Although the phylogenetic relationship of Western Palearctic brown frogs has been repeatedly studied, the taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationship of Anatolian-Hyrcanian brown frogs is still not fully resolved. Here, we assess the phylogenetic status of these species among Western Palearctic brown frogs with special emphasize on Iranian populations based on two partial mitochondrial DNA sequences (16S rRNA and cytochrome b genes) and the application of a molecular clock. Tadpoles reared at 23.2°C had larger mass at metamorphosis and a longer larval period than tadpoles reared at 25.3 and 28.1°C. We describe a new species of nurse-frog (Aromobatidae, Allobates) from northwestern Brazilian Amazon. Allobates juami sp. nov. is distinguished from similar congeneric species by the combination of the following characters: body-size range (snout-to-vent length 17.5–18.5 mm), lack of dark pigments on ventral surfaces of male specimens, dorsal color pattern (predominantly solid dark brown, but conspicuously light brown over snout and urostyle regions), presence of conspicuous pale dorsolateral and ventrolateral stripes, and presence of a diffuse pale paracloacal mark. Populations of phytotelmic frogs from northern Madagascar assigned to Guibemantis (Pandanusicola) pulcher are known to differ genetically from populations further south in the eastern rainforest belt of the island, but to date, their status has not been analyzed in depth. We combined molecular genetic data with an examination of color pattern to clarify the taxonomy of these frogs. DNA sequences of both mitochondrial and nuclear-encoded genes were consistently differentiated between the northern populations and those occurring further south. Digestion of Rana graeca italica DNA with Asp718I produces highly repetitive fragments of 281 and 385 bp that were cloned and sequenced. The shorter fragment corresponds to the unit repeat (RgiS1b) of a satellite DNA. The longer fragment was found to be part of a 494-bp repeat of another satellite DNA (RgiS1a) that was cloned intact as an EcoRV fragment. RgiS1b is 97% homologous to RgiS1a, from which it seems to be derived by a single deletion. Among all species tested, only the related brown frog Rana dalmatina contained homologous repetitive DNA. AbstractIt is well known that female adults of frog-biting midges (Corethrellidae) are attracted by anuran mating calls. However, the role of host-emitted cues other than mating calls in determining the level of attraction remains poorly understood. Here, we performed field playback experiments to test how the host-seeking behaviour of Corethrella Coquillett is influenced by different sound stimuli: mating call of a tree frog, cricket call, and no sound. Then, after long-distance host detection, we evaluated if Corethrella can distinguish landing sites by using at short distance the colour and
