Abstract:
A new, hydroid-associated representative of the genus Periclimenes from Vietnam is described and illustrated. P. laevimanus sp. nov. is most similar to P. granulimanus Bruce, 1978, but differs from it by the more slender and smooth, not granulated, major second pereiopod and the non-dentate cutting edges of the minor second pereiopod. A new host is reported for P. granulimanus. Mouth parts are described and illustrated for P. brucei Ď uriš, 1990. This species is easily distinguished by its extremely elongate second pereiopods, with the carpus longer than the chela, and the walking legs lacking simple spines proximally from the distoventral series of paired spines. Periclimenes tonga Bruce, 1990 differs from other members of the species group by having only a single pair of dorsal telson spines. A key for the identification of species of the herein established P. granulimanus species group is provided. Types and/or museum specimens of some other Periclimenes species (P. hongkongensis Bruce, 1969, P. nomadophila Berggren, 1994, P. ruber Bruce, 1982, and P. toloensis Bruce, 1969) were examined to evaluate their relationship with the P. granulimanus species complex.

Taggart, James Hand. "The historicity of Barbour's 'Bruce'." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2004. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1423/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation systematically evaluates the historicity of the epic poem The Bruce, written towards the end of the fourteenth century and attributed to Archdeacon John Barbour of Aberdeen. For the purposes of analysis, the poem has been divided into 119 discrete episodes, which cover 95 percent of the text. Ninety-one of these appear in other historical sources. A rigorous evaluative methodology establishes a satisfactory level of historicity of these 91 episodes, significantly higher than has been allowed by many critics of the poem. The 28 episodes that do not appear in other sources are assessed by a parallel methodology. The analyses of these two types of episode provide an original rationale for judiciously using The Bruce as a sole source. Using the battle of Bannockburn as a case study, the value of The Bruce as a source is clearly demonstrated. By implication, it may also be regarded as an indispensable source for the 1306-1329 period as a whole. However, a textual analysis of the poem indicates that at least four, and perhaps as many as six, hands were at work in the writing of The Bruce. It is suggested that John Barbour may have been the lead author and editor. The dissertation concludes that The Bruce was written as a historically accurate (insofar as the term was understood in the fourteenth century) account of the part Robert I and his lieutenants played in the War of Independence. It is nationalistic in tone. Its core ideologies are chivalry and freedom of the Scots from English domination. It uses literary devices to make the content accessible, persuasive and memorable. Thus, it may also be regarded as a fundamentally important contribution to Scottish literature.

Abstract:
This essay accounts for the lives of atist couple Carolina Benedicks Bruce (1856-1935) and William Blair Bruce (1859-1906). The perspective emerges from both Griselda Pollock’s theories on female artists as from Yvonne Hirdman’s gender contract. The essay is made out in the form of a biography, with focus on aspects of gender roles, class and identity. The material consists of letters written by the couple and their families, as well as Carolina’s diaries.    Carolina Benedicks Bruce was born into the wealthy Benedicks family  from Stockholm and Gysinge. At Grez she met William Blair Bruce in 1885. William was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and was sent to France by his family for artistic education in his twenties. They built a home together at Gotland; Brucebo. They conducted themselves liberally to the current norms of gender roles, class and identity aspects of the time. They created their own path, to be able to do what they were passionate about.

Graves, Matthew. "Dépaysement et ressourcement dans l'oeuvre de Bruce Chatwin." Paris 4, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1993PA040087.

Full text
Abstract:
It derives its coherence from the author's theory that man is a born nomad, and the history of civilization an unending conflict between nomadism and settlement. Over successive narratives, the theory is structured around a dialectic between 'disorientation' and 'renewal', with on the hand the recurrent themes of exile, of the journey-as -curative, and the retreat from history, and on the other those of rootedness, of the journey-as-quest, and the return to origins, this dialectic constitutes the real dynamic of Chatwin's work. It reflects the unresolved debate between the ascetic and the aesthete, the wanderer and the intellectual, the traveller and the researcher within him. With the last books, it opens out into an exploration of the alchemy between writing and travel, creation and reality, and the eternal duality between being and becoming

Full text
Abstract:
The Aging and Obsolescence Program (AOP) developed by AECL in cooperation with Bruce Power ensures that Bruce Power is able to proactively manage plant critical component vulnerabilities before failure, thereby improving unit forced outage rates and reliability. AOP involves application of INPO AP-913 guidance for aging and obsolescence. The process includes component criticality identification and prioritization, single point vulnerability identification, and development of the technical basis to support maintenance. This includes replace or repair strategies, identification of critical spare parts and stocking parameters, through to the identification and resolution of obsolescence issues. The program is applicable to all components in a plant, but is being applied initially to critical components. This includes all Bruce B criticality category 1 components and those components that have caused plant trips or outages The program was also expanded to include review of buried piping for both Bruce A and B, additional plant systems based upon health status, and heat exchangers. Critical Spare Parts and Obsolescence Assessments identify and manage critical spare parts and obsolescence for Bruce Power SSCs (structures, systems, and components) and optimize spare parts inventory, which is intended to meet both planned and un-planned demand. In order to facilitate implementation of the AOP, the project includes integration of the program into Bruce Power processes and procedures. The cooperation between Bruce Power and AECL on AOP began as a small pilot project in 2007 where the program and procedures were developed by analysis of a few select components. The paper describes the Bruce Power Aging Obsolescence Program, the novelties and improvements of this integrated methodology and progress made to date.

Abstract:
The current reality of global competition and the deregulation of utilities necessitates the pursuit of all financial optimizers. At present, statistical modeling is not used in the conventional maintenance decisions of capital intensive industries such as nuclear, an industry that represents hundreds of billions of dollars of industrial infrastructure. Successful evaluations of Statistical Maintenance Techniques at Bruce Power have resulted in the decision to implement a plant wide program to help optimize the maintenance function. This paper contains a brief summary of some of these evaluations.

Abstract:
Groundwater resources development and the threat of future drought in Garfield County, southwestern Utah, prompted a study of groundwater quality and quantity in the environs of Bryce Canyon National Park and Bryce Canyon City in Johns and Emery Valleys. Water quality, water quantity, and the potential for water-quality degradation are critical elements determining the extent and nature of future development in the valley. The community of Bryce Canyon City is an area of active tourism and, therefore, of potential increase in growth (likely from tourism-related development). Groundwater exists in Quaternary valley-fill and bedrock aquifers (the Tertiary Claron Formation and Cretaceous sandstone). Increased demand on drinking water warrants careful land-use planning and resource management to preserve surface and groundwater resources of Johns and Emery Valleys and surrounding areas that may be hydrologically connected to these valleys including Bryce Canyon National Park.
