Abstract:
A new, hydroid-associated representative of the genus Periclimenes from Vietnam is described and illustrated. P. laevimanus sp. nov. is most similar to P. granulimanus Bruce, 1978, but differs from it by the more slender and smooth, not granulated, major second pereiopod and the non-dentate cutting edges of the minor second pereiopod. A new host is reported for P. granulimanus. Mouth parts are described and illustrated for P. brucei Ď uriš, 1990. This species is easily distinguished by its extremely elongate second pereiopods, with the carpus longer than the chela, and the walking legs lacking simple spines proximally from the distoventral series of paired spines. Periclimenes tonga Bruce, 1990 differs from other members of the species group by having only a single pair of dorsal telson spines. A key for the identification of species of the herein established P. granulimanus species group is provided. Types and/or museum specimens of some other Periclimenes species (P. hongkongensis Bruce, 1969, P. nomadophila Berggren, 1994, P. ruber Bruce, 1982, and P. toloensis Bruce, 1969) were examined to evaluate their relationship with the P. granulimanus species complex.

Abstract:
BRUCE/Apollon is a membrane-associated inhibitor of apoptosis protein that is essential for viability and has ubiquitin-conjugating activity. On initiation of apoptosis, the ubiquitin ligase Nrdp1/RNF41 promotes proteasomal degradation of BRUCE. Here we demonstrate that BRUCE together with the proteasome activator PA28γ causes proteasomal degradation of LC3-I and thus inhibits autophagy. LC3-I on the phagophore membrane is conjugated to phosphatidylethanolamine to form LC3-II, which is required for the formation of autophagosomes and selective recruitment of substrates. SIP/CacyBP is a ubiquitination-related protein that is highly expressed in neurons and various tumors. Under normal conditions, SIP inhibits the ubiquitination and degradation of BRUCE, probably by blocking the binding of Nrdp1 to BRUCE. On DNA damage by topoisomerase inhibitors, Nrdp1 causes monoubiquitination of SIP and thus promotes apoptosis. However, on starvation, SIP together with Rab8 enhances the translocation of BRUCE into the recycling endosome, formation of autophagosomes, and degradation of BRUCE by optineurin-mediated autophagy. Accordingly, deletion of SIP in cultured cells reduces the autophagic degradation of damaged mitochondria and cytosolic protein aggregates. Thus, by stimulating proteasomal degradation of LC3-I, BRUCE also inhibits autophagy. Conversely, SIP promotes autophagy by blocking BRUCE-dependent degradation of LC3-I and by enhancing autophagosome formation and autophagic destruction of BRUCE. These actions of BRUCE and SIP represent mechanisms that link the regulation of autophagy and apoptosis under different conditions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The caridean shrimp family Gnathophyllidae currently comprises five genera: Gnathophyllum Latreille, 1819; Gnathophylloides Schmitt, 1933; Pycnocaris Bruce, 1972; Levicaris Bruce, 1973a and Gnathophylleptum d’Udekem d’Acoz, 2001, the last three genera being monotypic (De Grave et al., 2009). The original description of Pycnocaris chagoae Bruce, 1972 was based on a pair of specimens collected in the Chagos Archipelago, central Indian Ocean (Bruce, 1972). Further information on the morphology and colour pattern of P. chagoae as well as its association with the holothurian hosts Holothuria cinerascenes Brandt and Labidodemas rugosum Ludwig was provided by Bruce (1973, 1983). Since the last record by Bruce (1983), no further specimens of P. chagoae have been reported.

Taggart, James Hand. "The historicity of Barbour's 'Bruce'." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2004. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1423/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation systematically evaluates the historicity of the epic poem The Bruce, written towards the end of the fourteenth century and attributed to Archdeacon John Barbour of Aberdeen. For the purposes of analysis, the poem has been divided into 119 discrete episodes, which cover 95 percent of the text. Ninety-one of these appear in other historical sources. A rigorous evaluative methodology establishes a satisfactory level of historicity of these 91 episodes, significantly higher than has been allowed by many critics of the poem. The 28 episodes that do not appear in other sources are assessed by a parallel methodology. The analyses of these two types of episode provide an original rationale for judiciously using The Bruce as a sole source. Using the battle of Bannockburn as a case study, the value of The Bruce as a source is clearly demonstrated. By implication, it may also be regarded as an indispensable source for the 1306-1329 period as a whole. However, a textual analysis of the poem indicates that at least four, and perhaps as many as six, hands were at work in the writing of The Bruce. It is suggested that John Barbour may have been the lead author and editor. The dissertation concludes that The Bruce was written as a historically accurate (insofar as the term was understood in the fourteenth century) account of the part Robert I and his lieutenants played in the War of Independence. It is nationalistic in tone. Its core ideologies are chivalry and freedom of the Scots from English domination. It uses literary devices to make the content accessible, persuasive and memorable. Thus, it may also be regarded as a fundamentally important contribution to Scottish literature.

