A multisphere spectrometer, known as Bonner sphere system (BSS), has been set-up to characterise the neutron radiation field within the containment building of the nuclear power plant Vandellòs II (CNVII). The use of this multisphere system needs a set of calibration exercises, such to determine the threshold levels necessary to differentiate between the contribution of neutron and g fields, to discriminate the electronic noise, to normalise the entire measurements relative to an Am-Be source of 37 GBq, to study the system stability, etc. All these calibrations aim to obtain the optimum conditions of work for the system application at different survey measurements.
Similarly, the response matrix of the BSS, which initial determination is of great interest, is calculated using the MCNP4B particle transport code and the ENDF60 cross-section library. The obtained response matrix is validated by means of a set of neutron irradiations to calibrated sources and monoenergetic beams.
On the other hand, a computer unfolding program is developed in our group and, in turn, is validated by means of the ISO sources. The unfolding sensitivities with respect to uncertainties of the measurement and to the number of the Bonner spheres used are also studied. From the investigations carried out in this work, it is shown that under reasonable counting time (of the order of 105 impulses), the spectrometric and dosemetric results obtained are quite consistent.
The measurements carried out within the containment building of the (CNVII) have lead to characterise the neutron field existing in this installation. The data obtained show that the spectra are generally degraded with respect to the set of studied points. In the zones frequented by the staff of the exploitation, the equivalent dose rates, due mainly to thermal neutrons, are relatively small (< 30 mSv/h). However, there are some points within the containment building in which the spectra are less thermalised, where values of 300 mSv/h are reached.

Full textThe renewal of documentation about the preventive archaeology dynamism, as well as the systematic recovery of datas from old or unpublished excavations have resulted in a fresh perspective at the Middle Bronze Age of the upper Rhine’s south plain. The corpus, joined in this work, gives varied datas (metallic, resinous objects, pottery), from various sources (settlements, graves, deposits, isolated objects), which is not limited to Haguenau’s cemeteries, anymore. Metallic materials and pottery had been examined individually. The determined typology, combined with statistical analysis show seven stages since the end of the Early Bronze Age (BA III/Bz A2b) to the beginning of Late Bronze Age (BF 1/Bz D2). The middle phase of the Middle Bronze Age (end of BM I-beginning of BM II/Bz B2-C1) remains uncleared and seems not to be in the Upper Rhine. The correlation with well-known absolute dates in the Upper Rhine comes to a time interval between 1600 and 1300 Before J-C, approximately. During the first stage, the interactions are located in the South of Baden-Württemberg, in the Swabian Alb and in the western Switzerland. Then, interactions continue to intensify, become more diverses towards the North, near the Middle Rhine

The Early Iron Age (750-450 BCE) marks a time in the European Alpine Region in which cultural ideologies surrounding bronze objects and bronze production were changing. Iron was becoming the preferred material from which to make many utilitarian objects such as weapons and agricultural tools; this change can be clearly seen in the different treatments of bronze object deposits from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. The Early Iron Age hillfort settlement of Sticna in what is now southeastern Slovenia was one of the first incipient commercial centers to take advantage of the new importance placed on iron, conducting trade with Italy, Greece, the Balkans, and northern Europe. This metallurgical study of bronze funerary objects from Sticna identifies construction techniques, use patterns, and bronze metallurgical technologies from the ancient region of Lower Carniola. This information is then used to explore the cultural importance of bronze at Early Iron Age Sticna and to compare the bronze work of Lower Carniola with that of other regions in central Europe and Italy from this time of great change in Iron Age Europe.

