Abstract:

Poesía Visual: Daniela Mastrandrea (Puerto Madryn), Yamel Najle (Puerto Madryn), Grupo Del Borde: Sonia Cortez, Bettina Muruzabal, Liliana Solari y Andriana Opacak (Río Gallegos), Silvia Ravetta (San Julián), Emanuel Reyes (Puerto Madryn), Daniela y Valeria Valenzuela (Río Gallegos).

Abstract In 1974, Winfried Fauser published his edition of Radulphus Brito’s commentary on the third book of Aristotle’s De anima. This contribution continues his project by providing an edition of Brito’s commentary on the first book and the first third of the second book. An analysis of this part of the commentary shows that Brito developed some original views that had an impact on the fourteenth-century commentary tradition.

Abstract:
This article establishes the context for the original publication of Ronaldo Brito's pioneering 1975 essay, “Neo-concretism Apex and Rupture of the Brazilian Constructive Project” in the third and last issue of the Rio de Janeiro-based art journal Malasartes. It argues that Brito's text was a concerted effort to intervene within the determining logic of what the author and others termed “the circuit,” that is, the conjunction of protagonists, operations, and effects that produce and reproduce “the art world.” In this sense, Brito's essay was nothing less than a discursive rejoinder to the provocation of Cildo Meireles's seminal conceptual work Insertions Into Ideological Circuits (1970–75), likewise published in Malasartes. Brito not only provided the first political and structural analysis of the Neo-concrete movement as a localized response to a transnational field of constructive practices, he advanced a model of critical art history that realigned theoretical production with ideological critique.

'Wales and the French Revolution', a recurring trope of Welsh history, implies a direct relationship between Wales and France. This article argues that the key transnational relationship for the people of Wales during the 1790s was to their own British state and their related identities as Britons. The focus is Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain), bard, scholar, and a Welsh Briton of the modern imperialist state. Wales of the revolutionary decade was bloodier, more British, and more in the shadow of Burke than often portrayed.

The summer of2000 saw yet another movie reduce the American Revolution to a cliched battle between virtuous Patriots and wicked Englishmen. As a Briton who teaches early American history, I have always approached the subject of the Revolution dressed in combat gear of my own. They then tell me in their exams how "we" beat the evil Brits who were oppressing "our" freedoms.

Abstract:
Abstract In three specific works, her 2004 short story “Maroggia” and the novels 500 temporali (2006) and Colpo di mare (2018), Christiana de Caldas Brito employs the fantastic and myth to address social injustice and women's alienation in highly unique ways. Analysis of the symbiotic interactions between protagonists and the waterscapes at the center of these narratives—rain, sea, and ocean—shows how the works affirm states of being and becoming that transcend forced borders. They reveal borders to be arbitrary and innately negotiable, be they hierarchies in nature, political lines, or boundaries between Western hegemonic religious beliefs and precolonial spiritual practices. Re-envisioning borders as generative sources of new possibilities of becoming and relating, de Caldas Brito offers compelling alternatives to exclusionary constructions of subjectivity and of mobile subjects in today's Mediterranean. This study aims to renew interest in de Caldas Brito's work and inspire further investigations of it.

