Distributed shared memory (DSM) provides the illusion of shared memory processing to programs running on physically distributed systems. Many of these systems are connected by a broadcast medium network such as Ethernet. In this thesis, we develop a weakly coherent model for DSM that takes advantage of hardware-level broadcast. We define the broadcast DSM model (BDSM) to provide fine-grained sharing of user-defined locations. Additionally, since extremely weak DSM models are difficult to program, BDSM provides effective synchronization operations that allow it to function as a stronger memory.

Abstract:
Many millions of people watch television weather forecasts everyday, but a detailed analysis of the information such forecasts convey and how and why viewers watch them has not previously been undertaken. Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2006.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 65-67).
In this thesis, we study the problem of efficiently scheduling users in a multi-antenna Gaussian broadcast channel with 1M transmit antennas and K independent receivers each with a single receive antenna. We first focus on a scenario with two transmit antennas and statistically identical users, and analyze the gap between the full sum capacity and the rate that can be achieved by transmitting to a suitably selected pair of users
