Abstract:
In October 1900, Edwin and William Kiel were killed outside of Nevada's oldest standing structure in North Las Vegas. Since their death, the Kiel brothers have been analysed by bioarchaeologists and forensic experts. Their ranch, now a historic site, remains the property of the city of North Las Vegas and is a contested space which has seen little development. In this article, we discuss the post-mortem social lives of the brothers within the context of debates about the ranch and the brother's bones which remain separated. How the brothers have taken on various symbolic forms after death and how their bones have not yet been returned to the site are examined. We document the ways the brothers have been used rhetorically as tools by the living as they have debated the future of the ranch. We argue that the brother's bones, even in their absence, are effective tools in ongoing political debates. This article provides an example of how absent bodies, or bodies out of place, can serve as secondary agents. Additionally, the study provides bioarchaeologists with a narrative of how the dead are more than tools but may unexpectedly alter human behaviour.

Abstract:
This article explores borders, border crossings and the geography of separation in two recent Hungarian films. In The Maiden Danced to Death (2011) and The Notebook (2013), two films produced within a few years of one another and just before the recent re-erection of a border between Hungary and its neighbors, escape provides the vehicle for the brothers’ separation. Of particular interest is the frequent portrayal of brothers separated during communism, often with one brother staying and one leaving. In these films, regimes and ideology tear brothers apart; whether viewed on screen or only alluded to, the crossing of a border becomes a physical symbol of this separation and loss. The fraternal pairs’ personal lives interact with history, especially the repressive state as manifested in Hungary’s border. Geocriticism, border and trauma studies perspectives will help understand the anguish of this separation. In these films, political realities fray the bonds between brothers and lead to their separation through the border, or to its trace, as identities are subjected to traumatic reconfigurations.

Abstract:
AbstractWhen Esarhaddon named his successors, he split the empire between two of his sons, with Assurbanipal as king of Assyria and Šamaš-šuma-ukīn as king of Babylonia. This arrangement functioned until 652 BCE, at which point a civil war began between the brothers. The war ended with Assurbanipal’s victory and Šamaš-šuma-ukīn’s death in 648 BCE. While Šamaš-šuma-ukīn’s death is mentioned in several of Assurbanipal’s inscriptions, it is still unclear how the king of Babylon met his end, and scholars have suggested theories ranging from suicide, assassination, execution, and accidental death. By offering a reexamination of the evidence for royal death in general and Šamaš-šuma-ukīn’s demise in particular, this article explores how possibly taboo topics such as fratricide, regicide, and suicide were depicted in Neo-Assyrian state texts and how Assurbanipal appears to have coped with his brother’s rebellion and death, especially as compared to Assyrian treatments of belligerent and rebellious foreign kings. This article argues that the relative silence around Šamaššuma- ukīn’s death is due to the fact that, while he was an enemy combatant, he was nonetheless a member of the Assyrian royal family and a legitimately-installed king. Overall, this article concludes that Assurbanipal uses several rhetorical strategies to distance himself from Šamaš-šuma-ukīn, especially invoking deus ex machina as a way to avoid even the potential accusation of fratricide and ultimately erasing his brother from the written record and Assyrian history.

Although the reform implemented by the Gracchus brothers failed, it is still of great historical importance because it reveals the corrupted nature of Roman republic while taking the socioeconomic background into consideration to predict the downfall Rome. The downfall of the Gracchi brothers was primarily resulted from the majority of the senators whose interests were against the reform measures because the benefits for the majority were built on the lost of the senators. Abstract:
A 32 year old man with no previous medical history suffered a sudden cardiac death. Post mortem examination revealed circumferential fibro-fatty infiltration of the left ventricular myocardium. Histological appearance was characteristic of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia but unusual for its localisation only to the left ventricle. As a result of this sudden cardiac death the family of the deceased was screened for cardiac disease. A brother of the index case was 36 years old and free of cardiac history and symptoms. Cardiac investigations revealed a functionally and electrically abnormal left ventricle with apparent sparing of the right ventricle. The brothers may have a left sided form of arrhythmogenic ventricular dysplasia and illustrate the importance of screening family members of young victims of sudden cardiac death.

Abstract:
Here we present the paleopathological profiles of two young adult males, identified as brothers through ancient DNA analysis, who were buried together beneath the floor of an elite early Late Bronze Age I (ca. 1550–1450 BC) domestic structure at the urban center of Megiddo (modern Israel). Both individuals displayed uncommon morphological variants related to developmental conditions, and each exhibited extensive bone remodeling consistent with chronic infectious disease. Additionally, one brother had a healed fracture of the nose, as well as a large square piece of bone cut from the frontal bone (cranial trephination). We consider the potential etiologies for the appearance of the skeletal anomalies and lesions. Based on the bioarchaeological context, we propose that a shared epigenetic landscape predisposed the brothers to acquiring an infectious disease and their elite status privileged them enough to endure it. We then contextualize these potential illnesses and disorders with the trephination procedure. The infrequency of trephination in the region indicates that only selected individuals could access such a procedure, and the severity of the pathological lesions suggests the procedure was possibly intended as curative to deteriorating health. Ultimately, both brothers were buried with the same rites as others in their community, thus demonstrating their continued integration in society even after death.

