Rice supplies about 20% of the calories to the world’s consumers. Milling removes the outer husk and bran, breaking about 20% of the rice kernels during the milling process that equates to almost 100,000,000 tons of rice annually. Broken rice is discounted in price by almost half or relegated to non-human consumption. This study seeks to understand why this large percentage of rice production is discounted for human consumption. This paper proposes a microstrip wide-ring sensor for percentage of broken rice determination based on transmission power measurement. The microstrip wide-ring sensor with low insertion loss was designed to operate at frequency range from 1 GHz to 3 GHz. Calibration equations for measurement of percentage of broken rice at 1.93 GHz and 2.50 GHz were obtained and validated with white rice for percentage of broken rice ranging from 0% to 100%. The lowest error in percentage of broken rice prediction was 11.03% at 1.93 GHz.

In this work the new process of producing parboiled rice (PB) by combinatintion of microwave and hot air fluidized bed (MWFB) was proposed and investigated. Results showed that the drying time was shorter with smaller bed depth, higher drying temperature and higher microwave power.
