Bell, Mark W. "The transformation of the encyclopedia : a textual analysis and comparison of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Wikipedia." Virtual Press, 2007. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1365173.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the following research question: Are there grammatical textual differences between Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia? Specifically, this study will focus on the articles for "Communism" and "Dwight D. Eisenhower" that appear in the online version of Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia. Using a grammatical textual analysis, the study finds there is little difference grammatically between Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia though they are very different types of systems. There are several different types of textual or contextual methods that could expand on this initial approach to find differences between Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia.<br>Department of Telecommunications

Abstract:
The social work in child protection is often characterized by a disabling and authority based work; as a matter of fact the professionals use to centralize the power in their hands, in the name of their expertise, cutting the family out of the decisions regarding their lives . This is not the right way to work to build the parents and children welfare because, if the aim is to promote a real change in families, it is necessary the involvement of the family itself in the decision making process. A family group conference (FGC) is a decision making and planning process whereby the wider family group makes plans and decision for children and young people who have been identified either by the family themselves or by service providers as being in need of s plans that will safeguard and promote their welfare It is possible to define FGC as relational service because it is based on participatory approach in which social service work together with parents, children and others important relations to find the right way to care and protect the child.

Kamel, Lorenzo <1980&gt.

Full text
Abstract:
È strutturata in tre sezioni. The Ph.D. thesis of Lorenzo Kamel is based on a vast amount of primary sources from seventeen international archives. It has been structured in three sections. The first one outlines the mindset through which British religious and political authorities approached the Palestinian context during the first half of the 1800s. The second one examines how this mindset translated into concrete policies on the ground. This part, dedicated to the process through which the local complexity has been standardized under British influence, offers a comparative outlook on the various approaches adopted by Western Powers. It sheds also light on ‘Biblical Orientalism’, a deformed and preconstructed perception of the area rooted in the Bible instead of local realities. The traditions, customs and expectations of the majority of the men and women who for centuries have lived in Palestine have been relegated to a subsidiary role. Concepts like private property, state, citizenship, border, to name the most significant, have been applied uncritically, taking for granted that the locals would follow that mindsets. This has had repercussions clearly visible up to our days, as showed, for example, by the disputes on land ownership in present day West Bank. The final section focuses on the recent process connected to the construction of the first Palestinian archives. It may be understood as a growing internal need to break the vicious cycle triggered by the process of standardization. Or as an effort to emphasize a local reality that has grown for centuries in the name of an often denied continuity. Or as an attempt to recover a local way of life rooted in what maybe only the German concept of Heimat – referring to a place in which our most profound memories are rooted – is able to express.

VILLA, VALENTINA GIORGIA MARIA.

