Nasr, Jonathan A. "Development of a Design Guideline for Bridge Pile Foundations Subjected to Liquefaction Induced Lateral Spreading." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4160.

Full text
Abstract:
Effective-stress nonlinear dynamic analyses (NDA) were performed for piles in liquefiable sloped ground to assess how inertia and liquefaction-induced lateral spreading combine in long-duration vs. short-duration earthquakes. A parametric study was performed using input motions from subduction and crustal earthquakes covering a wide range of earthquake durations. The NDA results were used to evaluate the accuracy of the equivalent static analysis (ESA) recommended by Caltrans/ODOT for estimating pile demands. Finally, the NDA results were used to develop new ESA methods to combine inertial and lateral spreading loads for estimating elastic and inelastic pile demands. The NDA results showed that pile demands increase in liquefied conditions compared to nonliquefied conditions due to the interaction of inertia (from superstructure) and kinematics (from liquefaction-induced lateral spreading). Comparing pile demands estimated from ESA recommended by Caltrans/ODOT with those computed from NDA showed that the guidelines by Caltrans/ODOT (100% kinematic combined with 50% inertia) slightly underestimates demands for subduction earthquakes with long durations. A revised ESA method was developed to extend the application of the Caltrans/ODOT method to subduction earthquakes. The inertia multiplier was back-calculated from the NDA results and new multipliers were proposed: 100% Kinematic + 60% Inertia for crustal earthquakes and 100% Kinematic + 75% Inertia for subduction earthquakes. The proposed ESA compared reasonably well against the NDA results for elastic piles. The revised method also made it possible to estimate demands in piles that performed well in the dynamic analyses but could not be analyzed using Caltrans/ODOT method (i.e. inelastic piles that remained below Fult on the liq pushover curve). However, it was observed that the pile demands became unpredictable for cases where the pile head displacement exceeded the displacement corresponding to the ultimate pushover force in liquefied conditions. Nonlinear dynamic analysis is required for these cases to adequately estimate pile demands.

Davies, Michael Paul. "Predicting axially and laterally loaded pile behaviour using in-situ testing methods." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26689.

Full text
Abstract:
The prediction of axial and lateral pile behaviour is a complex engineering problem. Traditional methods of data collection and subsequent analyses are frequently in error when compared to full-scale, load tests. In-situ testing, using advanced electronic tools, provides a means by which representative field data may be obtained. This study investigates the use of such in-situ data in predicting axially loaded pile capacity and laterally loaded pile load-deflection behaviour. A total of twelve static axial pile capacity methods were evaluated to predict the results obtained from eight full-scale pile load tests on six different piles. These methods, separated into direct and indirect classes, used data obtained from the cone penetration test. Extensive use of commercially available microcomputer software significantly simplified the analyses. In addition, several dynamic pile capacity predictions are presented including results from in-situ dynamic measurements obtained with a pile driving analyzer during pile emplacement. An attempt has been made, with the use of tell-tales, to differentiate the shaft resistance and end-bearing components of the load test results. These results are then compared to the prediction methods investigated. Two methods of predicting lateral load-deflection behaviour using in-situ data have been investigated. One method uses pressuremeter test data and the other, a new method proposed in this study, uses full-displacement flat plate dilatometer test data. These predictions are compared with full-scale lateral load tests on three piles of differing size. In both the axial and lateral load cases, the preferred method(s) of analyses are identified. It is shown that excellent agreement can be obtained for predicting measured pile behaviour using several methods. The limitations of this study are noted, and recommendations for further research are proposed.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Civil Engineering, Department of
Graduate

She, Jairus Lai Yan. "Prediction of P-Y curves from finite element analyses." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26736.

Full text
Abstract:
The prediction of P-Y curves for undrained clay and sand based on the results of finite element analyses is presented in this thesis. A higher-ordered finite element program was used in the analyses. The ability of the program to accurately model the undrained soil condition was verified by comparing predicted load-deflection responses with closed form solutions for the cylindrical cavity expansion problem. Pressuremeter curves were predicted from plane strain axisymmetric finite element analyses. The effect of pressuremeter size on the predicted results was examined. P-Y curves were predicted for plane strain and plane stress conditions. Values for the initial slope and Pun- of the curves were obtained. The curves were normalized for comparison, and simplified methods presented for determining P-Y curves. Finite element predictions for the pressuremeter and laterally loaded pile problems were also compared. Factors were determined from these comparisons to generate P-Y curves from pressuremeter curves.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Civil Engineering, Department of
Graduate

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2007.
Page 109 blank.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 99-108).
A history and theory of cable-stayed bridges in the context of a cultural discourse on civil construction projects' value, this thesis studies the significance of cable-stayed bridge designs to 'value engineering' objectives for major highway bridge projects of the 1970s. This study of preliminary designs and feasibility studies for highway bridges presents the alternate bridge designs versus alternative bridge typologies selected during this period as one instance of American civil engineering culture adapting to major bridge projects the economically measured but industrial approach to choosing, reconfiguring and eliminating construction systems of value engineering. Only as analytical mechanisms of bridge construction that figure as economically competitive in prevailing market conditions do the high-capital and technologically innovative bridge designs of the Luling Bridge (LA, 1978) and the Pasco-Kennewick Bridge (WA, 1977) develop into physical constructions built almost exclusively with federal highway funds. This shift in cable-stayed bridge designs' fate from abandoned projects in the 1960s is discussed as the reflection of structural engineers' engaging in the post-capitalist practices of analytical and then physical systems building, decision analysis, speculation as well as the interdisciplinary cultures from which these concepts stem. Critical studies of preliminary designs and construction industry data circa 1970 reveal cable-stayed bridge type selections to be at once the linchpin to politicization of VE in American highway bridge building by 1979 and the Achilles heel of an American civil engineering culture that sought a renaissance in bridge engineering not a redefinition of its principles through a new method of planning for alternate futures.
by Fallon M. Abstract:
Most of the existing bridges in Montreal have not been designed to resist seismic forces. Although Montreal is not as highly exposed to earthquake hazards as New Zealand, Japan, California, or Vancouver, seismic hazards do exist. Seismic retrofitting has been considered as the most appropriate way to mitigate seismic hazards except for bridges that have a high retrofit cost and rather low importance. As the first step in seismic retrofitting, prioritization of bridges becomes a very important activity.
The goal of this thesis is to upgrade the current Canadian prioritization procedure using the latest information from the performance of bridges during recent earthquakes, as well as results from the latest research projects. The previous procedure used in Canada was developed in 1993, since then many changes have occurred relative to seismic retrofitting philosophy. An analytical procedure has replaced the previous simple numerical scoring procedure for the evaluation of vulnerability, and the evaluation of the importance of a bridge has also changed significantly, especially with the addition of new factors such as the ratio of replacement cost to retrofit cost, structure condition and remaining service life. The proposed procedure incorporates these new features and is applied and compared to eleven other procedures for twenty-four bridges administered by the Montreal Office of Transport Quebec.
