Abstract:
<p>The political development in the Western world is transforming. Political party participation decreases as well as other non-profit associations. This individualistic development is described as a threat to democracy. Nevertheless, some scholars argue that the political participation is a transformation into a new type of participation that instead could strengthen the democracy.</p><p>The political parties are the foundation of the democratic system and they receive their power by representing the citizens in the decision making process. Yet, the parties transform from organisations with a close linkage to their core groups, to catch-all organisations that aim to maximise votes. Since the goal for parties is to attain as much power as possible, new parties and other political actors have effectively been kept out of political system.</p><p>The individualistic development is observed through the political consumerism in this thesis. The political consumption is described as a political activity where consuming is used as the mean to impact. To actively select products that represent certain values influence companies to work for those values. It is a free individualistic movement without rules. If asked to describe the typical political consumer it would be a young female with a higher education and thus, an income above average. The political consumer prefers to be involved in issues of personal interest rather than broad party politics. Companies are believed to contain a great deal of power in society and must therefore also obtain responsibility.</p><p>The problems associated to political consumerism are connected to poor information. Citizens may make wrong political decisions since the information presented to them is poor or faulty. Another problem is the lack of tools to measure political consumption; we do not know how important it is in comparison to other political activities.</p><p>It is difficult to compare traditional politics with political consumerism since they target different issues and work in different ways. However, political consumerism is not a threat to traditional politics and should instead be recognised as a compliment.</p><br><p>Den politiska utvecklingen i västvärlden håller på att förändras.

Abstract:
How should central banks conduct and communicate their policies to serve the goal of stabilizing the macroeconomy? This thesis -- consisting of three self-contained essays on dynamic macroeconomics -- is mainly intended as a progress report on exploring the normative aspect of monetary policy. The main result of the first essay is, that in the presence of idiosyncratic risk, the public revelation of information about uncertain aggregate outcomes can be detrimental. By announcing informative signals on non-insurable aggregate risk, the policy maker distorts agents'' insurance incentives and increases the riskiness of the optimal allocation that is feasible in self-enforceable arrangements. We consider a monetary authority that may reveal changes in the inflation target, and document that the negative effect of distorted insurance incentives can very well dominate conventional effects in favor for the release of better information. In the second essay, we study optimal monetary policy with the nominal interest rate as the single policy instrument. Firms set prices in a staggered way without indexation and real money balances contribute separately to households'' utility. The optimal deterministic steady state under commitment is the Friedman rule for a broad range of parameters. Optimal monetary policy in the short run is then characterized by stabilization of the nominal interest rate instead of inflation stabilization as the predominant principle. In the third essay, I examine whether the existence and the timing of real balance effects contribute to the determination of the absolute price level. As the main novel result, I show that there exists a unique price level sequence that is consistent with an equilibrium under interest rate policy, if beginning-of-period money yields transaction services. Predetermined real money balances can then serve as a state variable, implying that interest rate setting should be passive -- a violation of the Taylor-principle.

Kappaz, Philip C. 1956. "Breakdown." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1994. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc935783/.

Abstract:
Breakdown is a 17 minute, single movement work for orchestra in five sections. It is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 Bb clarinets, 2 bassoons, 3 Bb trumpets, 4 horns in F, 3 trombones, tuba, percussion, piano, and strings. The percussion consists of a tam-tam, 5 break drums, 4 timbales, 2 gourds, chimes, marimba, vibraphone, snare drum, 2 field drums, bass drum and tympani. The inspiration for this work is the poetry of Bruce Weigl which deals with many facets of the Vietnam experience. One particular work from his collection Song of Napalm, the poem "Breakdown", provided the basis for the emotional and structural content of the music. There are two primary sources of pitch material in the music of Breakdown, both of which have links to the Vietnam War. The name of a soldier who was killed in Vietnam, Miles Cooper, was used to generate a basic pitch set and a series of variation sets that provide much of the harmonic and melodic material in Breakdown. There derived sets are supported by the use of phrases and motives from the hymn Jewels, which celebrates the love of God for his children, and providesan indirect link to the subject of the piece, the war in Vietnam.

