Abstract:
Fortuny (1983) by Pere Gimferrer is the only novel (at least to date) that the author has written in Catalan and it represents one of the most unique novels of contemporary Hispanic narrative. The aims of the present study are mainly two: to shed light on one of the most important, but least studied, works by Pere Gimferrer, the greatest representative of Hispanic creativity for the Post-War Generation, and to analyse critical reception of the work and show how the novel has evolved from the time of publication in 1983 until today. This essay consists of three major parts: the study of critical reception, the narratological analysis of the text and the unveiling of the textual, but above all visual, references that make up the novel. The latter allows us to explain two essential elements of the novel: the imaginary Fortuny on the one hand and, on the other, the novel’s intertextual concrete figure of speech, its ekphrasis. The study of this intentionally visual character of the novel not only wanted to highlight the importance of two arts to which Gimferrer has always paid special attention – we refer to cinema and painting – but has also demonstrated the desire of the writer to innovate the Catalan narrative scene, using different literary devices to push the limits of the genre novel.

Abstract:
The authors use meta-ethnography to learn how dissertation researchers have used Black racial identity theory (BRIT) to qualitatively study race and Black racial identity. BRIT has gained increasing currency since the early formulations of the 1970s—nigrescence theory in particular—but mainly in branches of psychology, education, and organizational change. As BRIT has developed, however, researchers have emphasized quantitative analysis of Black racial identity. The authors examine 13 dissertations to meta-ethnographically explore how researchers conduct qualitative studies of Black racial identity that engage BRIT and to determine what researchers learned as a result. An important value of the qualitative approach is how it allows experience-near and context-specific analysis of Black racial identity to address how racial identity intersects with other identifications.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on DART, a Bus Rapid Transit project (BRT): the new face of public transport in Dar es Salaam since operations started in 2016. A PPP funded by the World Bank, DART aimed to transform public transport through large-scale infrastructural work and the introduction of new buses, phasing out daladala from the city’s main public transport routes. The chapter challenges the presentation of BRT as the ‘win–win’ solution to tackling the crisis of public transport in developing countries. A contextualized political economy of DART highlights why the project proceeded so slowly (implementation began in 2002), documenting the capacity of some Tanzanian actors to resist. Tensions over the displacement of existing paratransit operators by foreign investors, the inclusion of the existing public transport workforce, employment destruction, affordability of the new service, and their management by the government are a window into ‘actually existing neoliberalism’ and post-socialism in Tanzania.

Abstract:
This conclusion considers one particular aspect of Gregory Benford's science fiction, an open process of creation, which means not only his interest in collaborating with other writers, but in actually writing sequels to their work, in which he continues a story they started, and in the manner of a creative dialogue, blends his vision skillfully with theirs. One notable example is Beyond the Fall of Night (1990), a rewrite of Arthur C. Clarke's Against the Fall of Night (1953). Writing this novel seems to have spurred Benford, in turn, to write a sequel to his own sequel, the novel Beyond Infinity (2004). This chapter looks at Benford's collaborations with authors such as Gordon Eklund, William Rotsler, and David Brin, as well as his participation in the project known as the Second Foundation Trilogy, a series of novels that proposed to fill in gaps in Isaac Asimov's original Foundation cycle.

Scott, Virginia. Google. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400658495.

Full text
Abstract:
It's the American dream—start a company, make a fortune, and retire early. But to become multimillionaires in their twenties, as Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin did, boggles the mind. All they did, after all, is come up with a better way to search for things on the Internet, right? Only in part. No company achieves a market value in the range of $172 billion (in early 2008) based on a single good idea. This new entry in the Corporations That Changed the World series shows how Google exploited the rage for click through ads, instant news, mapping and satellite imagery, email, and more to create a high-tech behemoth that has done nothing less than change the way we work and live. Chapters in the book: • Explain the importance of the company and the essential disruptions it introduced that changed business forever. -Detail Google's origins and brief history • Present biographies of the founders and the historical context in which they launched the company. -Explain Google's strategies and innovations • Show how Google's treatment of employees—food for free, concierge services, laundry facilities, and more—set the bar high for any company eager to attract the best and brightest • Assess Google's impact on society, technology, processes, methods, etc. (Huge, considering that the company's name has become a verb in the English language!) • Show how Google beat Yahoo and other companies working hard to create a roadmap of the Internet. -Detail financial results over the years • Predict Google's future prospects and successes. In addition, author Virginia Scott offers special features that include a look at the colorful people associated with Google, interesting trivia, ethical issues and controversies, a focus on products, what its detractors have to say, and a look at where the company is headed. Google—a company that changed, and is changing, the world.

