Abstract:
Classical taxonomy of this parasite is far from relating actual situation in field. Indeed, regard to the diversity of response to diagnosis test, together with the diversity of symptoms encountered in HAT, it is important to elucidated population structure and mating system of this pathogen. We characterised trypanosomes both from stocks isolated by two techniques (KIVI and RI) and biological fluid, using polymorphic microsatellite markers and isoenzymes (gold standard). Isoenzymes were shown unsuitable to differentiate stocks from T. B. Gambiense group 1 since it’s homogeneous. Results from microsatellite markers are consistent with clonal structure, monophyletic and genome stability through time of T. B. Gambiense group 1 pathogens. Microsatellite markers displayed a high specificity which allowed geographic clusters among HAT foci. They also point out that human infectious trypanosomes circulate in parasitological non confirmed patient (who could act as human reservoir of HAT) and a fitness behaviour of trypanosome when face to isolation but could not detected multiple infections. Our results allow us to further investigate correlation between genetic diversity seen in Trypanosoma brucei and diversity of response observed in patients and characterised human serum and drug resistance genes with more microsatellite markers

Abstract:
This research aims to explain the behavior of firm managers as to the voluntary disclosure of cash flows in a French context as well as to evaluate the impact of such disclosures on the value of firms. We first attempted to account for managers' behaviors by referring to the firm's founding theories, i. E. Agency theory, transaction cost theory and stakeholders theory. However, these theories imply that firm managers have but a passive role; in this respect, it therefore seemed more appropriate to analyse the problem focusing on the entrenchment theory and signal theory, which, by contrast, cast managers in a more active and strategic role. We also carried out an empirical study in order to account for voluntary cash flow disclosure in interim reporting within the French market. Thus, we supposed that incentives to publish such information may be explained by factors related to firm structure, its audit, performance and governance. Our results –examining 122 companies over the [1996-2004] period– show that variables such as size, losses, internationally renowned audits and the ratio of independent directors do play a part in the voluntary disclosure of cash flow policy. In addition, the study of managers' behaviors as to the deliberate publication of cash flows cannot be fully grasped without acknowledging the impact of such a disclosure on the value of the firm, in other words, without taking into consideration the behaviors of the main users of the accounting information, to wit, investors. Thus, our purpose was to analyse the information content of cash flows compared to other accounting measurements, more specifically funds from operations and net earnings, within the efficient market hypothesis. We have studied accounting data published by companies listed on the SBF 120 index of Paris Euronext, and shown that cash flows do add incremental information to that provided about funds from operations and earnings. Additionally, they offer predictive capacity for future cash flows. Thus do cash flows constitute a reliable and relevant piece of information in the evaluation of firm performance, hence their interest for investors

Abstract:
It’s mostly related to excessive loading of the patellar tendon, which leads to pain and decreased functional capacity. Physiotherapy treatment aims to reduce pain and restore functional capacity. Infrapatellar straps (IPS) have been utilized for many years to alleviate symptoms during sports activities but there is a lack of research that has compiled reports on effects of usage, which leads to the need of a systematic review. Objective: To describe use and evaluation of IPS in studies on patients with PT and describe reported effects, study quality and preliminary strength of evidence. Method: The PubMed and PEDro databases were searched for articles. Five studies were analyzed considering the review’s objective. Study quality was assessed according to SBU’s checklists. Results: Among the studies three investigated the effect of IPS on pain intensity, two on proprioception and two on indirectly measured tendon load. Short-term outcomes were investigated and the clinical relevance was often unclear when outcomes were statistically significant. Total preliminary strength of evidence was assessed as moderate. Conclusion: Variable effects are shown from IPS usage regarding pain intensity, proprioception and indirectly measured tendon load. More high-quality randomized trials and investigations of long-term effects are needed.