Ghiglino, Maxime. "La volonté précontractuelle : socle de la formation contractuelle." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017AIXM0483.

Full text
Abstract:
The pre-contractual willingness is the basis of contractual training. During the negotiation, the parties draw up their requirements and develop their volitions. The demonstrations of willingness at the initiation of the contract are therefore the outcome of a volitional process for each contracting party. In spite of appearances, the legal entitlement does not ignore the will of contracting parties at the negotiating phase. It is interested in the mechanisms of elaboration of this willingness. The perception of the pre-contractual willingness is the essential stake throughout the apprehension stage of the final deed. It is highly concerned by the demonstration’s ways of a willingness. These delineate punctually the willingness of their originator. It reassures by their perceptibility. However, these manifestations are not always unambiguous like expected. Indeed, the doubt innervate the pre-contractual stage and more particularly the manifestation phase of a willingness which emerges here. Confronted with this challenge, the legal entitlement must adapts. It engages to react by trying to adapt the outcome of these manifestations. In this way, the contract will ultimately become a partial resurgence of the manifestation of veritable willingness. It can therefore be comprehended as the imperfect expression of pre-contractual willingness at its source. In essence, the border between the pre-contractual and the contractual is tenuous. The analysis of the pre-contractual willingness and its manifestations reveals the existing links between these two notions

Tremas, Laure. "Pre-breakdown and breakdown phenomena in air along insulating solids." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017GREAT117.

Full text
Abstract:
Mots-clés : appareillages moyenne tension, tension de claquage, caractérisation diélectriques, streamers, courant transitoires, visualisations<br>Comprehension and control of phenomena occurring under high voltage at the interface between a gas and a solid insulator. In the context of SF6 replacement in medium-voltage apparatus, a study of mixed electrical insulation (gas (air) / insulating solid) was carried out. The aim is to determine the influence of the nature of the solid on breakdown voltage. For this purpose several materials have been selected such as epoxy / silica (reference material of Schneider Electric), PA6T / 66.GF50 (new material for this application) and several other materials allowing a better understanding of the phenomenon (PTFE, PC, PP, ...). The dielectric characterizations allowed us to measure potential decay, currents and permittivities according to the nature of the materials. From this data, breakdown measurements have been carried out. Two configurations of electric field were tested (parallel and perpendicular to the solid). The "point-to-plane" geometry was selected, allowing the observation of partial discharges before breakdown and therefore a study of the propagation of the discharge and not of the initiation. These measurements show the influence of the solid on the breakdown voltage, with an indirect influence of the nature of the material and its water content. In our configuration, the presence of a solid insulator lowers the dielectric strength. The relative permittivity is the main parameter influencing the breakdown voltage, with a reduction of it in the presence of materials with high permittivity (alumina). It was not possible to establish a link between surface potential decay measurements and breakdown voltages. In order to characterize the development of the electric discharge along the solid insulation, visualizations and transient current measurements were achieved. The visualizations allowed the observation two types of discharges before the breakdown. First, the development of a surface discharge "surface streamer", followed by a discharge in the gas "volume streamer". These observations lead us concluding that streamers leading to breakdown develop predominantly in air above the surface in the parallel field configuration. Current measurements provide information on the initiation of the discharge. There exists a reduction of voltage and initiation time of the discharge in the presence of a solid. Similar results have been obtained for a wide range of materials. However, several low permittivity materials (PTFE, PP) show a different behaviour, with higher and scattered time delay and initiation voltage, similar to those obtain in air without solid. It has been shown that initiation and propagation do not influence the breakdown voltage in poi nt-plane geometry. The transition to breakdown mainly determines the breakdown voltage.Key words: medium voltage apparatus, breakdown voltage, dielectric characterization, streamers, transient currents, visualizations

Pearson, Charlotte. "Money talks? : direct payments and competing policy discourses." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2000. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3737/.

