Abstract:
This article addresses the Tropicalist movement, the iconic Brazilian countercultural phenomenon from the late 1960s. The discussion focuses on its main visual manifestation: graphic design. We aim to demonstrate that the work of graphic designer Rogério Duarte is one of the structural pillars of this anti-establishment movement. Tropicália is often associated with music, while other contributions such as graphic design are less known or taken as a later visual response. We propose and present an analysis of the role of Duarte at the creation of the movement and its development during the late 1960s and early 1970s. His critical vision and knowledge of the Brazilian cultural mosaic led to the construction of one of widest countercultural movements of the 20th century, with a range of manifestations that included not only graphic design and music, but also theatre, cinema, and the visual arts. Tropicália was indeed more political than the American and British psychedelic manifestations, in which it was visually inspired. It was also more than a cultural movement or an anti-academic manifestation: it was a means to criticize and work around the Brazilian government and its oppression.

Abstract:
Do purple designer kufiyas spell the end of Palestine solidarity?Kufiyas, especially multicolored ones, started becoming fashionable U.S. urban hipster wear around 2005. They are so trendy, in fact, that W's Meggan Crum called the restyled kufiya featured in French designer Nicholas Ghesquière's fall 2007 Balenciaga fashion line, and worn by Brazilian supermodel Flavia de Oliveira, one of “Fall 2007's Top Ten Accessories.” Meanwhile, over the last couple of years, kufiyas of all colors have been spotted on such celebrities as Mary-Kate Olsen, Kirsten Dunst, Cameron Diaz, Colin Farrell, David Beckham, Justin Timberlake, and even John McCain's daughter Meghan. In spring 2007, Urban Outfitters marketed the kufiya, in several colors, as an “anti-war woven scarf” until protests prompted the cancellation of the line—but not the sale of the item. It is available in the winter 2008 catalog, described now as a “houndstooth scarf.”

Abstract:
AbstractThis article aims to analyze one of the most memorable episodes of Brazilian fashion in the 20th century: the collection-protest by stylist Zuzu Angel, modeled in 1971. The concern for this research came from the question: Did Zuzu Angel have her fashion really censored by the forces of the military period? Thus, we analyze her trajectory as a fashion designer, her consolidation and influence in the Brazilian fashion market, and the role that her son, Stuart Angel, had in opposing the regime, which would result in his death, and so, would lead the stylist to look for ways to denounce the dictatorship, and find in fashion a way to create a fabric manifesto against the regime. Keywords: Fashion, Zuzu Angel; Dictatorship; Press.

Abstract:
The wooden structures are most common on the roofs of historical buildings. The ancient building techniques that were employed such as the use of notched joints are no longer known today. This lack, affects the project and implementation of restoration of these structures, and demonstrates, therefore, the importance of its preservation as a legacy to future generations. As result, the decision to restore heritage structures is the key to safeguarding the cultural heritage. The designer should be aware of the consequences of choosing some intervention techniques on preserving the cultural value of the monument. The technique may harm or benefit such as the patrimonial as the technical issue, preserving its historical and cultural value, durability and safety. Although there are important technical manuals and books that refer to the restoration of ancient roof structures published by Brazilian governmental agencies, there are not references about the consequences of certain technique´s application on the patrimonial value. Thus, this work analysed, critically and reflectively, the technical solutions most commonly adopted by Brazilian designers on the restoration of the structural roofs in ancient wooden structures. This analysis will be based on principles and recommendations of the key documents and the charters of heritage preservation. After the evaluation of restoration techniques most commonly applied to restoration of roofs with wooden structures, general procedures are recommended in order to ensure the safeguarding of the heritage.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper describes the scene of the Real Class building collapse, a residential building with reinforced concrete structural system and located in the urban area of the city of Belem / PA, occurred in 2011. The unconformities found in the building are displayed using data extracted from reports and verification of structural and architectural designs. The data was compared with the Brazilian code for reinforced concrete structures, NBR 6118 (2007), valid at the time of the accident. The security of the building was evaluated through a computer model with linear analysis with the software used by the designer. The conditions of the structural system designed and as built was evaluated with parameters of global stability and load capacities of columns and foundations. The results showed that the structure of the building was subject to large displacements and the sections of columns were unable to resist the stresses produced by regional wind actions.

