Abstract:
Diagnosing a man who has travelled back from the future and who, in the present, speaks of the future as the past causes no problems: paranoid schizophrenia. Thus is Bruce Willis misunderstood in Twelve Monkeys (1995). Neither this, nor Brad Pitt as a patient with schizophrenia should distract us; once more we have a film in which a psychiatrist develops a dubious relationship with a patient. Despite evidence of the destructive impact on patients (Russell, 1993; Jehu, 1994), in films it has become almost normal.

Abstract:
Men’s upper body underwear and the depiction of grime, dirt and blood on costumes have a long tradition in Hollywood films. This article explores the 34 undershirts worn by Bruce Willis and his stuntman in the 1988 action film Die Hard from the points of view of the maker, designer, actor, curator and spectator. The image of McClane and the undershirt became iconic in their depiction of a white, working-class, heroic masculinity. One of the many undershirts used in the film was donated to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Culture costume collection. This one artefact and the 33 ‘lost’ doubles hold more clues to the undershirt’s past than the obvious connection to a major star; the exhibited object also brings the viewer into physical proximity with the art of Hollywood filmmaking. This article queries the different ‘authenticities’ of the garment, from its material believability as evidence of the character’s progression through the film, to its cultural signification legitimized by the perspectives of the makers and audiences, to its role as artefact authenticated by the museum and/or viewer. Analysis is correspondingly divided into costume in context, costume in production, costume as film image and costume as artefact.

Abstract:
The Maghrib in the New Century: Identity, Religion, and Politics offers atimely addition to the literature on North Africa. Edited by Bruce Maddy-Weitzman and Daniel Zisenwine, this collection explores the socioeconomicand political challenges facing North Africa in the twenty-first century. Theeditors have divided the book into four sections broadly concerned with historyand identity; the status of the ruling regimes in the face of processessuch as globalization and Islamism; economic development; and the NorthAfrican presence in France.Benjamin Stora’s introduction to the collection neatly sums up many ofthe issues this region faces, including the aftereffects of colonialism, the falloutfrom the Algerian civil war, identity movements and the questionedlegitimacy of ruling regimes, emigration, terrorism, and battles overwomen’sstatus. In the first section, Mickael Bensadoun analyzes Moroccan nationalidentity under the nascent rule ofMohammedVI. This is followed by RobertMortimer’s examination of Algerian identity through literature. Maddy-Weitzman’s essay provides an insightful discussion of how Berber/Amazighactivists have sought to construct Amazigh identity in both Algeria andMorocco by reinterpreting history. The collection segues into a longer section focusing on the politicalchallenges facing the region’s dictatorial regimes, particularly inAlgeria andMorocco. In the fallout from the Algerian civil war, analyses of the currentsituation in Algeria by Gideon Gera, Louisa Aït-Hamadouche, and YahiaZoubir are particularly welcome. Zisenwine analyzes the first eight years ofMohammed VI’s rule, while Michael Willis gives a thorough overview ofthat country’s Islamist movements. Finally, in one of the few pieces to concentrateon Tunisia,Michele PennerAngrist offers a number of astute explanationsfor the strength of the Ben Ali regime ...

Abstract:
We report the investigation of the organisation of proper names in two aphasic patients (NBC and FBI). The performance of both patients on spoken word to written word matching tasks was inconsistent, affected by presentation rate and semantic relatedness of the competing responses, all hallmarks of a refractory semantic access dysphasia. In a series of experiments we explored the semantic relatedness effects within their proper name vocabulary, including brand names and person names. First we demonstrated the interaction between very fine grain organisation and personal experience, with one patient with a special interest in the cinema demonstrating higher error rates when identifying the names of actors working in a similar film genre (e.g. action movies: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson) than those working in different genres (e.g. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gregory Peck, Robin Williams, Gene Kelly). Second we compared directly two potential principles of semantic organisation – taxonomic and thematic. Furthermore we considered these principles of organisation in the context of the individuals' personal knowledge base. We selected topics matching the interests and experience of each patient, namely cinema and literature (NBC) and naval history (FBI). The stimulus items were arranged in taxonomic arrays (e.g. Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Agatha Christie), thematic arrays (e.g. Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, Mr Darcy), and unrelated arrays (e.g. Jane Austen, Wuthering Heights, Hercule Poirot). We documented that different patterns of taxonomic and thematic organisation were constrained by whether the individual has limited knowledge, moderate knowledge or detailed knowledge of a particular vocabulary. It is suggested that moderate proper name knowledge is primarily organised by taxonomy whereas extensive experience results in a more detailed knowledge base in which theme is a powerful organising principle.

