Galavotti, Maria Carla. The Origins of Probabilistic Epistemology. Edited by Alan Hájek and Christopher Hitchcock. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199607617.013.8.

Abstract:
The notion of probability received great attention from 20th-century mathematicians and philosophers alike. This chapter focusses on a number of thinkers who not only devoted great efforts to the notion of probability and its foundations, but also developed a thoroughly probabilistic epistemological perspective. Special attention will be paid to Hans Reichenbach, Harold Jeffreys, and Bruno de Finetti. Although these authors embraced diverging interpretations of probability, namely frequentism in the case of Reichenbach, logicism in the case of Jeffreys, and subjectivism in the case of de Finetti, they shared the conviction that probability is an essential ingredient not just of science, but of human knowledge at large, and laid the foundations of a probabilistic approach to epistemology that is today mainstream.

Abstract:
This book addresses the controversies surrounding smallholders’ opportunities for economic and social upgrading by joining global agricultural value chains (AVC). While international organizations encourage small farmers to become part of AVC, critics point out its risks. Unlike previous single case studies, researchers from three continents compared the influence of the characteristics of the crop (coffee, mango, rice), the end markets, and the national political economic contexts on the social and economic conditions for smallholders and agricultural workers. Their findings highlight the importance of collective action by smallholders and of a supportive state for economic and social upgrading. Abstract:
This chapter describes and interprets social dance within country music’s fan culture beginning with a historical summary and then focusing on 2005–2015. It explores how dances are learned within fan communities, using the Sweetheart Schottische as a case study. It then traces the adoption of hip hop, rock, and pop into country line dancing, a return to regional differentiation of dance styles, and the migration of more traditional forms of country dancing out of country nightclubs. These shifts correspond to a significant change in how country music defines and incorporates aspects of musical history, especially the adoption of a more rock lineage. In an era marked by “bro-country,” both country music and the accompanying dance styles show an assimilation into mainstream popular culture, confronting and adapting aspects of country identity including dance that historically created a stark differentiation between country and other genres.

Abstract:
Abstract: This chapter surveys prior scholarly work on country music’s ostensibly conservative relationship to sexuality. It tracks how sexuality becomes linked to other identity markers in songs by artists such as Gretchen Wilson and k.d. lang, as country functions as not only a distinctly classed but also racialized, gendered, and regionalized genre traditionally associated with white working-class Southerners. It probes whether earlier and recent modes of white masculinity and femininity, might or might not be constituted in relationship to queerness and/or blackness. This overview also suggests new ways to expand the critical terrain by taking up case studies: (1) Tanya Tucker, the now-faded star of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, who gained early notoriety for her sexualized performance style and material; and (2) the recent bro-country sensation (Florida Georgia Line), whose young male artists recycle explicitly (hetero) sexual content through pseudo-hip hop rhythms and rapping.
