Abstract:
Cross dressing is about deliberately traversing meaningful boundaries. The cultural critic, Marjorie Garber, argues that Western civilization has long been obsessed with transvestite behavior. Garber's wide-ranging analysis (from Shakespeare to Madonna) stresses the disruptive aspect of the phenomenon, which, she claims, precipitates a “category crisis” by exposing the futility of all binary oppositions, including those of gender. Could cross dressing ever have been a commonplace part of the notoriously cautious bourgeois culture of nineteenth-century France? The very idea seems implausible on the surface, but in fact the mainstream stage presented the opportunity to see an enormous amount of transvestite performance (travesti). It consisted not simply of plays within which characters disguise themselves as the other sex. In hundreds of French plays before and after the Revolution, actresses assumed male roles, and, to a more limited extent, actors took female parts. Playwrights and producers, more concerned with fame and success than with social commentary, turned out a stream of such transvestite spectacles.

As a kind of complicated mechanical automation, most of key parts of breech mechanism are cams delivering forces and movements by parts’ outline and figure. The major fault mode of breech mechanism is grain abrasion caused by dry sliding friction. There are no feasible and practical technologies to simulate and predict the abrasion failure lives of key parts for breech mechanism. A new simulation and prediction method is firstly put forward in this paper. Based on Pro/E and ADAMS, the virtual prototype of breech mechanism of semiautomatic vertical sliding-wedge type is established. Key parts’ load spectrum can be obtained based on virtual prototype. Pin-on-disc friction and abrasion testing machine is designed and adopted to obtain typical materials’ abrasion rules. Finial simulation and prediction results are given as abrasion thresholds and operating items, which provide sufficient references for breech mechanism’s design and safeguard.

Abstract:
The breech mechanism is a very important part of artillery with a high failure rate. It is planned to build a test-platform for the investigation of the breech mechanism. By this test-platform the motion of the breech, while the artillery is shooting, can be simulated as the same. While the artillery is shooting, the energy for the opening and shutting action of the breechblock comes from the impact between the breechblock operating cam and crank, when the breech is returning. But this action of a hugely heavy thing is very difficult to simulate. So the negative direction action is considered, which makes the breechblock operating cam moved to impact the crank. In this paper the virtual prototype model based on ADAMS is used to measure the load etc. of the key-parts of the breech mechanism by simulation experimentations.

The work presents the peculiarities of the activity of the beech martens of «Kachaghakaberd» National Park in the territories of Martakert, Askeran, Shahumyan and Kashatagh regions of Artsakh in 2002-2020. The observations carried out by us showed that there are no marked deviations within the area. However, deviations are recorded at different times of the day and in different seasons of the year. Studies show that the breech martens are mostly active during dusk and night; however they may also be active during the mornings and throughout the day. Higher activity is observed during daylight hours in spring, which is due to the spring mating of animals and in winter, which, in our opinion, is due to the compensation of low activity because of the night frosts. Changes in the nature of the activity of these beasts are conditioned by large predators, climatic and anthropogenic factors. As a result of the observations we found out that in summer at the temperature of +33 - +35°C and in winter at the temperature of -15 - -22°C their activity is lost. In summer they are more frequently encountered when the temperature is +23 - +25°C, meanwhile in winter, they are encountered if the temperature is not below -8 - -13°C. One of the factors affecting the activity of Breech martens is the stress, resulted from the economic activities, that sometimes causes extinction. This paper is concerned with an analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the high performance launcher—rarefaction wave gun(RAVEN) by numerical simulation. Based on its launch mechanism and launch structure, a rigid-flexible coupling dynamic model which considered the coupling effect between the flexible virbation of the launch barrel and the motion behaviors of the other parts of the RAVEN is established via a subsystems method. The actual motion of the projectile and inertial breech during the lauching are described by the interior ballistic equations of the RAVEN. The dynamic characterisitcs of RAVEN is illustrated by the numerical simulation about a small caliber launcher, and the interaction between launch barrel and the other parts is also studied.