Abstract:
This research project wants to give a meaningful account of the role of the Queen in the foreign policy from the beginning of Her Majesty's reign in 1952 to 1972 (date of the United Kingdom's entry in the European Community). The shape of the Monarchy has often been outlined describing Her Majesty's biographical events, but in this way a research following an institutional point of view has always been left out. Instead, this type of research could enable to understand with more clarity the real contribution of the Crown in the British constitutional system. The necessity to investigate the role of the Queen does not come only from the absence of adequate and comprehensive studies about it, but derives from the belief that Elizabeth II — despite her full respect of the constitutional practices — had effectively guided Her realms through those difficult years which have seen the dismantlement of the Empire, the birth of the New Commonwealth, the tortuous path towards the European integration and the terrible and dangerous tensions caused by the Cold War. The role of Her Majesty as Head of State and as Head of the Commonwealth, as well the tenacious practice of the three fundamental rights enunciated by Bagehot — the right to be consulted, the right to encourage, the right to warn —, make this research more than motivated. Moreover, the particular attention dedicated to the trips and the visits of the Queen shows that these moments have more than a symbolical value in the international relations. As the nature of this project is purely innovative, this research has been carried out using mainly archives sources.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to study the evolution of the British Imperial security strategy. The work investigates the period between the end of the 18th Century and the beginning of the 19th. In the light of the evolution and the international contest that created it, it is studied the strategy applied by London during the First World War and will be analysed the case of the British Army’s expedition in Italy after the battle of Caporetto. The thesis shows that the immobility of the western front led the British Government to seek new fronts in order to gain its strategic objectives. The study shows how Great Britain interpreted the Italian front such as a tool to take resources away from Germany. After Caporetto the British came to Italy to support the Italian Army, they tried to use it to exclude Austria-Hungary from the conflict and to close off Germany. The thesis proves that, by the British point of view, the Italian front was an example of expeditionary strategy, but it became an integrated part of the Imperial British strategy only when Italy isolated Germany and organised its invasion from the South, after the battle of Vittorio Veneto.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Swedish legislation concerning collective labour law is based on a system where wages and general employment conditions are regulated by the parties on the labour market through collective agreements. Right of association is a right for employers and workers to belong and work for such an organization. Such organizations are given the right to negotiate in different situations through MBL. Interest disputes, or collective bargaining, refers to a situation where the organization of employers or the organization of workers want to reach a collective agreement, or to renew or change an agreement when the term of agreement has expired. The parties are entitled to take collective offensive actions in situations where no agreement exists. The right to take collective offensive actions is a constitutional right according to the Swedish constitution and can only be restricted through legislation or agreements. The most important restrictions are the non-strike agreement rules in 41-45 § § MBL.</p><p>According to the rules of lex Britannia in Swedish law, the non-strike agreement rules are not applicable in working conditions with a weak connection to the Swedish labour market. Furthermore, a collective agreement which is invalid according to foreign law due to a collective offensive action is valid in Sweden if the collective offensive action is valid in Sweden. Also, a Swedish collective agreement is able to push a foreign collective agreement aside concerning incompatible parts. The compatibility of lex Britannia and EC-law has been questioned in relation to article 12 EC concerning discrimination and the freedom to provide services in article 49 EC. Lex Britannia’s purpose is to prevent social dumping which is an acceptable restriction of the freedom to provide services.</p><p>The directive concerning posting of workers consists of mandatory rules for minimum protection regarding applicable employment conditions which will be applied in the host state, including rules of minimum wage. One of the purposes of the directive is to prevent social dumping and to safeguard the workers right. Utstationeringslagen does not include any minimum wage rule. According to the preparatory act, the lex Britannia rules are regarded as sufficient means to prevent social dumping in Sweden.</p><p>The Labour Market Court decided to ask for a preliminary ruling in case AD 2005 no 49. The case concerned whether collective offensive actions, which had been taken in order to force a posted company in Sweden to apply the Swedish collective agreement in the construction trade, is in breach of article 12 EC and article 49 EC and the directive concerning posting of workers. The case concern the lex Britannia rules in particular since they make the collective offensive actions allowed in situations where MBL is not applicable.</p>

Asciutti, Valentina. "Poetic Britannia : a census of Latin verse inscriptions." Thesis, King's College London (University of London), 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.616910.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to collect in a distinct corpus all the Latin verse inscriptions found in Roman Britain, those entirely metrical and those mixed with prose, those definitely metrical and those questionably so as well, analyse them both individually and as a block, with all the relative interconnections. The texts are also considered as evidence for a certain type of Romanisation spread in the province from the first to the fourth century AD. The aim of my research is to: - create a complete census of all the Latin verse inscriptions gathered from Roman Britain - trace the history of their discovery and map out the previous, including antiquarian, studies on them. This proves to be particularly useful for those inscriptions that experienced a tangled history and where with time some crucial details about the text and its archaeological context went missing in the accounts. - analyse the texts both from an epigraphic-historical and linguistic-philological point of view - offer fresh interpretations and supplements of the fragmentary texts - put the inscriptions in relation to their archaeological context - consider the implications for the cultural level of the province during the Roman occupation The results arc compared to those extrapolated from the metrical inscriptions found in Gallia Belgica. My investigation has clearly shown that the use of verse inscriptions in Britannia was markedly different from that in neighbouring Belgica. The comparison brings interesting conclusions and observations regarding the different approach and use of verse inscriptions in the two Roman provinces. Latin verse inscriptions represent an interesting key-study on the leve I of culture and sophistication that the Romans, together with the locals, achieved in a provincial environment. The comparative study proves the thesis that verse inscriptions do say something about the type of Romanisation of a province: the metrical texts found in Belgica are in fact quite different from those from Britannia.

Prince, Andrew Charles Vaughan. "Learning the collision regulations at Britannia Royal Naval College." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.572899.

