Abstract:
In the present thesis, Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home, the novel by the Jamaican writer Erna Brodber, is analyzed in the context of post-colonial identity trauma. Analyzing the complex organizational and narrative structure of the novel, the essay author studies how the novel’s rhythmicity and the broken narrative portray the protagonist’s identity fragmentation. Drawing on the work’s connection to the ring game played in the Caribbean and applying the symbolism of the Caribbean folk rhythms, the essay author discusses the subversive intent of Brodber’s novel and her method of rewriting the past as a way of recovering one's identity.

Shoot, Erin Janel. "Spinning the Plan Sideways." UKnowledge, 2016. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/english_etds/32.

Full text
Abstract:
Spinning the Plan Sideways is the story of Clara Gantz, a thirty-eight year old architect who spent her twenties getting her plans—and sections and elevations—just right. She built buildings in lieu of a family and has considered these buildings her children, but lately she’s been finding a void in wood, marble, and steel. Encouraged, with methods bordering on coercion, by Greta, her “sister” from the Gantz Home for Girls, Clara agrees to mentor Julien, a troubled twelve-year-old. Years ago, when Julien was five, his mother split their house apart, lifting it to make three-stories from one, and moved into the top level with her new husband and daughter, leaving Julien and his father, Michel on the levels below. The separation drove Michel to attempt suicide on Julien’s ninth birthday leaving him with violent aversions to homes over one-story tall. As Clara works with Julien, she discovers her life had been focused on developing the wrong types of plans and she invests in creating new plans for herself, Julien, and Michel. The story unfolds through the parallel viewpoints of Clara and Michel, with Julien’s Grim Fairytale tucked in the middle.

Abstract:
Abstract The objectives of this study were (1) to provide an overview of review studies on hope in health care, and to describe (2) conceptualizations of hope, (3) antecedents and consequences of hope, and (4) ethical topics related to hope. Electronic databases were searched and 73 review studies were selected and thematically analyzed. Hope was conceptualized as (a) an expectation: appraisal of a future outcome, (b) resilience: endurance of adversity, and (c) a desire: expression of meaning. Opposite concepts to hope were fear/anxiety, hopelessness, despair, and depression. Inspiring relationships, particularly relationships with peers, were an important factor that increased hope in patients. Losses, like the loss of health or (inspiring) relationships, had a negative impact on hope. Also, hope had effects on motivation for change and making decisions. The ethics of hope was addressed in palliative care, where health care providers wanted to maintain patients’ hope while being honest or realistic. In conclusion, this chapter offers an overview of hope in health care and offers conceptual clarification, including ethical issues related to hope. Future studies should broaden the ethics of hope by including other values than realism and they should include the hope of health care providers.

Abstract:
Flow visualization experiments of an air jet in liquid were performed. The test vessel was 270 mm wide, 5 mm depth and 300 mm high. The air jet was blown vertically upward into stagnant liquid in the test vessel from a nozzle of 1 mm wide, 5 mm depth and 20 mm long which was located at the bottom of the test vessel. A flow state of the jet in the liquid was recorded with a high speed video camera at fastest 5×105 f/s. The test liquid was water and kerosene. Experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. Filament-like ears and wisps pulled out from the wavy interface were noticed on the interface between liquid and the air jet. The ears and wisps were broken off and entrained into the air jet. The droplets broke up to small entrainments. This process seemed quite similar to the entrainment process in the annular dispersed flow in a pipe. As the air jet velocity increased, the number of entrainments created by the air jet increased lineally and the smaller entrainments increased. The correlation for the entrainment diameter distribution which was developed for the annular dispersed two-phase flow in a pipe predicted well the present results. The correlations for the entrainment diameter developed for entrainments in the annular dispersed two-phase flow in a pipe and for droplets that were blown out into open space above a water pool by a nitrogen gas jet that blew into water vertically upwards considerably underpredicted the experimental results. Measured entrainment rates were considerably lower than the prediction of the correlation for the annular dispersed two-phase flow in a pipe.

Abstract:
This study was intended to examine sodium entrainment behavior in the case that a hole was formed on a tube wall in the steam generator of a fast breeder reactor and high pressure and high temperature water jetted out into sodium. Flow visualization experiments of an air jet in liquid were performed. The test vessel was 270 mm wide, 5 mm depth and 300 mm high. The air jet was blown vertically upward into stagnant liquid in the test vessel from a rectangular cross-section nozzle of 1 mm wide, 5 mm depth and 20 mm long which was located at the bottom of the test vessel. A flow state of the jet in the liquid was recorded with a high speed video camera at the fastest 150,000 frame/s. The test liquid was water and kerosene. Filament-like ears and wisps pulled out from the wavy interface were noticed on the interface between liquid and the air jet. The ears and the wisps were broken off and entrained into the air jet. The droplets broke up to small entrainments. This process seemed quite similar to the entrainment process in the annular dispersed flow in a pipe. Entrainment was initiated at a little bit downstream from the nozzle outlet. The entrainment inception point moved downstream as the air jet velocity increased. Axial directional entrainment velocity increased as the air jet velocity increased and the entrainment proceeded downstream. Transversal directional entrainment velocity was much slower than the axial directional entrainment velocity. The variation of the entrainment velocity in the transversal direction was not so prominent. The entrainments produced at the interface of the air jet moved to gather at the center portion of the air jet as those were accelerated.

