The creation of the hill station landscape was one of the tangible evidences of British imperialism in Malaya from the late 18th century until 1957. In the past, British expatriates retreated from lowland to higher lands due to their inability to adapt to hot climates and the threat of malaria. However, despite looking at landscapes as colonial remains, hill stations depict the human genius in taking the opportunity offered by the natural environment with specific geographical factors to satisfy one’s needs and bring comfort to their health. Landscape paintings were one of the earliest visual art renditions of the Malay land in Malaysia. Traveller artists who arrived in Malaya and Singapore during the 18th and 19th centuries illustrated various subject matters that they observed. The most common examples included tropical flora and fauna, various views and landscapes, British residences, and so on. The theme of a tremendously fertile land with beautiful natural resources and prosperous economic activities is among the few themes and representations that were drawn or painted by early Malayan artists in the early 20th century. The second goal is to lay my finger on some basic properties of peasant landscapes elsewhere in the world. This research explores the historical and cultural geographies of camouflage through an empirical focus upon the British ‘civil camouflage project’ of the 1930s and 1940s. In recent years, the practice of camouflage has received an increasing amount of attention across academic disciplines such as art, history, architectural studies, and the biological sciences, but it remains an area relatively unexplored by geography. This research highlights how a critical examination of camouflage can contributed to some of the key debates within cultural and historical geography surrounding such issues as

This thesis explores a contemporary literary movement that has been called ‘the new nature writing’, framing it in its wider historical and cultural context of the last forty years. Drawing on recent developments in cultural geography, it explores the way such terms as ‘landscape’ and ‘place’ have been engaged with and reinterpreted in a diverse project of literary re-mapping in the British and Irish archipelago. It argues that the rise of environmentalism since the late 1960s has changed and destabilised the way the British and Irish relate to the world around them. It is, however, concerned

Yellow-cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) is currently undergoing a dramatic decline in western North America, with concentrated areas of decline located in southeast Alaska and coastal British Columbia. The main objective of this research was to contribute to the understanding of the yellow-cedar decline phenomenon by examining the spatial pattern of the decline and assessing the relations with topographic variable