Abstract:
This Thesis reports on a study of the ways in which officer cadets study the Collision Regulations at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), which is widely held to be difficult and, anecdotally, leads to a high failure rate on testing. The research is opportunistic since my background both in the Royal Navy and as a civilian lecturer at BRNC facilitated unprecedented access and the potential for original discoveries. I took a mixed-methods approach with both quantitative and qualitative features within a pragmatic paradigm, based upon an eclectic selection of methodological models to suit the case, in order to achieve a measure of triangulation upon the learning with the aim of understanding it: I chose not to be bound by anyone theoretical perspective. In order to facilitate this I set five research questions. My aim was to add to the existing body of research on learning in order to generate some practical recommendations for improving learning the Collision Regulations to the benefit of the College and the wider seafaring community. I reached four principal conclusions: first, that there were a number of practical ways in which the learning could be improved; second, that the biggest single factors in determining success or failure were the attitude towards learning and the confidence exhibited by the students; third, that the failure-rate is not as high as expected and the majority of students at this level do not find it as difficult as anecdotal and historical evidence suggests and fourth, that to describe and understand the unique context of learning at BRNC requires a combination of several theoretical approaches to learning.

Abstract:
A stratigraphic framework for altered volcanic rocks assigned to the Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous Gambier Group (Heah et al., 1986) is proposed that correlates units from the abandoned Britannia Mine with strata along the eastern section of Britannia Ridge and the Furry Creek valley. Geological mapping defines three packages, interpreted as volcanic sequences, that represent a continuous succession of mainly mafic to felsic volcanics. From north to south, packages 1, 2 and 3 dip moderately and face consistently southwest. Package 1 is characterized by a mafic flow sequence intruded by rhyolite domes. Package 2 is dominated-by a felsic dome complex and a sedimentary basin, both blanketed by a thick pyroclastic flow unit. Package 3 is characterized by felsic lavas and ash flow tuffs gradational upwards to a thick argillite unit. Developed orebodies occur at two major horizons that are close to the lower and upper contacts of package 2. Sulphides associated with chert horizons occur within altered sheared equivalents of crystal lithic tuff and felsic breccia related to felsic dome complexes. Whole rock analyses define an altered calc-alkaline volcanic suite. Alteration, attributed to hydrothermal solutions accompanying massive sulphides, is most intense in packages 1 and 2 where rocks are MgO-rich, CaO-poor and enriched or depleted in alkalis compared to normal subalkaline rocks. Rocks in package 3 and from later crosscutting dykes are relatively unaltered. Rb-Sr values tentatively define a Jurassic to Early Cretaceous age of 167 ± 37 Ma for the altered volcanic suite. K-Ar dates of 90.5 ± 3.2 Ma and 81.4 ± 3 Ma are interpreted as reset by Coast Plutonic Intrusions surrounding the volcanic pendant and a later deformational or undocumented intrusive event. Massive sulphides associated with felsic volcanic rocks on Britannia Ridge are similar to volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits described in the Canadian Archean greenstone belts and the Miocene Kuroko deposits of Japan.<br>Science, Faculty of<br>Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of<br>Accompanied by two oversized thesis maps<br>Graduate

The aim of the thesis is to investigate about the reception of Persius’ poetry in the Renaissance period and to provide a critical edition of Giovanni Britannico’s commentary on Satires. Britannico’s work was published in Brescia in 1481 and it enjoyed a great diffusion and great appreciation in France during the 16th Century. The first chapter analyses Persius Satires reception in Italy during the second half of the 15th Century, by reviewing commentaries written before Britannico’s work. Then the thesis provides a biographical profile of the author and it analyses his literary production in the context of editorial and printing press activity of his family. The third chapter describes the structure and the features of the commentary, by comparing it with contemporary production on Persius. The last one studies the reception of the commentary in Europe in 16th Century. The critical edition of Britannico’s commentary is accompanied by a critical apparatus providing information about variant reading of the text and about its sources