Full text
Abstract:
Implementation of the Community Care (Direct Payments) Act 1996 in April 1997 enabled local authorities to make cash payments to service users under the age of 65 with physical and sensory impairments, learning difficulties and mental health problems. This gave users control over money spent on meeting their community care needs rather than receiving services arranged for them by the local authority. The policy is often represented as a victory for the disability movement and as a push towards independent living and social justice. However, direct payments also need to be understood as part of a wider market discourse prominent in the restructuring of welfare. Therefore, a growing culture of localised care markets led by local authorities with increasing ideological diversity may ultimately erode the scope for independent living, choice and control. This thesis examines the impact of these policy discourses informing the planning constructions and user experiences of direct payments in two contrasting areas - one in England and one in Scotland. A third authority - also in Scotland - is examined where direct payments have yet to be implemented and an indirect payment scheme remains in place. In the English authority - 'East Anglia' - findings show direct payments promoted both as part of a wider marketisation of community care and development of independent living services. Implementation has seen a relatively rapid promotion of policy but this is found to be located within wider New Right confines of cost efficiency and accountability. Like East Anglia, the Scottish authority - 'East Scotland' - has also demonstrated a long-term commitment to independent living services and has worked in partnership with the local disability movement to establish a momentum for policy change. However, wider policy use is shown to be restricted by a more dominant anti-market discourse. Similarly for the second Scottish authority in the study - 'West Scotland' - planning fears of service privatisation coupled with limited disability activism and a chaotic aftermath of service reorganisation has resulted in non-implementation of direct payments. By focusing on the impact of these discourses alongside wider controls made by central government, this research examines user experiences of direct payments in East Anglia and East Scotland and indirect payments in West Scotland through a series of semi-structured interviews. Additional information is generated through a discourse analysis of key policy documents and discussions with planners. Whilst findings highlight an overall enthusiasm for both direct and indirect payments, user experiences are shown to be strongly influenced by market and independent living discourses in each area. This has implications not only for individual user constructions of independence but draws more widely on an understanding of collective disability identities.

Abstract:
Did you hear where the thesis found its ancestors? They were in the "parent-thesis"! This joke, whether you laughed at it or not, contains a fascinating and mysterious quality: humor. Humor is something so incredibly human that if you squint, the two words can even look the same. As such, humor is not often considered something that computers can understand. But, that doesn't mean we won't try to teach it to them. In this thesis, we propose the system Laff-O-Tron to attempt to predict when the audience of a public speech would laugh by looking only at the text of the speech. To do this, we create a corpus of over 1700 TED Talks retrieved from the TED website. We then adapted various techniques used by researchers to identify humor in text. We also investigated features that were specific to our public speaking environment. Using supervised learning, we try to classify if a chunk of text would cause the audience to laugh or not based on these features. We examine the effects of each feature, classifier, and size of the text chunk provided. On a balanced data set, we are able to accurately predict laughter with up to 75% accuracy in our best conditions. Medium level conditions prove to be around 70% accuracy; while our worst conditions result in 66% accuracy. Computers with humor recognition capabilities would be useful in the fields of human computer interaction and communications. Humor can make a computer easier to interact with and function as a tool to check if humor was properly used in an advertisement or speech.

Abstract:
Massively parallel arrays of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) have attracted significant research interests because of their ability to (i) average out inhomogeneities of individual SWNTs, (ii) provide larger on currents, and (iii) reduce noise to provide higher cutoff frequency for radio frequency applications. However, the array contains both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs and the presence of metallic nanotube in an aligned array negatively affects the device properties. Therefore, it is essential to selectively remove metallic nanotubes to obtain better transistor properties. It was recently found that although such a selective removal can be effective for a low density array, it does not work in a high density array and lead to a correlated breakdown of the entire array giving rise to a nanofissure pattern. In order to obtain a deeper understanding of such a correlated SWNT breakdown, we studied the breakdown power in the successive electrical breakdown of both low ( < 2 /um) and high density (>10 /um) SWNT arrays. We show that the breakdown voltage in successive electrical breakdown increases for low density array while it decreases for high density arrays. The estimated power required for the breakdown remains constant for low density arrays while it decreases for high density arrays in successive electrical breakdowns. We also show that, while a simple model of parallel resistor network can explain the breakdown of low density array, it cannot explain the behavior for the high density array implying that the correlation between the closely spaced parallel nanotubes plays a big role in the successive breakdowns of the high density SWNTs.<br>M.S.<br>Masters<br>Physics<br>Sciences<br>Physics