Abstract:
`BetaSweet' is a new “designer” carrot that was conceived as a research project with the objective to create a new high-quality vegetable with unique characteristics. The gene responsible for purple or maroon color in carrots is a natural one and has been around for many years. Carrot breeders have discarded carrots that occasionally segregated to this color because orange has been the preferred traditional color. In 1989, three carrots grown from Brazilian seed were observed to have a blotchy maroon color mixed with the normal orange. Within two generations of breeding effort, I had obtained a few carrot roots with near-complete maroon exterior color and orange interior. The contrast of orange and maroon was very attractive in carrots cut as coins or sticks. The maroon and orange color would serve as the perfect way to identify and promote this new variety. Several additional generations were required using extensive laboratory testing for low terpenoids (strong carrot flavors), high sugars, high carotene, and crispy texture. Thousands of carrot roots were analyzed and selected for those qualities and for the dark maroon exterior and orange interior colors. The few best for those characteristics were intercrossed, and re-selected for their adaptation when grown under Texas climatic conditions.

Abstract:
In the current world economical conjecture, the accentuated growth in Brazilian production and exportation in the Agro-Food industry sets the country as a central role in the field. Implementing storage units in Agricole properties and industrial sites constitutes a necessary premise to keep the country as a competitive member in the global scenery. The vertical silos present themselves as alternative solutions. However, a great sum of the existent silos does not match the ideal conditions of operation due to the insufficient knowledge of the pressure variations that happen in time and inner space, of the flow, and the variables that affect the behavior of the stored products. Such situations have contributed to accidents and breakdowns in silos. With this increasing demand for the storage capacity in silos, the full understanding of the structural functioning, failure prevention, and optimization of the structural components became of great importance. Thus, this work aimed to present some events that happened in the country in the last years and bring the main causes of structural failures, highlighting the failures that are directly related to the type of flow in the interior of the silo; wacky charging and/or discharging; change in the properties of the stored products (specified weight, actual inner friction angle, friction angle against the wall) and instability in the support columns. It follows that a great number of accidents in these structures could have been avoided or reduced with previous knowledge, from the silo designer and those responsible for the operation, about the most important occurrences in silos.

Abstract:
This article aims to identify what an innovative brand is from the perspective of business managers in a region of Brazil, and describe how they manage innovative brands. A multiple case study was carried out with five innovative companies from four economic sectors: telecommunications, information technology, chemicals, and electricity. The interviews with these managers were processed with content analysis, being established sixteen categories which include: definition of innovation; innovative brand features; reasons for innovation; relationship between brands and innovation; area responsible for innovation; dissemination of innovation; organizational culture of new ideas; types of innovation; reduction of time, costs and risks to innovation; relationship between the company and the market; brand strategies; brand personality; integration of the end consumer into innovation; rewards for the consumer; and brand heritage. At the end, theoretical and managerial contributions are presented that can be applied or adapted to other organizations in their process of innovation and brand management. In this sense, it is important to highlight that, in the studied cases, incremental innovation is dominant; the stage at which successful innovations improve consumer brand awareness, attitude, and usage prevails; and the companies studied could be distributed in two of the innovation possibilities proposed by Brexendorf et al. (2015): follower brands and craft-designer led brands.

Abstract:
Through the development of photovoltaic technologies, the market related to this type of renewable energy grows constantly. In Brazil, the generated power through photovoltaic (PV) power stations approximates to 2.3 GW representing 1.3% of the total Brazilian energy mix. To supply the public it is necessary to offer tools that facilitate consumer decision making or even the work of a solar farm designer. By analyzing the user’s necessity, it is possible to determine that a great parcel needs a quick and simple response to help them with their questions, and programs that are already well established in the marketplace are complex for inexperienced users. For this reason, a software that calculates the best inclination for PV modules using the method proposed by Liu and Jordan in 1962 is developed. It also determines the number of modules that can be installed without any shading between arrays within a user-defined area. This calculation is possible through the standard dimensions provided by the module manufacturers and the solar height and declination study. Through a simple interface, the user quickly receives the optimum tilt angle of installation, the number of PV modules and the maximum generated power.

Abstract:
Map 01 (Vale Tudo) integrates Erika Schwarz’s currently research about costume as performance and appropriation of objects, in relation to the main supplier of scenographic materials from Rio de Janeiro: the S.A.A.R.A. – Society of Friends Adjacent to Alfandega Street commercial shopping district. Articulating personal experiences, cultural traditions and questions about Brazilian artistic productions in contemporaneity, this four hours performance uses the performativity and the theatricality of the real to problematize not only the relationship between production and creation within a project of costume or scenery, but its own use of materials, ready-made pieces and everyday objects as a metalinguistic issue. The performatic action begins with the performer/designer arriving at S.A.A.R.A. equipped with a large map of the region. In this map, a route has been traced out, the fruit of prior research, which it is permeated by, leading the performer to find different shapes and colours. Along this path, multiple purchases are made, initiating the accumulation process of materials and the composition of costumes in situ. It culminates in the creation of a theatrical figure/body and also in the radical (and surrealistic) transformation of objects – at first banal – in the eyes of another (attentive observer or mere passer-by).

