirs practices as teachers or directors are shown. The thesis shows relations of similarity and influence among the works of those Brazilian artists with some principles of work from the group Judson Dance Theater, of the 1960¿s, in New York, as well as other practices stimulated by this group such as Viewpoints and Six Viewpoints

Money laundering and corruption are deeply connected because the proceeds from corruption must be laundered and integrated into the market. Those crimes also have an international dimension. In the absence of international cooperation and standards, the process of anti-money laundering and corruption mitigation is at risk in domestic jurisdictions. This thesis presents the state of the art in this field, namely, how anti-money laundering policies can prevent corruption, based on the example of Brazilian jurisdiction in its application of international standards. Brazil gained attention with corruption cases as "Mensalão" or "Lava Jato", which affected how it was perceived internationally. We first analyse the concepts and contexts of corruption, money laundering, and compliance. We also analyse several referenced documents as Conventions and the Forty recommendations as these are international codes to criminalize money laundering. These documents allowed the development of anti-money laundering in a logic of compliance. Then, we use Brazil as a practical example to illustrate how standards can be implemented, as well as the associated challenges. By highlighting importance of a culture of compliance, this thesis contributes to the understanding of how international standards can help a country overcome corruption and to explain what can fail in the process of mitigation as a result of national political and societal behavioural challenges.

Full textThe objective of this research consisted in analysing four issues relevant to the comprehension of the painting of Heitor dos Prazeres.First, to know historically the environment where his works were created and the relation between the artist and the\"samba carioca\".Second, to collect critical analyses which proved the reception of his works of art.Third, to analyse traces or elements that could support the proximity of the invention of the artist with the imaginary of African heritage, which obtained great expression in Brazil and is usually defined as Afro-Brazilian art. Finally, a critical analysis of some important works produced by Heitor, associating them with the production of the Brazilian Art contemporaneous with the artist. To achieve our objectives successfully we used the collection of Fundação Bienal(File Wanda Svevo), the Contemporary Art Museum-USP(MAC), the Modern Art Museum of Sao Paulo(MAM SP), the Afro-Brazilian Museum, the Image and Sound Museum of Rio de Janeiro, the National Museum of Fine Arts of R. Janeiro, the Museum of Modern Art R. Para esta pesquisa, tomo como ponto de partida poéticas visuais e padrões gráficos presentes em algumas expressões tradicionais africanas bi e tridimensionais, especialmente a escultura e a estampa.
Abstract: This thesis aims to investigate dialogues with African ancestry and its poiesis that integrate contemporary and modern engraving and sculpture produced in Brazil during the twentieth century. The visual knowledge that here is built from these sources will be the motivation for such investigations. For this research, I take a visual poetics starting point alongside graphic patterns present in both bi and three-dimensional traditional African expressions. The time frame includes modern and contemporary productions in an attempt to identify and reflect on certain reconstruction processes of Brazilian artistic identities from African design. The identification of poetic elements and remaining design, both in sculpture and in engravings that relate to African culture in Brazil and their ancestry, whether as a starting point or as plastic and or conceptual inspiration, as well as the production processes and art distribution that undermine such artistic expressions, constitute structural basis for reflection on the artistic production of these authors.

It underlies this study that the difficulties of conceptualizing this many named Art - black, Afro-descendent, Afrooriented, diasporic etc. - and the multiple meanings given to it along the 20th century are related in an uncertain but constant way to the ambiguities of racial relations in Brazil. The chapters of this dissertation seek to explore the multiple uses, interpretations and definitions that give body and meaning, albeit uncertain to this notion. After all, when Afro-Brazilian Art is produced or talked about, what exactly is being produced or talked about? When an exhibition or museum are organized around the subject, what understandings and criteria are being used and also created?

Full textThe following essay has the objective of analyzing the work of Alberto da Veiga Guignard (1896 1962), especially focusing on his 1930s and 1940s trajectory, period on which his works most poetics aspects were constituted a lyric vocabulary linked to the prosaic and the esteem of the surface painting. The study searches how these aspects particularly the lyricism and the humble everyday life material can connect this painter to poets Manuel Bandeira and Murilo Mendes and, in another way, also with the imagination of the artist Ismael Nery, who, in some ways, dialogues with imaginary landscapes that strongly appear on Guignard. The dissertation discusses the work of this painter within the Brazilian Modernism, especially on what concerns the popularnational issues, present on Guignards paintings in a much more subtle and refracted way, as it is said, compared to his generations contemporaries Brazilian Modernists of the 1930s.