Abstract:
This essay accounts for the lives of atist couple Carolina Benedicks Bruce (1856-1935) and William Blair Bruce (1859-1906). The perspective emerges from both Griselda Pollock’s theories on female artists as from Yvonne Hirdman’s gender contract. The essay is made out in the form of a biography, with focus on aspects of gender roles, class and identity. The material consists of letters written by the couple and their families, as well as Carolina’s diaries. Carolina Benedicks Bruce was born into the wealthy Benedicks family from Stockholm and Gysinge. At Grez she met William Blair Bruce in 1885. William was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and was sent to France by his family for artistic education in his twenties. They built a home together at Gotland; Brucebo. They conducted themselves liberally to the current norms of gender roles, class and identity aspects of the time. They created their own path, to be able to do what they were passionate about.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Oxide deposits on end-fitting liner tubes and steam generator tubes from the Bruce "A" Nuclear Generating Station (NGS) were characterized in advance of the decontamination of the heat transport system (HTS) of Bruce Unit 2. Oxide loadings, and Co-60 surface activities and specific activities were determined for the oxides on inlet and outlet end-fitting liner tubes from Bruce Unit 1, Bruce Unit 2 and Bruce Unit 4. Oxides on the inner surfaces of steam generator tubes from Bruce NGS Units 1 and 2 were also characterized. The consistency in the deposit characteristics on the inlet liner tubes and steam generator tubes from Bruce "A", along with the absence of magnetite on the outlet liner tubes has led to the development of a model for iron transport in the HTS of pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs). The activity transport/fouling mechanism involves flow-accelerated corrosion of the outlet feeder pipes, followed by deposition of iron in the steam generators, along the inlet feeder pipes, on the inlet end fittings, on the inlet fuel bundles and on the inlet region of the pressure tube. The results of loop experiments using decontamination solutions indicated that the oxide was rapidly removed from inlet liner tubes. However, removal of the Cr-rich oxide from the outlet liner tubes was less efficient, requiring the Alkaline Permangante (AP) oxidizing pre-treatment that is typically used in light water reactors (LWRs), The steam generator tubes were effectively decontaminated.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In October 2006 the Bruce platform successfully brought A14(A8) online after 7¾ years of dormancy and lost production. The well was shut because it substantially increased scale risk in the process plant, and particularly the main oil line booster pumps. The produced water contained >1,600 mg/l barium and if commingled with seawater produced from other wells would produce significant BaSO4 scale. Bringing the well online required a review and redefinition of scale management and plant operations to react to changing conditions. An in depth pre-start assurance checklist was developed that included changing the topside scale inhibitor to a newly developed blend and modifying the chemical injection system. An on-site scale detection method was introduced and the water management approach as it pertains to the water handling plant was reviewed. New procedures for well operations were developed and a contingency scale inhibitor delivery system put in place. A significant workload was completed in preparing the well to flow. This effort uncovered a few surprises that were managed successfully. The well was brought on at 4.17 MBOED (663 m3/d) a production gain that could not have been realised without this change in scale management philosophy.

