Intracellular degradation of vertebrate ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is accelerated by polyamines, the products of the pathway controlled by ODC. Antizyme, a reversible, tightly binding protein inhibitor of ODC activity, is believed to be involved in this process. Mouse and Trypanosoma brucei ODCs are structurally similar, but the trypanosome enzyme, unlike that of the mouse, is not regulated by intracellular polyamines when expressed in hamster cells (L. Ghoda, D. Sidney, M. Macrae, and P. Coffino, Mol. Cell. Biol. 12:2178-2185, 1992). We found that mouse ODC interacts with antizyme in vitro but trypanosome ODC does not. To localize the region necessary for binding, we made a series of enzymatically active chimeric mouse-trypanosome ODCs and tested them for antizyme interaction. Replacing residues 117 to 140 within the 461-amino-acid mouse ODC sequence with the equivalent region of trypanosome ODC disrupted both antizyme binding and in vivo regulation. Formation of an antizyme-ODC complex is therefore required for regulated degradation.

Multiple researches has have been conducted to analyse gait in scoliosis patients but most of this literature is relevant to lower limb kinematics kinetics and electromyography. Trunk biomechanics documentation is still lacking during gait and side bending movement.
The aim of this study was to elucidate biomechanical analysis including spatiotemporal parameters, kinematics, kinetics (joint moments and Ground Reaction Force (GRF), and electromyography of trunk segments and lower limb during gait and trunk side bending in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients with and without brace application, to find important parameters to implicate in 3-D printing brace design. In this study newly trunk mathematical model was designed by using Schroth anatomical blocks concept. Trunk was divided in upper thorax, middle thorax, lower thorax and lumber segments.
This study included three groups named as Control Group, Scoliosis Group (SG) and Scoliosis Group with Brace (SG WB) Participant from each group perform the same movements following the same experimental settings and protocols. After three-dimensional motion analysis of all the segments of trunk and lower limb, a comparison was made among the groups. Sagittal plane movement and frontal plane movements during level walking and trunk side bending was the targeted movements of this study. All the results were analysed by using Independent Samples Test to compare CG and SG. Because of small sample size SG WB group was not included in statistical analysis.
There was significant asymmetry noticed with p=0.02 for step velocity in two groups. All segment movements were not significantly different in SG than CG. However, Hip joint showed reduced range of motion (ROM) during Right Gait Cycle (RGC) and Left Gait Cycle (LGC). Trunk joint angle at maximum peak value in frontal plane showed significant difference (p=0.036 and p=0.023) at Right Toe off (RTO) during RGC and Right Heel Strike (RHS) during (LGC), respectively, trunk moved away from the thoracic apex side. Joint moments also showed some significant difference with p<0.05 during gait cycle.
Maximum Trunk Bending (MTB) in Right Side Bending (RSB) and Left Side Bending (LSB) was significantly less in SG than CG. Joint moment did not reveal noticeable difference between these two groups during side bending movement.
In this study there was not any finding for GRF statistically significant during level walking and side bending movement, but very slight difference was observed during level walking in medio-lateral direction of GRF. Electromyography pattern (EMG) for side bending movement was different and influenced by brace application in advantage and disadvantage of patient treatment. Integrated Electromyography (iEMG) of muscles including external oblique, erector spine and qudratus lumborum showed the difference in their activation.
Certain significant differences were observed between CG, SG and SG WB. These biomechanical findings will be assisting to design 3D printing scoliosis brace that would be able to reverse patho-biomechanics of three dimensional spine deformity.

Bruce Lee, in speaking of his martial arts philosophy, said, “Be formless, shapeless—like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle. You put in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” This philosophy of martial arts illustrates two broad lessons for water governance. First, water is both a creative and destructive force, and water security requires an awareness of both sides of water. Second, water policies must be as dynamic and adaptive as water itself. Water laws must be more flexible to change with changing water conditions. This chapter discusses improving awareness of both the flow and the crash of water and how to find existing flexibility in water law and improve water law’s adaptive capacity. Finally, water is generous—it enlivens, cleanses, and beautifies. If we are to manage water, we must be water, adaptive and generous. And what better subject of our generosity than water itself. It is essential to life and is perhaps the essential cause and solution to many of life’s problems.