Abstract: In this research were analyzed three installations made by the Brazilian artist Rosângela Rennó ¿ Imemorial (1994-1995), In Oblivionem (1994-1995) and Hipocampo (1995) ¿ aiming to understand the artist's investigations about the photographic image and the implication of its uses when related to memory, displacement and aesthetics of disappearance concepts in contemporary art. Besides the mentioned works, the artist's work in progress Arquivo Universal (since 1992) is also considered in the analysis, once it consists in her personal collection of news articles which are usually consulted during the conception of her works. It¿s fundamental for this research the analysis of Rennó's position as a collector of ruins (wasted photos and other cultural remains) to problematize the tension between the two types of collection, which mean different ways to deal with time and history: there is the unique and affectionate dimension of the artist's collection as a memory practice ¿ fragmentary par excellence ¿ and the organization of her installations in spaces for art expositions (galleries and museums), where the historical linear discourse is predominant. The role of the artist, which is discussed during this research, coincides with the positive countertype of the collector, defined by Walter Benjamin as the one who discards the utility functions of the objects, connecting the action of collecting to a nonlinear dialectical perception of time. The artist's position is related to the disappearance concept thought by the cultural theorist and urbanist Paul Virilio, important for the analysis of the alterations Rosângela Rennó does in the images she appropriates

Abstract: The purpose of the present work is to analyze the religious painting of Fulvio Pennacchi produced between the years 1930 and 1945. First, we analyze the religious paintings themselves, regarding their theme and form. Given this analysis, we examine the presence of these religious paintings in the historical, social and artistic context of the city of São Paulo at the time of their production. The work is concerned with three main issues: the religious themes addressed by Pennacchi; the influence of the Trecento and Quattrocento in Pennacchi's religious paintings; the presence of Pennacchi's religious paintings in the years 1930-1945 and in São Paulo's artistic context of these years

Full textThis work intends to survey the different ways by which the surrealist movement was perceived by Brazilian modernist artists and writers, between the 1920s and 1940s. It starts with a presentation and discussion of documents and bibliography about the surrealist discourse on art and its relevance in the context of the movement. Afterwards, based on a selection of works by five Brazilian artists (Tarsila do Amaral, Cícero Dias, Ismael Nery, Jorge de Lima and Flávio de Carvalho) together with a set of documents (articles, letters, manifestoes) produced in Brazil during the period studied, it analyses the approaches and detachments between the Brazilian and French movements. In order to avoid either a simplistic confrontation or labeling the works discussed \"surrealists\", the analysis is made without putting aside a discussion about the insertion of each artist in the context of artistic and intellectual local debates in the period. From this methodological perspective, it is possible to observe how the potential interest in the surrealism expressed by each artist appears mediated by other interests, affined to those debates. Thereby it underlines the singularity of that interest and the objective form it has assumed in the production of each artist

Full textBrazilian-Judeo Gazes: The presence of Judaism in contemporary Brazilian art attempts to identify vestiges of Hebrew culture in Brazilian contemporary art. Jewish immigrants to Brazil during the 20th century brought with them, largely, a liberal Jewish thinking which influenced the relationship of the plastic arts in European Judaism. This present work stems from the hypothesis that the approximation of Judaism and the plastic arts had continuity in Brazil, once the Jewish immigrants coming from Europe and subsequent generations were able to successfully integrate themselves into Brazilian society. The central question, therefore, is to know the forms and types of content this cultural influence articulated with. Within, we present the first generation of Jewish artists in Brazil who provided important impulses for the development of modern art, and which served as the underlying fabric for the Jewish cultural and artistry evolution with its emancipated understanding from the biblical prohibition on the representation of images. However, except for Lasar Segall, distinct Jewish hallmarks in Brazilian art make their appearance only at the second half of the 20-century. Through the work of four selected Brazilian-Judeo artists, whose analysis does not intend to be absolutely complete and representative, there is in the central part of this thesis, verifiable Jewish elements in the artistic creation which standout as much for their formal aspects and content as their ethical and religious positions of the artists. From there a hybrid form of the culture resulted or, Brazilian-Judeo identity: olhares brasileiros judaicos (Brazilian-Judeo Gazes). The methodological aspects of this study are significant, in addition to interviews conducted with the artists, there are scientific treatises about Jewish art and Jewish artists that allow for a global contextualization of the subject.

To achieve this research purpose, the work aspects of five Brazilian artists were analysed and put into two different parts. In the first part, the study is directed to the artists who have worked as photographers: Arthur Omar, Rosângela Rennó, Rochelle Costi e Rubens Mano. With especial treatment, the whole second part is dedicated to Carlos Fajardo's work which makes this discussion wider by considering the photographic image contemplation as one of the elements of which the Contemporary Art is consisted.

