Abstract:
Reclaiming the Enlightenment: Toward a Politics of Radical Engagement, Stephen Eric Bronner, New York: Columbia University Press, 2004, pp. xiii, 181.I am very sympathetic to the project that Stephen Eric Bronner undertakes in this book. As someone inspired by the progressive potential of the Enlightenment, I find myself constantly on the defensive in a world deeply suspicious of the dead white men of eighteenth-century Europe. So I welcome a vigorous and uncompromising defence of those men and the ideals and values they stood for. For those of us who already see ourselves as working to further that tradition, this book is an inspiring call to keep up the good work. But for those who have been hesitant in their enthusiasm for the Enlightenment, this book will be more like a red flag waved in their face, confirming many of their suspicions of Western rationalism. Theorists of recognition, identity, post-colonialism, post-modernism, republicanism, communitarianism, post-secularism and multiple-modernities, are just some of the people who will not find this book very congenial. Ultimately, Bronner's uncompromising defence of the Enlightenment is less successful than it might have been.

Bakali, Moaad. "Espectrometría neutrónica en las centrales nucleares mediante un sistema de esferas bronner." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/3345.

Full text
Abstract:
A multisphere spectrometer, known as Bonner sphere system (BSS), has been set-up to characterise the neutron radiation field within the containment building of the nuclear power plant Vandellòs II (CNVII). The use of this multisphere system needs a set of calibration exercises, such to determine the threshold levels necessary to differentiate between the contribution of neutron and g fields, to discriminate the electronic noise, to normalise the entire measurements relative to an Am-Be source of 37 GBq, to study the system stability, etc. All these calibrations aim to obtain the optimum conditions of work for the system application at different survey measurements.
Similarly, the response matrix of the BSS, which initial determination is of great interest, is calculated using the MCNP4B particle transport code and the ENDF60 cross-section library. The obtained response matrix is validated by means of a set of neutron irradiations to calibrated sources and monoenergetic beams.
On the other hand, a computer unfolding program is developed in our group and, in turn, is validated by means of the ISO sources. The unfolding sensitivities with respect to uncertainties of the measurement and to the number of the Bonner spheres used are also studied. From the investigations carried out in this work, it is shown that under reasonable counting time (of the order of 105 impulses), the spectrometric and dosemetric results obtained are quite consistent.
The measurements carried out within the containment building of the (CNVII) have lead to characterise the neutron field existing in this installation. The data obtained show that the spectra are generally degraded with respect to the set of studied points. In the zones frequented by the staff of the exploitation, the equivalent dose rates, due mainly to thermal neutrons, are relatively small (< 30 mSv/h). However, there are some points within the containment building in which the spectra are less thermalised, where values of 300 mSv/h are reached.

Abstract:
Abstract The present study compares needed prerequisites for the application of cavitation resistant bronzes by applying different coating techniques, such as cold spraying, HVOF spraying, warm spraying and arc spraying. By optimization to optimum cavitation resistance, the deposited coatings can increase the service life of ship rudders significantly and even serve as repair processes for ship propellers. The given overview aims to support the selection of processes when specifying the target properties to be set with regard to cavitation protection. By using high-pressure warm spraying and cold spraying, properties similar to those of cast nickel aluminum bronze were achieved, however at relatively high costs. In contrast, coatings produced by using HVOF and arc spraying have erosion rates that are only about four respectively three times higher as compared to cast nickel aluminum bronze, while far outperforming bulk shipbuilding steel. Hence, their properties should be sufficient for acceptable service life or docking intervals for ship rudder applications. Propeller repair might demand for better coating properties as obtained by cold spraying. With respect to costs, HVOF and arc spraying in summary might represent a good compromise to reach coating properties needed in application.

Abstract:
Different compositions of bronze materials are used for sliding bearings in various applications including those involving oscillatory motion and moderate temperatures. The compatibility of new environmentally adapted synthetic esters with different contacting surface materials is important to ensure good tribological performance. The present work deals with tribological studies on oscillatory journal bearings manufactured with three different compositions of bronze materials lubricated with EALs under boundary lubricated conditions. Under certain operating conditions, dissolution of alloying constituents from the bronze bearing material dissolute into the synthetic ester lubricant occur leading to the formation of a copper enriched bearing surface layer. Tin-bronze with synthetic ester lubricant showed more stable friction values and roughly ten times better wear results than the harder aluminium- and manganese-bronze and also outperformed the mineral oil under the same conditions.

The results of radiocarbon dating of materials from Bronze Age sites located in Tarkhankut region (Crimea) is considering in the article. The materials were obtained from four settlements with double stone yards for domestic animals. These settlements were discovered together 20 other sites in the Northern-Western Crimea in the last decade. The radiocarbon dates gave a vast time interval in the frameworks of the Late Bronze Age. The earliest dates belong to the frontier of the Middle/Late Bronze Age. New results together with other archaeological materials open discussion about the cultures of the Bronze Age in the Crimea.

Downes, Jane, ed. Chalcolithic and Bronze Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society for Antiquaries of Scotland, September 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.184.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Building the Scottish Bronze Age: Narratives should be developed to account for the regional and chronological trends and diversity within Scotland at this time. A chronology Bronze Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report iv based upon Scottish as well as external evidence, combining absolute dating (and the statistical modelling thereof) with re-examined typologies based on a variety of sources – material cultural, funerary, settlement, and environmental evidence – is required to construct a robust and up to date framework for advancing research.  Bronze Age people: How society was structured and demographic questions need to be imaginatively addressed including the degree of mobility (both short and long-distance communication), hierarchy, and the nature of the ‘family’ and the ‘individual’. A range of data and methodologies need to be employed in answering these questions, including harnessing experimental archaeology systematically to inform archaeologists of the practicalities of daily life, work and craft practices.  Environmental evidence and climate impact: The opportunity to study the effects of climatic and environmental change on past society is an important feature of this period, as both palaeoenvironmental and archaeological data can be of suitable chronological and spatial resolution to be compared. Palaeoenvironmental work should be more effectively integrated within Bronze Age research, and inter-disciplinary approaches promoted at all stages of research and project design. This should be a two-way process, with environmental science contributing to interpretation of prehistoric societies, and in turn, the value of archaeological data to broader palaeoenvironmental debates emphasised. Through effective collaboration questions such as the nature of settlement and land-use and how people coped with environmental and climate change can be addressed.  Artefacts in Context: The Scottish Chalcolithic and Bronze Age provide good evidence for resource exploitation and the use, manufacture and development of technology, with particularly rich evidence for manufacture. Research into these topics requires the application of innovative approaches in combination. This could include biographical approaches to artefacts or places, ethnographic perspectives, and scientific analysis of artefact composition. In order to achieve this there is a need for data collation, robust and sustainable databases and a review of the categories of data.  Wider Worlds: Research into the Scottish Bronze Age has a considerable amount to offer other European pasts, with a rich archaeological data set that includes intact settlement deposits, burials and metalwork of every stage of development that has been the subject of a long history of study. Research should operate over different scales of analysis, tracing connections and developments from the local and regional, to the international context. In this way, Scottish Bronze Age studies can contribute to broader questions relating both to the Bronze Age and to human society in general.
