Abstract:
This article addresses the Tropicalist movement, the iconic Brazilian countercultural phenomenon from the late 1960s. The discussion focuses on its main visual manifestation: graphic design. We aim to demonstrate that the work of graphic designer Rogério Duarte is one of the structural pillars of this anti-establishment movement. Tropicália is often associated with music, while other contributions such as graphic design are less known or taken as a later visual response. We propose and present an analysis of the role of Duarte at the creation of the movement and its development during the late 1960s and early 1970s. His critical vision and knowledge of the Brazilian cultural mosaic led to the construction of one of widest countercultural movements of the 20th century, with a range of manifestations that included not only graphic design and music, but also theatre, cinema, and the visual arts. Tropicália was indeed more political than the American and British psychedelic manifestations, in which it was visually inspired. It was also more than a cultural movement or an anti-academic manifestation: it was a means to criticize and work around the Brazilian government and its oppression.

Abstract:
Do purple designer kufiyas spell the end of Palestine solidarity?Kufiyas, especially multicolored ones, started becoming fashionable U.S. urban hipster wear around 2005. They are so trendy, in fact, that W's Meggan Crum called the restyled kufiya featured in French designer Nicholas Ghesquière's fall 2007 Balenciaga fashion line, and worn by Brazilian supermodel Flavia de Oliveira, one of “Fall 2007's Top Ten Accessories.” Meanwhile, over the last couple of years, kufiyas of all colors have been spotted on such celebrities as Mary-Kate Olsen, Kirsten Dunst, Cameron Diaz, Colin Farrell, David Beckham, Justin Timberlake, and even John McCain's daughter Meghan. In spring 2007, Urban Outfitters marketed the kufiya, in several colors, as an “anti-war woven scarf” until protests prompted the cancellation of the line—but not the sale of the item. It is available in the winter 2008 catalog, described now as a “houndstooth scarf.”

Abstract:
AbstractThis article aims to analyze one of the most memorable episodes of Brazilian fashion in the 20th century: the collection-protest by stylist Zuzu Angel, modeled in 1971. The concern for this research came from the question: Did Zuzu Angel have her fashion really censored by the forces of the military period? Thus, we analyze her trajectory as a fashion designer, her consolidation and influence in the Brazilian fashion market, and the role that her son, Stuart Angel, had in opposing the regime, which would result in his death, and so, would lead the stylist to look for ways to denounce the dictatorship, and find in fashion a way to create a fabric manifesto against the regime. Keywords: Fashion, Zuzu Angel; Dictatorship; Press.

Abstract:
The wooden structures are most common on the roofs of historical buildings. The ancient building techniques that were employed such as the use of notched joints are no longer known today. This lack, affects the project and implementation of restoration of these structures, and demonstrates, therefore, the importance of its preservation as a legacy to future generations. As result, the decision to restore heritage structures is the key to safeguarding the cultural heritage. The designer should be aware of the consequences of choosing some intervention techniques on preserving the cultural value of the monument. The technique may harm or benefit such as the patrimonial as the technical issue, preserving its historical and cultural value, durability and safety. Although there are important technical manuals and books that refer to the restoration of ancient roof structures published by Brazilian governmental agencies, there are not references about the consequences of certain technique´s application on the patrimonial value. Thus, this work analysed, critically and reflectively, the technical solutions most commonly adopted by Brazilian designers on the restoration of the structural roofs in ancient wooden structures. This analysis will be based on principles and recommendations of the key documents and the charters of heritage preservation. After the evaluation of restoration techniques most commonly applied to restoration of roofs with wooden structures, general procedures are recommended in order to ensure the safeguarding of the heritage.

Israeli designer, Noma Bar, illustrated and directed Intolerância, which reveals in its discursive structures how the gaze of a Latin American country hegemonic media on the identity conflicts between West and East is aligned with Western powers. In the wake of Floch’s theoretical developments in plastic semiotics and Bergson’s postulations on the mechanism of the philosophy-centered filmmaking movement, this study aims to consider kineticism as a constitutive formant of visuality in audiovisual texts. The analyzed motion sequence is a notably exemplary object of establishing such hypothesis.