Abstract:
Within Collaborative Research Center 561 “Thermally Highly Loaded, Porous and Cooled Multi-Layer Systems for Combined Cycle Power Plants” at RWTH Aachen University an effusion-cooled multi-layer plate configuration is investigated numerically by application of a 3-D in-house fluid flow and heat transfer solver, CHTflow. Previous conjugate calculations have shown a considerably decreased surface temperature for a hole geometry with a broken-away TBC, but could not attribute this effect conclusively to the decreased surface or the changed fluid flow conditions resulting from the changed outlet geometry. For this work, both conjugate calculations and calculations with adiabatic wall temperatures are conducted to analyse the flow in and around a hole with a fan-shaped outlet. The adiabatic calculations will exclude the effect of the solid body, making a quantification of its effects possible. The geometrical setup and the fluid flow conditions derive from modern gas turbine combustion chambers and bladings and are the same for both types of calculations. The numerical grid contains the coolant supply (plenum), the solid body for the conjugate calculations and the main flow area on the plate. The effusion-cooling is realized by finest drilled holes with a diameter of 0.2 mm that are shaped in the region of the thermal barrier coating. The flow field and the resulting temperature distributions on the hot gas surface will be discussed in detail for the two approaches, two blowing ratios and two different fan-shapes. Finally, the results will be discussed from the point-of-view of optimising the cooling effectivenss for effusion cooling geometries. The results will show that only for the smallest blowing ratio and the largest cooling hole exit area the decreased surface area of the TBC is the dominant factor.

Abstract:
Abstract Do we analyze on why can even the most reliable turbomachinery are getting failure and stopped? In some cases, it's all about bad installation or design literally. This paper explores the challenges one site had with repeated failure of lube oil fin fan coolers coupling which caused the unit availability of more than 3 months. It outlines the troubleshooting attempts made to remedy this issue, its root cause, and the resulting solution. This issue occurred at a site with a train configuration of motor driven centrifugal compressors. The plant lube oil system has been configured with 3 trains. Each train has been configured with Main electric motor + Vorecon Gearbox + Low Pressure centrifugal compressor + High Pressure centrifugal compressor. Lube oil system of the train has been configured as 2 lube oil coolers and 2 working oil coolers. Lube oil coolers are having fins with air cooler type. Air is supplied by fin fans and each train has 2 lube oil cooler fans and 2 working oil cooler fans. In total site has 3 trains x 4 fin fans so it has 12 fin fan cooler fans. All cooler fans are driven by electric motor which is coupled with gearbox and gear box is connected with cooler fan. During normal operation of working oil cooler fan A- stopped rotation suddenly from normal operation. During investigation, motor shaft was found running freely. No movement was seen on cooler fan. Coupling between motor to gearbox was inspected. Coupling is shear plate coupling. Its spacer flexible element were found broken into several pieces. Further investigation revealed that motor coupling hub was moving free axially back and forth due to clearance between motor shaft to coupling hub internal diameter. Motor side Coupling hub bolt hole was found with loss of material and ovality in shape. Hub locking Allen screw was found in damaged condition. Missing materials were noted and broken shear plate materials were found around coupling guard area. While site team was conducting the investigation on the unit A, similar incident occurred in next unit and other 3 units with 2 days difference between them. During detailed investigation it has been noted that all motor to gear box coupling are shear plates and shear plates were broken. Coupling hub was found loose and coupling hub locking screw was found broken or partial damage.

Although approximately half of all marriages in the U.S. end in divorce (Amato, 2010; Cherlin, 2010), the remarriage rate has declined steadily in recent decades (Brown & Lin, 2013; Schweizer, 2019). In this profile, we examine the trend in the remarriage rate since 1990 (see Note) and investigate geographic variation in the remarriage rate by gender using recent American Community Survey (ACS) data. This profile is an update of a previous profile on the Geographic Variation in the Remarriage Rate (FP-15-08).

Abstract:
The Northwest Tropical Atlantic Station (NTAS) was established to address the need for accurate air-sea flux estimates and upper ocean measurements in a region with strong sea surface temperature anomalies and the likelihood of significant local air–sea interaction on interannual to decadal timescales. The approach is to maintain a surface mooring outfitted for meteorological and oceanographic measurements at a site near 15°N, 51°W by successive mooring turnarounds. These observations will be used to investigate air–sea interaction processes related to climate variability. This report documents recovery of the NTAS-18 mooring and deployment of the NTAS-19 mooring at the same site. Both moorings used Surlyn foam buoys as the surface element. These buoys were outfitted with two Air–Sea Interaction Meteorology (ASIMET) systems. Each system measures, records, and transmits via Argos satellite the surface meteorological variables necessary to compute air–sea fluxes of heat, moisture and momentum. The upper 160 m of the mooring line were outfitted with oceanographic sensors for the measurement of temperature, salinity and velocity. Deep ocean temperature and salinity are measured at approximately 38 m above the bottom. The mooring turnaround was done on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ship Ronald H. Brown, Cruise RB-20-06, by the Upper Ocean Processes Group of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The cruise took place between 14 October and 1 November 2020. The NTAS-19 mooring was deployed on 22 October, with an anchor position of about 14° 49.48° N, 51° 00.96° W in 4985 m of water. A 31-hour intercomparison period followed, during which satellite telemetry data from the NTAS-19 buoy and the ship’s meteorological sensors were monitored. The NTAS-18 buoy, which had gone adrift on 28 April 2020, was recovered on 20 October near 13° 41.96° N, 58° 38.67° W. This report describes these operations, as well as other work done on the cruise and some of the pre-cruise buoy preparations.