Abstract:
In galvanic corrosion, the maximum distance from the periphery of the cathode to the anode is often defined as the throwing power. It dictates the surface area of the cathode involved in the galvanic corrosion and is also related to the extent of the accelerated anodic reaction. Therefore, its estimation is of great interest and importance in engineering applications, such as fastener and panel assembly [1], metal coatings [2], buried metallic structures [3], etc. Throwing power may be estimated experimentally by measuring the solution potential variation in close proximity to the electrode surface (Es) or through modelling, such as finite element analysis (FEA), provided the boundary conditions (polarization characteristics) are correctly determined. In this work, we investigated the throwing power for the Cu-to-carbon steel galvanic couple in the presence of bentonite clay, a scenario that could arise in the vicinity of a through-coating defect in the Canadian-designed nuclear waste container. Using a homemade micro-reference electrode array coupled to a Multichannel Microelectrode Analyzer (MMA), Es was measured simultaneously in 10 locations as a function of time in 0.1 M NaCl solution with and without bentonite clay, Fig. 1. Transient potential peaks were found when bentonite clay was added to the solution and are attributed to the increased galvanic activities driven by the reduction of air-formed Cu oxides. We further investigated this phenomenon using FEA. Boundary conditions were established experimentally under circumstances reflecting the actual surface states, i.e., with or without Cu oxides. Simulations were conducted considering secondary current distribution, using the appropriate boundary conditions. The obtained results match well with the experimental measurements, including the peak and the stable Es. Additionally, the dynamic change of the throwing power due to the evolution of the surface state was investigated through simulation and discussed. Reference [1] R.S. Marshall, A. Goff, C. AbstractThis article discusses a not well-known funerary monument commemorating a centurion of British descent. IGLS 13.1.9188 records the centurion, T. Quintius Petrullus, ‘from Britain’, of the Third Cyrenaican Legion, who died aged 30 at Bostra in Arabia. This was a young age for a centurion and the article suggests that he had entered the army by a direct commission rather than risen through the ranks. Accordingly, he is likely to have belonged to a high-status family. The Bostra appointment was probably his first. The appointment is put into context alongside other similar equestrian career paths and the Jewish War during the reign of Hadrian is proposed as a possible occasion for the posting. In addition, the article examines this Briton alongside other Britons abroad.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to reflect on women from the ancient society and their studies, especially from Britannia. This work is made up of Romans and Britons women, who composed different costumes, which interspersed, which lived there and which were in some way evidenced by written and/or material vestiges. This was not a homogenous group, both for the population that had already lodged there and for the one that came later, there was a great variety of ideas about their status and how they should lead their lives. Materials on Roman and Briton have already been found epigraphically, on altars, tombstones and burials. However, this work will compare these first sources with the work of Tacitus, Annals, since this author always seems to place women with pejorative characteristics, very different from the loving and amorous words given to them in these places of death.

Abstract:
Abstract A recent discussion of Arthur and Wales prompts a reply, using up-to-date research. It offers these surprising conclusions. Arthur really existed: he is not a myth or a legend, but historical. He will not have been Welsh, but a North Briton, and perhaps a Strathclyder. His battles, fought against other Britons and not the English, can all be located in southern Scotland and the Borders. Camlan, where Arthur fell, can be securely dated to 537 (after the Welsh annals) and situated north of Carlisle on Hadrian’s Wall (as proposed in 1935 by O. S. G. Crawford). The battle of Mount Badon in 493 will, however, have nothing to do with Arthur or North Britain. It was a British victory over the English, fought near Swindon and perhaps at the hillfort of Ringsbury overlooking Braydon Forest. Proponents of a Northern Arthur, like Rachel Bromwich (1915-2010) and Charles Thomas (1928-2016) can thus be vindicated against those rejecting a Northern Arthur, like Professor Kenneth Jackson (1909-91) of Edinburgh.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Though telling the story of the Roman conquest, Cymbeline features alliance and fraternity, instead of enmity, between ancient Briton and the Roman Empire. Cymbeline, through its appropriation of the Roman-Briton tie, gives shape to the imperial imagination of the Stuart court. Shakespeare depicts the historical King of Briton, Cymbeline, the legendary warrior raised by the Romans, as the British counterpart of Caesar Augustus and heir of the mythical Brutus. Cymbeline can also be seen as an avatar of James I, who at that time willed to become the second Brutus and was keen to conquer. Shakespeare presents a Romanized Briton as the proper heir to the Roman Empire, degrading the Empire’s natural descendent Italy for their moral corruption. The sense of moral superiority caters to the burgeoning imperial practice of the Jacobean monarch.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the memory of the Great War and the underexplored topic of morale during the Phoney War, and contributes to, and connects, their historiographies. Analysis of previously unexamined Mass Observation (MO) material confirms and qualifies some of the concerns about morale that MO expressed at the time. It also reveals that many Britons looked backwards to the Great War during the Phoney War, whether they had lived through the Great War or not, and their memories and understandings of the Great War informed their attitudes to the Second World War. Memories of wartime trauma were just one facet of the varied legacy of the Great War that Britons drew upon. Importantly, Britons of different ages drew upon post-war representations and personal and vicarious experiences to different extents, but those who were able to typically ascribed influence to personal rather than cultural memories of the Great War. This complicates the assumption that the latter determined Britons’ responses to the outbreak of the Second World War and contributes to understandings of both the reception and influence of cultural representations of the Great War, and the place of the Great War in the subjective worlds of Britons during the Second World War.