Abstract This paper describes the scene of the Real Class building collapse, a residential building with reinforced concrete structural system and located in the urban area of the city of Belem / PA, occurred in 2011. The unconformities found in the building are displayed using data extracted from reports and verification of structural and architectural designs. The data was compared with the Brazilian code for reinforced concrete structures, NBR 6118 (2007), valid at the time of the accident. The security of the building was evaluated through a computer model with linear analysis with the software used by the designer. The conditions of the structural system designed and as built was evaluated with parameters of global stability and load capacities of columns and foundations. The results showed that the structure of the building was subject to large displacements and the sections of columns were unable to resist the stresses produced by regional wind actions.

Abstract:
`BetaSweet' is a new “designer” carrot that was conceived as a research project with the objective to create a new high-quality vegetable with unique characteristics. The gene responsible for purple or maroon color in carrots is a natural one and has been around for many years. Carrot breeders have discarded carrots that occasionally segregated to this color because orange has been the preferred traditional color. In 1989, three carrots grown from Brazilian seed were observed to have a blotchy maroon color mixed with the normal orange. Within two generations of breeding effort, I had obtained a few carrot roots with near-complete maroon exterior color and orange interior. The contrast of orange and maroon was very attractive in carrots cut as coins or sticks. The maroon and orange color would serve as the perfect way to identify and promote this new variety. Several additional generations were required using extensive laboratory testing for low terpenoids (strong carrot flavors), high sugars, high carotene, and crispy texture. Thousands of carrot roots were analyzed and selected for those qualities and for the dark maroon exterior and orange interior colors. The few best for those characteristics were intercrossed, and re-selected for their adaptation when grown under Texas climatic conditions.

This research provides an overview of the architecture and the furniture produced in Brazil since the early twentieth century, giving prominence to the modern mobile Brazilian produced between the 1950s and 1970s and the bourgeois residential architecture. It also has as a basis to analyze production articulated this same furniture and modern residential architecture in São Paulo. At that time, the company formed by architects Store Branco & Preto and the new political moment that permeated the national scene encouraged the insertion and led to the consolidation of the modern ideas in São Paulo. This production meant by the contribution of the furniture store Branco & Preto, a synonym of partnership and cooperation, to act as a mediator of the interrelationship between the mobile and residential architecture itself. The overall goal is to demonstrate and characterize the necessary relationship between modern architecture and furniture produced during the stated period, which was provided by the dissemination and assimilation in Brazil's modernist ideas and practices. The furniture designed these years came from a line produced with refinement and excess ornaments and consisted of an inseparable element of the expression of that architecture. Thus, the research assumes that the relationship between the interior spaces and architectural shell found in the furniture of the main supports of expression forefront. Moreover, it is inevitable considering the fact that the furniture expresses cultural values, aesthetic, economic and social aggregates, themes that enrich and make it complex to its specific characteristics and artistic influences, as well as production techniques. The issues raised will be evidenced by reconstituting, through drawings and models Branco & Preto Store located in Rua Vieira de Carvalho, the reconstructions of the halls of residence and the residence of Roberto Aflalo Pacaembu - designs of architects Plinio Croce and Roberto Aflalo 1955 in reconstructions of the living room of the house Maria Luisa and Oscar Americano 1952 and the first floor of the residence, 1956 Jardim America - both designs of architect Oswaldo Arthur Bratke, besides the development of drawings and models of mobile unpublished authored by members of store.

"Criteria for evaluation of textbooks designed for english language teaching to brazilian air traffic controllers: a checklist proposal." Universidade de Taubaté, 2015. http://www.bdtd.unitau.br/tedesimplificado/tde_busca/arquivo.php?codArquivo=792.