Abstract:
I am here interested in presenting a comparative analysis between the strand of thought known as ‘Degeneration Theory’ and Dostoevsky’s last major novel, The Brothers Karamazov. I will provide a brief contextualization about the influence of Degeneration Theory on Russian thought, postulating that the principal Russian preoccupation concerning degenerate attitudes – above all in Dostoevsky - consists in the disease of moral nihilism. I proceed by outlining the criminal type in The Brothers Karamazov by focalizing my inquiry around the figure of the illegitimate epileptic brother Smerdjakov. My main arguments around the question of social and physiological degeneration will be developed in the subsection devoted to the relationship between poverty and children, whose humility, it is argued, represents Dostoevsky’s answer to the death of God and the moral bankruptcy enacted by nihilistic tendencies. In the third segment I will analyse the maddening outcomes of this disease in my discussion of Ivan Karamazov. Lastly, I will venture into a more unreserved discussion about the purported sequel to The Brothers Karamazov. This study seeks to emphasize the importance in the relationship between characters and the God question, ultimately claiming that for Dostoevsky physical degeneration is deployed as a physiological counterpart for the chief concern of many degenerationist narratives: the spiritual degradation of the individual soul and of the integrity of civilization.

Abstract:
BackgroundThere is conflicting evidence on the associations between participation in vigorous sports, health habits, familial factors and subsequent mortality. We investigated all-cause mortality and health-related behaviour among former elite athletes and their brothers.MethodsThe mortality of Finnish male former elite athletes, who had represented Finland between 1920 and 1965 (n=900) and their age-matched brothers (n=900), was followed from the time when athlete started an elite athlete career until 31 December 2015. The age-adjusted HRs were calculated by a paired Cox proportional hazards model. In 2001, surviving participants (n=199 athletes and n=199 age-matched brothers) reported their self-rated health (SRH), physical activity, alcohol consumption and smoking habits in the questionnaire.ResultsDuring the total follow-up period, 1296 deaths (72% of the cohort) occurred. The age-adjusted HRs for all-cause mortality in former athletes was 0.75 (95% CI 0.65 to 0.87, P<0.001) compared with their age-matched brothers. Median age at death was 79.9 years for endurance, 75.9 years for mixed sports and 72.2 years for power sports athletes, and 77.5, 73.7 and 72.2 years for their age-matched brothers, respectively. In 2001, compared with their brothers, former athletes smoked less (P<0.001), were more physically active (P<0.05) and rated their health more often as very good (P<0.05).ConclusionsFormer elite athletes are more physically active, smoke less, have better self-rated health and live longer than their brothers. Genetic differences between athletes and brothers, aerobic training for endurance elite sports and a healthier lifestyle may all contribute to reduced mortality.

This article investigates Ācārya Hemacandra‘s 12th-century Sanskrit Triṣaṣṭiśalākāpuruṣacarita (―The Lives of the Sixty-Three Illustrious Men,‖ TŚPC) to understand how Jain authors depict fraternal love as a durable and covert fetter to the world of transmigratory rebirth and re-death (saṃsāra). By examining the stories of the half-brother baladevas and vāsudevas in the TŚPC, the article identifies three consequentially negative characteristics of fraternal relationships: youthful intimacy, inseparability, and emotional turmoil resulting from the relationship‘s dissolution. Finally, the article examines how the figure of the dispassionate Jina in the TŚPC exemplifies the proper orientation towards brothers.

Abstract:
Alfred Lord Tennyson was the most loved and acclaimed poet of the Victorian Era. He was born on 06 August 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire, England. He belonged to an influential family as his father was a clergyman having a large family. Alfred Lord Tennyson had 11 siblings and he showed his interest for writing in his early age. When he was merely thirteen years old, he wrote a 6000-line poem in epic style. His father was suffering from mental breakdowns and had an addiction for alcoholism. One of Tennyson’s brothers would quarrel with his father and another was sent to mental asylum. One more brother had opium addiction like T.S. Eliot. Tennyson entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1827 and he wrote Poems by Two Brothers in collaboration with his brother there. Tennyson had close friendship with Arthur Henry Hallam and both of them went to Europe tour in 1830 and 1832. Tennyson wrote an elegy In memoriam on Hallam’s death. He dedicated some of his poem to Hallam. He published Poems Chiefly Lyrical in 1830 and then Poems in 1832. People criticized these books and consequently he did not write for nine years. He got emotionally attached with Emily Sellwood. He rose to fame in 1942 and when his elegy published in 1850, he became the most popular poet of England. He became the Poet Laureate of England after the death of William Wordsworth and when Samuel Rogers refused this offer. He got married with Emily Sellwood. He died on October 6, 1892 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Present paper is an attempt to analyse Tennyson’s selected poems from multiple angles.

Abstract:
We report a family with heterozygous deletion of exons 3–6 of the LMNA gene. The main presentation of affected family members was characterized by ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias, atrioventricular (AV) block and sudden cardiac death (SCD) but also by severe dilative cardiomyopathy (DCM). We report on two siblings, a 36-year-old female and her 40-year-old brother, who suffer from heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction, AV conduction delays and premature ventricular complexes. Their 65-year-old mother underwent heart transplantation at the age of 55 due to advanced heart failure. Originally, the LMNA mutation was detected in one of the uncles. This index patient and three of his brothers died of SCD as well as their father and aunt. The two siblings were treated with implanted defibrillators in our specialized tertiary heart failure center. This case report places this specific genetic variant in the context of LMNA-associated familial DCM.

