Abstract:
Reclaiming the Enlightenment: Toward a Politics of Radical Engagement, Stephen Eric Bronner, New York: Columbia University Press, 2004, pp. xiii, 181.I am very sympathetic to the project that Stephen Eric Bronner undertakes in this book. As someone inspired by the progressive potential of the Enlightenment, I find myself constantly on the defensive in a world deeply suspicious of the dead white men of eighteenth-century Europe. So I welcome a vigorous and uncompromising defence of those men and the ideals and values they stood for. For those of us who already see ourselves as working to further that tradition, this book is an inspiring call to keep up the good work. But for those who have been hesitant in their enthusiasm for the Enlightenment, this book will be more like a red flag waved in their face, confirming many of their suspicions of Western rationalism. Theorists of recognition, identity, post-colonialism, post-modernism, republicanism, communitarianism, post-secularism and multiple-modernities, are just some of the people who will not find this book very congenial. Ultimately, Bronner's uncompromising defence of the Enlightenment is less successful than it might have been.

Abstract:
Abstract ‘Indispensability’ is the central concept underpinning the treatment of refusal to deal claims under Article 102 TFEU. Since its adoption in Magill and Bronner, however, the conventional wisdom that instances of refusal to deal constitute an abuse only in the presence of indispensability has been challenged from multiple directions. This article surveys the departures from the orthodoxy that can be found in the jurisprudence. In doing so, it measures the purported explanations for such derogations against the justifications for restraint encapsulated in the indispensability concept. Finally, it asks whether the weight of exceptions may reach the point of overwhelming, or ‘dispensing with,’ the original rule.

Abstract:
INOscar Bronner GmbH&Co. KG v. Mediaprint Zeitungs- und Zeitschriftenverlag GmbH&Co. KG and others (Case C-7/97, [1999] 4 C.M.L.R. 112), the European Court of Justice has clarified the scope of the application of the “essential facilities” doctrine to EC competition law. The Commission defined an “essential facility” as a “facility or infrastructure without access to which competitors cannot provide services to their customers” (B&I Line plc v. Sealink Harbours Ltd., Commission Decision of 11 June 1992, [1992] 5 C.M.L.R. 255 at paragraph 41). Under the doctrine, a dominant undertaking that owns or controls such a facility and refuses, without an objective justification, to make it available to competitors–or makes it available on discriminatory terms–abuses its position of dominance.

Saldivar, J. R., J. W. Sechrist, C. E. Krull, S. Ruffins, and M. Bronner-Fraser. "Dorsal hindbrain ablation results in rerouting of neural crest migration and changes in gene expression, but normal hyoid development." Development 124, no. 14 (July 15, 1997): 2729–39. http://dx.doi.org/10.1242/dev.124.14.2729.

Full text
Abstract:
Our previous studies have shown that hindbrain neural tube cells can regulate to form neural crest cells for a limited time after neural fold removal (Scherson, T., Serbedzija, G., Fraser, S. E. and Bronner-Fraser, M. (1993). Development 188, 1049–1061; Sechrist, J., Nieto, M. A., Zamanian, R. T. and Bronner-Fraser, M. (1995). Development 121, 4103–4115). In the present study, we ablated the dorsal hindbrain at later stages to examine possible alterations in migratory behavior and/or gene expression in neural crest populations rostral and caudal to the operated region. The results were compared with those obtained by misdirecting neural crest cells via rhombomere rotation. Following surgical ablation of dorsal r5 and r6 prior to the 10 somite stage, r4 neural crest cells migrate along normal pathways toward the second branchial arch. Similarly, r7 neural crest cells migrate primarily to the fourth branchial arch. When analogous ablations are performed at the 10–12 somite stage, however, a marked increase in the numbers of DiI/Hoxa-3-positive cells from r7 are observed within the third branchial arch. In addition, some DiI-labeled r4 cells migrate into the depleted hindbrain region and the third branchial arch. During their migration, a subset of these r4 cells up-regulate Hoxa-3, a transcript they do not normally express. Krox20 transcript levels were augmented after ablation in a population of neural crest cells migrating from r4, caudal r3 and rostral r3. Long-term survivors of bilateral ablations possess normal neural crest-derived cartilage of the hyoid complex, suggesting that misrouted r4 and r7 cells contribute to cranial derivatives appropriate for their new location. In contrast, misdirecting of the neural crest by rostrocaudal rotation of r4 through r6 results in a reduction of Hoxa-3 expression in the third branchial arch and corresponding deficits in third arch-derived structures of the hyoid apparatus. These results demonstrate that neural crest/tube progenitors in the hindbrain can compensate by altering migratory trajectories and patterns of gene expression when the adjacent neural crest is removed, but fail to compensate appropriately when the existing neural crest is misrouted by neural tube rotation.

This text presents an overview of the characterization of the first bronze alloys in the Northwest of theIberian Peninsula, from a study of a bronze droplet from Bouca Cova da Moura (Ardegão, Maia, Northof Portugal). This was based on the interpretation of archaeometallurgical results obtained in recentyears. The study references new results from the application of Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) andSource Neutron Scattering (Spallation Neutron Source – ISIS) as well as its importance in developingnew hypotheses about the first bronze metallurgy of the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.

Abstract:
Editors Bronner and Clark collected more than 160 entries in order to compile Youth Cultures in America. The entries in this two-volume set are organized alphabetically and typically range in length from two to six pages. Due to the alphabetical rather than conceptual arrangement, the front matter of each volume includes a “Topic Finder” to assist in navigating the set. In the “Introduction,” the editors provide details for the broad selection of entries that range in scope from very general (“animals”) to extremely specific (“furry fandom”). The editors explain that they “have presented an array of contemporary groups, expressive forms, locations, and social movements and issues that cast youth cultures into relief” (xvii), including entries related to: body and health, music and dance, sports and games, generational classifications, social movements, and problems of youth. Although the majority of entries are concerned with the shared interests of youth, the length of individual entries are not necessarily consistent with their significance to youth culture.

Full text
Abstract:
The reduction of the environmental impact of agricultural activity has stimulated the evaluation of new cultivars tolerant/resistant to fungal diseases within the context of Trentino viticulture. In an alluvial soil, 15 varieties of resistant vines were planted: Aromera, Baron, Bronner, Cabernet Cantor, Cabernet Cortis, Cabernet Carbon, Cabino, Helios, Johanniter, Monarch, Muscaris, Prior, Regent, Solaris, and Souvignier gris. Since 2015 they have been evaluated for nutritional aspects, vegetative-productive balance, quantitative-qualitative parameters of musts and health status. Some cultivars (Cabernet Cortis, Cabino, Helios, and Prior) had an insufficient vegetative development, whilst other varieties presented a balanced or excessive behaviour. Regarding magnesium (Mg), some of these cultivars presented deficiencies, often confirmed by visual analysis, but not always highlighted by leaf analyses (Cabernet Cantor, Cabernet Cortis, and Monarch). For such varieties, Mg supply is recommended. Nonetheless, with the aim of new plantings, the choice of more suitable rootstock combinations should be done. Cabino always showed very highly susceptibility to Plasmopara viticola attack, with an ineffective resistance.