Abstract:
Considering the need to improve the level of proficiency of air traffic controllers (ATCO) in the English language, in order to avoid incidents and accidents due to lack of proficiency, many language courses started offering English classes to those professionals. According to ICAO (2010), all ATCO must be approved in a specific proficiency exam, so that they can control international traffic. Nevertheless, the number of published textbooks in aviation English field is still low; therefore, choosing the most appropriate textbook becomes difficult due to the few options. The general objective of this paper is to contribute with researches in the field of textbook evaluation and Englisht learning and teaching. The specific objectives are: to set criteria in order to create a checklist to evaluate textbooks used in English language courses to air traffic controllers, based on criteria already found in the literature about textbook evaluation, adapting those criteria to what ICAO requirements and to the Proficiency Exam tasks; and to evaluate the book Aviation English using the checklist. The checklist criteria were created in the light of the Document 9835 (ICAO 2010), as well as in the light of the theories of language, Widdowson (1978), and others; the theory of English as a lingua franca of aviation, Oliveira E. (2007), Hülmbauer et al (2008), and others; the principles of language teaching and learning, Larsen-Freeman (2000), Brown (2007), and others; the tenets of English for Specific Purposes, Hutchinson and Waters (1987), Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998), and others; and the conception of materials development, Cunninsworth (1995), Tomlinson (1998; 2003), Mc Grath (2002), Dias (2007), and others. The checklist has as main categories the theoretical principles (language role and language teaching and learning), graphical features, lexical, grammatical and functional competences described in the Document 9835, support materials and English proficiency test preparation and it was subdivided into 117 items. The material evaluated by the means of the checklist fulfilled 71,8% of the checklist items in a positive way; on the other hand, 20,5% of the items were not identified in the material, and 7,7% of the items were partially identified in the textbook. Using the checklist to evaluate materials will enable professionals engaged in English teaching to air traffic controllers to choose the most appropriate textbook according to their audience, as well as to identify gaps in the book, in order to adapt the material, since there is no such thing as perfect material.

Full text
Abstract:
The designer Victor Burton has dedicated the most part of his work to the book. The interest for this object begun in childhood due the contact with rares books that are part of his familys collection, which increased the desire to become designer only to design books. When Victor started to work in the Brazilian editorial market at the end of the 1970s, at the Confraria dos Amigos do Livro house publisher. As the Victors main interest is the relationship between text and image, the iconographic books became his main goal and are in books of this nature that we can better visualize his style. Victor developed his own graphic language that has redefined the standard of the Brazilian editorial market. At a time when graphic design, especially the book cover, among many colors and attractive vie for consumer attention on the shelves of bookstores, is not so easy to identify neither the publisher nor the author of the graphic design and cover. However, the books of Victor Burton have a style that allows us to recognize your signature. Thus, the question that guided this study was why we can identify books of Victor Burton? Thus, the aim of this study was to enumerate and identify graphic aspects that characterize the style of this designer in iconographic books. For this, we based on descriptive method developed by Guilherme Cunha Lima in O Gráfico Amador. From the characteristics raised, we could identify the major elements that allow us to recognize the authorship of the work of Victor Burton. The use of these graphic aspects reflects the meticulous work of the designer Victor Burton who can create a visual narrative aiding reading the text through a new graphic reading, especially in iconographic books.

Rezende, Livia Lazzaro. "The raw and the manufactured : Brazilian modernity and national identity as projected in international exhibitions (1862-1922)." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2010. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/1143/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses nineteenth- and early twentieth-century representations of Brazil, with em-phasis on Brazilian national identity and the country’s engagement with modernity. It addresses these broad themes by focusing on the national participation in key international exhibitions, from Brazil’s first official appearance at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London to the Brazilian Centennial Exposition held in Rio de Janeiro in 1922. Using a multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological framework, this thesis examines ‘national objects’ – exhibits, exhibition displays, publications and pavilions – shown at home and abroad. It questions what sort of national identity these objects materialised and how they propelled Brazilian experience of modernity. Despite being a multicultural and diverse country, from 1862 to 1922 Brazil was frequently repre-sented by its exhibition commissioners as a homogeneous and cohesive nation. In less than a hun-dred years, Brazil turned from being a liberal but slavery-bound Empire to become an oligarchic Republic. Alongside manumission, urban expansion, and industrialisation, the nation underwent unprecedented political, economic, and cultural changes. These changes, however, were displayed differently at home and abroad. This thesis, thus, is concerned with the cleavages in the national representation from the Empire to the Republic and questions what sort of nation was being repre-sented abroad, and why. This thesis reveals that the Brazilian exhibitionary efforts during this period largely excluded representations of its population, especially of those who did not conform to the modern and civi-lised images attributed to the nation by the state. It also sustains that, despite their commercial and economic imperatives, exhibitions were used by the Brazilian state, during Empire and Republic, for the affirmation and conservation of political power. This thesis is tested in five chapters. The first discusses previous attempts at studying exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, and defines the con-cepts considered in this thesis. The second chapter addresses issues of agency and representation by examining the imperial representation sent to the Centennial International Exhibition in Phila-delphia in 1876. The third chapter focuses on two exhibitions, one Imperial and one Republican, to enquire about ruptures and continuities in the Brazilian representation abroad. This chapter centres on the displays of Brazilian raw materials mounted at the Exposition Universelle of 1867 in Paris, and at the Louisiana Purchase International Exposition in St Louis in 1904. The fourth chapter examines objects that communicated Brazilian ‘civilisation and progress’ at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. These objects were used by the newly instated republi-can government to manipulate national historical symbols that legitimised their ascension to power and promoted them as the future. The final chapter investigates the Rio exhibition in 1922 as a place where modernisation and modernity were made visible for a Brazilian audience.