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this article is to explore the role of gardens in the architecture of hospitals of the so-called “carioca school” of architecture, between the years of 1930 and 1960. In other words, to analyze gardens in the works of carioca architects who surrounded the architect Lucio Costa, or whose projects were influenced by the conceptions of this first generation of modern architects, who first graduated architecture school at the National College of Fine Arts and then, after 1945, at the National College of Architecture, in Rio de Janeiro. The importance of gardens in the architecture of hospitals was mentioned in Edward Stevens’s book “The American hospital of the twentieth century”, in 1918, a publication which can be found at the UFRJ Architecture School library, as well as in the Brazilian doctors’ book collections at the time. Stevens dedicates a chapter of this book to the landscape theme, where he states that the hospital designer and the landscape architect should work together. On the other hand, Pasteur’s discoveries and their implications in the management of hospital space did not occur without the mediation of landscaping. They resulted in changes when it came to choose the site for the hospital building within a city, as well as in its formal typology - from the Tollet model of pavilions, to the existence of green areas surrounding high buildings, and overlapping nurseries. It is also relevant to bear in mind that public nationalist buildings played an important role after the revolution of 1930 in Brazil as they represented the state, and this resulted in significant projects. We are therefore going to present four hospital buildings which were analyzed in our research on the integration of the Arts in the architecture of hospitals. Although the Lagoa Hospital, by Oscar Niemeyer, the Sanatorium Complex of Curicica, by Sérgio Bernardes, the IPPMG, by Jorge Machado Moreira, and the Souza Aguiar Hospital, by Ary Garcia Roza, all have different programs, formal typologies and links with their surrounding area, they are good examples for debating the presence of gardens in the Modern architecture of hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Three of these examples have fortunately included projects by landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx - the Lagoa Hospital, the IPPMG and the Souza Aguiar Hospital. The two former hospitals have had their buildings be surrounded by large gardens, in order to mitigate the harmful health effects related to the inclusion of hospitals within urban areas. The latter has been built in the 1960s with a complex program, in a dense historical area downtown, but adjacent to an urban park. It includes a vertical garden, which delimits, along with a panel in the hall (also by the same designer), a hallway for the user, between the urban and the healing space.

Abstract:
Background: Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life and timely introduction of appropriate solid foods are important determinants of weight status in infancy and later life stages. Disparities in obesity rates among young children suggest that maternal feeding practices during the first 2 years of life may contribute to these disparities. Brazilians are a growing immigrant group in the United States, yet little research has focused on parental beliefs and behaviors affecting the health of Brazilian immigrant children in the United States. Research aim: This study aimed to explore beliefs and infant-feeding practices of Brazilian immigrant mothers in the United States. Methods: Focus group discussions were conducted with Brazilian immigrant mothers. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis and themes categorized using the socioecological model. Results: Twenty-nine immigrant Brazilian mothers participated in the study. Analyses revealed that all participants breastfed their infants. The majority initiated breastfeeding soon after childbirth. However, most mothers did not exclusively breastfeed. They used formula and human milk concomitantly. Family and culture influenced mothers’ infant-feeding beliefs and practices in early introduction of solid foods. Conclusion: As the number of children in the United States growing up in families of immigrant parents increases, understanding influences on Brazilian immigrant mothers’ infant-feeding practices will be important to the development of effective interventions to promote healthy infant feeding and weight status among Brazilian children. Interventions designed for Brazilian immigrant families should incorporate an understanding of social context, family, and cultural factors to develop health promotion messages tailored to the needs of this ethnic group.

This paper presents an investigation on the safety of structural elements submitted to pure bending, produced in reinforced concrete, in steel and steel-concrete composites, and designed according to Brazilian codes NBR8681:2003, NBR6118:2007 and NBR8800:2008. The study allows a comparison of the relative safety of beams produced with these materials and designed using these codes. Comparative studies between the performances of different materials are difficult to find in the published literature. The present study shows that reliability indexes for reinforced concrete beams are satisfactory; however, results for steel beams are below limit values established in international design standards. Reliability indexes found herein for steel-concrete composite beams are intermediate to concrete and steel beams.