Human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) is caused by subspecies of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei. The disease is restricted to tropical Africa where it is transmitted by the bite of infected tsetse flies (Glossina spp.). Control programmes in the 1960s were very effective, but subsequent relaxation of control measures led to recurrence of epidemic proportions in the 1980s and 1990s. Control is now being regained. Untreated human African trypanosomiasis is almost invariably fatal. Specific treatment depends on the trypanosome subspecies and the stage of the disease. Drugs used for stage 1 include pentamidine and suramin, and for stage 2 include melarsoprol, eflornithine, and nifurtimox, but regimens are not standardized, and treatment is difficult and dangerous; all of the drugs used have many side effects, some potentially lethal.

Internet of things (IoT) is a rapidly emerging architecture connecting smart devices all across the world in various fields like smart homes, smart cities, health sector, security, etc. Security is a very important aspect of IoT. As more and more devices are connecting to the Internet, it becomes a lucrative target for hackers. The communication between the various devices, nodes, and between nodes and the cloud, needs to be secured. A combination of public and private key cryptography systems is used to secure the IoT networks. The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is used for encrypting the data in transit. However, the AES is known to be prone to brute force attacks, side channel attacks, and other forms of cryptanalysis. This chapter proposes a more secure AES algorithm with randomised round keys, which provides better security with negligible overheads, and is ideal for use in IoT networks.

This time was remarkable for the variety of biblical responses to the war. Southern women struggled with their zeal for war, which many believed was inappropriate. If many wanted war, others drew back from the conflict, or at least worried about what the war would do to the nation, regardless of which side God was on. Just as northern preachers were sharpening their exegesis for battle, southerners did the same, as did Mormons, who hurled biblical attacks on both North and South from the West.

Soldiers returning from the war who longed to be a part of something life-affirming and “pure” rushed into the ranks of the wildlife profession. In the fall of 1945 and spring of 1946, the Professor’s classes were packed beyond his abilities to teach. He had to turn some students away. He relied more on Robert McCabe, sought additional assistants, and tried to reduce his outside commitments. But his national stature had grown to the point where he could not turn away some recognition and its attendant duties. He was elected honorary vice president of the American Forestry Association and president of the Ecological Society of America. Periodically, with increasing frequency and fury, pains exploded on the left side of Aldo’s face. It was like “somebody rising suddenly from behind a bush and bashing you with a sledgehammer.” The pain would stop him in midsentence. He had to shut his eyes and put pressure on the side of his face until the pain passed. Doctors diagnosed it as tic douloureux, or facial neuralgia, a swelling around one of the main facial nerves. They didn’t know what caused it or what to do about it. Aldo decided to wait and see if a summer’s ease at home and at the Shack would erase the pain and make surgery unnecessary. Ten years of work and affectionate tending had radically changed the landscape of the Shack. Nearly thirty thousand trees and shrubs thrived in patterns that were both random (never in rows) and intentional (the patches of flora fit the soils and the curves of the landscape). Overgrowth hid the river from view, pines defined parts of the land, and the experimental prairie had taken hold. As young Estella’s studies and social life began to envelop her, Aldo and Estella went to the Shack more and more as a twosome. Grandparents now, the Leopolds did get to babysit Bruce Carl Leopold that summer—the eldest child of Luna and his wife, Carolyn Clugston Leopold. For part of the time they took him to the Shack, and, as always, Aldo was able to relax, and his pains were somewhat relieved.