In search of understanding the role that design education in Brazil represents, towards to the new approach in the market of consumption goods, where the source of creative inspiration has became more important than the place of manufacture. The importance of what symbolic a product can represent in itself can connect or establish the source's status. It is in this scenario where will be the lookout in the origin and growth of the design education in Brazil, presenting a professional activity which had grown next to the industry and evolves along with the use of foreign methods and other technical areas, facing the need to form a Brazilian context as a creative factor for the development of projects of the product from the academic perspective, proposing a method based on structure development using the context of the Brazilian language and creative inspiration in projects designed products.

Abstract:
About the theme: Public design policies can be explained as sets of principles established by a government intending to apply design into leveraging social, economical, industrial, and regional development. Design policy is an emerging theme in the field of design, and one that has been raising concerns from governments globally. Two aspects drive this interest: the extraordinary growth rates of the creative industries in the past decades; and the ability of Design to be a link between technology, creativity and the user, being a potential unique tool to help innovate and foster economic growth. About the research: The research was proposed responding an observed demand of governments in emerging countries to structure policies to use design to promote industrial and social development. It was structured to analyse current national and regional Design Policies within the framework of common aspects, effective practices and trends; external factors influencing their implementation; general causes of failures; assessment methods; and the influence of coexisting design definitions and trends. The focus is on Brazil, whose government is funding the research, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. In this context the research aims to generate a rationale for planning and assessment of Design Policies based on a review of current effective practices and identified future trends relevant to emerging markets. The main objective of the research is the identification and analysis of the constituent elements, driving forces, impacting factors, expected consequences, assessment methodologies and common failures of design policies. The intended goal is to respond to a demand for new knowledge, data, and tools that could contribute to reduce the current level of uncertainty regarding design policies. Methodology: To acknowledge the established objectives and goal, a comprehensive review of literature was initially carried out, including many reports and other documents from governments and from the EU. Emerging issues from the review informed a two-stage study developed in Brazil. For the first stage, in 2011, thirteen stakeholders were interviewed, from key active governmental programmes and departments. The choice of programmes and departments was validated by questions from the interview itself. The second stage, in 2012, focused on the only currently active design support programme aimed at SMEs in Brazil. During this phase, it was collected archival data and three interviews conducted. Collected data was analysed using descriptive statistic tools. The findings were then filtered using documents and archival data about European effective practices to inform the discussion and recommendations, and further used to generate a modelling framework for design policies. Contribution: The research contribution can be acknowledged in four different levels of outcomes: a comprehensive review of literature (1), combining an assortment of very significant documents and discussing their connections and specific contributions to the field; the application of an interview and archive based case study (2) about design policies in Brazil, corroborating Case Studies as a leading research tool for the area; a discussion on the impacting factors and effective practices of design policies (3); and finally the combined tools Compass Model and Create DP (4) that set together a framework intended to reduce levels of uncertainty in planning design policies.

Abstract:
Drilling operations in deepwater (DW) or ultra-deepwater areas, even more in exploratory frontiers, have been increasingly challenging due to the operational complexities and limited available data about the subsurface conditions. In this sense, enhancing safety and minimizing the likelihood of losing well integrity and damage to the environment is a currently essential objective relating to offshore drilling activities. Hence, deepwater well designs should advance to safely meet the challenges related to the progression of well and water depths. The safe construction of these wells requires the application of suitable well design considerations that include well integrity approaches to reduce the risk of an unintended release of formation fluids (oil, gas or water) to the environment during the deepwater drilling operations, in other words a \"Blowout\" occurrence. In this study it is proposed two deepwater well architectural designs, limited to drilling stage, that safely accomplish the well targets and facing several deepwater well complexities, e.g. narrow operating envelopes. Thus, well logging and geological data of two actual pioneer wells drilled in deep and ultradeep water zones in Ceará Basin are used as a basis to construct and assess the drilling operating envelopes, to define the casing shoe depths and well barrier envelope. Furthermore, it is introduced the application of at least two independent Barrier Integrated Sets (BISs) to ensure the well integrity during the 4th phase drilling of the proposed well architectures, as it has recently been required in Brazil by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) through \"Well Integrity Management System\" (SGIP for its acronym in Portuguese).