Abstract:
In the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region, operational deficiencies and limited maintenance capacities often impair automatic air quality monitoring stations. This results in frequent data omissions, compromising the reliability of environmental assessment data. Therefore, an effective data imputation method is required to address the gaps in observational records. Utilizing a Sequence-to-Sequence framework, we introduce a model termed Bidirectional Recurrent Imputation for Time Series-Attention-based Long Short-Term Memory (BRITS-ALSTM). The encoder of BRITS-ALSTM applies BRITS to integrate single-station historical characteristics with multi-station correlation features. Concurrently, the decoder employs LSTM within an attention mechanism to capitalize on previously observed data, thereby generating hourly imputations for missing air quality data values. The model was trained using six types of air quality data from 16 stations across Qinghai Province. Through localized testing and parameter optimization, BRITS-ALSTM achieved a reduction in mean relative error (MRE) by 74.88% compared to the baseline mean-filling approach. Additionally, ablation studies demonstrated an improvement in the coefficient of determination R-squared (R2) from 0.67 to 0.76, outperforming the standalone BRITS. Consequently, BRITS-ALSTM enhances the accuracy of air quality data evaluations in the Tibetan Plateau and offers an efficacious strategy for data imputation in elevated terrains.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the martyrdom of the Jesuit missionary Saint João de Brito (1647-1693) and the beginnings of his cult, at once embedded in the local dynamics of the Tamil country and extending towards broad imperial horizons. How did a Portuguese Jesuit, an agent of modern global Catholicism, become such a locally anchored figure? And how did the last moments of Brito’s life initiate a Tamil devotion that has lasted for over three centuries? A diverse array of sources is used to address these questions: the multilingual archives produced during early inquiries in support of Brito’s canonization (particularly the witness statements of his catechists), a missionary treatise in Tamil, and a life of Brito composed in Tamil by one of his catechists and preserved in a palm-leaf manuscript. Two conclusions emerge from this study. In the early eighteenth century, witnessing a martyrdom could be a means of acquiring a certain degree of sanctity, and thus a spiritual and social authority transmissible within family lineages. Moreover, by witnessing Brito’s life and death, Tamil Christian laymen found a way of inscribing their own lives into the history of Catholicism on both local and global scales.

Abstract:
Brito (2010) proposes a naturalistic analysis of morality, disagreeing with some authors who postulate an insurmountable is-ought gap. Here, we present his main arguments and advance some criticisms to them. Brito’s strategy consists in grounding the normative notion of ought on volitive notions, like “will” and “want”. In his perspective, to reach the moral level, a will has to be directed to itself and to all other wills. We try to show that this strategy fails, since moral normativity cannot be grounded on subjective phenomena, regardless of the contents of these phenomena. We also show some incoherence in Brito’s ideias about the possibility of is-ought reduction, as he seems to advocate that it is not possible to reduce “ought” to “is” while he also proposes the reduction of oughts to facts about volition.

Bellamy, Andrew. "The aftermath and afterlives of the Napier Fizzle across the British empire, 1834–42; or, how did Lord Napier die?" Historical Research, September 8, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/hisres/htae020.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In the fall of 1834 Lord William Napier died shortly after retreating from a tense stand-off with local authorities in Canton. While Napier’s retreat and conduct during the stand-off might easily have been construed as unbecoming of a Briton in China, his death marked the beginning of his afterlife as a martyr and hero across the British empire. This article asks how and why this happened. It argues that Napier enjoyed this afterlife because his death was placed within the context of a certain reading of Britain’s relationship with China to become a stand-in for all Britons. This assessment of the aftermath and afterlives of the ‘Napier Fizzle’ ultimately suggests a longer history that prevailing understandings of these events as a ‘fizzle’ do not fully encapsulate.