With the exponential growth of the Internet and e-commerce, the need for secure transactions has become a necessity for both consumer and business. Even though there have been advances in security technology, one aspect remains constant: passwords still play a central role in system security. The difficulty with passwords is that all too often they are the easiest security mechanism to defeat. Kevin Mitnick, notably the most recognized computer hacker, made the following statement concerning humans and their passwords: …the human side of computer security is easily exploited and constantly overlooked. Companies spend millions of dollars on firewalls, encryption and secure access devices, and it’s money wasted, because none of these measures addresses the weakest link in the security chain. (Poulsen, 2000) Without secure passwords, e-commerce sites invite online criminals to attempt fraudulent schemes that mimic the goods and services that legitimate e-commerce merchants offer. With increasing numbers of users on an increasing array of e-commerce sites, often requiring the use of passwords, users often choose to reuse the same simplistic password, and do so on multiple sites (Campbell, Calvert, & Boswell, 2003). For most computerized systems, passwords are the first line of defense against hackers or intruders (Horowitz, 2001). There have been numerous published articles that have created guidelines on how to create better or safer passwords with the following recommendations: 1. passwords should be memorized and not written down; 2. passwords should be an eight- or nine-character word or phrase, and end users should randomly add 3. passwords should contain a mixture of letters (both upper- and lowercase), numbers, and punctuation characters; and 4. passwords should never be words that can be commonly found in a dictionary. But if an individual adheres to security experts’ suggestions about password authentication, it usually involves a trade-off. If a password is easy to create and remember, it is most likely that it is easy for others to guess or a hacker to crack. Eventually, any password can be cracked. Password crackers use a variety of methods and tools that can include guessing, dictionary lists, or brute force attacks. Dictionary lists are created by using an automated program that includes a text file of words that are common in a dictionary. The program repeatedly attempts to log on to the target system, using a different word from the text file on each attempt. A brute force attack is a variation of the dictionary attacks, but it is designed to determine passwords that may not be included in the text file. In a brute force attack, the attacker uses an automated program that generates hashes or encrypted values for all possible passwords and compares them to the values in the password file (Conklin, White, Cothren, Williams, & Davis, 2004). Unfortunately, many of the deficiencies of password authentication systems arise from the limitations of human cognitive ability (Pond, Podd, Bunnell, & Henderson, 2000). The requirements to remember long and complicated passwords are contrary to a well-known property of human memory. First, the capacity of human memory in its capacity to remember a sequence of items is temporally limited, with a short-term capacity of around seven items plus or minus two (Kanaley, 2001). Second, when humans remember a sequence of items, those items cannot be drawn from an arbitrary and unfamiliar range, but must be familiar “chunks” such as words or familiar symbols. Third, the human memory thrives on redundancy. In fact, studies have shown that individuals’ short-term memory will retain a password for approximately 30 seconds, thereby requiring individuals to attempt to memorize their passwords immediately (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968).

This chapter extends the anti-anti-luckist programme to political philosophy, and to the doctrine of luck egalitarianism in particular. Luck egalitarianism affirms that unchosen relative inequalities between agents are unjust. It condemns inequalities that are due to ‘brute luck’, and upholds inequalities that are due to ‘option luck’. Though it can be easily enough stated, luck egalitarianism is actually a complex theory with two separate components: egalitarianism and anti-luckism. Standard luck egalitarianism’s commitment to pairwise comparisons makes it vulnerable to what Susan Hurley calls the ‘Boring Problem’. The Boring Problem points out that any two agents in a pairwise comparison are bound to lack control over the relevant income gap between them, because each of them controls, at best, only one side of that comparison. Though Hurley herself is relatively dismissive of the Boring Problem, it is contended here that, when it is properly appreciated, it inflicts huge damage on luck egalitarianism, which needs in turn to be re-organized as a ‘baseline-sensitive’ theory that dispenses with pairwise comparisons. Baseline-sensitive luck egalitarianism makes decent progress on a number of critical fronts, particularly Saul Smilansky’s ‘Paradox of the Baseline’. But even this form of luck egalitarianism is still open to a worry about how it understands the relationship between its egalitarian default and its case for permissible inequalities, and it has less to say than it should about the structural aspects of a social system that generate inequalities.

