Abstract:
The Bruce effect is a pheromonally mediated process whereby exposure to chemosensory cues from an unfamiliar male terminates pregnancy in a recently mated female. Pharmacological and genetic evidence implicates both oxytocin (Oxt) and vasopressin (Avp) in the regulation of social memory in males, but less work has been done in females. We tested the extent to which the Avp receptors (Avprs) 1a and 1b and Oxt are essential for the Bruce effect, a phenomenon that relies on olfactory memory. Adult female mice were paired with stimulus males and monitored for the presence of sperm plugs. Wild-type, heterozygous, and homozygous knockout (KO) females for either the Avpr1a, Avpr1b, or Oxt genes were randomly assigned to one of the following treatment groups: 1) alone (mate removed, no second exposure to another animal); 2) paired continuously (mate kept with female for 10–14 d); 3) familiar male (mate removed, reintroduced 24 h later); or 4) unfamiliar male (mate removed, BalbC male introduced 24 h later). Regardless of genotype, 90–100% of females in the alone or paired continuously groups became pregnant. The Oxt KO females terminated their pregnancies regardless of whether their original mate or an unfamiliar male was reintroduced. The Avpr1b KO mice failed to terminate pregnancy in the presence of an unfamiliar male. The Avpr1a KO mice exhibited a normal Bruce effect. These data demonstrate that both Oxt and the Avpr1b are critical for the normal expression of the Bruce effect but have different effects on the interpretation of social cues.

Abstract:
[EN] Small dwelling and urban form. German modern city bases. Small dwelling and urban form are the main concepts in which this research is based. The intention is to determine the characteristics of the German city where the modern architecture of Neues Bauen is developed. The small dwelling, as a new type lacking in an immediate historical precedent, arises from the need to house a new class of the industrial proletariat. The urban form as a different configuration which the city acquires. This is a result of the transformations that its growth demands in order to adapt to a new social reality. In Germany, as in the rest of Europe, the origin of the small dwelling came from the need to improve the living conditions of the worker. A reaction that was produced mainly from philanthropy but also as a guarantee in keeping some established social conditions. The movement for housing reform, set out by private initiatives, effectively solves new forms for a small, hygienic and functional dwelling that was accessible to a part of the working masses, establishing solid and functional criteria that would be maintained as the principles of a typology in the configuration of the modern dwelling at the beginning of the 20th century. The great German city, represented mainly by Berlin in this research, outlines its expansion through an imported urban idea that has, as its main interest, the monumental expression of the urban space. With a system originated in the interior reform processes of the French city, it outlines the exterior expansion of the German city as a continued imposing construction, in which the small dwelling only constitutes a dense internal filling. This "petrous sea", as Muthesius defines a city that extends concentrated to its limits, would be seen as incompatible with the small dwelling that was needed. Once this inconsistency was recognized and with a new scientific approach to the construction of the city, a transformation process was begun towards a new urban model that took into consideration the need for a small and healthy dwelling and returns to the citizen the contact with nature, a sense that is a deeply ingrained in German people. From the ideas and actions of the leading figures in this process, gathered in original documents, the research advances in the recognition of the typical and essential characteristics of a German city, that, at the start of the third decade of the 20th century, bases its modern quality in common criteria relative to the separation of urban functions, the insertion of green in the city and the value of public space. On this modern German city of first post-war Europe, the specific solution of the architecture of Neues Bauen will be built.
[CAT] Habitatge petit i forma urbana.