Abstract:
What happens to mining towns and their environments after they close? This question draws attention to both the social and cultural afterlives of mined landscapes, as well as the environmental legacies that follow mine closures. In this thesis, I explore these issues through a case study of the former copper mining town of Britannia Beach, BC. Located 30km north of Vancouver, on the eastern shore of Howe Sound, copper mining began at Britannia Beach with the opening of the Britannia mine in 1905. Production continued for the next 70 years, and at its peak, the Britannia mine was widely considered to be the largest copper producer in the British Commonwealth. Following its closure in 1974, the mine was redeveloped as a museum and heritage site, celebrating the history of mining at the Britannia and in BC. However, the site’s mining past continued to define and shape Britannia’s afterlife in other less celebratory ways. In the years after the mine closed, Britannia became mired in controversy over its longstanding pollution problems in the form of acid mine drainage. In examining the afterlife of this formerly mined site, I trace out the history of both of these legacies: cultural and environmental. I detail the redevelopment of the old mine as a museum and heritage site, and trace out ways in which the state and the mine’s various owners negotiated and developed remediation projects in order to address Britannia’s environmental issues. I focus on the tensions, conflicts and controversies that emerged between these cultural and environmental legacies -- between the desire to preserve and commemorate Britannia’s mining past and the need to remediate the mine. In tracing out the interplay between these dynamic and entangled legacies, I explore the ways in which different narratives of place, the past and the future were articulated through processes of commemoration and remediation.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Geography, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
This thesis examines the nexus of politics, ideology, and identity among Anglo-Canadian liberal intellectuals during Wilfrid Laurier's leadership of the Canadian Liberal party from 1887 to 1919. This 'Laurier era' was characterised by explosive demographic and economic expansion, the consolidation of Canada's political and constitutional order, and its rising international stature within British Empire. But it also witnessed divisive disputes over the nature and development of the new Confederation. These debates over 'Dominion nation-building' were central to Canadian political and intellectual life, shaping the evolution of liberal ideology and the growth of national and imperial sentiment. In particular, the thesis focuses on a group of liberal intellectuals and politicians who resided in or originated from the province of Ontario and associated with Laurier during his reign as Prime Minister and leader of the Opposition. It reinterprets their debates in global and local contexts, specifically through the lens of a 'Greater Ontario' - a virtual province of Canada and the British world comprised of 'Old' Ontario, with its metropolis at Toronto, and the 'neo-Ontarian' settler empire of the Prairie West. Its argument is threefold. First, it argues these liberals envisaged Canada, with 'Greater Ontario' at its heart, as a 'British nation' rooted in North America. Their growing sense of Canadian nationalism was distinctly 'Britannic' - indeed, 'British-American' - and drew upon civic as well as racial ideas of 'Britishness.' Second, it maintains that the political, ideological, and regional fault lines within Ontario's liberal tradition consequently shaped their competing visions of the Dominion, the British Empire, and the wider Anglo-world. And third, it contends that these debates illuminate the rise and subsequent disintegration of Wilfrid Laurier's Liberal party in 'Greater Ontario.' The thesis thus contributes a new perspective to the political and intellectual history of Canada and the British world.

Abstract:
Pro gradu -tutkielmani tarkastelee Iso-Britannian suhtautumista Bosnian kriisiksi kutsuttuun tapahtumasarjaan, joka käynnistyi kun Itävalta-Unkari liitti ennen Turkille kuuluneet Bosnian ja Hertsegovinan maakunnat alueisiinsa vuonna 1908. Kriisi päättyi seuraavana vuonna Serbian tunnustettua viimeisenä valtiona maakuntien liittämisen kaksoismonarkiaan. Iso-Britannian suhtautumisen kautta pyrin erittelemään Iso-Britannian ulkopolitiikan pyrkimyksiä kriisin aikana ja yleisemmin. Arvioin kuinka Iso-Britannian ulkoministeriö onnistui asettamiensa tavoitteiden toteuttamisessa. Omaa lehdistöään Iso-Britannia piti vapaana maailman omatuntona.

Abstract:
The departure point of the present work is the idea that in order to understand what music meant to British society in the Eighteenth-Century an interdisciplinary approach is necessary. Natural philosophy, moral philosophy, musical treatises and histories of music: all these sources concur both to the creation of a new idea about what music and its ‘science’ are, and to question the place which music ought to have in the realm of the Science of Man. The dissertation is divided into two sections. In the first one we will take into account philosophical sources (from John Locke, Joseph Addison and Lord Shaftesbury, to Lord Kames and Adam Smith), and we will examine their thoughts on music. In the second one we will deal with musical sources (from the Treatise of Musick of Alexander Malcom, to the Histories of Music of Charles Burney and John Hawkins) in order to show their connection with the philosophical literature before mentioned. The main aim of the work it to show that the development of specific philosophies of the human mind, such as the ones of John Locke and David Hume, did influence the way in which music was thought. Particularly we will point out the case of Adam Smith’s interpretation of instrumental music, which is heavily indebted to the humeian model of the human mind.