Abstract:
Over the years, researchers have been conducting studies to investigate the water consumption profile in buildings; these studies have contributed to the accumulation of knowledge regarding the correct sizing of hydraulic systems in buildings. In the context of the methods for the characterization of system demand or loading values, the procedures commonly employed to obtain the project flow rate were primarily proposed in the mid-20th century. These models require revision and adaptation to the current water consumption values. In recent years, certain researchers have proposed simulation models with an application focus on water distribution systems owing to the random and temporal behavior of water demand in this system type. In this study, a water-demand stochastic simulation model in residential buildings is proposed, which encompasses the behavioral modelling of users and their interaction with the system to improve the design process of water distribution systems. Therefore, geographical and population factors (quantity, distribution, and organization) were considered for the behavioral modelling of users; regarding the system modelling, aspects related to the hydraulic system were considered, such as the relation between system components, the type of sanitary appliance, and the number of available devices. Different simulations—with several different types of showers—were conducted using the proposed model. Comparing the flows obtained from the simulation and from the Brazilian standard, for all system components, the decrease in the project flow rate varied from 4% to 61%. In terms of material consumption regarding the pipe (PVC), the decrease varied from 25% to 63%. Practical application: When assessing potential designs for components in water distribution systems in buildings robust information is required for water demand across different time scales. The use of simulation models represents an important advance for the dimensioning process of these components, since it is possible to know a wider range of information about the system demand possibilities. The use of this type of model, as discussed in this article, will equip the designer with an enhanced decision making capacity.

Abstract:
The importation of foreign models is part of Brazil’s institution building story, owing to its Portuguese colonisation and the influence of European countries and the United States. After the transition to democracy and the Constitution of 1988, the scenario began to change. The country developed social policy innovations that rose to a national scale when the Workers’ Party took office. These innovations started to spread globally, and international organisations began to recommend Brazilian social policies. Examples of Brazilian policies that have been transferred are the Family Allowance and the National School Feeding Programs. How has Brazil moved from importing foreign institutions to becoming a Southern country reference in terms of social policies? The main argument here is that Brazil, while building itself into a rising power, has developed new patterns of policy transfers that have so far been overlooked by the field literature. Through a process-tracing analysis of Brazil’s social policy diffusion, we have been able to identify different forces that facilitate these transfers, such as a quest for international legitimacy, the role of “policy ambassadors,” the joint efforts of various national institutions, Brazilians occupying positions in international organisations, and the creation of institutions designed for these policy transfers.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) was developed in 2000 and validated in 2002, aiming at assessing the impact and the benefits of orthosurgical treatment on patients' quality of life. OBJECTIVE: Cross-culturally translate into Brazilian Portuguese and back-translate into English a quality of life instrument, assuring maintenance of its properties. METHODS: At first, equivalence of concepts and items was discussed by a group of specialists who scrutinized all questionnaire items. Additionally, four patients in need of orthosurgical treatment were interviewed by means of the focus group methodology. Relevance of the questionnaire items was assured prior to its translation which was carried out by two translators who worked independently. Both translations were tested in 20 patients and then consolidated. The consolidated questionnaire version was back-translated into English by two translators who worked independently, and the consolidated back-translation was assessed by the authors of the original questionnaire as well as by the researchers. RESULTS: The OQLQ was translated into Brazilian Portuguese. This translation was tested in a pilot study comprising 12 patients, aged between 16 and 34 years old. CONCLUSION: The OQLQ Brazilian Portuguese translation proves to be an appropriate instrument to access the impact of dentofacial deformities on the quality of life of patients in the Brazilian public health system and who are in need of orthosurgical treatment.

Abstract:
Abstract Nowadays it is known that it is important to study the safety of structures to avoid tragic accidents or economic losses. The most widely used method in the world to evaluate the safety of structures is structural reliability. The reliability index of prestressed precast beams of bridges designed using Brazilian standards (NBR6118 and NBR7188) is not known. This work evaluates the annual reliability indexes of a prestressed precast beam bridge at the serviceability limit state (SLS) projected using the Brazilian standard and compares it with results from the literature. The studied bridge has 33.5 meters of span, is simply supported, constituted by five precast concrete beams with U section. The reliability analysis was carried out using two methods for the four limit state equations: First Order Mean Value (FOMV) and First Order Reliability Method (FORM). Sensitivity analyzes were performed to consider both the relative contribution of these variables and the effect of their distributions on the annual reliability indexes for SLS. It was verified that the effect of load trains and the allowable stress significantly reduce the reliability index obtained for Brazilian standard. The service limit state equations are particularly sensitive to load trains, allowable stress and prestress losses, as well as their respective distributions.