Studies about cohort effects on the preferences of many cultural products reveled evidences for the existence of more sensitive period on the consumer s life, when tastes are developed and carried for the whole life. These conclusions show the alternative of cohort segmentation, give more information about consumer behavior, help in forecast demands and guide marketing actions. In brazilian context, there isn t cultural product with the same size, presence and relevance that idols of tv dramatic art on the general population. In a country with huge social-economical differences between classes, the distribution cultural vehicle stronger and more democratical, because there are in every social class, is the television, which has like its principal product the soap operas. Nothing is more popular on the brazilian TV then dramatic art. The role that it plays through its artists on the social life of brazilian consumers is undeniable, by invade with permition million of houses every day the TV dramatic art idols have enormous appeal on their target. It can be proved by the big number of publicity indorsement they realize. So, this research shows an empirical investigation, in which men and woman express their preferences for male and female idols of brazilian TV dramatic art, to verify if cohort effects affects these preferences. In this way, not only contributes to enlarger the scopes of works already did in this area but too through the conclusions presented, which corroborate the theory, can give subsidies for marketing professionals to increase the efficacy of publicity stimulus.

Abstract: This Ph.D. dissertation consists of a several points of investigations, with three main areas of inquiry being especially pertinent. The first is a brief review of the presence of Afro-descendent artists in the history of art in Brazil with the intention of both remembering and revealing people of this category. Moreover, I address how the visual arts produced by Afro-descendents were observed, registered, and documented over two decades by researchers, critics, and historians. The second inquiry proposes a reflection over the exportation and adoption of the term "afro-brazilian" from the United States of America to Brazil in the field of visual studies. The adoption of the terminology "afro-brazilian" has resulted in the categorization of work produced by Brazilians artists of afro-descent into a group based on a shared afro-descendent identity. Furthermore, "afro-brazilian" has been further used for the purposes of labeling thematic research, concepts, aesthetics and/or poetics surrounding the questions related to the history of the afro-descent population. Lastly, the third seeks to present and analyze the production of Brazilian and United States afro-descendent artists who demonstrate interest in creating works which visualize and dialogue with circumstances of the African diaspora or, simply, with their African roots. The presentation and analysis of these works were completed chronologically, with particular attention placed on observing the biographies, themes, and research interests of the selected artists. In this way, I have comprised a body of afro-descendent artists who, due to their related interests and artistic practice, construct an art genre of afro-Brazilians, afro-Americans, or even, African (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

It analyses not only his writings on art but also the presence of the visual arts in his poetry books Pau Brasil [Brazil Wood] (1925) and Primeiro caderno do aluno de poesia Oswald de Andrade [First notebook of the poetry student Oswald de Andrade] (1927), as well as in the novels Os Condenados [The Doomed] (1922- 1934) and Marco Zero [Ground Zero] (1943-1945). This work also discusses the relationships the writer had with Brazilian and foreign artists, as well as his participation in relevant situations involving the visual arts in Brazil, such as the Semana de Arte Moderna [Modern Art Week]; Tarsila do Amaral\'s first exhibition in Brazil; the Clube dos Artistas Modernos [Modern Art Club]; the Salões de Maio [May Salons]. The aim is to examine how Oswald de Andrade took part in an important period of the history of modern art in Brazil, especially at the city of São Paulo, from the 1910s to the 1940s, which are the chronological landmarks assumed here taking the article \"Em prol de uma pintura nacional\" [In favor of a national painting], published in 1915, and the novel Marco Zero II: Chão [Ground Zero II: Ground], published in 1945, as reference points. Remarkable both as style and discursive strategies, Oswald de Andrade\'s writings on art reveal a reflection in constant movement, but always attentive to what the author understood as the demands of a time of transformations and struggle for a less oppressive society, in which the arts had a strategic position. Based on the investigation of the abovementioned materials, this work argues that the visual arts did not occupy a secondary position in relation to Oswald de Andrade\'s activities as writer, poet and controversialist journalist. On the contrary, they were a constitutive element of his intellectual and creative experience.