By using a damper at the relation story for detached houses, the damping effects for compression side decrease. The reason is that the compressive force is dissipated by deformation, for example, by bending in case of using a brace. So that, the damper was developed that exercise efforts in the tensile direction only, with automatic stroke return. By using this damper, the design for the brace become easier because the action of the tensile force is the only consideration. The damper uses Binghum Material with the unique physical property. It allows the energy dissipation and the self restoration to operate as one without a complex mechanism. The real scaled damper was designed applicable to detached houses. It has rated reaction force of 20kN and maximum stroke of 50mm. And the loading test was performed two patterns. One was only the damper in the static and the dynamic condition, another was steel frame with the damper. The results showed that this damper has made possible easier design for the brace, construction and the highly effective for the vibration control of detached houses.

The buckling restrained brace (BRB) that has been worldwide adopted as a structural control device possesses excellent energy dissipation mechanism and can overcome the disadvantages of the traditional brace. However, the traditional BRB is a fully close design, it is therefore impossible to inspect the condition of the internal components during manufacturing and after earthquakes. This study proposed an all-steel buckling restrained brace with windowed lateral support elements that allow inspecting the internal condition of the BRB. We also studied the optimization in selecting the sizes and positions of the windows in the internal components without affecting its strength to provide an economically feasible all-steel BRB that is convenient for manufacturing and installation and meets the rigorous testing protocols. The all-steel BRB consists of the steel core, lateral support and constraining elements. In this study, scaled all-steel BRBs were tested under cyclic loadings by using an MTS 250 kN test machine. Test results showed that the mechanical behavior of the BRB with windows on the sides of lateral support elements is stable and that damage always occurred at the energy dissipation sections after low cycle fatigue tests. The difference between tensile and compressive forces was small under identical strain, and the accumulated inelastic deformation exceeded the requirement of test protocols. These test results confirm that the windows opened on the proposed BRB have insignificant effects on the strength of the device and that the proposed device meets the design requirement and is thus considered as a stable energy dissipative apparatus.

The degradation of Unit 4 SG tubing by IGA/SCC has recently limited both the operating period and end of life predictions for Unit 4 since restart in late 2003. SG4 has experienced the most significant damage with substantial increases in both initiation and growth rates from 2005 through the spring of 2007. A detailed review of the occurrence of circumferential OD IGA/SCC at the RTZ in the HL TTS region of Bruce 4 steam generator tubes has led a conclusion that it is probable that the IGA/SCC has been the result of attack by partially reduced sulfur species such as tetrathionates and thiosulfates during periods of low temperature exposure. It is believed that attack of this type has most likely occurred during startup evolutions following outages as the result the development of aggressive reduced sulfur species in the TTS region during periods when the boilers were fully drained for maintenance activities. The modification of outage practices to limit secondary side oxygen ingress in the spring of 2007 has arrested the degradation and has had significant affects on the allowable operating interval and end of life predictions for the entire unit.

This paper deals with analysis of the OC4 DeepCWind semi-submersible wind turbine, which is provided by NREL through the OC4 project. This concept is a three-column semi-submersible supporting a 5 MW wind turbine on an additional central column. The fact that the semi-submersible floater needs a large water line restoring moment to achieve sufficient stability and the control of the cost based on the steel weight make the design of braces and pontoons very challenging. Effective methods are needed to check the strength of the brace system based on the response forces and moments in the braces under different design environmental conditions, while the floating wind turbine is needed to be considered as an aero-hydro-servo-elastic system. A novel modeling methodology based on the code Simo/Riflex is introduced in this paper. Simo/Riflex is a state-of-the-art code that can account for the coupling effect between rigid body motions and slender structures (e.g. mooring lines, braces and blades) in the time-domain. Simo/Riflex can be combined with Aerodyn, which is a state-of-the-art aerodynamic code, to model the floating wind turbine as an aero-hydro-servo-elastic system, as well as be combined with simplified aerodynamic codes (e.g.TDHMILL) to improve the efficiency of the numerical simulation. The novel modeling method can give the forces and moments in the brace system of the floater under hydrodynamic and aerodynamic loads in the time-domain. In order to get the structural response of the braces, the side columns and the central supporting column are modeled as independent rigid bodies in Simo while the braces are modeled by beam elements in Riflex. Master and slave relationship is applied at the joints in between of the columns and braces. As an application example, the novel modeling method based on the code Simo/Riflex+TDHMILL, which is capable of modeling the floating wind turbine as an aero-hydro-elastic system, has been used to carry out Ultimate Limit State (ULS) design check for the brace system of the OC4 DeepCWind semi-submersible wind turbine based on relevant standards, i.e. NORSOK N00-3, NORSOK N-004, IEC61400-1, IEC61400-3. The modeling method can also be used by other codes which have similar features as Simo/Riflex.