Abstract:
Abstract The physical and chemical properties of secondary side steam generator deposits in the form of powder and flake obtained from Bruce Nuclear Generating Station A (BNGS A) Unit 3 were studied. The chemical phases present in both types of deposits, collected prior to the 1994 chemical cleaning during the pre-clean water lancing compaign, were magnetite (Fe3O4), metallic copper (Cu), hematite (Fe2O3) and cuprous oxide (Cu2O). The major difference between the chemical composition of the powder and the flake was the presence of zinc silicate (Zn2SiO4) and several unidentified silicate phases containing Ca, Al, Mn, and Mg in the flake. The flake deposit had high hardness values, high electrical resistivity, low porosity and a lower dissolution rate in the EPRI-SGOG (Electric Power Research Institute-Steam Generator Owner’s Group) chemical cleaning solvents compared to the powder deposit. Differences in the deposit properties after chemical cleaning of the Unit 3 steam generators and after laboratory cleaning were noted. The presence of silicates in the deposit inhibit magnetite dissolution.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Significant solids were found in the BP operated Bruce produced water reinjection (PWRI) pipework during routine intrusive work. The 6” discharge pipework was 50% choked and the suction pipework 30% choked. Analysis later confirmed this scale to be mostly mackinawite (FeS0.9340.96) with minor amounts of siderite (FeCO3) and strontium bearing barite (Ba(Sr)SO4). Approximately 1.8 mT was removed from one 40 meter run of pipework. The root cause of scale deposition was the alkaline H2S scavenger. A combined treatment of jetting and online dissolver was used to solve this problem. Treatment implementation was complicated by the complex nature of the plant and tie backs, and thus had to be closely managed and monitored. A novel iron chelating agent injected at a few hundred mg/l was used to dissolve remaining scale. Discovery of the scale, and the rapid treatment and removal program saved the PWRI plant from total blockage and shut down.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Hydrogen peroxide has been recommended for use as an oxidising agent for copper during the chemical cleaning of nuclear steam generators with EDTA-based solutions. However, uncertainty has remained with respect to the effects of process parameters on the stability of the hydrogen peroxide, and with respect to corrosion of Monel 400 tubing during cleaning. A program was established with the objectives to increase understanding on the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in copper removal solvent and study the corrosion of Monel 400 and other steam generator alloys in the solvent. The effects of using ammonia and ethylenediamine for preparing, and adjusting the pH of, the copper removal solvent are described. Parametric tests were carried out demonstrating the effects of copper concentration, iron concentration, solvent temperature, and the presence of magnetite, boiler deposits, and mild steel surfaces on the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The corrosion rates of Monel 400 and other alloys in the solvent were found to be negligible from the aspect of chemical cleaning requirements. Modifications to the existing copper removal process are recommended with the objective to optimise the process for application in Bruce NGS and Pickering NGS steam generators.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The triethylene glycol (TEG) in the operated Bruce platform glycol dehydrator towers was seen to steadily increase to over pH 10. This rise in pH was found to be attributable to the carry over of triazine based H2S scavenger chemical, used to treat sour process gas. This paper details the root cause failure analysis as well as the various mitigation strategies researched and developed and the final field deployment. High glycol pH increased the risk of process upsets because it had an affect on the resultant gas dew point and therefore promoted concern over the dehydration efficiency at re-boiler temperatures of 200°C. Further potential issues included foaming, regeneration efficacy, solids precipitation and increased scale potential. The proposed solution was for an acidic buffer chemical to be injected into the glycol to lower the pH. However at the lower pH a possible corrosion problem could result so a detailed laboratory study was undertaken to help risk assess the impact of introducing an acidic chemical in to the system. The study evaluated several potential acidic chemicals and tested for compatibility, corrosivity, solids precipitation, high temperature stability and buffering efficacy. The paper goes onto detail the risk assessment process used to determine the method and mode of field application as well as the results from the successful field application of this chemical.

Abstract:

Usage of hollow section braces is popular in steel structures for their superior performance. To connect tubular members with the structural frame, field-bolted connections between the slotted- in splice and gusset plates are often utilized. However, single-shear bolted connections have a higher risk of sway mode buckling because of the eccentricity between the gusset plate and the brace axis. This study proposes a brace end connection in which the T-shaped splice members are inserted into the tubular brace so that the gusset plate axis is identical with the brace axis. The T-shaped splice members axis can be coincided with the brace axis by using a specific cross-sectional shape, which avoids a brace strength reduction due to eccentricity. In this paper, compressive loading tests and finite element analyses are presented to clarify the effectiveness of proposed T-shaped splice members at the brace-end connection of the circular hollow section brace.

Ndhlovu, Lewis. Quality of care in family planning service delivery in Kenya: Clients' and providers' perspectives. Population Council, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1995.1038.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, the increasing number of organizations that have studied quality of care in international family planning (FP) programs demonstrates the importance the topic has acquired. To define quality of care in FP, the Bruce–Jain framework of six elements of care (choice of methods, information given to clients, technical competence, interpersonal relations, continuity and follow up, and appropriate constellation of services) have been used as the standard. However, what has been overlooked in this approach is the clients' perspectives of service quality. This study sought to narrow the gap in knowledge about the comparability and consistency in views between clients, providers, and researchers. Thus, this study’s main objective was to define the laypersons' and providers' dimensions of quality of care and compare them with the Bruce-Jain elements. The study was conducted in Kenya between July and September 1994. It was the first part of the Kenyan National Situation Analysis Study (conducted in 1995), and results will provide a guide in the methodology and formulation of the study instruments.