ABSTRACT This is a case for teaching focused on the internationalization process of Brazilian Secrets Hair (BSH), a company that has considered the world as its target market since its start, and is part of an ever-growing segment: the cosmetics industry. Upon understanding the company’s international expansion, the internationalization theories within the behavioral approach, such as the Uppsala theory, the network theory, the entrepreneurship perspective, and the effectuation logic, can be explored, answering questions related to market selection processes, entry mode choices, and global expansion strategy decisions. This case was based on primary and secondary data from a real company and was originally designed for international business classes of graduate courses.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The present study aims to investigate how the intelligibility of non-target word-final codas is affected by the type of coda modification, the degree of semantic information, and the listeners’ first language (L1). Furthermore, a correlational approach is adopted to examine possible relations between intelligibility and the listeners’ second language (L2) proficiency level, familiarity with speakers’ L1, and length of residence in the speakers’ country. For this purpose, an Intelligibility Test was designed containing utterances with word-final codas that were produced with phonetic characteristics typically found in the English spoken by Brazilians (e.g., palatalization and vowel insertion). This test and a background questionnaire were completed by 38 listeners from different nationalities. The results indicate that certain types of coda modification hinder intelligibility, and that semantic information improves intelligibility in some cases. Furthermore, listeners whose L1 is not typologically similar to Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and who reported being highly familiar with the English spoken by Brazilians tend to perform better on the Intelligibility Test. Overall, this study highlights the importance of bringing to the classroom different varieties of the target language, as a way to boost L2 users’ familiarity with different accents. Contact with different accents should benefit listeners, who are more likely to understand pronunciation patterns that are frequent in the language spoken by a particular group of L2 users. Moreover, accent familiarity is also expected to benefit speakers by bringing awareness about the pronunciation patterns that hinder intelligibility more often and that could be modified to improve communication.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Pancreatoduodenectomy is a technically challenging surgical procedure with an incidence of postoperative complications ranging from 30% to 61%. The procedure requires a high level of experience, and to minimize surgery-related complications and mortality, a high-quality standard surgery is imperative. Aim: To understand the Brazilian practice patterns for pancreatoduodenectomy. Method: A questionnaire was designed to obtain an overview of the surgical practice in pancreatic cancer, specific training, and experience in pancreatoduodenectomy. The survey was sent to members who declared an interest in pancreatic surgery. Results: A total of 60 questionnaires were sent, and 52 have returned (86.7%). The Southeast had the most survey respondents, with 25 surgeons (48.0%). Only two surgeons (3.9%) performed more than 50% of their pancreatoduodenectomies by laparoscopy. A classic Whipple procedure was performed by 24 surgeons (46.2%) and a standard International Study Group on Pancreatic Surgery lymphadenectomy by 43 surgeons (82.7%). For reconstruction, pancreaticojejunostomy was performed by 49 surgeons (94.2%), single limb technique by 41(78.9%), duct-to-mucosa anastomosis by 38 (73.1%), internal trans-anastomotic stenting by 26 (50.0%), antecolic route of gastric reconstruction by 39 (75.0%), and Braun enteroenterostomy was performed by only six surgeons (11.5%). Prophylactic abdominal drainage was performed by all surgeons, and somatostatin analogues were utilized by six surgeons (11.5%). Early postoperative enteral nutrition was routine for 22 surgeons (42.3%), and 34 surgeons (65.4%) reported routine use of a nasogastric suction tube. Conclusion: Heterogeneity was observed in the pancreatoduodenectomy practice patterns of surgeons in Brazil, some of them in contrast with established evidence in the literature.

Abstract:
This paper describes a prototype for Brazilian bankcheck recognition. The description is divided into three topics: bankcheck information extraction, digit amount recognition and signature verification. In bankcheck information extraction, our algorithms provide signature and digit amount images free of background patterns and bankcheck printed information. In digit amount recognition, we dealt with the digit amount segmentation and implementation of a complete numeral character recognition system involving image processing, feature extraction and neural classification. In signature verification, we designed and implemented a static signature verification system suitable for banking and commercial applications. Our signature verification algorithm is capable of detecting both simple, random and skilled forgeries. The proposed automatic bankcheck recognition prototype was intensively tested by real bankcheck data as well as simulated data providing the following performance results: for skilled forgeries, 4.7% equal error rate; for random forgeries, zero Type I error and 7.3% Type II error; for bankcheck numerals, 92.7% correct recognition rate.

Abstract:
In 1938 Roberto Burle Marx designed the gardens for the new Ministry of Education building in Rio de Janeiro, a building that had been designed by a team of Brazilian architects, with Le Corbusier acting as consultant. In the 1920s and 1930s, Brazilian radicals, anxious not to perpetuate the dependency of the past, often adopted an irreverent attitude toward European culture, and although Le Corbusier's visits to Brazil in 1929 and 1936 were undoubtedly influential, his ideas were not received uncritically. This paper suggests that Le Corbusier's negative attitude to aspects of the natural landscape of South America could have provided Burle Marx with an incentive for incorporating the forms of that landscape into his gardens for Brazil's first modernist skyscraper.

