The traditions of the healing of deafness associated with the Celtic saints in Brittany and Wales are discussed. Many more have survived in Brittany because of the religious continuity in that country. Three Saints Cadoc (of Welsh origin), Egarec (of Irish origin) and Meriadec (of Breton origin) are associated with such traditions in a number of different locations.

THE cult of St Eiluned is much more fully documented than the Saint herself, being described in two sources, of the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. These must therefore be the starting-point for an investigation both into the Saint’s historicity, which is at best dubious, and into the significance of the cult, which throws light on religious practices over a very lengthy period. Effluents from the treatment plant of Saint Jean de Monts and Saint Hilaire de Riez have been injected into a confined ground water for twelve years. This ground water is connected with the sea. Effluent floats on the surface of the aquifer and it disperses by dilution at the freshwater/salt water interface. The aquifer acts as a direct overflow pipe. A U–Pb zircon date of 483 ± 1 Ma is recorded from an uppermost Tremadoc K-bentonite from the Chesley Drive Group on McLeod Brook, eastern Cape Breton Island. The associated fauna, with the trilobite Peltocare rotundifrons, is also known from the Reversing Falls section in Saint John, New Brunswick, and the traditional reference of the latter section to the Arenig is incorrect. The distribution patterns of four types of garnet in surficial materials of southeastern Gaspé Peninsula are interpreted in terms of the glacial history of the area, the lithostratigraphy of the bedrock, and mineral occurrences.
