Abstract:
This article looks into the postcolonial Arabic narrative of Ghassan Kanafani to examine its underplayed existential and naturalistic aspects. Postcolonial texts (and their exegeses) deal with the effects of colonization/imperialism. They are expected to be political and are judged accordingly. Drawing on Kanafani’s Men in the Sun (1963), I argue that the intersection among existentialism and naturalism, on the one hand, and postcolonialism, on the other, intensifies the political relevance of the latter theory and better establishes the politically committed nature of Kanafani’s fiction of resistance. In the novella, the sun and the desert are a pivotal existential symbol juxtaposed against the despicable life led by three Palestinian refugees. The gruesome death we encounter testifies to the absurdity of life after attempts at self-definition through making choices. The gritty existence characteristic of Kanafani's work makes his representation of the lives of alienated characters more accurate and more visceral. Kanafani uses philosophical and sociological theories to augment the political nature of his protest fiction, one acting within postcolonial parameters of dispossession to object to different forms of imperialism and diaspora. Therefore, this article explores how global critical frameworks (naturalism and existentialism) enrich the localized contexts essential to any study of postcolonial literature and equally move the traditional national allegory of Kanafani to a more realist/unidealistic level of political indictment against oppression.

Abstract:
Transoceanic passage brought nearly 189,000 immigrants from Japan to Brazil between 1908 and 1941. They were often geographically isolated in Japanese “colonies” as coffee plantation workers and thus able to maintain their Japanese linguistic and cultural identity. A new imagined community coalesced in the several Japanese-language immigrant newspapers that also published locally produced serial fiction. This paper reads two representative works by Sugi Takeo, pen name of Takei Makoto (1909-2011), who was a prolific contributor of original content to the Burajiru Jihô newspaper. In the short stories, “Kafé-en o uru” (Selling the coffee plantation, 1933) and “Tera Roshya” (Terra rossa, 1937), it is the moonshine sellers who see steady profits from every race and type of immigrant laborer while the Japanese newcomers who naively dream of riches by bringing coffee to market reap only a bitter brew of poverty for their efforts.

Resumo: No romance epistolar O marido da adúltera, publicado em 1882 pelo escritor e jornalista Lúcio de Mendonça, encontram-se traços marcantes e inequívocos da estética naturalista desenvolvida, sobretudo, por Émile Zola. Neste trabalho, pretende-se verificar de que modo o idealizador da Academia Brasileira de Letras recebeu as ideias do Naturalismo e as inseriu em sua obra, verificando o processo de adaptação executado pelo autor brasileiro, que soube dialogar com a estética naturalista em voga na época, aplicando muitos de seus princípios, discordando de alguns deles. Cabe observar, igualmente, o fato de que Lúcio de Mendonça optou pelo romance epistolar, gênero pouco utilizado no Brasil do século XIX, mas fundamental para a construção desta obra. Abstract:
The Victorian need to compartmentalise and define women’s sexuality in terms of opposing binaries was paralleled by the vague idea that the period’s French and British literatures were at odds with one another. Elucidating the deep connections between, and common concerns shared by, French Naturalist and Realist and British New Woman authors, this thesis shatters the dichotomies that attempted to structure and define women’s sexuality in the mid- to late- nineteenth century. The thesis focusses on novels and short stories by French authors Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant, and New Woman authors Sarah Grand, Ménie Muriel Dowie and Vernon Lee. In a time during which the feminist movement was gaining momentum, and female sexuality was placed at the heart of a range of discourses, and scrutinised from a number of different angles – not only in literature, but in medicine, psychology, sexology, criminology – the consideration of the female sexual self and her subjectivity brings together the work of authors whose oeuvres have been largely considered as antithetical. Previous work has indeed shown the centrality of female sexuality to both literatures, yet never compared them. This thesis rediscovers the significance of both literatures’ investment in a discourse revolving around female sexuality by contrasting the French male authors with the British female writers, and uncovering unexpected parallels in their claims about the contemporary situation of women. Simone de Beauvoir’s Le Deuxième Sexe’s feminist philosophy frames the thesis’s comparative analysis, questioning and re-examining these authors’ representations of female sexuality. The ideas of sensuality and rationality, motherhood, reproduction, marriage, and prostitution thus become recurring concerns throughout it. The thesis’s first chapter considers the female as sexual subject and/or object of the male gaze, in a range of New Woman and French literature. The second and third chapters are organised around the themes of marriage and prostitution, and the final chapter considers issues of female sexuality within the fantastic short story.