Abstract:
Popular music plays important roles in two related films portraying Brazilian slum life. Based on a 1953 play by Vinícius de Morais, Marcel Camus's 1959 film Orfeu Negro, and a 1999 feature by Brazilian director Carlos Diegues titled Orfeu, augment traditional samba styles with bossa nova and rap, respectively. Interpreting musical style as allegorical texts within fictive landscapes, this paper examines conflation and conflict among musical meanings, Brazilian social histories, and discursive identities marking the twentieth century. Broad aspects of Brazilian political and socio-cultural development are implicated, such as authoritarianism, the politics and sociology of race, technological advances, mass media, and modes of modernisation. Here, bossa nova and rap engage society through reflexive and generative interpretations within a narrative designed to illustrate connections between processes of innovative, trans-national cultural production, myths of national identity, social change, and the powerful role of popular music in film.

Abstract:
Background: The urticaria control test (UCT) is a patient-reported outcome measure designed to determine the current level of disease control in patients with chronic urticaria (CU). Recently, a Brazilian UCT was developed, but its validity and reliability are unknown. Method: The clinimetric properties of the Brazilian UCT short form (UCTsh) and its long form (UCTlg) were determined in 130 patients with CU. In parallel, the urticaria activity scores (UAS) that covers 7 days (UAS7) and 28 days (UAS28) were used to assess disease activity. Subsequently, the results were analyzed statistically to determine the validity, reliability, and interpretability of the Brazilian UCT versions. Results: A total of 107 female (82%) and 23 male patients with CU completed both versions of the Brazilian UCT. Both of the Brazilian UCT versions showed excellent internal consistency reliability. In addition, the Brazilian UCT results showed strong correlations with UAS7 and UAS28 results, which indicated high levels of convergent validity. The test-retest reliability was examined in a subsample of 27 patients with CU and was found to be excellent. Notably, the results of both Brazilian UCT versions correlated extensively, which suggested that the UCTsh can replace the UCTlg without changing the UCT results. Conclusion: The Brazilian UCT is a valid and reliable tool for assessing disease control. To facilitate the use of the Brazilian UCT in global studies and to put a stronger focus on the specificity, we propose that the same cutoff values for well-controlled disease should be used as identified in the original publication of the UCT, i.e., ≥12 points for the UCTsh.

Abstract:
AbstractThe objective of this research was to design and compare nucleus breeding plans that might be recommended to the breeders of Brazilian dairy cattle. Plans for native dairy breeds were compared for the change of genetic merit in milk yield and in the economic return at 25-year investment periods. Effects of nucleus herd and commercial population sizes on genetic gain and net income were examined. Investment value of plans was studied for differences in the efficiency of embryo transfer techniques and in the sale price of cows and young bulls on genetic merit. Parent selection was based on records on individuals (for females), their full- and half-sibs, their dam, full-and half-sibs of their sire and their dam and their grandam. Within herd sire selection was restricted to a maximum of one bull per full-sib family. No matings of full-sibs were allowed. Annual economic summaries considered the age distribution of animals within herds. Alternative plans were investigated for their revenue, expense and net income streams and their investment value. The cumulative genetic gain of selected animals in lactational milk production was 1639 kg and 1435 kg for large plans with 64 donors (L) and small plans with 32 donors (S), respectively. The initial genetic lift for a population size of 20 000 animals was equal to 279 kg. When the size of the commercial population was increased to 50 000 animals, the lift was increased by 10%. Profitability in the different plans was achieved after the sale of cows and young bulls. The difference between cumulative discounted net returns at year 25 for L and S was proportional to the sale prices placed on the genetic merit of cows and bulls. The programmes of genetic improvement described were profitable and should be recommended to the breeders of Brazilian dairy cattle. Considering the criteria of gain to cost, the smaller plan seems to be the most reasonable to implement.

This paper reviews the current body of literature on participatory design (PD) for game design, including participatory design elements, participatory design in education, and the current challenges that game designers and developers encountered. This paper also contains the findings of a survey among game designers in Brazil (N=29) concerning their use of participatory design techniques during the design process in their studios. The survey results show that playtesting is the most common technique that they utilise in order to improve player experience. Several of the respondents admitted that they have considered player participation during other stages of game development. This paper is concluded with a critical overview of the role of participatory design in game design and potential uses for games for learning. The literature and survey-based findings in this paper may be of benefit to game design scholars and designers who are intent on critically analysing the use of participatory design in the game design process.