Abstract:
Abstract In tribute to Allison Busch, who did so much to restore the reputation of vernacular literature not just as poetry but also as history, Talbot offers an account of an obscure Rajput warrior from Bikaner who decided it would be better to die. In asking why Ramsingh Kalyanmalot sought death in 1577, we must address the larger issue of the changes wrought on the Rajput world by the expanding power of the Mughal empire, one of the main questions that Busch probed in her research. Vernacular texts composed at Rajput courts not only provide a valuable alternate perspective on the power dynamics of the Mughal era, as Busch repeatedly pointed out, but can also cast light on the lives of locally powerful men who hardly figure in imperially sponsored Persian histories. In Dalpat Vilas, a prose biography composed in Marwari, we witness the dilemma of Ramsingh, a second son who was caught between his older brother, the Bikaner Raja and obedient Mughal servant, and his younger brothers, occasional bandits who wandered freely. Their story illustrates how competing loyalties and priorities could strain brotherly bonds, especially in times of political turmoil.

Abstract:
Elders are more likely to confront the death of a sibling than any other kinship bereavement. Yet we know almost nothing about the impact of sibling deaths on older adults. We used attachment theory to generate hypotheses about the impact of this life event on physical health, mood, social support, and economic outcomes in late life. At the Duke University site of a large multi-center epidemiologic study (EPESE), 3173 elderly community-dwellers provided data on bereavements experienced in the past year as well as on demographic, health-related, and socioeconomic characteristics. Bereaved siblings were more functionally and cognitively impaired than bereaved friends and rated their overall health as worse than bereaved spouses or bereaved friends who were similarly impaired. Brothers and sisters bereaved of a brother reported excess financial hardship and mood impairment, respectively. Terminal care programs should screen for excess risk among surviving siblings and plan for assisting these survivors in adaptation to this loss.

Abstract:
The violent end of a human life, especially when it is an end brought about by other human beings, can have an enormous effect on the remembering of events leading up to it as well as on the perception of the aftermath. The socalled War between Brothers is a well-known passage in al-Ṭabarī’s (d. 310/923) Annales that relates the conflict between the half-brothers al-Amīn (d. 198/813) and al-Ma ʾmūn (d. 218/833) over who would succeed their father, the caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd (d. 193/809), resulting in the assassination of then-caliph al‑Amīn in Baghdad in the year 198/813 by al-Ma ʾmūn’s troops. While the reader of this account already knows the outcome, it will be of interest to look closely at the various narrative elements, strategies, and dynamics employed to describe and analyze the last moments of al-Amīn’s life. The focus of this paper is to show how the unfolding of decision-making shapes the composition of this passage and how the end of the story, as well as of al-Amīn’s life, is presented as the result of earlier decisions.

Abstract:
Brothers Miklós Zrínyi (1620–1664) and Péter Zrínyi (1621–1671) were two significant politicians and poets of the early modern Kingdom of Hungary. They not only succeeded each other as Bans of Croatia (one of the highest positions in the Kingdom), but represent a peculiar chapter in the history of European Baroque literature. Both authors wrote a heroic epic about the history of the siege of Szigetvár in 1566, and the tragic death of their great-grandfather, Miklós Zrínyi. In the nineteenth century, they turned into important figures of the identity discourses in both Croatia and Hungary. This article focuses on two areas where different visions manifested and where the changes in the visions can be documented: the different versions of the genealogy of the family and the linguistic and ideological differences between the two epic poems. Their originally common agendas diverged over time. Péter abandoned his first attempt at translating the epic (which would have closely followed the Hungarian version in many respects), and instead his finished version reflects his new linguistic-poetic agenda, which aimed at the unification and standardization of Croatian dialects. After the death of Miklós, he replaced the legends of Northern descent (propagated by his brother), with those of Illyria. Both revisions served the same aim. Instead of reforming the Hungarian political system, they aimed at establishing an imagined Illyrian community, which shows how these seventeenth-century baroque literary genealogies and epic poems can be seen as precursors to nineteenth century national ideologies.

Abstract:
The article reveals how the writer’s personal drama was reflected in his novel “The Brothers Karamazov.” The unexpected death of their three-year-old son on May 16, 1878 was a tragic shock for the Dostoevskys. The causes of his death have not yet been clarified: there is no critical analysis of documentary sources, no diagnosis has been made, the described symptoms (fever, diarrhea, vomiting) may be related to several childhood diseases, family legends about the disease are unreliable. Dostoevsky’s pilgrimage to the Optina Hermitage had a personal reason along with his creative interest in the plot of the new novel. The writer sought to say goodbye to the earthly life of baby Alexey on the fortieth day of his death at Optina, but he was late. During the trip, Dostoevsky had an important conversation with Vladimir Solovyov, in which the writer revealed the idea of his future novel: the Church “as a positive social ideal.” After Dostoevsky’s pilgrimage to the Optina Hermitage, his novel took final shape. The thanatological motifs in the work include scenes in the monastery, Ivan Karamazov’s “collection” of facts, the death of elder Zosima, the illness and death of his brother Markel, Ilyusha Snegirev, and other heroes. These motifs play a key role in forming the poetic idea of the novel. The thanatological theme of the novel has Easter significance. Dostoevsky wrote a novel in which he not merely describe an event, he articulated the meaning of being: in the person of Alexey Fyodorovich Karamazov, he resurrected his son in the name and prototype of the deceased Alexei Fyodorovich Dostoevsky. With every proclamation and glorification of the hero, Dostoevsky proclaimed the immortality of his son.