Abstract:
The work deals with the resistance of the VeriFinger comparison algorithm to synthetic fingerprints. The basics of fingerprints, comparison algorithms and synthetic fingerprint generators are gradually analyzed. In total, three experiments were designed to test the resistance of the algorithm using synthetic fingerprints. An application using the VeriFinger algorithm was implemented to evaluate individual experiments. A total of 2 800 000 synthetic fingerprints were generated across all experiments. The first experiment showed that random fingerprint generation was not effective for real fingerprints, but was somewhat sufficient for synthetic fingerprints. The second experiment proved that comparison and the comparison score could be used to estimate the class of the identified fingerprint, and in the third experiment, by narrowing the generation to one class, it raised the total number of matched fingerprints. The results of individual experiments were written and their possible extension was suggested.

Wahlberg, Linus. "Visar Dworkins teori om jämlika resurser lika hänsyn och respekt för alla medborgare? : En analys av Elizabeth S. Andersons kritik mot “luck egalitarianism”, applicerad på Dworkins teori om jämlika resurser." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Avdelningen för praktisk filosofi, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-446937.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter examines the military defenses on the Bluegrass corridor of the Kentucky Central Railroad, which was important for military transportation and communications. State Guards, Home Guards, and Union volunteers encamped in the Cynthiana, Ky., area to guard the railroad, including Camp Bruce. The book describes in detail the establishment and activities of Camp Frazer, one of the first Union camps in Kentucky after neutrality ended. It was organized by Col. Van Derveer’s 35th Ohio Voluntary Infantry in September 1861. The reaction of citizens to these troops is explored in the chapter. The book documents other Union regiments who guarded the railroad, including Col. S. R. Mott’s 118th Ohio infantry, who built stockades for Union squads to protect railroad bridges. The chapter examines the interaction of Union troops occupying the county with local citizens, and the military arrest of secessionists caught sabotaging bridges.

Alessandro Palmieri of the University of Camerino developed (Synlett 2010, 2468) the condensation of a nitro acrylate 1 with a 1,3-dicarbonyl partner 2 to give the furan 3. Chaozhong Li of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 3678) that an alkenyl halide 4 could be cyclized to the furan 5. Ayhan S. Demir of Middle East Technical University established (Chem. Commun. 2010, 46, 8032) that a Au catalyst could catalyze the addition of an amine 7 to a cyanoester 6 to give the pyrrole 8 . Bruce A. Arndtsen of McGill University effected (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 4916) the net three-component coupling of an imine 9, an acid chloride 10, and an alkyne 11 to deliver the pyrrole 12. Bernard Delpech of CNRS Gif-sur-Yvette prepared (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 4760) the pyridine 15 by combining the diene 13 with the incipient carbocation 14. Max Malacria, Vincent Gandon, and Corinne Aubert of UPMC Paris optimized (Synlett 2010, 2314) the internal Co-mediated cyclization of a nitrile alkyne 5 to the tetrasubstituted pyridine 17. Yoshiaki Nakao of Kyoto University and Tamejiro Hiyama, now at Chuo University, effected (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 13666) selective substitution of a preformed pyridine 18 at the C-4 position by coupling with an alkene 19. We showed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 5737) that the anion from deprotonation of a pyridine 21 could be added in a conjugate sense to 22 to give 23. Other particularly useful strategies for further substitution of preformed pyridines have been described by Olafs Daugulis of the University of Houston (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 4277), by Phil S. Baran of Scripps/La Jolla (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 13194), and by Robert G. Bergmann of the University of California, Berkeley, and Jonathan A. Ellman of Yale University (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 7863). K. C. Majumdar of the University of Kalyani developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 3807) the oxidative Pd-catalyzed cylization of 24 to the indole 25. Nan Zheng of the University of Arkansas showed (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 3736) that Fe could be used to catalyze the rearrangement of the azirine 26 to the indole 27.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of synechism in Charles S. Pierce's pragmatism. Pierce frequently remarked that his pragmaticism was intimately related to synechism or the doctrine of continuity. Indeed, Peirce’spent the better part of twenty years working out his synechistic cosmology. According to him, synechism as a logical principle forbids one to consider any inexplicability as a possible explanation, and this is nothing more or less than the assumption behind the scientific enterprise as such, namely, that the world is knowable. The synechistic principle does not deny that there is an element of the inexplicable and of the ultimate and brute in the world. This does not, however, block the road of inquiry, but rather stimulates one to generalize from the experience, to form new hypotheses, because one is convinced that the facts can be understood—that they manifest another mode of being other than brutishness, namely, obedience to rationality and to law.

