Abstract:

Tagebücher in Briefen scheinen eher selten zu sein; demgegenüber gibt es Beispiele für Briefe, die hinterher zusammengefaßt eine Tagebuchfunktion erfüllten, wie etwa bei der Potsdamer Porträtmalerin Anna Bernhardi.1 Und literarische Darstellungen in Briefform, so etwa Briefromane, kommen öfter vor. Im vorliegenden Fall wurden die beabsichtigten Briefe durch Fortschreiben der Berichte gewissermaßen in ein Tagebuch verwandelt – nach der deutschen Kapitulation im Mai 1945 gab es keinen Postverkehr mit dem Ausland, und so blieb es denn beim Tagebuch. Ob und wann die Berichte an ihre Empfängerin, Klinckowstroems Cousine in Schweden, geschickt wurden, ist nicht bekannt.

Abstract:

This article is an attempt to indicate the genre of two collections of the apocryphal letters – The letters of Xenophon (we only have 7 excerpts preserved in the Anthology by Stobaeus) and The letters of Socrates and the Socratics. The term griechische Briefroman proposed by N. Holzberg to describe the genre of pseudonymous collections of letters in most cases proved to be too wide and inadequate. P.A. Rosenmeyer found the term novella more appropriate here. So, what literary characteristics, inherent in a novel or a novella or a short story, are dominant in Xenophontis epistolae and Socrates et socraticorum epistolae?

Abstract:

AbstractIn the present article and in a theoretical frame based in cognitive linguistics, we will justify and analyse some of the translational processes that have taken place during the translation of the novel “La Tesis de Nancy” (1962). The human being constantly perceives a multitude of impressions which operate as mental impulses and which activate parts of the long-term memory to facilitate the understanding of new information. Apart from the development of mental spaces, the metaphorical thinking plays an important role in the creation of meaning and in the understanding of reality. A professional translator has to consider that an awareness of such processes can be an inspirational source for a creative and functional translation.

Abstract:

AbstractWith regard to the historical »quarrel« between rhetoric and poetic concepts, this essay, firstly, reports the linguistic, literary and social innovations in letter-writing during the 18th-century. The letter writer’s fictitious role-play between the addressee and himself leads to a detailed description of body language as to further emotionalizing strategies. Thus, literary concepts linked to the letter are in demand which bring the epistolary novel into play. In a comparison of Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther (1787) and Ugo Foscolo’s Last Letters of Jacopo Ortis (1817) it will be shown that the staged conversation between letter writer and addressee and the represented conversation between the letter writer and another character follow the same conversational attitude for each novel: either the principle of sympathy or the principle of divergence. This can be partly explained by a different historical development of aesthetic concepts in Germany and Italy. Besides, the different way of communicating emotions can be also attributed to the epistemic presuppositions: a mimesis which refers to naturalness is in opposition with an autonomous mimesis that breaks with the former tradition.
