Abstract:
In this Master of Arts Thesis in Anthropology I examine the controversy in the Okanagan Valley over the introduction of GM seed technologies into local agricultural processes. I explore via a multi-sited ethnography how local fruit farmers in this region view GM seed technologies and their perception of how these technologies will impact their farming practices. I argue that (a) the use of GM seeds as currently regulated in Canada threatens to erode farmers' local knowledge of plant breeding and that (b) this erosion is of consequence not only to local farmers but to society generally because

The ecological importance of introduced mammalian predators is well acknowledged in New Zealand, however, little research has focused on the ecology of native avian predators and their role in communities. This study investigated the ecology of moreporks (Ninox novaeseelandiae) on Ponui Island, Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand between August 2007 and April 2008. The primary aim was to investigate the functional response of moreporks to availability of their prey. The contents of regurgitated morepork pellets were compared with relative abundance of prey taxa (invertebrates, small birds and rodents) o

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A thesis undertaken to quantify genotype-by-environment interaction within Eucalyptus grandis clones growing in the eastern portion of South Africa. Thirty one sites were selected to represent the "traditional" E. grandis growing areas of South Africa. Eleven common macro- site variables and twelve common micro- site soil variables were recorded at each site. Twenty seven E. grandis clones and four E. grandis hybrid clones were then evaluated over these 31 sites. An incomplete latin square design was used to evaluate the

Assessment of trophic interactions between increasing populations of New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) and fisheries in southern Australia is limited due to a lack of species specific demographic data and an understanding of the factors influencing population growth. To establish species specific demographic parameters a cross-sectional sample of New Zealand fur seal females (330) and males (100) were caught and individually-marked on Kangaroo Island, South Australia between 2000 and 2003. The seals were aged through examination of a postcanine tooth, which was removed from each a

The aims are to identify characteristic differences of nest sites within the habitats, and to compare nest-site preferences of early- and late-nesting Roseate Terns. Significant interspecific differrences in nesting sites were found: Roseate Terns nested in areas with short vegetat

M. Tech. Agriculture
Mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) is becoming a food security crop in Africa, especially in South Africa where there is a growing Asian population. To promote its production by farmers, 15 elite mungbean varieties were evaluated for plant growth, symbiotic N (nitrogen) nutrition and grain yield at Nelspruit and Kliplaatdrift in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Genotypes VC6486-10-S1 and VC6493-44-1 at Nelspruit, and VC6510-151-1, VC1973A and VC3960-88 at Kliplaatdrift showed better growth and fixed significantly more symbiotic N than the other genotypes.