Abstract:
As alkene metathesis is extended to more and more challenging substrates, improved catalysts and solvents are required. Robert H. Grubbs of Caltech developed (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 441) the diisopropyl complex 1, that efficiently formed the trisubstituted alkene 6 by cross metathesis of 4 with 5. Hervé Clavier and Stephen P. Nolan of ICIQ, Tarragona, and Marc Mauduit of ENSC Rennes found (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 4225) that after cyclization of 7 with the complex 2b, simple filtration of the reaction mixture through silica gel delivered the product 8 containing only 5.5 ppm Ru. The merit of CH2Cl2 as a solvent for alkene metathesis is that the catalysts (e.g. 1 - 3) are very stable. Claire S. Adjiman of Imperial College and Paul C. Taylor of the University of Warwick established (Chem. Commun. 2008, 2806) that although the second generation Grubbs catalyst 3 is not as stable in acetic acid, for the cyclization of 9 to 10 it is a much more active catalyst in acetic acid than in CH2Cl2 . Bruce H. Lipshutz of the University of California, Santa Barbara observed (Adv. Synth. Cat . 2008, 350, 953) that even water could serve as the reaction solvent for the challenging cyclization of 11 to 12, so long as the solubility- enhancing amphiphile PTS was included. Ernesto G. Mata of the Universidad Nacional de Rosario explored (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 2024) resin isolation to optimize cross-metathesis, finding that the acrylate 13 worked particularly well. Karol Grela of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw optimized (Chem. Commun. 2008, 2468) cross-metathesis with a halogenated alkene 16. Jean-Marc Campagne of ENSC Montpellier extended (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 1562) ring-closing metathesis to enynes such as 19. The product diene 20 was a reactive Diels-Alder dienophile. István E. Markó of the Université Catholique de Louvain applied (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 1523) the known (OHL 20070122) ring-closing metathesis of enol ethers to the cyclization of the Tebbe product from 23. The ether 24 was oxidized directly to the lactone 25.

Abstract:
Von Willebrand's disease protects pigs from developing cyclic or permanent coronary thrombosis (C/P-Th) following experimentally induced stenosis and injury (S/I) in an open chest anesthetized pig (Nichols et al, Circ Res., 1986; 59:1526). To confirm that this protection is related specifically to absence of von Willebrand factor (vWF), an IgG kappa monoclonal antibody (MAb) to purified porcine vWF was produced in mice. MAb inhibited platelet aggregation by ristocetin and botrocetin, but not ADP, thrombin, or collagen. MAb was infused into seven normal pigs. Bleeding times (BT) in all pigs were prolonged to &gt;10 min, and platelet agglutinating factor levels as a measure of vWF activity were &lt;2% for approximately 2 hours or longer. There was no significant change of hematocrit, platelet count or Factor VIII coagulant activity. Coronary stenosis was produced by placing a Goldblatt clanp (GC) around the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). A 20-MHz Doppler velocity crystal was placed distal to GC to measure LAD blood flow velocity. The LAD was injured at the GC site with spring loaded forceps. C/P-Th were detected by flow velocity changes and vessels were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Five of seven pigs were given MAb prior to S/I; after S/I, four of these five had no C/P-Th. The fifth pig developed C/P-Th after 2 hours when vWF activity had returned to 10% and BT had shortened to 2.5 min. The other two pigs were given MAb after S/I had produced C/P-Th. The first had total resolution and the second partial resolution of these cyclic thromboses. This S/I technique produced C/P-Th in 8 of 9 normal pigs. Thus, this MAb reduces vWF activity and prevents C/P-Th. This study confirms a direct role of vWF in supporting occlusive coronary thrombosis in this porcine model and suggests reduction of vWF activity could be a therapeutic approach to arterial thrombotic diseases. Abstract:
A Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) for low and intermediate level radioactive waste has been proposed by Ontario Power Generation for the Bruce nuclear site in Ontario, Canada. As proposed the DGR would be constructed at a depth of about 680 m below ground surface within the argillaceous Ordovician limestone of the Cobourg Formation. This paper describes the hydrogeology of the DGR site developed through both site characterization studies and regional-scale numerical modelling analysis. The analysis provides a framework for the assembly and integration of the site-specific geoscientific data and examines the factors that influence the predicted long-term performance of the geosphere barrier. Flow system evolution was accomplished using both the density-dependent FRAC3DVS-OPG flow and transport model and the two-phase gas and water flow computational model TOUGH2-MP. In the geologic framework of the Province of Ontario, the DGR is located on the eastern flank of the Michigan Basin. Borehole logs covering Southern Ontario combined with site-specific data from 6 deep boreholes have been used to define the structural contours and hydrogeologic properties at the regional-scale of the modelled 31 sedimentary strata that may be partially present above the Precambrian crystalline basement rock. The regional-scale domain encompasses an approximately 18500km2 region extending from Lake Huron to Georgian Bay. The groundwater zone below the Devonian includes units containing stagnant water having high concentrations of total dissolved solids that can exceed 300g/L. The Ordovician sediments are significantly under-pressured. The horizontal hydraulic conductivity for the Cobourg limestone is estimated to be 2 × 10−14 m/s based on straddle-packer hydraulic tests. The low advective velocities in the Cobourg and other Ordovician units result in solute transport that is diffusion dominant with Peclet numbers less than 0.003 for a characteristic length of unity. Long-term simulations that consider future glaciation scenarios include the impact of ice thickness and permafrost. Solute transport in the Ordovician limestone and shale was diffusion dominant in all simulations. The Salina formations of the Upper Silurian prevented the deeper penetration of basal meltwater.