Abstract:
Streamer characteristics, breakdown strengths and gassing behaviour of insulating liquids under electric stresses are taken into account for a reliable design and safe operation of the transformer. Ester liquids which are biodegradable and have high fire point have been widely used in distribution transformers and some power transformers in recent years. It is also interesting to introduce ester liquids into High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter transformers due to the fast development of HVDC transmission lines. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate the pre-breakdown, breakdown characteristics and gassing behaviour of a synthetic ester liquid under DC and various impulse voltages where a mineral oil is tested as the benchmark. A comprehensive study of streamer characteristics and breakdown strength of the mineral oil and the synthetic ester liquid under both positive and negative DC voltages was carried out in the point-plane electric fields. Characteristics of streamer length, propagation velocity and shape were analysed based on shadowgraph images obtained at a gap distance of 10 mm, using a multi-channel ultra-high speed camera. Streamer inception voltages with the tip radii of 5 µm, 10 µm, 20 µm and 50 µm and breakdown voltages at various gaps of 2 mm, 5 mm, 10 mm, 20 mm and 30 mm were also investigated. The results indicate that there is no obvious streamer propagation (less than about 10% of the gap distance) under negative polarity even when the applied voltage approaches breakdown voltage. At the same applied voltage level, the streamer in the synthetic ester liquid propagates faster and further than that in the mineral oil. As a result, the breakdown voltages of the synthetic ester liquid are lower than those of the mineral oil at all the gap distances investigated under both polarities. Experimental and modelling studies of pre-breakdown and breakdown phenomena in the mineral oil and the synthetic ester liquid under impulse waveforms with different tail-time were carried out in the point-plane electric fields. A compact solid-state switch based impulse generator was used to provide different impulse waveforms from short tail-time to 'step-like' tail-time: 0.8/8 µs, 0.8/14 µs, 0.8/30 µs and 0.8/3200 µs. A point-plane electrode configuration with a small gap distance of 10 mm and a tip radius of 10 µm was used. The results indicate that the shorter tail-time impulse waveform results in a shorter stopping length and higher breakdown voltage; however it does not affect the instantaneous breakdown voltage and time to breakdown. A mathematical model is therefore described to predict the breakdown voltage under different impulse waveforms. In addition, with the similar stopping length, higher energy injected from the short tail-time impulse caused the streamers to have more branches than those under the long tail-time impulse. The characteristics of fault gas generation in the mineral oil and the synthetic ester liquid under various levels of electrical faults were studied. A test platform with functions of automatic spark fault control and data acquisition was developed. The effects of spark numbers (from 20 to 500), gap distance (5 mm and 10 mm) and voltage levels (Vb-99.9% and 1.5Vb-99.9%) on fault gas generation in liquids were studied. The key gases in the mineral oil are H2 and C2H2, while the key gases in the synthetic ester liquid are H2, C2H2 and CO. The amount of fault gas generation increases linearly with the number of sparks. However, the number of sparks does not have an obvious effect on fault gas pattern and gas generation per unit fault energy in µL/J. Spark at a larger gap distance or under a higher applied breakdown voltage generates more fault gases due to higher injected fault energy.

