Abstract:
Abstract Over the course of British colonial rule in Malaya, the Peranakan Chinese (hereafter referred to as Peranakan) attempted to bring to life a complex imagination of nationhood predicated on an inclusive and multi-ethnic approach to integrating Malaya’s plural society. A creolized community borne of intermarriage between Chinese migrants anqd indigenous Malays, Peranakan ideas of nationhood and belonging were influenced by their liminality. In word and deed, Peranakan political actors campaigned for the extension of citizenship rights to all those domiciled in Malaya regardless of race,

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the representations of the former British Straits Settlements in English fiction from 1819 to 1950, discussing both British literary works that are located in South East Asia and English-language novels from Singapore and Malaysia. Although over the centuries, Europeans of various nationalities had located, intermarried, and established unique cultures throughout the region, writing in the English language at first remained confined to travel accounts, histories, and some largely anecdotal fiction, mostly by civil servants. English East India Company employees wrote about

Abstract:
Examining film, literature and art produced during and after the Malayan Emergency, the guerrilla war fought between the Malayan National Liberation Army and the military forces of the British Commonwealth, this collection demonstrates how art functions as a record of cultural memory that both reinforces and challenges official histories. Beyond that, it also brings new understandings of the Malayan Emergency itself, and Malaysia’s subsequent development as a postcolonial nation. The first section of the book focuses on films and writings produced during the period of the Emergency to capture

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the ethno-culturally hybrid Straits Chinese, who intermarried with local Malays for generations in the Straits Settlements of British Malaya and Singapore, and the role of female education in efforts to restore their socioeconomic status during the early twentieth century. Straits Chinese were also known as Peranakan (Malay for “child/born of”), and their women were called Nyonya. Peranakan male elites (called Baba) expressed concerns about the backwardness of the Nyonya in the Straits Chinese Magazine and founded the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School to modernize their w