In this study, twelve H-shaped steel beam with continuous lateral and torsional bracing were tested under cyclic loading to investigate the behavior. Discuss about with various kind of beam bracing system and configuring in web. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions can be drawn: (1) Plastic moment of the steel beam can’t be reached when no any lateral and torsional bracing system were used. (2) Although plastic moment can be reached when lateral bracing be used, but it had a psychology using problem. (3) Under configuring continuous brace system, it elevated value also controls mostly out of plane deformation, and the hysteretic curve is more plump. (4) Adding stiffener in web was not only elevated the ability of depressing pinching effect but also depressed out of plane deformation. (5)It not only can exert seismic efficacy but also had good toughness with cover plate in web. In the real situation, the moment strength can be influenced by out of stress in column, so it needs to be further confirmed the feasibility. Abstract:
The present dissertation provides an investigation that uses drawing as a composition method to deepen the knowledge about fictional creatures composed of two materials with different origins. Organic and mechanical. The purpose is to structure a constructive methodology that serves as an example to follow for the creation of biosynthetic fictional living beings, based on concept art drawings. Consequently, the theoretical aspect of this research describes the form of drawing used, as well as the method of how these creatures will be demonstrated through concept art. Afterwards the catalyst inspiration of these fictional creatures is deepened, where their idea was originally contextualized, which is through science fiction. In this sense, some artists who produce art associated with the subject of biomechanics are exemplified, as well as creatures from film and video game media, to be based on and analyzed for the composition of the creatures present in this dissertation. Regarding the practical approach of this work, it is deepened and reflected the issue of the creation, exploration and visual patterns of these fictional creatures, as these are crucial aspects to develop for their design. From there, it is demonstrated the creative process that encompasses the studies and research of the drawings made as well as its development. Then in the final realization of the developed creatures, the entire practical archived process is demonstrated through the digital drawings made. From the silhouette chosen for each creature, the initial sketches, line drawing and color of the final appearance, as well as drawings showing all the general physiognomy and shapes that some creatures have. A description of each creature is also given, mentioning what kind of place and function they have in the fictional society in which they find themselves.

Abstract:
Abstract The chapter tells about the arrival of the first Ethiopic copies of Enoch into Western Europe through the efforts of James Bruce, the contents of the book, the history of scholarship on it, including the editing and translating work of August Dillmann, before Charles studied it. It then describes the articles and the three books that Charles wrote about it, with an account of his theory regarding the components from which the Ethiopic Book of Enoch was compiled and the dates, teachings, and original languages of each of them. For Charles’s books there is consideration of the contemporary reviews written about them, of more recent textual discoveries, and of how his work continues to impact study of the Book of Enoch today.

Abstract:
This chapter treats Scottish kenoticism as an empirically driven appropriation of mid-nineteenth-century German Lutheran kenoticists. In his seminal work, The Humiliation of Christ (1876), A. B. Bruce is shown to be the mediator of the new German theology. Later Scottish kenoticism is represented here by David Forrest, P. T. Forsyth, and H. R. Mackintosh, all of whom sought to maintain a commitment to the incarnation through the employment of kenotic categories. The development and criticism of kenoticism are considered as it migrated from Germany to the English-speaking world. Questions are raised in conclusion as to the ongoing usefulness of the theory of a divine ‘self-reduction’ or depotentiation.

Abstract:
Shazia Zaman of the University of Canterbury and Andrew D. Abell of the University of Adelaide devised (Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 878) a polyethylene glycol-tagged Ru catalyst that is effective for alkene metathesis in aqueous mixtures, cyclizing 1 to 2. Bruce H. Lipshutz of the University of California, Santa Barbara developed (J. Org. Chem. 2011, 76, 4697, 5061) an alternative approach for aqueous methathesis, and also showed that CuI is an effective cocatalyst, converting 3 to 5. Christian Slugovc of the Graz University of Technology showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 2560) that cross metathesis of the diene 6 with ethyl acrylate 7 could be carried out with very low catalyst loadings. Robert H. Grubbs of the California Institute of Technology designed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 7490) a Ru catalyst for the ethylenolysis of 9 to 10 and 11. Thomas R. Hoye of the University of Minnesota showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 2141) that the allyl malonate linker of 12 was particularly effective in promoting relay ring-closing metathesis to 13. Amir H. Hoveyda of Boston College designed (Nature 2011, 471, 461) a Mo catalyst that mediated the cross metathesis of 14 with 15 to give 16 with high Z selectivity. Professor Grubbs designed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 8525) a Z selective Ru catalyst. Damian W. Young of the Broad Institute demonstrated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 9196) that ring closing metathesis of 17 followed by desilylation also led to the Z product, 18. Thomas E. Nielsen of the Technical University of Denmark devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 5188) a Ru-mediated cascade process, effecting ring-closing metathesis of 19, followed by alkene migration to the enamide, and finally diastereoselective cyclization to 20. In the course of a total synthesis of (–)-goniomitine, Chisato Mukai of Kanazawa University showed (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 1796) that even the very congested alkene of 22 smoothly participated in cross metathesis with 21 to give 23. En route to leustroducsin B, Jeffrey S. Johnson of the University of North Carolina protected (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 3206) an otherwise incompatible terminal alkyne as its Co complex 24, allowing ring closing methathesis to 25.