Full textBased on an analysis of the representation of processions by Brazilian artists in 20th century paintings, the research analyzes the development of processions organized by artists as performance in the public spaces of cities in Brazil and abroad. In presenting several examples, the author describes the processions organized by artists as a performance of resistance in Brazil in the public domain before, during and after the military dictatorship. In tracing this history through examples chronologically since 1931 and a series of 25 interviews with Brazilian and international artists (transcribed in the first appendix), the thesis seeks to demonstrate the wide variety of themes and contexts that motivate artists to organize processions and the forms these can take. Chapter 3 analyzes the possibilities of public participation in the processions drawing comparisons between Brazilian and international realities with the recent theory of relational aesthetics. Chapter 4 introduces the variety of documentation and sculptural elements that emerge from ephemeral events and their presentation in exhibitions. Chapter 5 raises questions about time and agency in participatory art projects, making it clear that the processions and parades organized by these cultural agents attempt to maintain their critical potential, while they have also become a means of institutional support. The second appendix lists works for a possible exhibition

The analysis of the exhibition act and the iconographic research in one of the permanent collections of the institution, will be used as a starting point to think about the presence of the sacred in this environment, having as a central aspect of the study the way in which the exhibition display is constructed and manifests itself as an outcome, mainly, of the current director and visual artist Emanoel Araujo. To think the artists, objects and symbols present in the Afro-Brazilian Religiosities sector from their exhibition display will help us to point out relevant questions about the aesthetic and religious phenomena present in one of the categories of Afro-Brazilian Art, as well as on the interpretations that are being made with the encounters in the museum space by the attending audience, a field of latent and possible approaches.

Full textThis thesis is an ethnography of the ideias, practices, histories, memories, native theories, conflicts, inequalities, imaginations and experiences of Brazilian artists, critics, curators, art dealers and art collectors throughout the 1980s and 90s. The temporal and spacial breadth covered oscillates; we have, however, decided to focus the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and the intersection between the contemporary art circuit and its market through fieldwork done in galleries, museums, bienals, libraries, public and private archives, courses on art history, and testimonials. Between the many objects described, an emphasis is made on the international return to painting; the invention of the 80s generation and its relations to the market; the exhibitions Primitivism in the Twentieth Century (MoMA, New York, 1984) and Magiciens de la Terre (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 1989); the rediscovery of body, self and narrative during the 1990s; abject art and its main international exhibitions; the Anthropophagic Bienal of São Paulo (1998); the internationalization of Brazilian art in Europe, United States and Latin America; the trajectories and quarrels between different generations of art dealers in Brazil; the introduction of the entreprenurial and financial classes into cultural policies; and, above all, the status of Brazilian and Latin American art in a globalized context. From the Fluminense school of painting, through Brazilian Modernism, Neoconcretism, Tropicália, to the period emphasized in this work, the Brazilian artistic system and its characters have put a genuinely Brazilian art into question. Anthropophagy has been newly engaged as an alternative to euro-american power hierarchies and impositions, especially in the Anthropophagic Bienal of 1998. Nevertheless, when everyone is a cannibal, who cannibalizes whom? Oswald de Andrade or Montaigne? My hypothesis is the deformation of that matter, overcoming the problem of representation towards that of the presence, drawing on the deleuzian philosophy of the baroque experiments. Overcoming anthropophagy in benefit of the baroque is a way of inventing a different concept of creation, one that conceives the invention of difference through an exteriority in continued discontinuity, becomings, foldings that unfold, anthropophagy and regurgitophagy, inside and outside, figure and ground, interpretation and counter interpretation, framed art, and improvisation.

Abstract: This master's dissertation aims, at first, at the artwork of the Brazilian sculptor Nhô Caboclo, who used to work with woodcarving until he passed away in 1976. Nevertheless, its broader aim is to contribute to the Brazilian art history and the diversity of narratives that constitutes it contemporaneously, having in mind, mainly, the concept of Hybrid Cultures by Nestor García Canclini (2015). From this theoretical framework, this study intends to flexibilize strict artistic categories that can harm one's comprehension of the contemporary artwork, such as näif, brüt, primitive, folk and even popular, reviewing previous studies about its insertion in the institutional circuit. Furthermore, dialogues with other Pernambuco sculputors that produced during the 20th century will be set in order to map the diversity of the production and the relationships that were built at the Brazilian Popular Art World, expression that can be both related to the concept of Howard Becker (1982) or Angela Mascelani (2009). Lastly, from this bibliografical review, Nhô Caboclo's artwork will be studied, divided here in three big work fronts - the "equilibristas", the "torés" and the "barcos" and "rachos" - based on a critical reading and on an interview with his disciple José Alves. This research aims, finally, to debate the canon established along the art history and, in that sense, value the diversity of our artistic manifestations