Abstract:
Flame lily (Gloriosa superba L.) contains colchicine and gloriosin in almost all parts of the plant, especially in tubers and seeds. Colchicine is often used in biological and breeding studies to induce mutations that result in polyploid plants. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of flame lily tuber extract as a natural mutagen for the development of superior kepok banana cultivars through the in vitro assembly of polyploid kapok bananas. The study was arranged completely randomly with two factors. Factor 1 consisted of 3 levels, namely fresh extract of breech flower tubers (10 %), pure colchicine solution (0.1%) as a positive control, and without being added (0%) as a negative control. Factor 2 consists of 3 levels, namely Kepok Abu, Kepok Batu and Kepok Kuning. All treatment combinations were repeated 5 times. The data were analyzed by Diversity Test (Sidik Ragam) and if there is a difference, it will be continued with the DMRT test at a level of 5%. The results showed that the administration of colchicine in culture media could induce the emergence of polyploid banana plantlets when viewed from the addition of the size of the number of shoots, shoot length, number of roots, root length, leaf area, epidermal cells, stomata, and decreased stomata index. Meanwhile, 10% breech flower tuber extract was not able to induce the emergence of polyploid plantlets. Kepok Kuning bananas had a better response to mutagens than Kepok Abu and Kepok Batu. From these results, it can be concluded that 0.1% colchicine was able to induce polyploid banana plantlets and 10% breech flower tuber extract was not able to induce polyploid plantlets.

Abstract:
Thesis (MDram)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The appearance of actresses on stage during the seventeenth century gave rise to the discarding of gender boundaries and the exploration of male characters. By investigating the cause and effect and the critical value of actresses assuming breeches parts (“broekrolle”) within specific historical time lines and theatrical traditions, and a comparative study of the creation and portrayal of breeches parts within a South African context, I will endeavour to assess the success of the assumption of male characters on the stage. Actresses performing breeches parts were not necessarily in competition with their male counterparts, but were often influenced by their socio-economic situations, as well as their natural inclination to male identities. The appearance or beauty of the female performer has almost always been a defining factor in the casting of a part and it is therefore possible that some actresses chose to perform breeches parts because their natural attributes might not have fallen within the general concept of beauty. Although the assumption of male characters was often categorized as sensation seeking and selfglorification, it was accepted during certain historical periods and the theatrical traditions of the time. Breeches parts contributed towards the actress’s level of skills, and thus to their financial gain. Within a South African context a comparative and personal perception will be investigated in relation to the experiences of the above-mentioned actresses. Because of the hybrid quality of the character of Ella/Max Gericke in As die Broek Pas (Man to Man), in other words, the duality of her performed identity, the breeches part of Ella/Max differs from the traditional concept of breeches performances. This aspect contributes to the process of self-assessment through performance as research – situated knowledge.

This task assesses the following clinical skills: … ● Patient safety ● Communication with patients and their relatives ● Information gathering ● Applied clinical knowledge … Rebecca Francis is a 34- year- old lady in her second pregnancy. She has had a normal vaginal delivery two years ago. Her pregnancy remained uneventful so far. At 36 weeks, her midwife detected that the baby was in breech presentation and has referred her to the antenatal clinic to discuss further management. You will then be given some information and asked questions by the examiner. You have 10 minutes for this task (+ 2mins initial reading time). Please read instruction to candidate and actor. After the consultation with the actor patient (or in the last two minutes), tell the candidate that Rebecca underwent an unsuccessful ECV and was booked for an elective caesarean at 39 weeks. You performed her caesarean and to your surprise, you delivered a cephalic baby by caesarean section. What should you have done to prevent this? What will you do next to prevent this kind of incidence? What will you explain to Rebecca? Record your overall clinical impression of the candidate for each domain (i.e. should this performance be pass, borderline, or a fail). You are Rebecca Francis, a 34- year- old mother of two- year- old Lucy. You had a straight forward pregnancy and delivery with Lucy. You are currently 36 weeks pregnant. You were seen by your midwife yesterday for a routine check and she found the baby to be in breech position. You were sent to the antenatal clinic and have had a scan confirming that the baby is in breech position. You were told that rest of the scan, including the baby’s measurements, fluid volume around the baby and the position of the placenta are normal. You are healthy. You do not smoke and have had no alcohol in pregnancy. Your pregnancy has progressed without any problems so far. The screening test for the baby showed low risk for Down’s syndrome. Temperament: You think you are mostly a calm, level- headed woman, but you do like to be organised and in control of things.