In 1437, George kept the royal castle of Carașova in present-day Romanian Banat (Hungarian: Krassófő, Serbian: Karaševo) as an honour, which proves that he already had a significant position in the borderline Caraș (Krassó) County at that time. In the Hungarian and Romanian historiography, it is considered that the brothers originate from a Serbian noble family from the territory of Albania. It is interesting that two Serbian annals mention a certain Vukašin Zuprović as a prominent participant in the Hungarian campaign against the Ottomans in Serbia in 1437. The civil war in Hungary after the death of King Albert (1439) favoured the further rise of the Arbanas brothers. As a supporter of King Wladislas I and John Hunyadi, George reached the position of the count of Timiş (Temes) in 1441–1442. Vukašin was given a significant role in the management of Timiş County, as some kind of his brother’s representative. The offspring of George and Vukašin built their careers on the southern border of Hungary during the reign of Matthias Corvinus. In the late 1480s, George the Younger performed the duty of the captain or the ban of Belgrade, while Vukašin’s son Peter was the captain of the Haram castle on the Danube in Caraș County (1489).

Abstract:
This paper is part of a major prosopography project which is nearing completion. The project traced around 600 sisters, brothers and benefactors of Syon Abbey ca. 1400-1600. Their names were recorded by the community in three obit lists: the Cambridge obit list ca. 1451 was copied into the second, the Syon Martiloge (BL Add MS 22285), in the 1470s. The third was copied from the Martiloge in Lisbon ca. 1608. The Lisbon obit list contains new information unused by earlier historians. Five lists of names provide snapshots of the community in 1428, 1539, 1557, 1587 and 1622. Short biographies based on other sources reveal family background, social status, education and book ownership. Collectively they tell the story of Syon Abbey's first two centuries. This paper is about the Syon brothers: 164 have been traced and their names are all published here. St. Birgitta of Sweden (1303-1373) founded her Order of St Saviour for nuns as part of a wider movement for reform and renewal in the late medieval church. The Birgittines spread rapidly in northern Europe ca. 1400. Each Birgittine monastery had a house for up to 60 sisters living enclosed contemplative lives and a smaller house for 25 brothers. Their role was to provide the sacraments for the sisters and the community’s patrons and pilgrims. Syon Abbey was the only Birgittine house in England, founded near London by the Lancastrian king Henry V in 1415. It went on to commemorate the Yorkist and Tudor dynasties and had links with the Stuarts. It was important for its proximity to royal power during the Hundred Years’ War, the Wars of the Roses and the Reformation. The Birgittines of Syon Abbey were renowned for their holiness and learning and their resistance to Henry VIII’s Reformation. Syon priest St. Richard Reynolds was martyred at Tyburn in 1535 and Lay Brother Thomas Brownell in Newgate Gaol in 1537. Syon was dissolved in 1539, but the Birgittines divided into groups and continued to follow the Rule, some in exile. In 1559 the whole community went into exile, enduring poverty and warfare in the Low Countries and France. Two sisters died in prison and three brothers were captured by pirates before settling in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1594. Syon Abbey was significant in forging English Roman Catholic identity and inspiring the revival of religious orders in Europe. Scholars have made two main assumptions about the brothers which are countered by prosopographical analysis: firstly medieval Syon attracted steady numbers from foundation by Henry V to dissolution by Henry VIII; secondly numbers declined rapidly from 1539 until they died out in the 1600s. The early death of the founder, and Henry VI’s transfer of patronage elsewhere reduced funding and prestige. Recruitment dwindled until Edward IV refounded Syon in 1461. Medieval Syon’s fame is based on the achievements of the Yorkist era. There were fewer brothers after 1539 and fewer sisters, but the brothers were vital to Syon’s survival as a house of enclosed nuns. In St. Birgitta’s Rule the brothers were 30% of the community. At Syon they reached ca. 20-25%, 1420-1594. After 1600 the brothers continued their work as ca. 10% of the community until 1695.

Abstract:
Several interactions occur between inflammation and thrombosis that become more apparent with ageing. It is a two-way process: inflammation promotes aggregation and coagulation, while activated platelets and coagulation factors or peptides promote inflammation by several mechanisms. Recent evidence points to the role played by platelets and possibly coagulation factors in the regulation of innate immunity. Physiological anticoagulant pathways also have anti-inflammatory properties. This strong interdependence has an evolutionary origin. Current viewpoints are that inflammation, and thus coagulation, have a role in ageing. ‘Inflamm-ageing’ is a neologism that denotes a low-grade inflammation that accompanies healthy ageing, but can evolve towards excessive inflammation and clotting. It can thus be associated with thrombosis and early death. These fascinating pathophysiological discoveries provide novel targets for the development of new, potentially efficacious antithrombotic drugs.