Abstract:
Questo particolare permette di notare la presenza, a Roma, di una grand strategy che, consapevole del fenomeno della guerriglia, ne affidò la repressione agli stessi generali, specialisti della controguerriglia, non esitando a spostarli, in caso di necessità, da un capo all'altro dell'impero.<br>Aim of this work is the analysis of the strategical, tactical and social aspects of the anti – roman guerrilla warfare in Britannia and Judaea, from the first century B.C. to the III A. D. The target is to underline the differences between conventional and irregular warfare and to analyze the theoretical and practical Roman answers to this particular method of fighting. The first part of the thesis analyzes the characteristics of guerrilla warfare with the use of comparative method, that is comparing some of the most important works about guerrilla written in different periods and historical contexts, trying to obtain some constant rules, potentially applicable in every historical period and geographical area. In the second part there is an attempt to apply these rules to the Roman empire, with particular attention on the relations between the Roman concept of bellum iustum and the irregular strategy. In the third and fourth part there is an analysis of the anti – Roman resistance in Britannia and in Judaea, with particular attention on rural guerrilla, urban guerrilla, terrorism, about the evolution from war of gangs to conventional warfare and about Roman counter - guerrilla. The choice of these two provinces in not casual, because in both, in spite of distance and geographical differences, Rome sent the same generals, expert in counter – guerrilla. This aspect underline the presence, in Rome, of a grand strategy that, conscious of the importance of guerrilla warfare, entrusted the same generals of her repression, without any hesitation in moving them from one end to another of the empire.

Abstract:
The Dissertation analyzes the 'cartographic' sections of the books III and IV of Strabo’s Geography, which are reported in Greek and accompanied by an Italian translation, a brief comment and an essential bibliography. The basis for this critical analysis is, from time to time, a brief historical profile of the examined region because, ultimately, it is the history that reveals the information “about the position of the places and about the distances" (Polybius). In accordance with Strabo’s description, Iberia, Gaul and Britain represent the milestones of the Roman conquest, that was decisive for the perception and the representation of the most internal areas of the western Europe. This regional trisection corresponds the three chapters of the Dissertation; the sub-divisions of each chapter reflect the peculiarities of the different areas described by Strabo’s sources (Polybius, Posidonius, Artemidorus). The topography of the lived space and the geometric schemes of the bigger geographical areas belong to two different criteria of representation. The general picture establishes an orthogonal scheme. Dictated by erroneous north-south course of the Pyrenees (that derives from Polybius) and based on the delineation of the main physical elements (rivers and mountains), this orthogonal scheme stretches until the Rhine, involving also the southern coast of the Britain. A problem rests unsolved: in which way this scheme