Full textDuring the second part of the Middle Bronze Age, between, XVth and beginning of the XIIIth century BC, many bronze bracelets, anklets, pins and torcs are produced and buried in the northern part of Atlantic Europe, mainly within hoards. This constitutes a peculiar moment, in which this hoard phenomenon evolves, particularly through a significant increase of the buried and immersed metallic mass. If it is evidently consistent with a strong increase of the production, it does not completely explain the plethoric quantity of bronze objects removed from the economic circulation.Through the detailed inventory of bronze ornaments and their typo-technologic classification, but also their spatial and statistics analysis, it has been showed that the ornament typological attribution required being as accurate as other object categories, providing crucial information about cultural interpretation. This revised classification identifies 14 types of pin, 2 of torcs and 27 of bracelets and anklets. These types form the major part of Middle Bronze Age 2 bronze ornament production yet discovered in Atlantic France, including imitating productions and importations from neighbouring areas.Concerning the technological aspect, one of the main contributions of this research is the demonstration of the predominant use of lost-wax-casting technique in the production of plain bracelets and anklets. A technique of wax slicing has been highlighted: clear examples from Bignan and Trégueux hoards indicate that strips and coils were cut in a wax drafts then individually curved and decorated, before smelting. This study concerns a wide geographical area, allowing considering different production/diffusion networks. Local specificities have been identified through the presence of types whose area of diffusion is clearly restricted/which have a restricted area of diffusion or by the hoard composition distinguishable from the neighbouring areas.Several groups are identified at a regional scale, characterized by the burying of a certain type of ornaments whose morphology and ornamentation are specific of a distinct area. The precise typo-technological analysis identify/allows to identify productions which are preferentially deposited in a specific area, but also to recognize the possible importations, affinities and influences visible through ornaments. Interactions between these groups have been estimated at different scales, allowing clarifying the outlines of the Atlantic space.Long-distance trades have been detected during Middle Bronze Age through the importation of materials (Baltic amber, Middle East glass, etc.), but also ornaments, particularly visible between Atlantic France, the South of England, Luneburg and Schleswig-Holstein. If it is not possible to reconstruct precisely the nature of these trades, it could be tempting to interpret them in terms of people circulation, maybe by matrimonial exchanges. Ornaments are often use in this context in modern or ancient societies. Finally, bronze ornaments are proven to be excellent indicators for the study of Atlantic Middle Bronze Age societies. This research has contributed to a better understanding of this period from a cultural, socio-economic, technical and symbolic matter

Full textIn the introduction, we first defined the subject to be dealt with, then we presented the criteria that we used in order to select our data and the conceptual frame involved to treat them. Finally, we gave a brief account of the previous works which happened to be related to the subject, and we summarized the main features of the periods involved. Most of the work was devoted to the critical analysis of the selectd data, which were scattered among 13 sites through the whole country (t. Abu hawam, t. Eladjoul, ashdod, t. Beit mirsim, bethel shemesh, t. El-far'ah, t. Halif, hazor, jerocho, megiddo, t. Nagila, ta'anach). In the sunthesis, as a result, we were able to define the main features of the private houses in palestine during the second millenium that is, the way they were included in the settlement, their structure, their shape, their measurements, the way people circulated in them, how they were roofed and lit. Also we related them to the earlier and later houses in the country, in order to draw the outlines of a common evolution. Then we compared them to other kinds of buildings with which they were associated in the settlements (palaces, temples, granaries. . . ) in order to show that they could not be mistaken for any other type of architecture. Finally, we tried to determine what was their function

This doctoral thesis focus in archaeozoologial and taphonomical study of animal assemblages recovered in El Mirador cave (Sierra de Atapuerca, Burgos). These assemblages were originate were originated during the utilization of the cave like livestock enclosure during Neolithic (VI-IV millennium cal. BC) and Bronze Age. Results of this work confirm early adoption of husbandry practices in the Spanish Meseta. Sheep and goat were de base of this economical system and cattle was exploited too. Milk and meat were used and, during Bronze Age, cattle were also employed like drought animal. We observed economical changes during IV millennium and during Bronze Age, when the importance of cattle increased and the importance of ovicaprino decreases. This patterns was liked with an economical diversification documented at Mediterranean level. El Mirador was occupied like enclosure during winter. Small-scale herd movements would be developed during summer time. This thesis also includes four scientific papers based in different aspects of El Mirador cave assemblages and one methodological study of ovicaprine perinatal bone identification.