Abstract:
This chapter considers how the joke about breeches fitted into a way of thinking about human association that set decorum alongside justice, reciprocity alongside property, distinction alongside equality, fashion alongside price competition, equity alongside legality, honnêteté alongside charity, and “sublime” self-love alongside ordinary human selfishness. More fundamentally, it also fitted into the type of claim about the relationship between the passions and the arts that could be found in the works of Jean-Baptiste Dubos or Voltaire, and of how, in conjunction, they could keep morality alive. For Rousseau, the alternative to “the masterpiece of politics of our century” involved a rather limited array of individual interests and relied heavily on the part played by public opinion in shaping social behaviour. With these in place, self-interest and the common interest would coincide, without requiring any further motivation to be supplied by benevolence or altruism.

You are 36 weeks pregnant. You are healthy and so far your pregnancy had progressed smoothly. You feel good baby movements. The screening test as well as the baby’s scan at 20 weeks has been normal. You have one child, Imogen, born by caesarean section two years ago. It was an elective caesarean section as Imogen was in breech position. They did try turning her (ECV), but was unsuccessful. You were very much looking forward to a normal delivery and were disappointed that you needed a caesarean section. The caesarean section was straightforward, without any complications. But you needed a few days to recover at home. You are keen to have a normal delivery this time, but want to know the options and risks of the mode of delivery. Both you and your husband have always wanted a large family, so want to know the implications of a second section. If the candidate does not mention VBAC, say that you have heard of this and can they explain more about it.

Your task is: … ● To take a focussed history ● Organize the necessary investigations ● Discuss the results and diagnosis with Jaz ● Agree a management plan … You have 10 minutes for this task (+ 2mins initial reading time). This is a communication skills clinical assessment task that tests the candidate’s skills to take a focussed history, interpret and explain results and agree to a management plan having discussed the options. If they ask for the urine pregnancy test, tell them it is positive. If they arrange an ultrasound, provide them with the following result. ‘An empty uterus and a 2.3cm left sided adnexal mass with well- defined gestational sac medial to the left ovary with minimal fluid in pouch of Douglas. Right ovary appeared normal. Findings are highly suggestive of left sided tubal pregnancy’. If they organize beta HCG, tell them the nurse had sent it and the result is back and it is 2900IU/ml. Record your overall clinical impression of the candidate for each domain (e.g. should this performance be pass, borderline, or a fail). You are Ms. Jaz Pringle, a 24- year- old housewife who lives with her partner of four years. You have one child delivered by caesarean section for breech (bottom first) presentation three years ago. You had developed infection post caesarean section and were very unwell. You had needed admission to the hospital for 10 days and needed IV antibiotics. This was followed by an ectopic pregnancy 18 months ago whereby you ended up having key hole surgery and removal of your right fallopian tube with ectopic pregnancy. While you have not been actively trying for another pregnancy, you and your partner are happy with the thought of another pregnancy. However, you attended hospital due to some discomfort on the left side of the tummy and some vaginal bleeding on and off for two days. You are otherwise fit and well with no allergies. The candidate should arrange a urine pregnancy test, which will be positive. They should then organize a scan in the EPAU. The scan will suggest an ectopic pregnancy in your right tube. You are now extremely upset and anxious after the scan at the thought of possibly losing the only remaining tube and being rendered infertile. You want to know all possible options and would like to save the only fallopian tube if possible.

Abstract:
High pressure screw plug (also called breech lock) exchangers are arguably the most complicated bolted connection in a refinery. After traveling around the world helping facilities turn these exchangers from chronic leakers (from internal tubesheet and external diaphragm and B style shell leaks) to one of the most reliable heat exchangers in the plant, it is very clear to me that manufacturers, engineers and mechanics struggle to correctly understand the interactions between gaskets, internal pressure, the two circles of external push bolts that are part of A style exchangers and all the internal parts. Some manufactuers have given up on trying to make these connections operate leak free, and prefer to weld in the tubesheets and diaphragms. This significantly adds to the cost and time needed to open and close these exchangers, as special equipment is needed to machine out the parts and weld them back together again. There are a handful of equipment manufacturers that build these exchangers, and while there are differences from one manufacturer to the next, once the basic design is understood, the reader should be able understand that they are all basically the same when it comes to the few critical steps that must be followed when opening and closing these exchangers. In order to obtain reliable leak free performance, all the basic sealing tools must be employed, including: 1. A spreadsheet that will easily analyze the critical variables; 2. Correct gasket selection; 3. Correct assembly procedures that focus on important steps including proper spacing of internal parts and obtaining consistent thread friction; 4. And finally hot torqueing the exchangers after startup. The goal of this paper to provide the end-user with a good understanding for how parts interact and how the bolted connections function, so that they might also achieve reliable, leak free performance. This paper will explain: 1. How the connections work; 2. Common misunderstanding about screw plug exchangers; 3. Pressure Testing Screw Plug Exchangers; 4. Analyzing the design and calculating the important variables; 5. The key assembly steps that must be included in all assembly procedures; 6. Important design considerations when building new exchangers.