Strong individual traits influence humans to become a person who loves himself. The desire to actualize oneself and provide self-satisfaction results in becoming a more self-centered person. As a result something that is not in accordance with itself, people will tend to be angry or hate others because it does not match what he expected. Loving is not a new thing or command. Filadefia is a city built by a brother and given to his brother. Whereas the Philadelphian church mentioned in Revelation kitan is a faithful and diligent church obeying God's commands. Although the congregation does not have great strength in the midst of persecution that suppresses it, but his love for God shows faith and faithfulness to do God's commands. In writing, you often use the word Agape rather than philio. In this case John asserts that the command to love you proves that he is a follower of Jesus. Being a follower or disciple of Jesus means staying in God moving from death. Staying in God means following all the commands of God means not hating one another. It is not easy to carry out God's command to love you but on the basis of agape love that is the sacrifice of Jesus Christ who gave His life for friends, brothers and also called children of God. Give an example that every believer must do so that the designation of brothers, friends and children of God clearly makes a difference with the children of Satan and also proves the believer's obedience to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Abstract:
The article examines the perception of biographies and heritage of the brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt in National Socialist Germany. In the historical memory of modern Germany, their images have become one of the bases of German national identity, and the Humboldt-Forum – a platform for the connection of science and culture. In collective memory of the Third Reich, the brothers held unequal positions. The 100th anniversary of the death of W. von Humboldt caused a surge of interest in him, but his image was reformatted and inscribed in the racial parameters of Nazism: his interest in the issues of the German nation was emphasized, his commitment to liberal ideas was explained by criticism of absolutism, attempts were made to attract his image to Nazi anti-Semitic paradigm. However, there were some researchers of his heritage who retained scientific objectivity. Alexander von Humboldt was paid much less attention: the ideologists of the Third Reich hated his cosmopolitanism. But as he was the brother of W. von Humboldt and a world-famous scientist, it was impossible to forget about his merits. The collective memory kept an image of a traveler naturalist whose greatness the Third Reich did not deny. Commemoration is closely associated to the identity formation. For the construction of national identity in National Socialist Germany their images were practically not required.

Abstract:
Research objectives: To trace the fate of the sixteenth-century aristocrats from the Mansur kin of the Crimean Manghits, namely the brothers Baki, Khoja-Akhmed, Ak-Bibi, and Divei. To identify their role in political events in Eastern Europe and to establish the circumstances of the capture, stay in captivity, and the death of Divei – the most famous of these brothers. Research materials: Chronicles, Razriad books, diplomatic documents, folklore, and secondary materials of historical research. Results and novelty of the research: The author traced the fate of the brothers from the noble Maghit kin of Mansur, namely Baki, Khoja-Akhmed, Ak-Bibi and Divei, three of whom became Qarachi-beks in Crimea. They participated in the political life of Crimea, the Nogai Horde, Astrakhan, Azov, the Russian state, Hungary, and Iran. Prince Divei was a typical steppe bagatur, a seeker of fame and fortune, as well as an active enemy of the Russian State. He repeatedly raided the Russian lands and displayed outstanding abilities as a commander. He was aggressive, brave, determined, and cruel. In 1572, he commanded the Crimean troops in the Battle of Molodino and was captured by the Russians. The capture of their commander was one of the reasons for the defeat of the Crimeans. This event once more saved the Russian state from external dependence. Devlet-Girei Khan made considerable efforts to free the Qarachi-bek during the battle, but these were in vain. Attempts to redeem or exchange the prisoner were likewise in vain. Ivan the Terrible was aware of the threat posed by this figure and did not want to free his noble prisoner. In 1576, the death of Prince Divei was announced in Moscow. Historiography calls into question his death in 1575. There is an opinion that Divei was baptized and entered the service of Ivan the Terrible under the name of Daniil-murza. In this article, the author contends that those historians who compared Divei with Daniil-murza approached the issue superficially, not considering all the sources, and therefore came to the wrong conclusions. These began to be repeated in subsequent publications. Prince Divei and Daniil-murza were different persons. Divei did not agree to accept Orthodoxy and was executed. The elimination of the famous military leader from its political life contributed to a decrease in the aggression of the Crimean Khanate towards Russia as well as the destabilization of the political situation in Crimea.