Abstract:
As alkene metathesis is extended to more and more challenging substrates, improved catalysts and solvents are required. Robert H. Grubbs of Caltech developed (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 441) the diisopropyl complex 1, that efficiently formed the trisubstituted alkene 6 by cross metathesis of 4 with 5. Hervé Clavier and Stephen P. Nolan of ICIQ, Tarragona, and Marc Mauduit of ENSC Rennes found (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 4225) that after cyclization of 7 with the complex 2b, simple filtration of the reaction mixture through silica gel delivered the product 8 containing only 5.5 ppm Ru. The merit of CH2Cl2 as a solvent for alkene metathesis is that the catalysts (e.g. 1 - 3) are very stable. Claire S. Adjiman of Imperial College and Paul C. Taylor of the University of Warwick established (Chem. Commun. 2008, 2806) that although the second generation Grubbs catalyst 3 is not as stable in acetic acid, for the cyclization of 9 to 10 it is a much more active catalyst in acetic acid than in CH2Cl2 . Bruce H. Lipshutz of the University of California, Santa Barbara observed (Adv. Synth. Cat . 2008, 350, 953) that even water could serve as the reaction solvent for the challenging cyclization of 11 to 12, so long as the solubility- enhancing amphiphile PTS was included. Ernesto G. Mata of the Universidad Nacional de Rosario explored (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 2024) resin isolation to optimize cross-metathesis, finding that the acrylate 13 worked particularly well. Karol Grela of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw optimized (Chem. Commun. 2008, 2468) cross-metathesis with a halogenated alkene 16. Jean-Marc Campagne of ENSC Montpellier extended (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 1562) ring-closing metathesis to enynes such as 19. The product diene 20 was a reactive Diels-Alder dienophile. István E. Markó of the Université Catholique de Louvain applied (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 1523) the known (OHL 20070122) ring-closing metathesis of enol ethers to the cyclization of the Tebbe product from 23. The ether 24 was oxidized directly to the lactone 25.

Janine Cossy of ESPCI Paris (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 4084) and Yasushi Obora of Kansai University (Chem. Lett. 2011, 40, 1055) independently developed conditions for the “borrowed hydrogen” condensation of acetonitrile with an alcohol 1 to give the nitrile 2. Akio Baba of Osaka University showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 8623) that a ketene silyl acetal 4 could be condensed with a carboxylic acid 3 to give the β-keto ester 5. Timothy W. Funk of Gettysburg College found (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 6726) that the cyclopropanol 6, readily prepared by Kulinkovich condensation of an alkene with an ester, opened with high regioselectivity to give the branched ketone 7. In an elegant application of C–H functionalization, Yong Hae Kim of KAIST and Kieseung Lee of Woosuk University added (Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 4662) the acetal 9 in a conjugate sense to 8 to give 10. Hitoshi Kuniyasu and Nobuaki Kambe of Osaka University devised (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 6818) conditions for the Pd-catalyzed carbonylation of a silyl alkyne 11 to the ester 12 with high geometric control. Dennis G. Hall of the University of Alberta also observed (Chem. Sci. 2011, 2, 1305) good geometric control in the rearrangement of the vinyl carbinol 13 to the alcohol 14. Takashi Tomioka of the University of Mississippi condensed (J. Org. Chem. 2011, 76, 8053) the anion 16, prepared in situ from lithio acetonitrile and 1-iodobutane, with the aldehyde 15 to give a nitrile, which was carried onto the aldehyde 17, again with good control of geometry. Bruce H. Lipshutz of the University of California, Santa Barbara established (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 3818) conditions for the Negishi coupling of an alkenyl halide 18 to give 20 with retention of alkene geometry. Daesung Lee of the University of Illinois, Chicago found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 12964) that a Pt catalyst rearranged a silyl cyclopropene 21 to the allene 22. Jan Deska of the Universität zu Köln prepared (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 9731) the enantiomerically enriched allene 25 by lipase-mediated esterification of the prochiral 23.

