Abstract:

AbstractLet (V,0) be the germ of an analytic variety in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and f an analytic function germ defined on V. For functions with isolated singularity on V, Bruce and Roberts introduced a generalization of the Milnor number of f, which we call Bruce–Roberts number, μBR(V,f). Like the Milnor number of f, this number shows some properties of f and V. In this paper we investigate algebraic and geometric characterizations of the constancy of the Bruce–Roberts number for families of functions with isolated singularities on V. We also discuss the topological invariance of the Bruce–Roberts number for families of quasihomogeneous functions defined on quasihomogeneous varieties. As application of the results, we prove a relative version of the Zariski multiplicity conjecture for quasihomogeneous varieties.

Borradaile (1915) established Falciger Borradaile, 1915, as a subgenus of Periclimenes Costa, 1844, for nine species described by him as new to science: Periclimenes (Falciger) nilandensis Borradaile, 1915; P. (F.) affinis Borradaile, 1915; P. (F.) dubius Borradaile, 1915; P. (F.) compressus Borradaile, 1915; P. (F.) brocketti Borradaile, 1915; P. (F.) pottsi Borradaile, 1915; P. (F.) suvadivensis Borradaile, 1915; P. (F.) seychellensis Borradaile, 1915; and P. (F.) kolumadulensis Borradaile, 1915. Two years later, Borradaile (1917) increased the number of species in the subgenus up to 27, and designated Periclimenes petitthouarsi var. spinifera De Man, 1902, now considered to be Periclimenella spinifera (De Man, 1902), as the type species of the subgenus. Subsequently, Holthuis (1955) designated P. (F.) nilandensis as the type species because Periclimenes petitthouarsi var. spinifera was not included in the original description of Falciger by Borradaile (1915) (see ICZN 1999: Article 67.2). Earlier, Clark (1919) had proposed a replacement generic name Cuapetes Clark, 1919 for Borradaile’s Falciger, since the latter name is a junior homonym of Falciger Say, 1824 (Insecta: Coleoptera), Falciger Bucholz, 1869 (Arachnida: Arachnoidea), and Falciger Trouessart and Mégnin, 1883 (Arachnida: Arachnoidea) (see Holthuis 1993). Following current nomenclatorial rules, the type species of Cuapetes must thus be regarded to be P. (F.) nilandensis (see ICZN 1999: Article 67.8). Until now, shrimp taxonomists have always considered Cuapetes as a junior synonym of Periclimenes sensu lato (see Holthuis 1993; Chace and Bruce 1993), but a situation is herein corrected.

We first prove that $\mu _{BR}(f,X)=\mu (f)+\mu (\phi ,f)+\mu (X,0)-\tau (X,0)$, where $\mu $ and $\tau $ are the Milnor and Tjurina numbers respectively of a function or an isolated complete intersection singularity. Second, we show that the logarithmic characteristic variety $LC(X,0)$ is Cohen–Macaulay. Both theorems generalize the results of a previous paper by some of the authors, in which the hypersurface $(X,0)$ was assumed to be weighted homogeneous.

Abstract:

The experiment was conducted at the Forestry Research Center, Ethiopia in 2008. Soil was sampled under the canopy ofHagenia abyssinicaand from farmland area adjacent to the forest to measure fertility of soils by using the biotest with linseed (Linum usitatissimumL.), barley (Hordeum vulgareL.), and wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) as indicators. The experimental design was a completely randomized design comprising of 20 seedlings per study site. Seeds were seeded into polythene plastic bags. Seedling emergence, germination, and survival rate were recorded. Plant height and root collar diameter were measured. Final weight of fresh biomass was measured, and each component was oven-dried at 70°C. Dry weight was recorded at constant weight. Significant differences (P<.05) were observed between soil treatments. Plants grown onHagenia-influenced soils attained better performance, suggesting the beneficial role ofHagenia abyssinicain enhancing soil fertility status which in turn results in higher productivity.

The Binnie family may be traced back many generations to the Eastern Lowlands of Scotland, early records of the surname being associated in the 13th century with Uphall, West Lothian. The Armorial Bearings granted to a distant ancestor, a ‘horse's head furnished with a wagon proper’, and an ambiguous motto, ‘virtute doloque’ (by courage and policy [or deceit]), recall an incident of history–or myth—of the year 1313 in which a yeoman farmer, William Binny, who supplied hay to Edward II of England's garrison troops of a peel, Linlithgow Castle, adopted the ruse of stalling his wagon on entering the castle so that neither could the drawbridge be raised nor the portcullis lowered. Scottish soldiers emerged from beneath the hay and, with local irregulars, took the castle in the name of Robert the Bruce of Scotland.