This kind of metrics were created to help writers to evaluate their text, and recently in automatic text simplification for undercapable readers. In this work we apply these metrics to documents freely retrieved from the Internet, seeking to find correlations between legibility and relevance acknowledged to then by search engines. The initial premise guiding the comparison between readability and relevance is the statement known as Occam s Principle, or Principle of Economy. This study employs Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level in text documents retrieved from the Internet through search-engines queries and correlate it with the position. It was found a centralist trend in the texts recovered. The centralist tendency mean that the average spacing of groups of files from the average of the category they belong is meaningfull. With this measure is possible to establish a correlation between relevance and legibility, and also, to detect diferences in the way both search engines derive their relevance calculation. A subsequent experiment seeks to determine whether the measure of legibility can be employed to assist him or her choosing a document combined with original search engine ranking and if it is useful as advance information for choice and user navigation. Abstract:
Colen Campbell (c.1676-1729) is remembered for his contribution to English architecture in the early eighteenth century, and most notably for his authorship of three volumes of the architectural book Vitruvius Britannicus. In recent interpretations, Campbell's part in this venture has been called into question, assigning him the role of a mere draughtsman, only promoted to author due to circumstantial pressures. This thesis aims to contribute to the existing scholarly work by taking into consideration the drawings for the production of Vitruvius Britannicus, which have hitherto remained understudied. These drawings will be used as the basis for my investigation of the production of Vitruvius Britannicus. I also supply the first catalogue raisonné of these drawings. Across five chapters, I trace the production of Vitruvius Britannicus in the order in which it occurred. This chronology is reflected in the structure of my thesis. Chapter I sets out the provenance of the Campbell drawings and investigates their purpose and technique, both in the categories of drawing for building and drawing for engraving. Chapter II presents the origins of the designs included by Campbell in Vitruvius Britannicus. Chapter III investigates possible origins of the book in Scotland, by looking at three disparate individuals who may have provided Campbell with graphic material or skills needed for the production. In addition, visual material Campbell certainly utilised when in London is analysed. Chapter IV considers the accuracy of the source material which Campbell adopted, drawing on specific remaining examples. Chapter V deals with the final stage of production, the transformation of the drawings to engravings. The engraver for Vitruvius Britannicus, Henry Hulsbergh, is investigated, as is another, unidentified, engraver who assisted in the production of volume I. I present a challenge to the recent interpretations of Vitruvius Britannicus, and add to the existing understanding of the role which Campbell played in the production. I develop a hitherto unexplored interpretation of the genesis of the book, emphasising Campbell's own Scottish origins, and promote the view that he was instrumental in the conceptualisation of its production from the earliest stages.

Abstract:
The study of Celtic, Germanic, and Celtiberian women is an area of gender and historical focus that has only recently been addressed by academic scholars – and then only to a limited degree. The fractured understanding of this area of history is, in part, due to a shortage of relevant primary written sources and archaeological material. In part, it is also due to a language barrier, since research into this field has the potential to include more than a dozen modern and ancient European languages, as well as several regional dialects. This work probed primary historical sources (classical Greek and Roman), secondary sources (analysis by academics in various fields), archaeological, and epigraphic materials to extract pertinent information. An examination of individual women was presented. This was then combined with broader knowledge of peoples in and from these regions to create an understanding of women in Celtic, Germanic, and Celtiberian cultures during the eight centuries under consideration. Finally, this was compared and contrasted across the various regions. Research and critical analysis of this material dispelled some long-held generalizations (such as the view that Celtic women routinely participated actively in war) and revealed some little- discussed facts (such as that classical sources indicated that Celtiberian women held the most unusual roles of the women examined). Other aspects of women’s lives became clear, including ways in which they were part of trade and industry including, but not limited to, the manufacture of textiles, agriculture, mining, and medicine. This led to a discussion on the concept of identity. It became clear that Celtic, Germanic, and Celtiberian women during the period of 400 BC– AD 235 occupied both traditional and nontraditional roles, that these were recorded (at least to some degree) in Greek and Roman classical sources, and that much of this can be confirmed from what has been learned from archaeological and epigraphic material.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The confrontation with Britishness in Canada in the mid-1960s is being revisited by scholars as a turning point in how the Canadian state was imagined and constructed. During what the present thesis calls the “crisis of Britishness” from 1964 to 1968, the British character of Canada was redefined and Britishness portrayed as something foreign or “other.” This post-British conception of Canada has been buttressed by historians depicting the British connection as a colonial hangover, an externally-derived, narrowly ethnic, nostalgic, or retardant force. However, Britishness, as a unique amalgam of hybrid identities in the Canadian context, in fact took on new and multiple meanings. Historians have overlooked ethnic and cultural nuances among the various ethnicities—English, Scots, Irish, etc. The role of Britishness as a constitutive and animating element embedded in the Canadianism of hybridized individuals and groups, and not only those of British ethnicity, has been neglected. Significantly, it was members, almost all male, of an Anglo-Celtic core ethnie, some of whom had made the pilgrimage to Oxford University, who carried out the othering process, the portrayal of Britishness as something that was not truly Canadian—introducing a new national flag, for example, with French Canadians and non-British ethnic groups largely sidelined. At the same time, the neo-aristocracy within this core ethnie did not so much abandon its heritage as assign to it a new and less public role that they regarded as “distinctively Canadian.” If the overt Britishness of the Red Ensign was downgraded, the new flag was a less dramatic break with the past than is commonly assumed. In a sense, Anglo-Canadians implemented the kind of local change and development foreseen by liberal theorists of Empire, who saw in the Res Britannica an evolving association of diverse elements and nationalisms that represented a fulfillment, rather than a rejection, of Britishness. Abstract:
In the 1990s, a string of successful bands such as Blur, Oasis, Pulp and Suede, inspired by glorious forefathers like the Beatles, revived the British rock genre. The press was quick to dub this new scene "Britpop", to describe the way these bands drew their inspiration from their own sense of Britishness, both in their appearance and in their lyrics, which documented several aspects of youth and working-Class cultures in Britain. Meanwhile, the Labour Party was undergoing a similar kind of rebirth under the influence of Tony Blair, who rebranded his party as New Labour. Since Britpop offered a positive, near-Patriotic vision of Britishness in line with the spirit of "Cool Britannia", Blair sought to obtain a very visible support from the Britpop scene in the run-Up to the 1997 general election. This was conceived as a way to help rejuvenate the Labour Party's image and to secure the youth vote which had eluded the left since the 1980s. However, the traditional view of rock music (as a type of protest music, prone to generating subcultures) hardly seems compatible with the idea that it could be used to support a mainstream political party. As the Britpop format went on to influence homegrown rock music into the next decade, with Gordon Brown succeeding Blair as Prime Minister in 2007, it seems several bands took British rock back to its primary, subversive function by painting a realistic picture of British society, closer to the concept of "Broken Britain" than to that of "Cool Britannia"