Abstract:
SUMMARY BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies with dietary variables are complex methodologically, being the researcher responsible for anticipating, controlling, reducing and preventing methodological errors. Obesity accounts for almost one-third of the world's population and has consequences for childhood and adolescence. Multifactorial disorder must be faced in several aspects, being food and physical activity, modifiable risk factors. The EBANS aims to perform a diagnosis of the nutritional status of the Brazilian population from 15 to 65 years old, from all regions, and the parameters associated with obesity, with several possibilities of correlating data. METHODOLOGICAL PROCESS: Part of the ELANS study (n = 9218), the EBANS (n = 2000) has a weighted sample and data collection that allows: to evaluate the socioeconomic level of the population; perform a diagnosis of nutritional status (through anthropometric variables); to evaluate food intake (R24h and FFQ for beverages); and evaluate physical activity practice (IPAQ-long and accelerometer). METHODOLOGICAL OPPORTUNITIES: With national coverage, EBANS has the potential to compose regional analyzes, portray the current nutritional epidemiological condition, food consumption and physical activity pattern of the Brazilian population, at different life stages, and may have their data analyzed together or stratified, offering useful subsidies for the formulation of public policies. METHODOLOGICAL CHALLENGES: Each methodological step was designed to reduce errors and biases related to methodological challenges. CAAE REGISTRATION: 31670314.8.0000.5567. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Of great potential for future data analysis, EBANS tries to contribute to the generation of knowledge to foment policies and actions capable of changing the current obesity scenario.

Abstract:
High-temperature properties of 10 samples of iron ore from Brazil, Australia and China were measured. Several conclusions were made based on these experimental results. Assimilability of Brazilian ore, Australian ore and Chinese ore concentrate were low, high and medium, respectively. Optimal fluidity of liquid phase was observed in 2 types of Brazilian ores (BR-B, BR-C), 1 type of Australian ore (AU-C) and 1 type of Chinese ore (CH-D). For self-strength of the bonding phase, Australian ore presented low levels, while Brazilian and Chinese ore presented high levels. According to the experimental results of high-temperature properties of iron ore, schemes of ore blending optimization were designed and sinter pot test using these blends were performed. The results indicated that ore blends composed of 30~45% Brazilian ores + 25~50% Australian ores + 20~30% Chinese concentrates presented excellent sintering results, considering both the performance of the processing and quality of the sinter. Therefore this experiment has proved that ore blending optimization combining high temperature properties can lead to more efficient sintering mixes.

Abstract:
The perception of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) mid vowels is mainly investigated by foreign researchers who work with learners of Brazilian Portuguese, native speakers of English or Spanish. In Brazil, this field has been poorly explored. This work contributes to filling this gap by investigating the perception of two Brazilian Portuguese minimal vowel pairs in the group of 103 native Russian speakers and nine French speakers, most of them residing in Brazil. The test has been designed to evaluate the perception of the mid high and low front vowels [e] - [ε], and the mid high and low back vowels [o] - [ɔ]. The test is conducted online and includes 30 trials distributed in three types of tasks: image identification (8 trials), vowel identification (4) and word discrimination (18). It also contains a short sociolinguistic questionnaire. Our findings indicate that native Russian speakers do not differentiate the Brazilian Portuguese mid vowels very well: the mean percentage of the correct answers in the Russophone group was 68%, while in the French group it was 87% and in the Brazilian control group 99%. No correlation was found between the percentage of correct answers and residence time in Brazil or type of language instruction. As next steps, we plan to investigate the differentiation of the Brazilian Portuguese open and close mid vowels by Russophones at the level of production. We also intend to create a training corpus and develop strategies for perception training of the Brazilian Portuguese mid vowels, monitoring their efficiency at different time points.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this paper is to propose a corpus-based research methodology for comparing quantitative aspects of collocational patterning in translated and non-translated texts of the same language. The main issue under investigation is whether collocational patterns tend to be less diverse (i.e. reduced in range) in translated than non-translated texts. A pilot study is carried out with a view to examining the overall number of collocates and the distribution of collocations in relation to a given node in the translated and non-translated subcorpora. The data is drawn from a comparable corpus of Brazilian Portuguese which consists of two separate subcorpora: one made up of translated Brazilian Portuguese and the other consisting of non-translated Brazilian Portuguese. Both subcorpora are designed according to the same criteria and specifications and are of similar size.