We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for some deformations to have non-negative degree (i.e., for any additional term in the deformation, the weighted degree is not smaller) in terms of an adapted version of the relative Milnor number. We study the cases where (X, 0) is an isolated hypersurface singularity and the invariant is the Bruce-Roberts number of f with respect to (X, 0), and where (X, 0) is an isolated complete intersection or a curve singularity and the invariant is the Milnor number of the germ f: (X, 0) → ℂ. In the last part, we give some formulas for the invariants in terms of the weights and the degrees of the polynomials.

Abstract:

Background:Treat-to-target strategies have improved outcomes in patients with RA. Targets based on clinical assessments of tender (TJC) and swollen joints (SJC) were developed when most patients had active inflammatory disease. It is now recognised some patients have pain sensitisation often termed fibromyalgia (FM), making clinical assessment of inflammatory disease more complex. An indicator of pain sensitisation is the difference between TJC and SJC, an observation we described in a pilot study (1).Objectives:To study patients with RA to describe the relationships between enhanced clinical and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS) and active inflammatory joint disease detected by comprehensive PDUS.Methods:158 sequential patients with RA with a DAS28ESR score >¬3.2 were enrolled from GSTT Rheumatology after informed consent. They were assessed by a rheumatologist for 66SJC, 68TJC, fibromyalgia tender points & physician global. Recorded PROMS were: patient global, widespread pain index (WPI), symptom severity score (somatic & fatigue), FACIT fatigue, HAQ, EQ5D QoL, GAD7, PHQ9 and PHQ15. All patients had a 44 joint US scored for PD and grey scale by the EULAR scale blind to all patient data. Data were recorded on MedSciNet and statistical analysis used STATA.Results:Patients meeting the ACR 2010 criteria for FM2(n=72) vs those that did not(n=86) had similar demographics. SJC and US doppler scores were higher in the non-FM group, whereas rheumatoid factor, DAS28 and PROMs were higher in the FM group. Analysis of group differences using multinomial logistic regression and subsequent regularised (lasso) logistic regression, showed the FM group related to higher 28TJC, FACIT-F and PHQ15, with the non-FM group related to higher 28SJC, logESR, and lower Differences in 28S/TJC, Physician Global and FACIT-F. Patients were divided into four groups based on presence or absence of at least one PDUS+ joint and FM criteria; -FM-PD, -FM+PD, +FM-PD and +FM+PD, data summarised Table 1. The -FM-PD and -FM+PD groups related to Physician Global and negatively related to FACIT-F, Difference in 28S/TJC, and PHQ15 (-FM-PD). Abstract:

The death of Colin Hemer in 1987 has deprived the fellowship of New Testament scholars of one who, like his late mentor F. F. Bruce, was able to bring to bear on the study of the text of the New Testament the insights and discipline of one trained in the Classics. Hemer's posthumously published The Book of Acts in the Setting of Hellenistic History is an attempt on a large scale to argue the case for the historicity of Acts with respect to attention to matters of detail, and, as a consequence, the trustworthiness of its author. Luke the historian, contends Hemer, deserves to be judged according to the historiographical conventions of his day, the conventions of a venerable historiographical heritage whose great exemplar in the Hellenistic era was Polybius. Hemer's bringing of a vast collection of epigraphical and archaeological evidence to bear on the question of Lukan historicity should shake the presuppositions and conclusions of the sceptical and help NT scholars to appreciate both Lukan accuracy and Acts' ‘topicality’.

In 1972, the Mathematics Teacher published a series of three articles in “The Forum,” a section of the journal devoted to diverging opinions with respect to the role of geometry and the best approach to it. The February issue addressed the question “What should become of the high school geometry course?” The articles in “The Forum” in February were written by Howard F. Fehr, Frank M. Eccles, and Bruce E. Meserve. I chose the article by Fehr as one that has had an effect on high school curricula and still poses some answers to the original question today. The question was the subject of a panel discussion at the August 2006 MathFest of the Mathematical Association of America sponsored by the NCTM/MAA Joint Committee on Mutual Concerns.