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the novels written and published by expatriate Irish women resident in Britain between the years 1890 and 1916, concentrating particularly on the ways in which their texts engaged in the dialogue and participated in the debates surrounding events of import to the political relationship between Britain and Ireland from the downfall of Charles Stewart Parnell to the Easter Rising. The poet William Butler Yeats defined this era as the 'long gestation' of Ireland's violent struggle towards independence from Britain, and it is to the works of Yeats and his Revivalist cohort that critical attention has overwhelmingly turned in assessments of the role that Irish literature played in the politics of the period. The practice of privileging Revivalist texts has tended to occlude the contribution of Irish writers whose work was extrinsic to that movement, and has most notably obfuscated the participation of novels written by Irish women. This study seeks to redress the imbalance of scholarly work by taking into account the critically neglected texts of a group of Irish women writers who were living and working in Britain during the period, and were thus placed in the complex cultural locus between 'Irish' and 'English'. The work of six authors - Emily Lawless, L. T. Meade, George Egerton, Katherine Cecil Thurston, M. E. Francis and Katharine Tynan - who were producing and publishing texts from just such a cultural location is the focus of this study. Between them, these writers generated nearly 500 novels, almost all of which are now out of print and few of which have received sustained scholarly attention. By excavating biographical details for each of these authors and examining a selection of their works in their relevant historical contexts, this study assesses the extent to which novels written by six Irish migrant women from varying class-based and religious backgrounds communicate the experience of living in- between two cultures and at the centre of the prevailing political and social debates of the era.

Abstract:
The national authorities in Sweden have entrusted management and labour with the task of setting, by way of collective negotiations, the wage rates and other terms and conditions of employment. The parties on the labour market, i.e. trade unions and employers have reached collective agreements, which prescribe the current terms and conditions. The autumn of 2004 something happened that has lead to questions about the role of the social partners and collective agreements, and whether the existing Swedish practice is compatible with rules of the EC Treaty on the freedom to provide services and the prohibition of discrimination on grounds of nationality.</p><p>Byggnads and Elektrikerförbundet (Swedish trade unions) toke collective actions with the aim of having a Latvian company, Laval un Partneri Ltd, to sign a Swedish collective agreement. The company posted Latvian workers to Sweden for the construction of a school in Vaxholm.</p><p>However, the dispute between the contending parties was about more than the construciton of a school. Finally the question concerned whether the freedom to provide services should be in a superior position, prior the fundamental right to strike.</p><p>In December 2007 the Court of Justice delivered the judgement in the Vaxholm dispute (or case C-341/05 Laval). The Court judged that the rules of the EC Treaty precluded Byggnads from taking collective actions. The collective actions were with other words not allowed. Lex Britannia, the rule that gives Swedish trade unions the right to take collective actions to force foreign providers of services to sign a Swedish collective agreement, was found to give rise to discrimination. This means that the Swedish labour law is not compatible with the rules of the EC Treaty on the freedom to provide services. For that reason the Swedish labour law now has to amend.</p><p>The purpose of this essay is to investigate conceivable changes of the labour law in Sweden, as an adjustment to the rules of the EC Treaty. 42 § MBL, which includes lex Britannia, and the Law on the posting of workers are some national regulations that can be amended. Several others changes could be done, e.g. introduction of a principle of proportionality in the Swedish labour law, or a demand from the Swedish government for an exception of collective agreements and collective actions in the Treaty of Lisbon.</p>