Abstract:
For the first time the bryoflora of oasis Molodyoznyi (Enderby Land, Antarctica) was investigated in details. Detailed field studies in 2010–2013, generalization of literature data and study of collections from Bryological Herbarium of Komarov Botanical Institute (LE) resulted in records of eight moss species. Four species (Bryum archangelicum Bruch et Schimp., B. argenteum Bruch et Schimp., Coscinodon lawianus (J. H. Willis) Ochyra и Schistidium antarctici (Card.) L. I. Savicz et Smirnova) are new for oasis Molodyoznyi. Coscinodon lawianus and Schistidium antarctici are new for Enderby Land. Representative specimens and data on habitats and associated species are provided. The moss vegetation of oasis Molodyoznyi is very poor and typical for continental coastal oases of Antarctica. The most common mosses are Ceratodon purpureus and Bryum pseudotriquetrum. Bryum argenteum, Coscinodon lawianus and Schistidium antarctici are rare in oasis Molodyoznyi and Hennediella heimii (Hedw.) R. H. Zander and Orthogrimmia sessitana (De Not.) Ochyra et Żarnowiec are known for oasis Molodyoznyi from the literature only.

Abstract:
This essay accounts for the lives of atist couple Carolina Benedicks Bruce (1856-1935) and William Blair Bruce (1859-1906). The perspective emerges from both Griselda Pollock’s theories on female artists as from Yvonne Hirdman’s gender contract. The essay is made out in the form of a biography, with focus on aspects of gender roles, class and identity. The material consists of letters written by the couple and their families, as well as Carolina’s diaries.    Carolina Benedicks Bruce was born into the wealthy Benedicks family  from Stockholm and Gysinge. At Grez she met William Blair Bruce in 1885. William was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and was sent to France by his family for artistic education in his twenties. They built a home together at Gotland; Brucebo. They conducted themselves liberally to the current norms of gender roles, class and identity aspects of the time. They created their own path, to be able to do what they were passionate about.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Cyberpunk literature explores the effects that developments in technology will have on the lives of individuals in the future. Technology is seen as having the potential to be of benefit to society, but it is also seen as a dangerous tool that can be used to severely limit humanity's freedom. Most of the characters in the texts I examine wish to perpetuate the boundaries that contain them in a desperate search for stability. Only a few individuals manage to move beyond the boundaries created by multinational corporations that use technology, drugs or religion for their own benefit. This thesis will provide a definition of cyberpunk and explore its development from science fiction and postmodern writing. The influence of postmodern thinking on cyberpunk literature can be seen in its move from stability to fluidity, and in its insistence on the impossibility of creating fixed boundaries. Cyberpunk does not see the future of humanity as stable, and argues that it will be necessary for humanity to move beyond the boundaries that contain it. The novels I discuss present different views concerning the nature of humanity's merging with technology. One view is that humanity is moving towards a posthuman future, while some argue that humanity is not discarded, but that these characters have merely evolved to the next step in the natural development of humankind. Both these views deal with constant change, a notion advocated by both postmodernism and cyberpunk.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: "Cyberpunk" literatuur ondersoek die uitwerking wat tegnologiese ontwikkeling in die toekoms op die lewens van individue sal hê.

Murray, Katie. "Memorials of endurance and adventure : exhibiting British polar exploration, 1819-c.1939." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/11087.