Abstract NOTCH1 is a proto-oncogene with activating mutations described in a variety of malignancies, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). While the prognostic significance of NOTCH1 mutations remains controversial in ALL, recent data suggest that NOTCH1 PEST domain mutations are associated with adverse prognosis in patients with CLL. NOTCH1 mutations are found in around 8% of CLL patients at diagnosis, and since this disease has a heterogeneous clinical course and few prognostic markers, we aimed at designing a fast, cost effective and robust assay to detect NOTCH1 PEST domain mutations in patients with CLL. While 92% of the mutations in NOTCH1 PEST domain found in CLL are insertions or deletions, only 8% are represented by point mutations. Therefore we decided to use a fragment analysis approach in our assay. Given that a single mutation (c.7544_7545delCT), represents roughly 75% of all PEST domain mutations in CLL we designed a test that can, at the same time, detect the presence of this mutation specifically and also any insertion or deletion in exon 34. We designed a PCR reaction using one FAM-labeled forward primer anchored at codon 2407 and two reverse primers. One specific for the c.7544_7545delCT mutation anchored at codon 2414 yielding a product of 356 base pairs (bp) and one anchored at codon 2425, yielding a product of 391 bp, comprising the hot spot for mutations in the NOTCH1 PEST domain. Primers were designed with Primer3 software (http://frodo.wi.mit.edu/) and the specificity of the reaction evaluated using the tool “PCR in silico” (http://genome.ucsc.edu/cgi-bin/hgPcr?command=start). The test yields three possible outputs: a) A single 391 bp peak: wild type samples b) Three peaks (391 bp, 389 bp and 356 bp): heterozygous for c.7544_7545delCT c) Two peaks (391 bp and another bigger or smaller, depending on the size of insertion / deletion): another insertion or deletion, but not c.7544_7545delCT. We have studied 91 blood samples from CLL patients in diverse disease stages and found NOTCH1 mutations in 16 patients, (17.5%). When only patients with trisomy 12, isolated or with other cytogenetic abnormalities, were analyzed (N=16), we found an incidence of NOTCH1 mutations of 43% (7/16). At the same time, the frequency of NOTCH1 mutations in patients without trisomy 12 was 12% (9/75), in agreement with previous reports. All mutated cases (N=13) had the mutation c.7544_7545delCT. In conclusion, we have designed a robust, fast and cost effective assay for routine identification of NOTCH1 PEST domain mutations, suitable for implementation in the clinical setting. Additionally we have found that the incidence and distribution among cytogenetic groups of NOTCH1 mutation in Brazilian patients with CLL is similar to the incidence described in other cohorts. A – Wild Type NOTCH1 revealed by the presence of a single 391 bp peak. B – Presence of heterozygous c.7544_7545delCT mutation evidenced by the presence of a 356 bp peak, corresponding to the allele specific pcr peak; and a double peak at 391 bp and 389 bp positions, corresponding to the wild type product (391 bp) and to the mutated product (389 bp) detected with the wild type primers. We describe a new methodology for separating organic temper from archaeological ceramics from Brazilian Amazonia. These experimental procedures were designed to directly date ceramic samples by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). An evaluation of the total carbon indicates the samples’ potential for dating.

Abstract:
<p class="Normal1">In the following interview, Pogge focuses his attention on the situation in Brazil, a country that he says can exert its increasing influence on the design of global institutions. He anticipates the challenges coming for Brazil in combating poverty and gender disparities. He discusses the positive and negative aspects of the <em>Bolsa Família </em>programme, and he suggests that the government should extend its benefits to a larger proportion of the population in order to gain more support from the public. He believes the <em>Bolsa Família</em> programme is well-designed and that its implementation is essential to mitigating the absurd inequalities that so strongly polarize society and jeopardize democracy in Brazil. To distribute resources to the poor is not a question of charity, as it was considered in the old days, he explains. He finds no justification for affluent Brazilians to control all the country’s resources while the poor are deprived of their fair share. Pogge is also concerned that, owing to increasing capital mobility, globalization will tend to benefit Brazil’s rich, who also find it much easier to evade taxes. Therefore, in addition to the intervention of social programmes, Pogge recommends that the Brazilian government ensure that the country’s wealth is properly taxed and distributed.</p>

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the influencing factors on cattle breeders’ payment system choices using cross-sectional data collected in the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul. The investigation aims to analyze the problem of value appropriation comparing the payment based on carcass index with live weight mode under the perspective of “bovine for slaughtering” as a multidimensional product with various attributes. Design/methodology/approach This study employs a generalized order logistic regression model in a survey with 69 cattle breeders’ interview to conduct the empirical analysis. Findings The empirical results show that measurement difficulties and collective actions influence farmers’ choice to a less efficient payment system in quality terms and value appropriation problems, while the trust level in the slaughterhouse pushes to a more efficient system. Furthermore, trust was presented as more important than technological aspects and long-time relationship as well as collective action corroborates to increase bargaining power and to solve conflicts. In sum, trust, measurement and bargaining power brought traditional and alternative solutions to solve conflicts such as well-designed payment indicators, collective actions and transaction costs. Originality/value This study used first-hand survey and proxy variables on cattle farmers’ payment system choices. Another contribution is the focus on two regions with two different payment systems in the same institutional environment in a way to suggest mechanisms of private strategies and public policy to reduce opportunistic value appropriation as well as decreasing conflict.