Two Brothers Were born in Budapest before the turn of the century and grew up in that city speaking Hungarian. After they had left Hungary for good, they became assimilated in Austria and Germany. Later, one of them Attila Hörbiger, went on to become one of Nazi Germany's top movie stars, as did his wife Paula Wessely. During the Austrian Second Republic, the two brothers achieved cult figure status in the theater. Fifteen years ago, as Paul Hörbiger lay close to death, he expressed the wish to speak with Attila once again, after so many years, in Hungarian, the language of their childhood. In the final hour of Paul's life, that is what te brothers did.1Regardless of the extent to which this story is, in fact, true, it can nevertheless serve as the leitmotiv for a discussion of ethnic and cultural identity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, providing an indication of the way many Austrians dealt with their ethnic origins or cultural background.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 169 Introduction Approximately half of all patients with sporadic MDS will present with one of the known recurrent genetic alterations including additions/deletions of large chromosomal segments or mutations in single genes. Familial cases of MDS are rare, however, and the mutations that have been identified are not unique to MDS. Here we describe a family in which three of nine siblings were affected with early-onset MDS and a del(20) karyotype (Table 1). One of the brothers progressed to AML and died while the remaining 2 brothers are stable. Methods and Results We performed whole exome sequencing on 2 affected brothers and 2 normal male family members followed by Sanger sequencing. Comparison of non-synonymous mutations common to the 2 brothers with MDS but not found in the normal controls revealed a mutated gene, Dido1, which is located at 20q13.33 upstream of the deleted region in the MDS brothers. The G to A mutation leads to substitution of a bulky basic, polar arginine in place of a small neutral non-polar glycine at amino acid 956 of the protein. This mutation, confirmed by PCR, was present in one allele in both the marrow and T-cells (not part of the MDS clone) of both brothers with MDS (Figure 1) showing that the mutation is not somatic but is, rather, a germline mutation. Since all three affected brothers harbored a del(20), it was of interest to investigate whether other patients with MDS or MDS/MPD and del(20)(q11.2) may also have this specific mutation. DNA from bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNC) of 10 del(20q) patients with either MDS or MDS/MPD was examined by PCR and Sanger sequencing. No mutation was found in any of the samples, suggesting that the mutation is unique to the affected family. BMMNC were available for 16 additional members of this extensive family. PCR followed by sequencing showed that 7/16 members of generation III have the identical heterozygous mutation. Interestingly, while no DNA was available from the brother who died of AML, analysis of his children revealed that 2 sons (III- Q and III-R) carry the mutation, confirming that the father also carried this mutation. Similarly, while DNA from sister II-G was not available for analysis, one of her daughters carries the mutation confirming the presence of mutation in the mother. Discussion Death inducer-obliterator 1 (Dido1) is a putative transcription factor originally identified in a screen for apoptosis related genes in a murine pre-B cell line. The gene encodes three alternate isoforms and gene targeting of all three isoforms in a murine model leads to development of a transplantable myeloid disorder with features similar to MDS/MPN. These studies also showed variable decreased Dido1 expression in a subset of patients with myeloid disorders when compared to healthy controls. Our results support the hypothesis that Dido1 aberrations in hematopoietic stem cells may contribute to MDS evolution. The fact that deletions in the long arm of chromosome 20 are one of the most frequent aberrations found in MDS and clearly was a secondary event in the 3 affected brothers of this family suggests that Dido1 may ontribute to this specific genomic instability. Generation III are still young, but those with the mutation may have an increased susceptibility to myeloid disease and should be clinically followed. Conclusion The identification of the Dido1 mutation in this family suggests a novel pathogenic mechanism for the development of familial MDS. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
On the night of October 5-6, 1971, a strong explosion destroyed the auditorium of the Higher Pedagogical School in Opole. The perpetrator of the outbreak was Jerzy Kowalczyk, a technical worker of this university, who wanted to demonstrate in this way that there were forces in Poland capable of opposing the apparatus of then in power. In retaliation, the communist authorities brought to court both Jerzy Kowalczyk and - on the basis of collective responsibility - his brother Ryszard, a science worker at the Higher Pedagogical School in Opole. Jerzy was sentenced to death and Ryszard to 25 years in prison. However, social protests led to a softening of the punishment against Jerzy Kowalczyk (it was lowered to 25 years in prison). The mythologized version of the events, stubbornly maintained by some circles, claims that the explosion in the auditorium of the Higher Pedagogical School was made by both brothers in order to prevent the ceremony of handing over awards and decorations to the officers of the Citizens’ Militia and the Security Service, who participated in the bloody suppression of the December 1970 workers’ revolt on the Baltic Coast. This version, however, is not confirmed by the preserved historical sources. The communist security apparatus tried to gain operational benefits from the Kowalczyk case by undertaking recruitment activities against both of Jerzy Kowalczyk’s brothers. There is a conspiracy of silence on this subject in the above-mentioned circles.

Abstract:
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Through a discussion of Dostoevsky’s depiction of the death of the staret in Brothers Karamazov I discuss the olfactory channel of communication in religion with the aim in mind to tease apart the underlying ontology pertaining to different forms of religion. The focus is on impurity related to putrefaction in death. Contrary to the understanding represented by the ironic voice of the narrator in Brothers Karamazov, I explore the view holding the saintly person to undergo an olfactory transformation in death changing into a pleasurable aroma and thereby becoming an indexical token of celestial life. From Brothers Karamazov I proceed to examine notions of divine presence and olfactory tokens in ancient Graeco-Roman culture. I use it as a historical foil to analyse Paul’s total twisting of the motif in 2 Cor 2, 14-17 and 4, 7-12 in which he portrays himself and his Christ-message as an indexical putrefaction of Christ. Thus, the title of my essay: “Paul ain’t dead, he just smells funny.” Finally, I discuss the extent to which such an understanding is encompassed by Philippe Descola’s notion of the analogistic ontology.

Jeong, Kang-gil. "Can Gui-Shen(鬼神) be viewed as Li(理) in Neo-Confucianism? - A new theory of Gui-Shen based on the extinction of Qi and the immortal Li -." Yeongnam Toegye Studies Institute 34 (June 30, 2024): 71–105. http://dx.doi.org/10.33213/thlj.2024.0.34.71.