Abstract:In the last years the interest for the work of Angelo Agostini is growing, overcoat as regards his political acting and abolition ideas in the press. However the connected aspects his work as painter and critic of art are mentioned only shortly, even being this in dialog with his political understanding. This inquiry noted that the questions connected with the art had a relevant space in the journalistic work of Agostini, of the same way that his activity like painter, though little mentioned, it would be present in his professional life, besides having preceded his beginning in the illustrated Brazilian press. There is observed a speech of increase in value of the art and of the artist, thought pieces of great importance in the construction of the nation as well as of the approximation of Brazil to the ideals European of civilization. This study tries to show the artist Angelo Agostini up, since we believe that his artistic formation supplies the base for the illustrations of the magazines with which it collaborated, which can be observed, for example, in the handling of the pictorial language. The graphic work appears in dialog, at several moments, with his plastic creations, both revealers of contemporary discussions to the artist. There shows up in this study the analysis of the artistic practice of Angelo Agostini.

Artes de Exu deals with art objects not only by its artistic and sociological aspects, but also by the aspects that connect these works to the divinity Exu. As if something is contained in the conception, execution and within the history of these works. The chosen objects are: Alexandre Voglers Tridente de NI (2006) and Mario Cravo Juniors Exu dos Ventos (1992). These works brought conflicts involving press, religion and politics. From ethnographic researches its built an analysis of the different meanings that have been crossed in the construction of senses that struggle for the symbolic space, also considering the movement between street and gallery, performed by these works. Its also present in Artes de Exu the references collected from the printed press, the image circulation, appropriations and discourses. Some works of Exu appear themselves in the upbringing of these conflicts, as the referred art objects offer the condition to think about the conciliation between different aspects such as: the cross and the trident, Christ and Exu and Christians and African related religions

Full textThe focus of this dissertation is the program of exhibitions entitled Panorama da Arte Brasileira (Panorama of Brazilian Art) created by the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (MAM SP) in 1969, after its collection was transferred to the University of São Paulo. The objective of the Panorama was to reestablish the program and, at the same time, create a new collection for the institution through acquisitions and donations of works to each edition. The importance of the Panorama to the reemergence of the museum and the renewal of its relationship with the cultural milieu justifies the focus of this study. Analyzing primarily curatorial texts, the study discusses how the premises of the program, founded on the terms panorama, Brazilian art and current, resulted in different responses from the guest curators over the years. It is based on the theory that there has been a change in paradigm, which began in the mid-1990s, and consolidated at the turn of the millennium, when the program began to be curated without an institutional relationship with MAM SP. The study shows that over this period the curatorial discourse became increasingly self-referencing and that the idea of current was no longer related to the works on exhibit and began to manifest, not only critical thought about them, but also a broader reflection on contemporary Brazilian art and its relationship with the modernist tradition. Finally, it was possible to conclude that, starting in the 2000s, questions surrounding a myth of origin of Brazilian contemporary art became recurrent in the Panorama of Brazilian Art and that the curatorial discourse began to adopt Modernism as the main parameter when considering the characteristics of what is national art.

Full textPedro Weingärtner (1853-1929) was a Brazilian painter. His figurative, realistic and academic art portrayed rather different themes: landscapes and customs of peasants and immigrants in Rio Grande do Sul as well as Greco-Roman mythology, part of 19th century European canons. The artist painted from the poor farmer to the president of the province, having in his diverse art one homogeneous pictorial aspect: the academic style inherited from the Old World and learned from the master William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) in Paris. Pedro Weingärtner lived between Brazil and Europe representing the differences between both continents. How is this complexity between local and universal articulated in his work? What is the weight of European art as cultural memory in his art, and how much of it did the artist produce himself, especially relative to the image of the German immigrant? These are the questions that this dissertation tries to answer.

Full textThis dissertation intends to comprehend the representations of masculinities executed in Brazilian academic paintings between the 19th and 20th centuries. We sought to analyze the life and work of the art critic and writer Gonzaga Duque Estrada (1863-1911), native do Rio de Janeiro, in order do understand the Brazilian artistic scenario in which these paintings were conceived and how they were presented to the public. We also intended to examine the male self-portraits throughout history so that the research could determine a common semantic source in these representations and bring into light the dynamics between the perception of oneself, the construction of the image of man with the possible experiences of the male gender. In this sense, based on collected data, the research comments the self-portraits of Brazilian painters, such as Almeida Júnior (1876-1882) and Pedro Américo (1843-1905), in an attempt to investigate how much the paintings selected for this study were part of a bigger debate that sought to define masculine identity.