Abstract:
Most of the papers collected in this book resulted from presentations and discussions undertaken during the V Lablita Workshop that took place at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on August 23-25, 2011. The workshop was held in conjunction with the II Brazilian Seminar on Pragmatics and Prosody. The guiding themes for the joint event were illocution, modality, attitude, information patterning and speech annotation. Thus, all papers presented here are concerned with theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of speech. Among the papers in this volume, there are different theoretical orientations, which are mirrored through the methodological designs of studies pursued. However, all papers are based on the analysis of actual speech, be it from corpora or from experimental contexts trying to emulate natural speech. Prosody is the keyword that comes out from all the papers in this publication, which indicates the high standing of this category in relation to studies that are geared towards the understanding of major elements that are constitutive of the structuring of speech.

Abstract:
During the eighteenth century Portugal developed a large military construction process in the Ultramarine possessions, in order to compete with the new born colonial trading empires, mainly Great Britain, Netherlands and France. The Portuguese colonial seashores of the Atlantic Ocean (since the middle of the sixteenth century) and of the Indian Ocean (from the end of the first quarter of the seventeenth century) were repeatedly coveted, and the huge Portuguese colony of Brazil was also harassed in the south during the eighteenth century –here due to problems in a diplomatic and military dispute with Spain, related with the global frontiers’ design of the Iberian colonies. The Treaty of Madrid (1750) had specifically abrogated the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) between Portugal and Spain, and the limits of Brazil began to be defined on the field. Macapá is situated in the western branch of Amazonas delta, in the singular cross-point of the Equator with Tordesillas Meridian, and the construction of a big fortress began in the year of 1764 under direction of Enrico Antonio Galluzzi, an Italian engineer contracted by Portuguese administration to the Commission of Delimitation, which arrived in Brazil in 1753. In consequence of the political panorama in Europe after the Seven Years War (1756-1763), a new agreement between Portugal and Spain was negotiated (after the regional conflict in South America), achieved to the Treaty of San Idefonso (1777), which warranted the integration of the Amazonas basin. It was strategic the decision to build, one year before, the huge fortress of Príncipe da Beira, arduously realized in the most interior of the sub-continent, 2000 km from the sea throughout the only possible connection by rivers navigation. Domingos Sambucetti, another Italian engineer, was the designer and conductor of the jobs held on the right bank of Guaporé River, future frontier’s line with Bolivia. São José de Macapá and Príncipe da Beira are two big fortresses Vauban’ style, built under very similar projects by two Italian engineers (each one dead with malaria in the course of building), with the observance of the most exigent rules of the treaties of military architecture.

Abstract:
This work presents a computer program developed for the definition of Deck Accommodation Arrangements of ships and craft that allocates spaces in an automated process, in order to help the designer with options and initial ideas for its definition or to optimize arrangements propositions. This optimization process is usually done based on experience, using maritime regulations and practices. It is an evolution of previous works [14] which adopted the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP), that allowed the user to select units to be assigned to demarcated spaces and the program provides optimized options of arrangements, which can be transformed, in turn, into drawings. In this work, a hybrid meta-heuristic has been incorporated to the program, namely the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedures — GRASP [7], and for the local search of solutions, the Variable Neighborhood Search — VNS [8], to improve the results. The program incorporates the mathematical model, containing menus of types of accommodation/compartments or deck units, for the user’s selection. Visualization and manipulation screens for friendly use were created, that allow the designer to quickly assemble deck arrangements in spaces, with an indirect tri-dimensionality feature. The program processes position and flow matrices, being the later ones determined through calibration (being modifiable) as a function of applicable Regulations of ILO 147 Convention, SOLAS and NORMAM (Brazilian Administration), incorporating as well maritime practice and usual ergonomic criteria for requirements of safety and habitability. The results can be used for General Arrangement drawings and can aid in the calculations of light weight and center of gravity, sail area, etc. A small discussion of recommendations for accommodation arrangements of the related regulations, rules of thumb derived from design practice and ergonomic criteria is provided.
