Abstract:
I would like the reader to take away from this book the following morals.First, Brentano was wrong to say that intentionality is the most distinctive mark of mental phenomena (see PES, 75 [I, 137]). Our conception of mental phenomena in not unified by the thesis that all and only mental acts have an object. It cannot be so unified because the notion of direction or of-ness itself is neither unified nor generally applicable to mental phenomena. Even if intentionality is a first-person concept that one can only come to grasp if one can instantiate and introspectively access mental acts, propositional and interrogative attitudes pose insuperable problems for Brentano’s Thesis....

Abstract:
The current chapter examines the relationship between religion/spirituality (R/S) and medicine through the psychological lens of a religious coping framework. This relationship is considered at the theoretical, patient, caregiver, and care team levels. The R/S beliefs, practices, and coping strategies of patients, informal caregivers, and health care providers in the context of illness is then discussed. A large body of research demonstrates the important role of R/S in how patients and caregivers understand and cope with illness. Similarly, many health care providers view illness and their clinical care through a R/S lens and believe that attending to patients’ spiritual needs is part of their professional role. The chapter concludes with a brief review of psycho-spiritual interventions in medical populations.

Abstract:
A crisis occurs when a life stressor overwhelms a person’s ability to cope with a problematic life situation. Crises often become evident in the primary care setting. People in crisis feel distressed and alone; they experience a psychological disorganization that affects their mood and functioning. Most patients can benefit from a brief crisis intervention treatment delivered in an integrated care environment. Behavioral health specialists can lead crisis intervention therapy with the support of the primary care provider, nurses, staff, and a consulting psychiatrist. Crisis intervention treatment includes identifying the life stressor, understanding the patient’s response to stress, assessing the patient’s social system, listing possible solutions to the crisis, and working to implement those solutions. As the crisis resolves, the integrated team provides anticipatory guidance for the patient and primary provider.

Iliopoulos, John. A Brief History of Cosmology. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198805175.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
We present the evolution of our ideas concerning the history of the Cosmos. They are based on Einstein’s theory of General Relativity in which E.P. Hubble and G. Lemaître brought two fundamental new concepts: the expansion of the Universe and the model of the Big Bang. They form the basic elements of the modern theory of Cosmology. We present very briefly the observational evidence which corroborates this picture based on a vast amount of data, among which the most recent ones come from the Planck mission with a detailed measurement of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. We show that during its evolution the Universe went through several phase transitions giving rise to the formation of particles, atoms, nuclei, etc. A particular phase transition, which occurred very early in the cosmic history, around 10–12 seconds after the Big Bang, is the Brout–Englert–Higgs (BEH) transition during which a fraction of the energy was transformed into mass, thus making it possible for most elementary particles to become massive.

Maloney, Michael P., Joel Dvoskin, and Jeffrey L. Metzner. Mental health screening and brief assessments. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199360574.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Screening and assessment are a core component of psychiatric care in any setting. In jails and prisons, the process, structure, content and timing of screenings and assessments are vital parts of the healthcare system. While the number of incarcerated persons is clear, the actual number of incarcerated prisoners who suffer from a mental disorder or independent psychiatric symptoms is difficult to determine because of methodological issues (e.g., different definitions of mental illness, different thresholds of severity, etc.) as well as wide variation in the nature (e.g. prison, jail, police lockup), size, and mental health service delivery systems of various settings. However, despite differences in methodology, geographic area, and other issues (e.g., types of facility, when studies were conducted, etc.), virtually every relevant study has concluded that a significant number of prisoners have serious mental illnesses and that the numbers of mentally ill prisoners are increasing. Because people with mental illnesses are at risk of suicide and exacerbations of their mental illnesses, correctional institutions need to identify such persons in a timely manner and provide appropriate clinical interventions. This chapter addresses the initial mental health screening of persons entering prisons and jails, with a special emphasis on suicide risk screening and follow-up clinical assessments of prisoners whose receiving or intake screening results suggest the likelihood that treatment or suicide prevention efforts will be necessary.

Full text
Abstract:
The reign of Henry VIII represented a transitional phase in the religious history of England. Despite a brief flirtation with Protestantism in the 1530s, the regime never adopted a full-throated Reformation, and by the end of the reign English Christians were still required to accept nearly all the doctrines and customs that had prevailed in 1509. On the other hand, the break with Rome, the effective rejection of the doctrine of Purgatory, and the severe pruning of the cult of the saints represented a clear discontinuity with the past. Above all, the regime’s decision to legalize the English Bible for the first time in 130 years, and to require every parish church to obtain a copy, influenced the direction of English Christianity, and of English literature, for decades to come.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter offers several ways to think about how music appeared in Porter's social world. The term “musicking,” coined by musicologist Christopher Small to incorporate all musical performance acts, from composing to playing to listening to dancing, under a single rubric, is an excellent label for Porter, whose personal performances were as central to his life as his songwriting. He was a consummate musicker: his passion for music was always socially embedded to a degree that complicated any straightforward decontextualization. And in this respect, he was united with many of his friends and allies. This becomes clear from a brief account of his earlier career.

Full text
Abstract:
The core executive is a new concept replacing the conventional debate about the power of the prime minister and the Cabinet. It refers to all those organizations and procedures that coordinate central government policies, and act as final arbiters of conflict between different parts of the government machine. In brief, the ‘core executive’ is the heart of the machine. The chapter reviews the several approaches to studying the British executive: prime ministerial government; prime ministerial cliques; Cabinet government; ministerial government; segmented decision-making; and bureaucratic coordination. It then discusses several ways forward by developing new theory and methods. The Afterword discusses the core executive as interlocking networks, and the fluctuating patterns of executive politics.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides a brief introduction to the topic of affective determinants of health behavior. In doing so it analyzes each aspect of the book’s topic. It begins by outlining what is meant by “health behavior.” It then considers traditional views of the key determinants of such behaviors and the value of and need for integrating affective determinants within health behavior theories. Next, it offers a conceptualization of affective determinants in relation to health behaviors, including distinctions between/among (1) affect proper versus affect processing (the latter also known as affective judgments or cognitively mediated affect); (2) core affect versus moods and emotions; (3) integral versus incidental affect; and (4) anticipated affect, affective attitudes, implicit attitudes, and affective associations. It closes with a brief overview of measurement of affect in the context of health behavior research.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a brief overview of empirically supported psychosocial treatments for adults who have developed serious clinical psychiatric disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other psychosocial and behavioral problems as a result of exposure to interpersonal victimization and violence. In this chapter, we will describe important aspects of creating a safe and therapeutic environment for victims of interpersonal violence and the evidence-based core treatment components and strategies for use with adult victims of interpersonal violence with PTSD. Finally, we will introduce three empirically supported treatment programs incorporating some or all of the core treatment components discussed. We will also discuss emerging and novel interventions for the treatment of PTSD in adults that have varying levels of theoretical and empirical evidence.