Full text
Abstract:
Over eighty polar-themed exhibitions were held in Britain between 1819 and the 1930s, a time of intense exploration of both the Arctic and Antarctic. These varied from panoramas and human exhibits to displays of ‘relics', equipment, photographs and artwork, waxworks and displays shown as part of a Great Exhibition. This period also saw the creation of the first dedicated polar museums. These displays were visited by thousands of people throughout the country, helping to mediate the subject of exploration for a public audience. Despite this, the role exhibitions played in forming popular views of the polar regions has not been fully assessed. This thesis addresses this gap. It is the first to consider all the polar exhibitions held during this period as a collective body, making it possible to study how they developed over time and in response to changing circumstances. The thesis uses a variety of archival sources to both reconstruct the displays and place them in their historical and museological contexts. The study shows that exhibitions evolved in response to changes both in the museum sector and in exploration culture. It demonstrates that, while they were originally identified with the shows of the entertainment industry, polar exhibitions began to take on more of the characteristics of museum displays. At the same time their dominant themes changed; the natural world was relegated in favour of ideas relating to the human experience of the regions such as heroism, adventure and everyday life in an exotic environment. While other media may have been more effective in disseminating ideas about exploration, visitors could find the experience of visiting an exhibition more compelling. This thesis contributes to our understanding of this distinct role that exhibitions played in presenting the polar regions to the British public.

Martin, Shirley Helen. "Freedom to obey : the obedience of Christ as the reflection of the obedience of the Son in Karl Barth's 'Church dogmatics'." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/762.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that Barth’s asymmetrical structuring of the Trinity in I/1, his doctrine of election in volume II, his concept of the humanity of Christ as the imago Dei in III/2 and his account of the obedience of the Son being reflected in his incarnate life, as detailed in IV/1 and IV/2, are not just coherent but mutually reinforcing. The thesis demonstrates that Barth uses a nexus of crucial terms, including ‘correspondence’ [Entsprechung], ‘reflection’ [reflex/Abbildung] and ‘overflowing’ [Ueberstroemen], to express that God’s actions and relationships ad extra reveal who God is. The concept of ‘correspondence’, tentatively present in the first two volumes, gathers pace through III/2 and achieves full force in volume IV, where the obedience of Christ in IV/2 ‘reflects’ or ‘mirrors’ the obedience of the Son in IV/1. Crucially, the fact that the economic Trinity ‘reflects’ the immanent Trinity, or (differently stated) that the immanent Trinity ‘overflows’ into the economy, establishes a direction, an asymmetry, to the relationship of ‘correspondence’. In ch. II of the thesis we argue that the asymmetry developed in the doctrine of the Trinity in I/1 is the basis for this asymmetric correspondence. Barth describes the triune life as one of giving and receiving existence, suggesting a divine order with an irreversible direction, an asymmetric order. This is shown to be particularly evident in Barth’s defence of the filioque clause which enables him to claim that the Spirit is the one in whom the ruling Father and obedient Son are united ad intra. On this basis we argue, in ch. III, that, when Barth revises his doctrine of election, he comes to see it as the event of triune reflection: the Father, Son and Spirit electing to reflect who they are with a direction of determination, an asymmetry, which is irreversible. In this respect we argue against Bruce McCormack, who sees election as the event in which God elects triunity. In ch. IV we read Barth’s III/2 account of the humanity of Christ as the imago Die, as an attempt to demonstrate that God’s economy of salvation corresponds to who he is. This theme comes into full focus in the first two part-volumes of volume IV, explored here in ch. V. The obedience of Christ reflects, corresponds to, the obedience of the Son. There is obedience in God. This concept, which so mystifies Paul Molnar and Rowan Williams, is shown to be theologically consistent with a doctrine articulated by Barth some thirty years previously: his asymmetrically structured doctrine of the Trinity.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis investigates the music and career of Jeffrey Lewis (born 1942). The thesis is broadly divided into three sections. First is an account of the composer’s life, told mainly through an overview of his works, but also through a sketch of his early years in South Wales, his studies in Cardiff, Darmstadt, Kraków and Paris, his academic career in Leeds and Bangor, and his subsequent early retirement from academia. There follows a more detailed study of six works from the period 1978 – 1985, during which certain features of Lewis’s musical language came to the fore, perhaps most notably a very individual and instantly recognisable use of modal language. After an Epilogue, the thesis concludes with an Appendix in the form of a Catalogue in which all Lewis’s known compositions are listed, together with details of performances, broadcasts and recordings. Lewis’s music often plays with our temporal expectations; the close interrelationship between texture, structure, harmony and melody, and its effect upon our perception of the passage of time, are explored in the main analyses. These are conducted partly by means of comparison with other works by Lewis or his contemporaries. Memoria is examined in relation to a similarly tranquil score, Naaotwá Lalá, by Giles Swayne. The following chapter discusses the extra-musical inspiration for Epitaph for Abelard and Heloise, whose relationship to Tableau is then explored in the next. The difficulties of creating a large-scale structure that unifies the work’s various harmonic elements are also investigated. The analysis of Carmen Paschale considers it in relation to Lewis’s other choral music, whilst the final analytical chapter compares and contrasts two three-movement works, the Piano Trio and the Fantasy for solo piano. Lewis’s melodic writing in the Piano Trio is discussed in relation to that of James MacMillan, and the origins of the first movement of Fantasy in Oliver Knussen’s Sonya’s Lullaby are explored. In the Epilogue, the possible reasons for Lewis’s current neglect are explored, various influences on Lewis’s musical thinking are laid out, and his achievements are assessed.