Abstract The objective of this paper is to efficiently perform the reliability assessment of shell and tube heat exchangers. Although inexpensive empirical/analytical heat exchanger models exist and could be used for brute force Monte-Carlo simulations (MCS) based reliability analysis, they typically do not characterize the shell side flow accurately. Hence, higher fidelity models are often needed for predicting the shell and tube heat exchanger performance with a desired level of accuracy. These higher fidelity models are generally associated with higher computational costs, making them impractical for MCS-based reliability analysis. To circumvent this problem, a multi-fidelity technique leveraging the lower and higher fidelity models is proposed to locally construct the failure boundaries using support vector machines (SVM). For this purpose, an adaptive sampling scheme, which explores the regions of inconsistency between failure boundaries from lower and higher fidelity models, is developed.

To protect against brute force attacks, modern password-based authentication systems usually employ mechanisms known as Password Hashing Schemes (PHS). Basically, a PHS is a cryptographic algorithm that generates a sequence of pseudorandom bits from a user-defined password, allowing the user to configure the computational costs involved in the process aiming to raise the costs of attackers testing multiple passwords trying to guess the correct one. In this context, the goal of this research effort is to propose a novel and superior PHS alternative. Specifically, the objective is to improve the Lyra algorithm, a PHS built upon cryptographic sponges whose project counted with the authors' participation. The resulting solution, called Lyra2, preserves the efficiency and flexibility of Lyra, and it brings important improvements when compared to its predecessor: (1) it allows a higher security level against attack venues involving time-memory trade-offs; (2) it includes tweaks for increasing the costs involved in the construction of dedicated hardware to attack; (3) it balances resistance against side-channel threats and attacks relying on cheaper (and, hence, slower) storage devices. Besides describing the algorithm's design rationale in detail, the thesis also includes a detailed analysis of its security and performance.

The in-plane bending behaviour of concrete-filled circular hollow section (CHS) T-joints was examined in this paper. The main failure mode, the punching shear of the chord-wall, was observed from the test of four large-scale joints with the diameter ratio of brace to chord (β) ranging from 0.44 to 0.85. The tube-wall deformation was measured to assess the governing failure mode of the composite joints. Complementary finite element (FE) methodology was verified against the experimental findings and the validated FE models were used to further investigate the mechanical behaviour and the design methodology. The feasibility to apply a fracture criterion in the material-level to a large-scale structural simulation was evaluated. The validated FE modes could successfully capture the tube-wall fracture initiation and propagation. Based on both experimental and numerical investigations, it was shown that the capacity of composite joints was governed by the ultimate strength limit, i.e. punching shear strength, due to the infill concrete that mitigated both inward and outward deformation on the compressive and tensile sides, respectively. The analytical model was established to reveal the composite actions between the tube and the inner concrete, and to elaborate the development of the flexural section-resistance. Finally, the design equation was proposed and could well predict the moment capacity.