Computational analysis of the Novozyme 435 active site led (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 309) Liyan Dai and Hongwei Yu of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, to t-butanol for the enantioselective monoesterification of 1 to 2. Bruce H. Lipshutz of the University of California, Santa Barbara, devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 7852) a Cu catalyst that mediated the enantioselective 1,2-reduction of α-branched enones such as 3. Qi-Lin Zhou of Nankai University found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 1172) that an α-alkoxy unsaturated acid 5 could be hydrogenated with high ee. Tohru Yamada of Keio University desymmetrized (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 4072) the tertiary alcohol 7, delivering the enol lactone 8. Zachary D. Aron of Indiana University established (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 1916) that the simple aldehyde 10 effected rapid racemization of the α-amino ester 9. Running the epimerization in the presence of an enantioselective esterase produced 11 high ee. Robert A. Batey of the University of Toronto devised (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 260) a Pd catalyst for the enantioselective rearrangement of 12 to 13. In the course of a synthesis of dapoxetine, Hyeon-Kyu Lee of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology showed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 237) that the Rh*-mediated intramolecular C-H insertion of 14 to 15, as developed by Du Bois, gave the opposite absolute configuration to that originally assigned. To prepare α-quaternary amines, Thomas G. Back of the University of Calgary explored (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 1612) the selectivity of the PLE hydrolysis of esters such as 16. Daniel R. Fandrick and colleagues at Boehringer Ingelheim reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 7600) a general method for the catalytic enantioselective propargylation of aldehydes, including 18. Dennis G. Hall of the University of Alberta devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 5544) a route to α-hydroxy esters such as 22 by enantioselective conjugate addition to 21. Alexandre Alexakis of the University of Geneva prepared (Chem. Commun. 2010, 46, 4085) disubstituted epoxides such as 25 by the conjugate addition of 23 to 24.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE OF BUCKLING-RESTRAINED BRACE ON FRAMES WITH HIGH-STRENGTH CONCRETE-FILLED SQUARE STEEL TUBE COLUMNS. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, September 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2023.19.3.9.

Full text
Abstract:
Using buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) in frames with high-strength concrete-filled square steel tube columns(HSCFSSTC) can solve issues such as brittle failure and low lateral stiffness. To investigate the mechanical performance of buckling-restrained brace frames(BRBFs), an experiment study was conducted. The investigation involved the design and analysis of a frame system composed of BRBs, HSCFSSTC and H-shaped steel beams. Sub-structures at a 1/3 scale with two types of connections, welded and pin connections, were subjected to pseudo-static tests. The influence of BRBF connection types on the plastic hinge formation mechanism, load-bearing capacity, energy dissipation capacity and stress magnitude of the connection gusset plates was examined. After the test, ABAQUS software was used for finite element analysis of the specimen, and the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental results.Based on the results, both the welded and pin-connected specimens formed plastic hinges at column bases and the beam ends, which ensured the energy dissipation performance of BRBs. Pin connections were found to exhibit noticeable slippage during loading due to the presence of holes. However, the study found that the plastic hinge formation mechanism, load-bearing capacity, and lateral stiffness of the frames with the two connection types were similar. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the load-bearing capacity, stress distribution, and magnitude between the two connection types. Nevertheless, welded connections demonstrated a greater potential for broader application as they allowed the BRB to resist horizontal seismic forces earlier than pin connections.