The participants were subjected to Static and PNF stretching exercises. After the interventions, the Bruce treadmill protocol was applied to measure VO2max values. The expired gases were collected and analyzed continuously using the Cortex Metalyzer II. Analysis of variance showed significant main effects for interventions (F(2,18)=10.74, p<.05) on VO2max. In 1972, the Mathematics Teacher published a series of three articles in “The Forum,” a section of the journal devoted to diverging opinions with respect to the role of geometry and the best approach to it. The February issue addressed the question “What should become of the high school geometry course?” The articles in “The Forum” in February were written by Howard F. Fehr, Frank M. Eccles, and Bruce E. Meserve. I chose the article by Fehr as one that has had an effect on high school curricula and still poses some answers to the original question today. The question was the subject of a panel discussion at the August 2006 MathFest of the Mathematical Association of America sponsored by the NCTM/MAA Joint Committee on Mutual Concerns.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between active and passive body mass components and maximal aerobic consumption (VO2max) in adult male soccer players.Methods: The study involved seven hundred (700) male soccer players, mean age 25.06 ± 4.41 years (range 18 to 35), divided in six age groups. Body composition was assessed according the anthropometric protocol by Matiegka, and relative muscle mass (MM%), bone (BM%) and fat (BF%) and absolute muscle mass (MMkg), bone (BMkg) and fat (BFkg) components were calculated. The Bruce protocol (incremental multistage treadmill test) was used for the estimation of maximal oxygen consumption.Results: Mean values of body mass components for total sample were as follows: muscle mass (MM%)= 52.75 ± 2.63%, bone mass (BM%)=16.63 ± 1.29% and body fat (BF%)=14.12 ± 1.54%. Mean VO2max was 48.89±5.17 ml/kg/minute. Relative muscle mass (MM%) showed similar values across age different groups (ANOVA: F=2.174; p=0.06) while absolute muscle mass (MMkg) showed tendency of increment with age (ANOVA: F=2.136; p=0.01). Body fat (BFkg and BF%) was statistically higher in the older groups (ANOVA F=3.737; p<0.01; ANOVA F=4.117; p<0.01). Weak positive correlation between VO2 max and muscle component (r=0.243; p<0.001) and a weak negative correlation between VO2max and body fat (r=-0.08;p<0.05) were found.Conclusions: Our results confirm the assumption that subjects with larger muscle mass have greater endurance and higher maximal oxygen consumption compared to subjects with larger body fat component.

In this paper we investigate the geometry of simple germs of co-rank 1 maps from ℝ3 to ℝ3. Those of co-dimension 1 have already been dealt with by several authors. In [2], V. I. Arnold considered the problem of evolution of galaxies. For a medium of non-interacting particles in ℝ3 with an initial velocity distribution v = v(x) (and a positive density distribution), the initial motion of particles defines a time-dependent map gt: ℝ3 → ℝ3 given by gt(x) = x + tv(x). At some time t singularities occur and the critical values of gi correspond to points of condensation of particles. Arnold assumed the vector field v is a gradient, that is v = ∇S, for some potential S. J. W. Bruce generalized these results in [4] by dropping the assumption on the velocity distribution and studied generic 1-parameter families of map germs F: ℝ3, 0 → ℝ3, 0.

A central character in 1 Samuel 4-6 is the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark is captured in battle, and subsequently wreaks havoc throughout the land of the Philistines until its subsequent return to the borders of Israel. Commonly referred to as the ‘Ark Narrative’ in scholarly literature, 1 Samuel 4-6 has often been viewed as a separate unit within the larger Deuteronomistic History. Although the Ark Narrative has been the subject of considerable scholarly interest, the methodological foci of such studies appear to have undergone a shift in more recent times. While earlier studies espoused a host of different critical approaches, such as tradition-historical, form-critical and redactional methodologies, it would seem that more recent studies have exhibited greater interest in literary appraisal and narrative criticism. This article presents a summary of recent research on the Ark Narrative of 1 Samuel 4-6 by 12 scholars: Robert Gordon, Lyle Eslinger, Peter Miscall, Walter Brueggemann, Yehoshua Gitay, Robert Polzin, J.P. Abstract:

The aim of the study was to determine the rate of fat oxidation during continuous and intermittent acute endurance exercise. Eleven healthy untrained men participated in this study. Subjects performed Bruce protocol test on cycle ergometer to determine maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). The exercise intensity in which the highest fat oxidation rate occurs was determined in this exercise test for each subject. Oxygen uptake (VO2) and carbon dioxide (VCO2) production during the exercises were followed by respiratory gas analyzer and whole-body fat oxidation was calculated by indirect calorimeter equations. Subjects performed 45min intermittent (IE) and continuous (CE) exercises in respiratory exchange ratio (RER) at intensity correspondent at the highest fat oxidation rate (Fat max). The peak fat oxidation rate was equal to 40.6% of maximum oxygen consumption of subjects. The changes occurring with time in fat (F=20.67) and carbohydrate (F=19.44) oxidation rates were statistically significant (P<0.01). However, the changes of fat and carbohydrate (CHO) oxidation with time did not show any statistically significant differences between the continuous and intermittent exercises (P>0.05). The results of the study indicate that the continuous and intermittent exercises performed at the exercise intensity ensuring maximum fat oxidation rate provide similar fat oxidation. Especially, for the individuals starting regular exercise applications newly, it can be said that similar positive results regarding fat oxidation can also be obtained by avoiding the insipidity of long lasting exercises and giving breaks.