Abstract:
In the past decade, alternative liquids such as synthetic ester liquid, natural ester liquid and gas-to-liquid (GTL) based oil are increasingly considered as alternatives to mineral oils in large high voltage power transformers to achieve better environmental, thermal and electrical performances. In regard to applications in power transformers, any alternative liquid needs to have sufficient lightning impulse strength. Lightning impulse strength as basic insulation level is essential for the insulation design of power transformers. In addition, tests under lightning impulse voltages tend to reveal the intrinsic properties of liquids. Therefore this thesis focuses on the pre-breakdown and breakdown performances of a number of alternative transformer liquids under lightning impulse voltages. A comprehensive study on streamer characteristics and breakdown voltages of a synthetic ester, a natural ester and a mineral oil with the presence of cellulose particle contaminations under both positive and negative standard lightning impulse voltages was investigated. The results indicated that in uniform electric fields, the lightning impulse breakdown voltages of the ester liquids and the mineral oil reduce gradually with the increase of cellulose particles. The detrimental effect is further enhanced when the particles are wet and when the effective stressed area/volume of electrode configurations is increased. At the same conditions, 50% lightning impulse breakdown voltages of the ester liquids are always comparable to that of the mineral oil. Further study of particle effect on streamer initiation and propagation showed that the presence of cellulose particles leading to reduced breakdown voltages in uniform electric field is due to the promotion of streamer initiation in liquids. This conclusion is valid for both the ester liquids and the mineral oil. The streamer and breakdown phenomena of an inhibited GTL based oil in a 50 mm point-plane gap were investigated under standard lightning impulse voltages. A mineral oil was also tested as a benchmark. The results of streamer stopping length and average propagation velocity showed that under positive polarity, the GTL oil has a higher breakdown voltage but a lower acceleration voltage than the mineral oil. Under negative polarity, the results showed that the GTL oil has a higher breakdown voltage and a higher acceleration voltage than the mineral oil. The difference of breakdown voltages and acceleration voltages between the GTL oil and the mineral oil can be explained by the fact that the GTL oil has a much lower concentration of aromatic compounds than the mineral oil. To quantitatively describe the streamer structure in transformer liquids, structure parameters including fractal dimension, branch number and length distribution of segments were obtained from the 2-D projected streamer images based on a self-developed MATLAB programme. The results showed that the fractal dimension, branch number and area of both slow and fast streamers in liquids follow the same relationship with applied voltage: the higher the voltage, the larger the value of these three parameters. Furthermore, it was also found that below the breakdown voltage, streamers in ester liquids have more branches and larger fractal dimension compared with mineral and GTL oils, which is especially prominent under negative polarity.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is the first internationally researched study on the evolution of United States- Vietnam relations from war to nascent strategic partnership. It is contracted for international publication. Comprised of archival and oral history research, including unprecedented access to Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. National Security Council, the thesis examines Hanoi's and Washington's bilateral diplomacy in relation to the second half of the Cold War (1947-91). The study provides an original and archive-based contribution to the historiography on relations between the United States and East Asia. In particular, it provides new information on and analyses of one of the most significant diplomatic engagements in the second half of the twentieth century. The interdisciplinary methodology utilized in this thesis originates in the scholarship of pluralist historians of international relations, such as Pierre Brocheux, David Elliott, Nayan Chanda, Daniel Hemery, Michael Leifer, and Rana Mitter. At the core of my work is the finding that the United States and Vietnam constructed full diplomatic relations from a complex cluster of seemingly opposing and incompatible parts. The relationship's bilateral diplomacy engaged hard and soft power, political ideologues and pragmatic realists, communism and democracy, a special presidential emissary and non-governmental organizations, cabinet secretaries and mid-level practitioners, quiet dialogue and mass media campaigns, secret intelligence and public opinion, nationalism and supra-nationalism, global Cold War strategy and domestic politics. My doctoral researches identified three new approaches for examining relations between East Asia and the United States: the agency of non-governmental organizations, especially those led by women; the structures, functions, and institutional worldviews of foreign policy-making institutions, with particular focus on the cross-cultural diplomacy of mid-level practitioners; and intelligence's role in bilateral, international, and transnational diplomacy. There has been no comprehensive examination of the evolution of United States-Vietnam relations during the two decades following the Second Indochina War (1959-75). The policy- making and practice of Hanoi's foreign affairs institutions and many of their counterparts in Washington remain unstudied. Historians have overlooked the definitive roles of the Asian affairs practitioners in the U.S. National Security Council, the Indochina Interagency Group, and mid-level Vietnamese and American operatives. These significant gaps in current historiography are studied in this thesis, which is the first broadly based examination of how the United States and Vietnam built full diplomatic relations from their legacies of war.

Pearl, Alexander James. "Breakdown : mechanical dysfunction and anthropomorphism." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2018. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/622002/.