Abstract:
As previously reported at ICONE 6 in New Orleans, 1996, and ICONE 9 in Niece, 2001, the use of various maintenance optimization techniques at Bruce has lead to cost effective preventive maintenance applications for complex systems. Innovative practices included greatly reducing Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) costs while maintaining the accuracy of the analysis. The optimization strategy has undergone further evolution and at the present an Integrated Maintenance Program (IMP) is being put in place. Further cost refinement of the station preventive maintenance strategy whereby decisions are based on statistical analysis of historical failure data is being evaluated. A wide range of Operational Research (OR) literature was reviewed for implementation issues and several encouraging areas were found that will assist in the current effort of evaluating maintenance optimization techniques for nuclear power production. The road ahead is expected to consist first of resolving 25 years of data issues and preserving the data via appropriate knowledge system techniques while post war demographics permit experts to input into the system. Subsequent analytical techniques will emphasize total simplicity to obtain the requisite buy in from Corporate Executives who possibly aren’t trained in Operational Research. Case studies of containment airlock seal failures are used to illustrate the direct applicability of stochastic processes. Airlocks and transfer chambers were chosen as they have long been known as high maintenance items. Also, the very significant financial consequences of this type of failure will help to focus the attention of Senior Management on the effort. Despite substantial investment in research, improvement in the design of the seal material or configuration has not been achieved beyond the designs completed in the 1980’s. Overall, the study showed excellent agreement of the relatively quick stochastic methods with the maintenance programs produced at great cost over years of trial and error. The pivotal role of expert opinion via experienced users/problem owners/maintenance engineers in all phases of the method and its application was noted and will be explored in subsequent efforts. The results are displayed via economic alternatives to more easily attract the attention of Maintenance Managers. Graphical overviews of the data demonstrated that substantial insight can be gained by simply organizing the data into statistically meaningful arrays such as histograms. The conclusions highlight several very positive avenues to evaluate at this particular juncture in time.

Abstract:
The traditional brace elements will buckle when subjected to severe earthquakes. Many researchers have been trying to overcome this disadvantage of the traditional brace element since 1970’s. Many types of braces have been developed without buckling under large compressive forces called the buckling restrained brace BRB, or unbonded brace. This type brace includes a steel core, a case that encases the steel core and brace projection, and can enhance both the stiffness and hysteretic damping of a structure to resist seismic loadings. Recently, some investigators have carried out the researches focusing on the procedure of designing buckling restrained braces, quasi dynamic testing and the methods of the connection between the buckling restrained brace and main structure. But, these results can not reflect the effects of the structure with buckling restrained braces during earthquakes. Therefore, the shaking table testing should be done to examine the effects of new BRBs on the seismic responses of a structure. In this study, the reinforced buckling restrained braces were installed on a three-story scaled steel structure in Feng Chia University to perform a series of shaking table tests. The test results illustrate that the new unbond braces provide good protection for structures during earthquakes.

