Northeastern England and the North Sea Basin is a critical location to examine the influence of glaciation in the northern Hemisphere during the Quaternary. This region was a zone of confluence between the British and Fennoscandian Ice Sheets, and harboured several dynamic ice lobes sourced from northern Scotland, the Cheviots, the Lake District and the Southern Uplands. This core is currently the only available high resolution record for the calibration of Late Quaternary sedimentary sequences of the British (Hebridean) margin. In the late Pleistocene, most of British Columbia and northern Washington was covered by the Cordilleran ice sheet. The weight of the ice sheet caused up to several hundred metres of depression of the Earth’s crust. This caused relative sea level to be higher in southwestern British Columbia despite lower global eustatic sea level. After deglaciation, postglacial rebound of the crust caused sea level to quickly drop to below present levels.