Abstract:
This paper suggests a reexamination and a new understanding of the Gui-Shen(鬼神) theory within Confucian Neo-Confucianism. The text is based on the concept of the extinction of Qi and the immortal Li. Traditional Neo-Confucianism considers Gui-Shen(鬼 神) to be the persisting Qi after death, influenced decisively by Zhu-Xi. In other words, it is believed that responsive Qi continues for a while after human death. This article, after presenting several issues with the existing 'Gui-Shen theory,' proposes an alternative view that considers Gui-Shen as Li. It emphasizes the Chung-brothers(二程)' stance, which sees Gui-Shen as 'traces of harmony(造化之迹),' differing from Zhu-Xi. The Chung brothers never specifically identified Gui-Shen as Qi. Despite negative or vague reservations about Gui-Shen, the academic community readily accepted Zhu-Xi's Gui-Shen theory. However, regarding the dispersion of Qi, the Chung brothers asserted its disappearance, while Zhu Xi believed it could linger for some time after death, revealing a subtle difference in their positions. Nevertheless, both shared the idea that dispersed Qi ultimately ends in nothing with no further explanation. In this paper, 'traces of harmony' are considered as traces left by the dissipation of Qi, attempting a hermeneutic shift that when a human dies, Qi dissipates soon thereafter and remains as 'traces of life', immortalized as Li, representing a past that has passed. In modern terms, this Li can be seen as an information pattern left by a deceased person within the world. The 'Li as the past,' left behind by someone who has departed from this world through the traces of their life, always rides upon the 'Qi of the present moment.' Thus, those who remain can be seen as considering the deceased as if they are still living, projecting their presence forward. Additionally, the 'Li(理)'s Ghost theory attempts to provide a clue to 'overcoming the problem of extinction of existence', left unfinished by the Chung brothers and Zhu-Xi, through 'Li returning to Taiji(太極)'. This connects with <Taiji, which sums up all Li>, rather than Gui-Shen as a posthumous being. The author suggests that the religiosity of Confucianism is not found in ancestral rites for ancestors[Gui-Shen] who exist after death, but rather in the 'non-religious religion' discovered in <daily embodiment of Taiji(太極)/Heavenly principles(天理)>. This proposal aims to align with the core nature of Confucianism while prioritizing 'service to people' over 'service to Gui-Shen' and 'life in this world' over 'after death', reflecting an attempt to better capture Confucius's original intent.

Abstract:
Nikola Tesla and the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, have worked and created in the United States of America in the period comprising the last two decades of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. All three of them were visionaries and creators of the modern technical age. In the Tesla's legacy, apart from his personal and technical items, press clippings, monographic and serial publications, there are also about 156,000 sheets of archival material which cover his entire life and work, both chronologically and thematically. Among these testimonies there are four original documents (a concept of a condolence letter, a copy of the sent condolence letter, a brief gratitude note and a formal invitation) that were exchanged between Nikola Tesla and probably Orville Wright, between 1912 and 1920. The oldest preserved document of their correspondence is the concept of Tesla's condolence letter to Orville Wright on the occasion of the death of his older brother. Two approved patents for the Wright brothers' aircraft model have been preserved as well, which testifies of the scientist's interest in their work and aviation research in general. Researching the correspondence between Nikola Tesla and Orville Wright, as well as the other documents from the scientist's legacy preserved in the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, we have tried to highlight the details of his acquaintance with the Wright brothers, that is, a small fragment of his life and work which has remained almost unknown until today. Results of the research, presented in the form of a scientific research paper, contribute to a better understanding of the aviation history and reveal new details from the life stories of our renowned scientist and the two famous aviation pioneers. The publication of exclusive documents from Tesla's legacy is a contribution to the wider scientific community and a new reference point for all the researchers who are to cover similar topics in the future.

Abstract:
The heritage left by Emperor Ferdinand I was discussed in numerous correspondences between his sons, especially Maximilian and Ferdinand. Maximilian II, as emperor, bore the greatest burden of taking over the inheritance of his late father. Together with the imperial crown, he took over many problems of both a political and financial nature. Fulfilling the last will of the late emperor was not an easy task, as the brothers disagreed on several issues. It was primarily about financial matters. The subject of quite a stormy discussion was primarily the division of income that the brothers were supposed to raise, and their contribution to paying off their father’s debts, which the Habsburgs had to constantly struggle with. Solving this problem was not the easiest thing to do. This was achieved only two years after the death of his father during the convention in Linz, in 1566. In addition, issues related to the maintenance of the archduchess needed to be discussed. It was up to the brothers to take care of the sisters. From the correspondence it is clear that they cooperated with each other, but this cooperation was not the easiest.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores the justification for providing separate experiences for twins. The focus is on Dorothy Burlingham’s (1952; Twins: A study of three sets of identical twins with 30 charts. London, UK: Imago) classic, in-depth study of three identical twin-pairs. Implications for how twins are raised currently will be examined. Reviews are presented of twin research concerning monozygotic twins with maturity-onset diabetes, gene editing of fetal Chinese twins, educational disadvantage of early-born twins, and developmental trajectories of twins’ prenatal movements. Some unusual experiences and situations involving twins that warrant media attention are also summarized. They include twins with nearly identical license plates, a rare case of fetus-in-fetu, twin brothers killed at Pearl Harbor, the death of a 96-year-old twin Holocaust survivor, the accidental death of male–female twin toddlers in a heated car and confusion over identical twin politicians.