Causes strangeness that best-selling fiction books lists published in Brazilian newspapers and magazines in the last years are almost exclusively frequented by foreign authors, especially when we observe that the situation doesnt repeat at the lists of no-fiction books. What explains this phenomenon? Will it be that national authors of fiction, with its histories and narrative forms, dont gather Brazilian readers interest, as non-fiction authors does? Or the problem lies on publishers, that prefers to invest in books with success already tested in other countries? And the readers: why do they prefer foreign fiction instead of national? Abstract:
This thesis examines the legacies of literary naturalism in twentieth- and twenty- first-century British fiction. My work aims to look beyond the reductive summation of naturalism as an offshoot of realism, to demonstrate that the innovative developments in the construction of narrative and the reassessments of novelistic subject-matter often associated with modernism and postmodernism can actually be traced back to naturalism. My extended introduction discusses the dialogues that have effaced the relevance of naturalism to British literature and seeks to provide a working definition of the genre that can account for the paradoxical definitions offered by naturalism’s founder, Emile Zola. I go on to delineate the characteristics particular to naturalism and argue that the genre opens up new methods for experimentation that have been vital to the development of British literature during the past hundred years. My work attends to a survey of twentieth-century writing and comprises three extended single-author case studies. Each study matches a generic feature of naturalism to a text or texts — James Joyce’s Dubliners with the notion of naturalist entropy, George Orwell’s Burmese Days and Keep the Aspidistra Flying with naturalism’s tendency to create paranoid narratives, J.G. Ballard’s The Atrocity Exhibition and Crash with the naturalist gaze — to draw out the diverse ways that these writers have used naturalist principles as means for portraying their cultures. I conclude by examining how naturalism’s legacy has endured into the twenty-first century, observing how the fiction of Ian McEwan negotiates an engagement with the genre by returning to its interest in evolutionary biology. The key finding of my research is that British writers have turned to naturalism as providing the best means for problematizing the notion of endings and of looking at the world like a naturalist in order to access ‘truth’.

Os relatos de viagem marcaram a história da América Latina e, consequentemente, a literatura e os escritores da região. A presente pesquisa procura pensar se a viagem continua sendo um tema recorrente na literatura contemporânea produzida no local. Nesses relatos o deslocamento veloz e a mobilidade constante são traços pertinentes, que alguns teóricos consideram como marcas da contemporaneidade. Tais características afetariam de forma diferente os escritores latino-americanos e seus escritos, já acostumados a um ponto de vista periférico, a ter como referência outras culturas? Ainda é possível detectar resquícios e heranças da tradição dos relatos de viagem na produção contemporânea? Para pensar esta questão, quatro diários de viagem ficcionalizados foram selecionados, de escritores argentinos e brasileiros: Una luna, de Martín Caparrós; Nove noites, de Bernardo Carvalho; Mis dos mundos, de Sergio Chejfec, e Lorde, de João Gilberto Noll. Todos os textos tratam de autoficções, em que o protagonista, com as mesmas características do autor do livro, cruza fronteiras em uma viagem a trabalho. Assim como os escritos dos navegantes e muitos dos relatos de viagem que marcaram a região, há um outro que estimula e pauta aquele deslocamento. A construção de uma figura de escritor, o lugar ou a forma de inserção encontrados pelo autor latino-americano no mundo contemporâneo são alguns temas recorrentes dessas narrativas.
The travel texts are a mark for the history of Latin America, and, consequently, the literature and the writers from there. This work analyses if the travel still a recurring theme in contemporary latin america literature. In this narratives the displacement and the mobility are relevant characteristics, that some thinkers consider as a brand of the contemporanity. The latin american writers feel it in a diferent way? It is still possible to detected remnants and legacies of the tradition of travel accounts in contemporary production? To think about that, four fictionalized travel diaries were analyses, from brazilian and argentine writers: Una luna, from Martín Caparrós; Nove noites, from Bernardo Carvalho; Mis dos mundos, from Sergio Chejfec, and Lorde, from João Gilberto Noll. In all of them the character seems like the author of the book, and go to other countries in a work travel. Like many travel texts that marks the latin america, there is an other that estimulate the displacement. The construction of a writer figure, the place of the latin america writer in the contemporary world are some recurring themes of those narratives.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the wandering Jew motif outside its usual European centre in an analysis of Samuel Rawet's fiction of home and displacement in Brazil. In the tales written by this Brazilian Jewish writer, one can distinctly hear the struggle between incompatible ideas of ‘home’ and ‘away’, of ‘mother tongue’ and ‘foreign tongue’, of ‘Brazilianness’ and ‘Jewishness’. The diaspora experience is never a happy celebration of deracination or an exercise in the freedom of unattachment. There is little room for mystification here. Hence, this chapter seeks to argue that his literature is a restless testimony to the risks of imagining home in a language not one's own.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the concept of the name ‘Virginia Woolf’ as a ‘signature’. While Julia Kristeva uses Woolf's name in About Chinese Women as a signature for the summation of depression and suicide, Brazilian cronista Paulo Mendes Campos's lyrical review of Virginia Woolf's Orlando presents the name as a signature that gestures towards interminable movements of life and makes fiction an element of permanent novelty. In this sense, Campos finds contemporaneity with Woolf, thus momentarily escaping the limiting reality of his own place in time. Campos’s essay ends with the word ‘life’. Even when death is at the heart of a sentence (‘I can’t go on’), life is its final word. The task of this chapter is to bring Kristeva and Campos into coexistence with Woolf’s final philosophy, as presented in Woolf’s autobiographical essay ‘A sketch of the past’, and also to make Kristeva and Campos our contemporaries in an undulant conversation about writing and life, not death – for it is interesting that conversation implies coexistence in its etymological roots: -con (with) -versari (to turn), which together form the Latin verb conversare, to turn round and round and round, and its deponent conversari, to live with, dwell together.
