Abstract:
Von Balthasar's study The Theology of Karl Barth has long been regarded as a seminal work for the interpretation and reception of Barth. Recently its influence has been challenged by Bruce McCormack, who argues that the von Balthasar thesis of a conversion from dialectic to analogy occasioned by Barth's study of Anselm is inadequate. This paper seeks to show not just that there is more to von Balthasar's interpretation than McCormack allows, but also that von Balthasar's study of Barth had a profound influence on his own theological development. In particular, it argues that through his critic

Abstract:
The concept of “The Irish Wilde”achieved considerable prominence during the 1990s, due to the advocacy and scholarship of Davis Coakley, Owen Dudley Edwards, Declan Kiberd, Jerusha McCormack, Richard Pine, and David Upchurch, among others. However, as the decade drew to a close, the scholarly calibration of distinctively Irish elements in Wilde's literary works began to become a matter of dispute. In his 2000 survey of emerging trends, Ian Small listed “The Irish Wilde,” along with “The Gay Wilde” and “Wilde & Consumerism,” as significant “recent paradigms” (Recent38, 37-78). Nonetheless,

AbstractThe article considers the relationship between divine will and being as revealed in election, particularly according to Karl Barth's unique formulation of the doctrine. It comes at the salient features of this relationship by way of a public disagreement between Bruce McCormack and Paul Molnar. In agreement with McCormack, the author contends, on the basis of Barth's provocative claim that Jesus Christ is not just object but subject of election, that we cannot speak of God's being apart from his will for humanity, and this from all eternity, or in God's most intimate primordiality. Abstract:
This thesis argues that Barth’s asymmetrical structuring of the Trinity in I/1, his doctrine of election in volume II, his concept of the humanity of Christ as the imago Dei in III/2 and his account of the obedience of the Son being reflected in his incarnate life, as detailed in IV/1 and IV/2, are not just coherent but mutually reinforcing. The thesis demonstrates that Barth uses a nexus of crucial terms, including ‘correspondence’ [Entsprechung], ‘reflection’ [reflex/Abbildung] and ‘overflowing’ [Ueberstroemen], to express that God’s actions and relationships ad extra reveal who God is. Abstract:
Chapter 3 discusses the question: Is the identity of the Son established in God’s decree of election, or is it secured (logically) prior to and independently of that decree? This is the subject of an intense debate within scholarship on the theology of Karl Barth. The chapter offers theological analysis of this debate, probes its foundations and evaluates the adequacy of its supposed basis in biblical exegesis. Accordingly, the chapter first outlines the fascinating theological proposal offered by Bruce L. McCormack, and then surveys the major objections that have been lodged against it. It provides theological analysis of both the ontological claims made and the exegetical foundations upon which those claims rest.