Abstract:
Abstract This study offers a new perspective on the publicly well-known event Normandy invasion. However, this study concentrates on the preparation time of the invasion. The subject is co-operation and it is done by careful investigation of original sources. The minutes of American and British meetings and conferences can be regarded as the foundation stones of this research. The study covers the time December 1941 to the sixth June 1944. This is a natural choice to start because after Japan had attacked Pearl Harbour the United States joined the war and practically allied with Great Britain. Study ends On the 6th June 1944 the operation Overlord or the Normandy invasion started. The Normandy invasion is a famous military operation. However, the preparation time before the 6th June 1944, invasion and particularly the co-operation during the preparations are less known. There is a plethora of studies dealing with the co-operation but the sources of those studies are limited. Some studies have also aged, so a new fresh analysis is needed. The co-operation between the American and British war leaders can be described as a mixture of distrust, selfishness - especially on making decisions of strategy - and subjectivity. These two great allies did not find a real harmony in the preparations. Roosevelt was slow to act when the war events would have needed quick decisions. His style to arrange only few meetings with his most important soldier, General George C. Marshall, rendered the whole work of the United States military leadership. Churchill's imagination and quickly changing opinions frustrated his key man General Alan Brooke who, however usually managed to keep Churchill on line. One of the main problem in this co-operation was the lack of personal contact between Marshall and Brooke. The problems were solved many times by Field-marshal John Dill - the leader of British Joint Staff Mission in Washington. Dill reached the trust of every single person in the alliance. Harry Hopkins as president Roosevelt's close personal adviser was a great link between the president and Marshall. The battle of Stalingrad changed the position of view on the Normandy invasion planning. After Stalingrad Roosevelt thought the French invasion as a likely cornerstone of the American politics after the war. By Overlord the power of Soviet Union could at least be limited. General Dwight David Eisenhower as the Supreme Commander of Overlord operation lead the final preparations in spring 1944. Eisenhower had on several occasions a narrow margin to act because both political and military pressure. In spite of this he was successful and like Hopkins and Dill he was the main person to ensure that the co-operation worked.

Abstract:
The dissertation aims to provide an overview of some aspects of everyday life in Roman Britain in general and in the area of Hadrian’s Wall in particular. In a preliminary description, the writer addresses the complex topic related to the genesis of borders as the fulfillment of the expansionist parable of Rome, and as the space manifestation of the sunset of the idea of an imperium sine fine. Then the thesis passes to examine, in subsequent chapters, first the religious theme in its peculiar indigenous component and in the cultural practices triggered by the process of Romanization, secondly the question whether is possible to study everyday life in the northernmost province of the Empire through a discussion of the civilian settlements in proximity to military sites. This issue is drawn especially thanks to the analysis of the so-called Vindolanda tablets, which constitute a valuable evidence of a lively environment both under human and social respect. Before giving an indication of the specific bibliography, the work offers a number of appendices which elaborate part of the information which has been supplied in the previous sections. Mention of the epigraphic repertoires and literary and antiquarian sources is finally made.

Abstract:
The object of the research is religious discrimination, from a juridical point of view. The first chapter gives an overview of the different interpretations of the concept of equality and non-discrimination in international and European law. In the second chapter the research focuses on the EC directives n. 2000/43 and 2000/78 on racial discrimination and discrimination in the field of employment, which are relevant instruments for promoting integration and equality among the different ethnic and religious groups living in Europe. The other two chapters examine the implementation of the directives in Italy, France and United Kingdom. In these countries there are different approaches to combating discrimination and to dealing with religious diversity and religious needs. For all of them, however, the implementation of antidiscrimination law implies to tackle the problem of finding a balance between the principle of equality and the protection of religious diversity.
