In recent years bioethanol (fuel ethanol derived through fermentation) has become the leading alternative to currently utilised liquid transportation fuels, possessing the benefits of being both sustainable and carbon neutral. If this position is to be maintained, it is clear that the feedstocks and processes used during its production have to be a major focus for the future direction of research, not only within the context of bioethanol but all biofuels in general. In terms of future sustainability, it is important that biofuel production should be derived from waste materials which exhibit

Brewer's spent grain (BSG) is the most abundant by-product of the brewing industry and its main application is limited to low-value cattle feed. Since BSG contains 20 to 25% of proteins, it has the potential to provide a new protein source to the food industry. In this research, an ultrasound-assisted enzymatic extraction was designed to extract protein hydrolysates from BSG. Original BSG and ultrasound pretreated BSG were hydrolyzed under different enzyme (Alcalase) loadings and incubation times. Mestrado em Engenharia Zootécnica - Produção Animal - Instituto Superior de Agronomia
In order to study the effect of brewer’s spent grain in digestibility, consistency of faeces, intestinal fermentations and morphology of the intestinal wall, 32 piglets, weaned at 28 days of age were distributed in 4 blocks of 8 animals and 4 experimental diets were provided: a control diet and three other diets enriched with different fiber sources (wheat bran, unwashed brewer spent grain and washed brewer spent grain). To study the effect of brewer spent grain, the control diet was used as the negat

Abstract:
Tese de Doutoramento em Bioengenharia
The demand of prebiotic ingredients, such as xylooligosaccharides (XOS), has been growing over the years as consumers pay more attention to their health and well-being. XOS are considered emergent and competitively priced prebiotics, presenting high potential as food ingredients. As a result, the industry is focused on developing new approaches to improve production efficiency that can meet the increasing demand while reducing costs. Motivated by the industry needs, the main purpose of this thesis was to develop an integrated bioprocess, based on o