Abstract:
Abstract The deaths of family members constitute one of the most serious negative life events experienced in adulthood. The impact of these losses on psychological well-being may differ considerably by the structural relationship between the deceased and the survivors, and by the genders of both family members; however, few studies have been able to explore these variations by generation, gender, and time since death. In this paper, we use mixed-methods data to explore how depressive symptoms are affected differentially in adulthood by the deaths of mothers, fathers, and siblings, as well as by the gender of survivors. We address these questions using data collected from approximately 600 adult children nested within 250 later-life families, in which approximately 55% experienced the death of at least one parent and 15% experienced the death of a sibling in the previous decade. Preliminary multilevel regression analyses showed that deaths of siblings predicted sisters’ but not brothers’ depressive symptoms. In the case of parents, only mothers’ deaths were found to predict daughters’ depressive symptoms, whereas neither parents’ deaths predicted sons’ well-being. Further, these patterns differed little by time since death. Qualitative data revealed that women were more likely to report that both their mothers’ and siblings’ deaths had led to higher conflict within the sibling network, which previous research has shown predicts psychological well-being. Taken together, these findings demonstrate the salient role of gender in shaping well-being in the face of events of deaths of parents and siblings in adulthood.

Abstract:
On a bright day in January 1987, my host in the Awlad ʿAli bedouin community in Egypt in which I had been doing research invited me to accompany him on a con dolence call. He knew how enthusiastic I was about visiting people who stillcamped in traditional tents in the desert, and this set of families, he assured me, lived in a beautiful area. The group's patriarch had died twenty days ago, but my host had been too busy to go so only his younger brothers had paid their respects. He had just heard, though, that the bereaved family was upset he had not come himself. So we drove off in his car, with his two cowives in the back seat, stop ping at the market town nearby to buy a fat sheep to take with us. As they loaded the beast into his car, my host complained about how expensive sheep had be come. The sound of its bleating in the trunk reminded me of trips to weddings, when sheep are also obligatory gifts.

The untimely death of Fernando Arenas on October 30, 2019 has left his partner, mother and brothers, who were by his side at the time, with much pain and an indescribable sense of loss. For his colleagues, his death is a major loss in Lusophone Studies, the field that he helped to forge with unrelenting conviction, generosity and kindness. As I share the outline of a memory that others will want to fill-in, I mourn a close friend and colleague of more than two decades without whom life in Minnesota will never be the same.

Abstract:
Creativity and affect in families with a family member, who is labelled as disabled, is central in this article. These families are often pinned down to individual, closed categories where everything revolves around the label “disability.” Our research goes beyond binary thinking in terms of abled/disabled and other linear explanations by using artistic processes as ethnography. We start from encounters between two people who both created something about their “non-ordinary” brothers. One (first author) made a shortfilm/documentary about her own family, the other (research participant) wrote a TV series about a man who takes care of his brother after their mother’s death, which was not autobiographical yet inspired by his own experiences. The first author distilled etchings from their encounters, which piece together different layers: the scenarist’s biographical story, the story of creating the series, the series’ script and the first author’s thoughts and readings. The concept of re-touche—of touching and being touched, and in this way returning to family fissures and creating something new from them—runs through this art-based project.

Abstract:
In the extensive cast of characters named in Isaeus'On the Estate of Hagniasare two brothers, Chaereleos and Macartatus. The speaker, their brother-in-law, is anxious to impress upon the members of the court that neither was a rich man. ‘You are all my witnesses,’ he asserts, ‘that…they were not in the class of those who perform liturgies but rather of those who possess a modest estate.’ Chaereleos on his death left land worth no more than 3000 drachmas. Macartatus left nothing at all. ‘For you know,’ the speaker reminds his audience, ‘that he sold his land, bought a trireme, manned it, and sailed off to Crete, (you know it) because it was by no means a covert act—indeed, it furnished a topic for discussion in the Assembly, namely that he might cause a state of war instead of peace between us and the Spartans.…It turned out…that he died along with this property of his that he sailed off with. For he lost everything, both the trireme and his life, in the war’.(Is. 11.48–9)

Abstract:
The Catholic perspective on end-of-life care focuses on the value of the individual person, rather than the burden a person nearing death might place on family and health care institutions. In a culture where euthanasia is becoming a more accepted act, the Catholic approach to palliative and hospice care is vital to protecting our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. Abstract:
Popular religious practices such as communicating with the deceased take place in many parts of the world. In cases of death through violence, as in warfare, the living worry about the dead bodies of their loved ones as the lack of bodily remains makes it impossible to perform a proper burial. Vietnam is a valuable case study because it has experienced terrible violence in the 20th century. This article explores the pilgrimage of a group of brothers who searched for the bodily remains of their father in the late 1990s. He operated as a secret agent and was killed in 1957 when he crossed the border into South Vietnam. In their quest, the brothers consulted a ritual expert, who guided them from a distance. Drawing on this case study, the paper argues that filial piety, spirit mediumship, technology, and political history are deeply intertwined in post-revolutionary and late socialist Vietnam.

Abstract:
The names of Appia and Craig are often linked as prophets of the ‘new’ theatre – and as early as 1915 critics were beginning to stake invidious claims as to which was the dominant ‘influence’. In fact, they arrived by separate paths at artistic conclusions some of which were compatible – and some of which reflected their very different temperaments and sense of theatrical priorities. At last, in 1914, the two men met, and until a few years before Appia's death in 1928 conducted an intermittent but intimate correspondence, which has previously been unpublished. Richard C. Beacham, who teaches in the Joint School of Theatre Studies in the University of Warwick, published a study of the relationship between Appia and Jaques-Dalcroze at Hellerau in NTQ 2 and 3, and here provides an illuminating commentary to extensive extracts from the Appia–Craig correspondence. His full-length study of Appia appears in the ‘Directors in Perspective’ series from Cambridge University Press.