Abstract:
Threaded closures for pressure vessels have been in use for decades. Much work has been done to develop convenient, safe and economical threaded closures. Threaded closures are used when there is a need for opening the vessel either for maintenance or as part of its operation. Heat Exchangers are a typical application where there is a need for opening the vessel and cleaning the tubes at regular intervals to maintain the heat transfer efficiency. These are known as Breech Lock or Screw Plug Exchangers. These are basically U-tube exchangers. The channel side operates at high temperature and pressure and it has a threaded end closure. In some designs, the shell side may also be at high pressure. The tube bundle is removable without having to dismantle the channel or disconnect the nozzles from the pipeline. Thus screw plug exchangers help to reduce fabrication cost and reduce time for in-service maintenance. The major problem encountered with the use of such end closures are 1) Jamming of the threaded plug, due to deformation of the channel barrel. Thus the opening of the end closure by unscrewing becomes a difficult task. With the increase in operating temperatures and pressures, the problems become more severe, due to which, users are not inclined to use these type of end closures. A study was undertaken to assess the reasons for bulging of the end of the channel which caused jamming of the screw threads and also for leakage through the gasket. By shrink fitting a ring over the end of the channel, the deformation was reduced, enabling easy opening of the cover. 2) The leakage through the gasket between the shell and tubesheet, causing the intermixing of shell and tube-side fluids. This on analysing was found that the additional forces were acting on the gasket due to thermal expansion of the internals. This led to changing to a gasket that could withstand the forces and pressure. Leakage through the gasket was prevented by analysing the additional forces acting on the gasket due to thermal expansion of the internals and changing to a gasket that could withstand the forces and pressure.

Abstract:
American Exchanger Services, Inc (AM-EX) performed a 2012 repair of a vertical head-up High Pressure (HP) Feedwater Heater breech lock channel during a shop based re-tube for the American Electric Power (AEP) Wilkes Power Plant, Unit 1. The 48 year old channel is a carbon steel cup-forging that had 1-1/2″ deep circumferential cracks extending radially into the tight knuckle radius at the channel barrel to tubesheet junction. A small area was also found on the backside of the tubesheet which had corroded to a depth of 7/16″. Several methods to repair these types of failures may be employed, such as grinding out the crack and weld repair, grinding or machining out the crack, leaving as is and performing regular inspections and monitoring crack propagation, or leave as is and perform a fitness for service analysis (API 579-1/ASME FFS-1). A repair was chosen that reduced the stresses in the highly stressed corner radius and was validated using modern calculations. The channel barrel was in the re-tube process so immediate access to a vertical lathe was available and this, in part, lead to the crack removal approach. The design alteration was to machine a pocket to completely remove the crack, verify tubesheet stresses are within allowable stress limits by Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and prescribe future Nondestructive Examination (NDE) to monitor potential future cracking. The size of the machined “pocket” was determined by the actual crack length “as measured” and the repair was verified using FEA. The machined pocket was Dye Penetrant Tested (PT) in September of 2013 (after approximately one year of returning to service), and no defects were noted. This is not a new repair method; in fact it was researched by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in 1988 symposium [1], and based on an EPRI 1985 [2] similar repair. In the 1985 repair similar methods of FEA were employed, however using less sophisticated forms of the calculation. Modern computing allows for 3D analysis with more complex geometries, and more conservative meshing. This analysis demonstrates that the earlier papers were correct in their understanding of the problem and the proposed solutions. The Wilkes HP feedwater heater was repaired in a similar manner with a machined radius that sufficiently reduced stresses to safe levels allowing an alteration of the vessel to be in compliance with National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) [3] and American Society of Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME B&PV CODE) [4].
