Abstract:
The author examines the structure of the Internet governance system, identifies its main contradictions and reform scenarios. The main problem is the lack of real leverage of the BRICS member countries - leaders of digital development - to influence the decisions made in the field of Internet governance. BRICS has made many decisions on the development of digital infrastructure. Deepening cooperation on information security is the promising area. The author proposes ways to resolve the discovered systemic contradictions, in particular, suggests wider involvement of developing countries in the decision making on Internet governance within the BRICS platform. The participation of developing countries will ensure the legitimacy of the decisions made within the BRICS. For students, teachers and all those interested in Internet governance issues.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the distinct mix of motives within each country’s foreign policy goals that has impelled cooperation among the five BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). For China, the BRICS club allows it to express its leaders’ aversion to Western high-handedness and policy demands while exerting leadership in a less-threatening fashion. Russia prioritizes resistance to financial sanctions and Western dominance while aiming to translate the BRICS’ cooperation into greater regional and global influence. India hopes to amplify its voice in global governance and to expand choices of international partners through the BRICS. Brazil’s left-leaning governments hope to emphasize South-South diplomacy to please their domestic political supporters. In South Africa, China’s expected support and investment for Africa’s growth tops the list. The non-China BRICS all see China as the most important member of the group, and tying China to their economic and club interests has been a critical element of the BRICS’ collective financial statecraft.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines four ideal types of collective financial statecraft of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) in four case studies occurring between 2007 and mid-2016. The first type is inside reforms of existing institutions, illustrated by the BRICS’ attempt to gain greater influence within the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. A second type is inside reforms of markets, defined as resisting or reallocating the political power accruing to states that possess currency and financial market power. The associated case profiles the BRICS’ opposition to sanctions against Russia over its intervention in Ukraine. A third type of BRICS collective action occurs via the outside option to create new parallel institutions such as the New Development Bank (NDB) and Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA). Finally, a fourth type combines the choice of an outside option with a market-based venue. The chapter examines BRICS support of greater internationalization of China’s currency, rivaling the U.S. dollar and thus altering international financial markets. The BRICS have cooperated successfully in most of their attempts.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the current as well as the potential degree of cooperation among the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) economies. It shows that the increasing degree of economic interdependency among these economies is not a result of cooperative measures implemented by this group of nations. Moreover, the chapter suggests that the potential degree of cooperation among the BRICs is limited due to the presence of several economic asymmetries among these countries. The chapter concludes that the Brazilian diplomatic efforts to use the BRICs as a platform to pursue the national interests of Brazil has not yet generated concrete results.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the group of BRICS, China, Russia, and South Africa use conduct remedies more often than developed jurisdictions. Remedies are applied under merger approval or as an outcome of investigation of anticompetitive conducts. Effects of conduct remedies on companies’ decisions and market performance still need explanation. This chapter explains the use of conduct remedies, with special emphasis on Russia, by the specific position of BRICS in international division of labor, which allows the large companies, and first of all domestic ones, to discriminate customers in BRICS home markets, vis-à-vis international customers. Together with positive effects on domestic customers, competition economics predicts the possibility of negative effects of remedies on the managerial decisions within the target company. Under some circumstances, remedies may even weaken competition in the global product markets.