Abstract:
An experimental program has been completed to study the behaviour of sheath wall temperatures in the Bruce Power Station Low Void Reactivity Fuel (shortened hereafter to Bruce LVRF) bundles under post-dryout (PDO) heat-transfer conditions. The experiment was conducted with an electrically heated simulator of a string of nine Bruce LVRF bundles, installed in the MR-3 Freon heat transfer loop at the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL), Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). The loop used Freon R-134a as a coolant to simulate typical flow conditions in CANDU® nuclear power stations. The simulator had an axially uniform heat flux profile. Two radial heat flux profiles were tested: a fresh Bruce LVRF profile and a fresh natural uranium (NU) profile. For a given set of flow conditions, the channel power was set above the critical power to achieve dryout, while heater-element wall temperatures were recorded at various overpower levels using sliding thermocouples. The maximum experimental overpower achieved was 64%. For the conditions tested, the results showed that initial dryout occurred at an inner-ring element at low flows and an outer-ring element facing internal subchannels at high flows. Dry-patches (regions of dryout) spread with increasing channel power; maximum wall temperatures were observed at the downstream end of the simulator, and immediately upstream of the mid-bundle spacer plane. In general, maximum wall temperatures were observed at the outer-ring elements facing the internal subchannels. The maximum water-equivalent temperature obtained in the test, at an overpower level of 64%, was significantly below the acceptable maximum temperature, indicating that the integrity of the Bruce LVRF will be maintained at PDO conditions. Therefore, the Bruce LVRF exhibits good PDO heat transfer performance.

Abstract:
Abstract Female athletes are more likely to incur a knee injury compared to men when competing in the same sport. The increased risk is due to anatomical, biomechanical and hormonal differences between males and females. Women anatomically, have wider hips and this creates a greater quadriceps angle, which is the angle measured between the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), and a line that passes through the tibia trubercle and the middle of the patella (kneecap). Consequently, when landing after a jump, or making sudden movement, women tend to turn their feet inwards to compensate for a greater bending moment and this can result in knee injuries. This work involved using a prophylactic brace to retrain the muscle memory of the leg and thereby promote correct landing technique. The brace geometry was based on data collected from 20 previous women athletes and was 3D printed using ABS to allow some basic customization. However, even though the results were somewhat promising, they were statistically inconclusive due to unforeseen braced design issues. Consequently, a new brace will be redesigned using the feedback from the participants and a new study will be undertaken.