Full text
Abstract:
Breakdown: Mechanical Dysfunction and Anthropomorphism is a practice-led research project examining the role of mechanical breakdown in the anthropomorphic process. Current theoretical approaches to mechanical breakdown identify it as a homogenous, revelatory event "a sort of breach opened up by objects." (Baudrillard, 2004: 62). Breakdown challenges this stereotyping and seeks to examine the range of gesture and affect that differing forms of mechanical breakdown exhibit. In doing so it also develops Sherry Turkle's notion of anthropomorphism as a connective rather than ascriptive process (2005: 351) in the light of Karen Barad's "performative account of material bodies" (2007: 139). Leading this research is Breakdown, the making, remaking, exhibition and reexhibition of 36 breaking-machines. These breaking-machines; simple mechanical devices made from reconfigured found materials; approach breakdown and fail during their exhibition. They are then repaired or reconfigured by the artist 'live' while still on show. Throughout the research this role of the artist as repairman became a key method. The continual recombination of human and machine responding to the call of breakdown allowed for a more detailed understanding of the gestures of mechanical breakdown. This performative relationship considers the posthuman decentring of the Vitruvian man in the writing of Rosi Braidotti (2013: 2) and Karen Barad's agential realism (Barad, 2007: 44) both of which insist that the human, rather than bounded and individual, be considered as part of a dispersed network of interacting parts. The thesis begins by investigating the performative relationship of Breakdown in detail. It describes a machine-human body that is materialised fleetingly by mechanical dysfunction. Through an intimate relationship with one machine, it then goes on to identify a typology of breakdown: seize, play, burnout and cutting loose, concluding that each emits differing expanding and contracting forces around which bodies disperse and coalesce. Finally, employing the flicker of a thaumatrope and the making of the science fiction film robot, the thesis posits that anthropomorphism is an integral element in the dissipation and reformation of human-machine bodies.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1998.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 79-81).<br>Our model of work is shaped by the places we choose to work and the tools we choose to work with. As we introduce new technologies and build new environments our model is changing. Today's virtual workplaces are grounded in models of work that have been reformed from our experiences using current technology in physical workspace. However we are discovering opportunities and possibilities for work in collaborative, virtual environments that question physical models. Emerging patterns of distributed collaboration in persistent virtual environments are changing the way we work in time and space, recasting our notion of workplace. Virtual workplaces are interpreted and experienced through metaphors that describe a space of potential for work occurrences. Through the lens of metaphors, this research focuses on breakdowns between collaborative work and the environment in which work occurs. If what we understand and predict is based on what we already know, then by examining the breakdowns between design and use of collaborative environments we can illuminate the space of possibilities for collaborative work.<br>by Thomas W.I. Abstract:
This study was an investigation of the phenomenon of dementia caregiving burden and breakdown in community caregiving situations. 109 carer subjects participated in the study, with 91 current carers - 17 via face-to-face interview and 74 via the internet, and 18 past carers - two via face-to-face interview and 16 via the internet, contributing their experiences of dementia caregiving. Two new carers' assessment tools were devised to meet more fully the requirements of the 'Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995' (DoH, 1995), namely the 'Dementia Caregiving Problems Questionnaire (DCPQ)' and 'Dementia Caregiving Burden Questionnaire (DCBQ)'. These new assessments were tested and demonstrated to be reliable, with Cronbach Alpha scores of 0.7029 and 0.8430 respectively, and are recommended for implementation in clinical practice. The key predictive risk factors for high caregiving burden in this study were perceived stress; omission of caregiving satisfactions; carer depression; perceived impact on quality of life; perceived helpfulness of community care services; behaviour problems - especially shouting, swearing and screaming, irritability and night disturbance; poor quality carer/dependant relationship; mood problems; perceived helpfulness of informal support; perceived impact of caregiving on dependant emotional well-being and, to a lesser extent, hours spent in caregiving. The key predictive risk factors for expected relinquishment of home caregiving were DCBQ score; perceived impact on quality of life; perceived stress; carer depression and, to a lesser extent, geographical distance in caregiving; perceived helpfulness of community care services and omission of positive feelings in the carer. Based on the above risk factors, a new 'Dementia Caregiving Breakdown Risk Assessment Tool (DCBRAT)' is proposed for use by community care managers to identify 'at risk' caregiving situations so that service interventions can be targetted more towards carers who are highly burdened in their role, who are at risk of developing psychological health problems or who may be nearing breakdown in their caregiving situation. Thus the effectiveness of service interventions may be maximised and optimal health gain for carers achieved, resulting in improved outcomes for people with dementia. The DCBRAT and the similarly proposed 'Conceptual Model of Dementia Caregiving, Burden and Breakdown' will need to be further tested in post-doctoral research.