In the present study, the influence of various scenarios of supply ship collisions, namely, bow, stern and also broad-side impacts on a jacket-pile-soil system is investigated. In the previous study of ship impact on an 8-leg North-Sea Jacket Platform by Amdahl et al. [2] and also other authors, the effect of jacket-pile-soil interaction was not considered. The collision points on the jacket structure are also taken as joints and mid-span of leg, horizontal and vertical braces, namely, hard and soft impact points. The speed and the weight of the colliding vessel are also varied for typical supply vessels. Several supply ship collision analyses are carried out for bow, stern and broad-side impact scenarios on an 8-leg North-sea Jacket platform It is observed that by taking into account the jacket-pile-soil interaction effects, in particular in softer clay soils the amplitude of displacement response after supply ship impact at the deck level is increased due to yield in the upper soil layers. Contrary to this finding, less linear dynamic effects can be seen in the studied jacket-pile-soil system subjected to the supply ship impact. It can also be concluded that for soft impact scenario, the dynamic effects in the global response of the platform located in the mainly OC clayey soil may be much less than those for hard impact scenario on the same platform. For instance, for a brace impact at its mid-span, a less significant dynamic effect has been observed than for a leg impact. The duration of impact in such cases is shown to play an important role in determining the dynamic influence of the platform response. The relative energy absorption of the platform is shown to be more for broad-side loading. It is shown that the global response of the jacket platform during the collision with a supply vessel might depend largely on the scenario of the impact and to some extent on the pile-soil behavior. It is found that for the bow and stern impact scenarios, the energy contribution of the local member dent or buckling might be more significant than for the broad-side loading for which the global frame energy contribution and the overall inertia effect of the platform might be a dominant factor.

Rack Phase Difference or RPD may occur during jacking up at a location when the jack-up spudcan is eccentrically supported on the bottom or has lateral offset and the resulting moment and shear is carried essentially by the horizontal guide reactions. The RPD is the difference in vertical positions of rack teeth of different chords of one leg. This is a result of vertical shear deformation of the adjacent chords of one leg of a trussed jack-up. Among the causes of RPD the following are common: uneven or sloping seabed, preexisting spudcan holes, leg offset, rapid penetration, uneven jacking force on different chords of a leg, scour etc. While jacking up at a location, operating procedures normally dictate that the RPD be measured. When there is significant RPD, it means the leg chords are not centrally placed within the legwell area but one side could be touching the upper guide while the opposite side is in contact with the lower guides. There is a safe limit of the RPD that is normally specified for a given jack-up that has to be kept in mind while jacking up at a location. For a jack-up fitted with rack chocks, once at the elevated condition, the jack-up is designed to take up the moment produced at the legs due to the environmental loads by the vertical couple at the chocks and pinions rather than the horizontal couple at the guides. As a result, the brace size requirement is normally lower than units that do not have the chocks. For these units RPD becomes all the more important as it could be built-in unless suitable mitigating measures were taken before the chocks are engaged. The built-in RPD could affect the strength for design environmental loads. Unfortunately, the most commonly used guidelines for jack-up design such as SNAME T&R 5-5A, ISO 19905-1 or DNV OS-C104 do not have any detailed discussion on the topic. HSE Research Report 289 prepared by MSL Engineering has a good technical description of this phenomenon and some general qualitative guidelines. There are some studies published in the public domain that have details of RPD analysis. However, most of these papers deal with very simplified modeling of only one leg of the jack-up and idealized behavior. The present paper discusses complete and more realistic analysis of a 3D model of the jack-up that uses non-linear analysis methods for including large deformations and rotations. The nonlinearities come about due to physical reasons, such as pinion-rack contact is compression only and guide contact is also compression only with a gap. In addition, one may like to include nonlinearities due to geometric stiffness for large deformations and plasticity effects. Geometric stiffness allows it to include so-called P-delta effects and simulate buckling behavior of beam elements. The results of such 3D non-linear analysis for various levels of assumptions are compared with a more traditional single leg analysis. The paper brings out the important differences in behavior of these two types of models and discusses the importance of those in the analysis results. The authors think that the meaning of RPD has to be understood properly in relationship with moment or shear carrying capacity at the spudcan for a given jack-up. The behavior of a trussed leg jack-up depends heavily on the bracing pattern, chord and bay spacing as well as the size of the braces. The paper discusses these aspects also. Finally, although the analysis is for one particular jack-up, it recommends the most appropriate modeling for RPD analysis for similar jack-up rigs that could be beneficial to other rigs.