Full textThis doctoral thesis is framed within the study of Late Prehistory of South-East Iberia, specifically focused on the Argaric Horizon (2200-1550 cal ANE); the research line of Bastida-UAB Project from the Prehistory Department of Autonomous University of Barcelona. The Argaric period implies important economic, technologic and social changes manifested in social hierarchy, economic inequality, proliferation of metallurgy and institutionalization of violence. Stone tools are an important testimony of productive activities. Their inorganic composition guarantees, in most cases, a good preservation level compared to perishable materials. Besides, their definition as means of production favors their wider representation in the archaeological record, unlike consumer goods. On an analytical level, these artifacts can be explored through three expression perspectives, a system that has been used to structure this dissertation. The theoretical approaches, objectives and general structure are described in chapter 1. The object of this study of this essay is the lithic artifact record of three settlements of the Region of Murcia: La Bastida, Tira del Lienzo (Totana) and Puntarrón Chico (Beniaján). In a novel way, we include the study of a representative sample of the constructive materials of the structures from La Bastida and Tira del Lienzo. Chapter 2 is dedicated to the geographic location and descriptions of the characteristics of each settlement, their documented spaces and chronological sequence, and a general presentation of the analyzed record. On chapter 3, the delimitation of the sources of the raw materials is defined. The interpretative objective is to determine the value of production of the artifacts in connection with the labor invested into provisioning their geologic foundation. The chapter is structured through the petrographic determination from archaeological and geological samples identified in La Bastida. These samples serve as a reference to the geological identification of the archaeological materials. The provenance analysis is made through a geomorphological description of the primary sources and the geological prospection of secondary deposits. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the research of the ecofacts from La Bastida and Tira del Lienzo. Their examination is addressed from three analytic perspectives: supplying and preparation of the materials, selective use according to technic and architectonic features, and evolution of constructive strategies and techniques during the different occupation phases of the settlements. Chapter 5 brings forward the data referring to morphometric and functional analysis. The study is focused on the description and interpretation of the morphometric and traceology variables of the artifacts. In this section, the results from a sequence of analysis of organic and inorganic residues are presented. This data includes X-Ray diffraction spectroscopy (XDS), phytoliths and starch analysis, mass-selective detection in gas chromatography (GC/MS) and the mineralogic determination obtained by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The interpretative outcome of these tests intends to infer new conclusions about the resulting productivity from technological processes. In chapter 6 the chrono-spatial analysis of the tools is examined. To get a closer look at the economic structure provided by archaeological contexts, the information is organized by the economic markers of the different activities, regarding their diversity, dominance, and ubiquity. As a conclusion, chapter 7 offers a synthesis of the results obtained in each step of the research. In this integration, the economic dynamic of La Bastida and Tira del Lienzo is interpreted in an explicative manner, making special emphasis on the relationship that existed between both settlements and the role they performed in their territory.

Full textThe aim of this study was to characterize the practice of deposition of artefacts in wet places in France and its variation in time and space, through quantitative and homogeneous data. This work is based upon a corpus of 2550 Bronze Age metal objects (the Chalcolithique period and the beginning of the Iron Age are also taken into account). This extensive sample allows us to restrict the issues caused particularly by the mobility of the fluvial context. Global characteristics at a national scale are initially identified: a limited range of objects are deposited, while variations are observed during the Bronze Age; their condition reveals a distinctive treatment. The chronological distribution shows a pattern which is specific to this practice of deposition. Some divergences are noticed between the deposits made in rivers and those made in bogs and marshes, suggesting a potentially different outcome between these environments. Using a regional scale parallels are then drawn, which allows us to acutely observe the variations in the mode of deposition between different areas: the selection of the deposited artefacts can vary but so can the frequency of deposition. Some recurring patterns are observed in most regions and are also seen in other neighbouring countries: they suggest the existence of a shared ideology between many european communities. Several interpretations are proposed to explain these deposits. Some periods of discontinuity can be considered as moments of transformation in the tradition of immersion and/or their outcome