Abstract:
Since 1970’s, many types of braces have been developed without buckling under large compressive forces called the buckling restrained brace BRB, or unbonded brace. Recently, many investigators have made a lot of efforts to look into the behaviors of the buckling restrained brace under quasi-static forces, but few experimental results about shaking table tests of a structure with buckling restrained braces have been published. Therefore, in this study, a series of shaking table tests were carried out in the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, and the issue is focused on observing the seismic responses of a full-scale three-story steel structure with multi-curved reinforced buckling restrained braces subjected to earthquake ground motions. Experimental results show that most column shear forces and displacements had been reduced by the RBRB devices. In addition, the absolute accelerations had also been favorably diminished during earthquakes. It can be proven that the proposed device is suitable for applications of seismic mitigation for structures.

Abstract:
Applicability of different approaches, i.e. nominal stress-, structural hot spot- and effective notch stress approach, for fatigue assessment of welded structures has been discussed. The effective notch stress approach was validated for a cruciform fillet welded and fully penetration welded joint, according to DNV guideline [1]. The same fillet welded joint was further investigated for varying weld sizes. The results show that with changing weld size, there are considerable differences between calculated stresses, and specially calculated fatigue lives, when comparing with nominal stress approach. Further investigations revealed that there is a nonlinear relation between effective notch stress and weld sizes, while comparison of the notch stress and nominal stress approaches indicate that a linear relation is to be expected. Based on the established methodology for the cruciform joint, another joint, i.e. a knee plate located in a horizontal brace of a drilling vessel, was assessed for weld root fatigue. Based on the proposed equations and the linear relation found between the nominal- and the notch stress S-N curves, a weld size providing a longer fatigue life at the weld root, rather than that at the toe, was proposed.

Abstract:
This paper presents the latest results in the design, development and performance characterization of a novel prototype micro-reactor system that is uniquely capable of capturing the transient product evolution history of the fast pyrolysis of biomass products. With strong demand driving the technological development of sustainable energy solutions, the consideration of optimal conversion methodologies for biomass energy feedstocks has received a great deal of attention recent years. [1, 2] The pyrolysis of soft woods, in particular spruce and pine, has emerged as a credible alternative to bio-digestive strategies that are reliant on fermentation processes, typically of corn feedstocks. The design objectives for the micro-reactor system are reviewed, highlighting the multi-physics and multi-disciplinary complexity in designing for transient characterization of the pyrolized products by the micro-reactor system. One of the dominant challenges in the design of the micro-reactor for fast pyrolysis reactions is the requirement of very high heating rates for the feedstock, on the order of 100°C/s. A 1D transient thermal model of the reactor is developed that considers the average particle size and morphology, the initial surface temperature of the reaction surface within the micro-reactor, the heat loss to the ambient atmosphere in the reactor, the heat loss through the contact resistance between the sample and the reaction surface and the thermal capacitance of the reaction surface. A parametric evaluation of the design space was performed using the 1D model in order to identify a preferred range of particle size, reactor surface area and thermal input power. Based on the results for the domain reduction study, multi-physics thermo-mechanical 3D FEA was used to undertake a brute-force optimization process of the final design. The key metric considered in the FEA study was the maximum thermal gradient in the reaction surface and was driven to a minimum value. The thermal response of the prototype micro-reactor has been evaluated using infra-red thermography measurement techniques. Thermographical analysis of the results has demonstrated negligible thermal gradients in the reaction plane up to the maximum reaction setpoint of 450°C. Based on the results of the thermal testing of the micro-reactor, the achieved peak heating rates of the sample have been estimated to be on the order of 400°C/s, meeting and exceeding the design requirement.