Savidge, Jane. Pulp's This Is Hardcore. Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798765106983.

Full text
Abstract:
This Is Hardcore is Pulp’s cry for help. A giant, sprawling, flawed masterpiece of a record, the 1998 album manages to tackle some of the most inappropriately grown-up issues of the day – fame, ageing, mortality, drugs, and pornography – and still come out crying and laughing on the other side. The subject of pornography dominates the record – from its controversial artwork to the images conjured up by songs like “Seductive Barry” and the title track – after Pulp’s main man, Jarvis Cocker – who’d spent most of his teenage and adult life chasing celebrity, only to be cruelly disappointed when it finally arrived in spades – hit upon the grand notion of using pornography as a metaphor for fame. The album’s commercial failure as a follow-up to the band’s Britpop-defining, Different Class, also symbolizes a death knell for Britpop itself. Dark, right? Except just like Pulp themselves, Jane Savidge’s book is playful and sometimes very funny indeed. Kicking off with an imaginary conversation between Jarvis Cocker and the people who run the Total Fame Solutions helpline, Savidge expertly guides us through the trials and tribulations of an album that begins with the so-called Michael Jackson Incident, when Cocker got up on stage at the 1996 Brit Awards and waggled his fully-clothed bum at the King of Pop. Pulp’s This Is Hardcore may be a sleazy run through porn and mental demise, and an album that chronicles Cocker’s continuing disillusionment with his newfound lot in life, but Savidge’s book assesses the cultural and historical context of the album with insider knowledge and a sharp modern lens, ultimately making a case for it as one of the most important albums of the 1990s.

Pang, Zhongying. China and the Struggle over the Future of International Order. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198828945.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses China’s changing attitude, doctrine, and policy actions towards international order and offers some tentative findings on the complexity of China’s role in the struggle over the future of international order. This complexity results from China’s efforts simultaneously to consolidate its presence in the existing international order but also to reform existing global governance institutions. The ambition to seek an alternative international order makes it, at least to some extent, a revisionist state. While pursuing an agenda to reform the existing international order from within, China additionally has begun to sponsor an unprecedented number of new international institutions and initiatives of its own, such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). How this will play out will depend above all on the interaction of China with a USA still wedded to its hegemonic role in world politics.

Miller, Donald C. Coming of Age in Popular Culture. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400628887.

Full text
Abstract:
Documenting the evolution of teens and media from the 1950s through 2010, this book examines the films, books, television shows, and musical artists that impacted American culture and shaped the "coming of age" experience for each generation. The teenage years are fraught with drama and emotional ups and downs, coinciding with bewildering new social situations and sexual tension. For these reasons, pop culture and media have repeatedly created entertainment that depicts, celebrates, or lampoons coming of age experiences, through sitcoms like The Wonder Years to the brat pack films of the 1980s to the teen-centered television series of today. Coming of Age in Popular Culture: Teenagers, Adolescence, and the Art of Growing Up covers a breadth of media presentations of the transition from childhood to adulthood from the 1950s to the year 2010. It explores the ways that adolescence is characterized in pop culture by drawing on these representations, shows how powerful media and entertainment are in establishing societal norms, and considers how American society views and values adolescence. Topics addressed include race relations, gender roles, religion, and sexual identity. Young adult readers will come away with a heightened sense of media literacy through the examination of a topic that inherently interests them.