Abstract:
In this work different approaches are undertaken to improve the understanding of the sucrose-to-starch pathway in developing potato tubers. At first an inducible gene expression system from fungal origin is optimised for the use of studying metabolism in the potato tuber. It is found that the alc system from Aspergillus nidulans responds more rapidly to acetaldehyde than ethanol, and that acetaldehyde has less side-effects on metabolism. The optimal induction conditions then are used to study the effects of temporally controlled cytosolic expression of a yeast invertase on metabolism of potato tubers. The observed differences between induced and constitutive expression of the invertase lead to the conclusion that glycolysis is induced after an ATP demand has been created by an increase in sucrose cycling. Furthermore, the data suggest that in the potato tuber maltose is a product of glucose condensation rather than starch degradation. In the second part of the work it is shown that the expression of a yeast invertase in the vacuole of potato tubers has similar effects on metabolism than the expression of the same enzyme in the apoplast. These observations give further evidence to the presence of a mechanism by which sucrose is taken up via endocytosis to the vacuole rather than via transporters directly to the cytosol. Finally, a kinetic in silico model of sucrose breakdown is presented that is able to simulate this part of potato tuber metabolism on a quantitative level. Furthermore, it can predict the metabolic effects of the introduction of a yeast invertase in the cytosol of potato tubers with an astonishing precision. In summary, these data prove that inducible gene expression and kinetic computer models of metabolic pathways are useful tools to greatly improve the understanding of plant metabolism.

Todoroki, Christine Louisa. "Primary and secondary log breakdown simulation." Thesis, University of Auckland, 1997. http://wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations/fullcit/9913695.

Full text
Abstract:
Log breakdown by sawing can be viewed as a multi-phase process that converts logs into boards by a series of cutting operations. In the primary phase, logs are sawn into s labs of wood known as flitches or cants. These are further processed by secondary operations, that resaw, edge (cut lengthwise) and trim (cut widthwise) the raw material, resulting in the manufacture of the board product whose value is influenced by its composite dimensions and quality (as indicated by a grade). Board grade is in turn determined by the number, type, size, and location of defects. Owing to its biological origins, each log, and subsequent board, is unique. Furthermore, as each sawmill, and processing centre within the mill, has a unique configuration, the problem of determining how each log entering a mill should be sawn is very complex. Effective computer simulation of log breakdown processes must therefore entail detailed descriptions of both geometry and quality of individual logs. Appropriate strategies at each breakdown phase are also required. In this thesis models for emulating log breakdown are developed in conjunction with an existing sawing simulation system which requires, as input, detailed three-dimensional descriptions of both internal and external log characteristics. Models based on heuristic and enumerative procedures, and those based upon the principles of dynamic programming (DP) are formulated, encoded, and compared. Log breakdown phases are considered both independently and in a combined integrated approach-working backwards from the board product through to the primary log breakdown phase. This approach permits methodology developed for the later processes to be embedded within the primary phase thus permitting the determination of a global rather than local solution to the log breakdown problem whose objective is to seek the highest possible solution quality within the minimum possible time. Simulation results indicate that solution quality and processing speeds are influenced by both solution methodology and degree of data complexity. When the structure of either factor is simplified, solutions are generated more rapidly-but with an accompanying reduction in solution quality. A promising compromise that combines DP techniques with mathematical functions based on a subset of the original data is presented.<br>Subscription resource available via Digital Dissertations only.