Abstract:
Idiopathic scoliosis is a deformity of the spine that affects 2–3% of adolescents. The treatment of scoliosis often requires the use of a rigid brace to align the spine and prevent progression of the deformation. The most common brace, referred to as the Boston brace, has a high success rate in preventing progression of the scoliotic curve. The common root failure is lack of patient compliance in wearing the brace for the prescribed time. This lack in compliance is due to patient discomfort, both physically and emotional, and the patients’ limited ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) when wearing the brace. The likelihood of needing surgery increases dramatically when bracing is unsuccessful. We seek to improve patients’ comfort by designing a brace that improves range of motion, while remaining stiff in the corrective direction. Primary ranges of motion were acquired using a motion capture system. A kinematic analysis was performed using homogeneous transformations and screw theory to determine primary screw axes of the motions. The required lateral stiffness for the brace was found in literature. Compliant mechanisms are used because they can apply the corrective force, but also allow the patients some range of motion. The mechanism implementation was characterized using finite element analysis and compared to a physical model test. Initial findings confirm that compliant mechanisms are suitable for the application of a scoliosis brace. We have found that the proposed brace can apply the necessary forces at reasonable displacements. The proposed brace will not allow the patient a full range of motion, but we believe that it will achieve an improved range of motion that will increase a patient’s ability to perform activities of daily living.

Abstract:
The traditional brace elements will buckle when subjected to severe earthquakes. Many researchers have been trying to overcome this disadvantage of the traditional brace element since 1970’s. Many types of braces have been developed without buckling under large compressive forces called the buckling restrained brace BRB, or unbonded brace. This type brace includes a steel core, a case that encases the steel core and brace projection, and can enhance both the stiffness and hysteretic damping of a structure to resist seismic loadings. Recently, some investigators have carried out the researches focusing on the procedure of designing buckling restrained braces, quasi dynamic testing and the methods of the connection between the buckling restrained brace and main structure. But, these results can not reflect the effects of the structure with buckling restrained braces during earthquakes. Therefore, the shaking table testing should be done to examine the effects of new BRBs on the seismic responses of a structure. In this study, the reinforced buckling restrained braces were installed on a three-story scaled steel structure in Feng Chia University to perform a series of shaking table tests. The test results illustrate that the new unbond braces provide good protection for structures during earthquakes.

Abstract:
Since its first use in offshore project for drilling and production platform in 1984, more than two dozens of Tension Leg Platform (TLP) structures have been installed in oil and gas fields. The trend for using TLP structure in the exploration of deepwater oil fields has also gained momentum in recent years. The major driving force behind this is because the TLP structure has relatively smaller heave motion, thus it can be used for dry tree application in deepwater. Knee brace has found applications in the design of TLP structures. These vertically diagonal structure members are mainly used to support heavy vertical loads when the column spaces are large. The applications of knee braces have been used for two different stages: the integration stage and the in-place stage. For large topsides, the integration of the platform is usually performed in two or more separate lifting. The knee brace is used to temporarily support the pieces of the topsides before they are integrated together. For conventional type of TLP structures, the top tensioned vertical risers (TTRs) are placed in the middle of the platform to stay away from the mooring system and other subsea systems. The large column-to-column space and heavy TTR loads create some technical and economic challenges for the design of deck structures. To effectively take these vertical loads, knee brace is used to cut down the span of the deck supports. The challenge for this application is how to effectively share the vertical loads while at the same time not to induce much global dynamic action on the knee brace structure. This paper will review the application of knee braces in TLP projects, study the impact of the knee braces to the global action of the hull and topsides structures, and discuss the results of the analysis through a project example. The study will concentrate on the global load distribution through the knee braces, and the interaction between the knee braces and the hull structure under the global load action. Analysis results will be presented and the impact of the knee braces to the global structure will be discussed. These results will show that with proper configuration layout, the knee brace can be designed mainly to take the vertical static load, thus minimize the participation of the dynamic effect. The Author will also discuss the pros and cons of the knee brace structure in TLP application and some key issues which deserve attention during the application.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this research project is to study patients with elbow instability and design a brace that will help with the injury. The idea for this research project was presented by one of the research partners who has suffered from elbow instability for 10 years. Elbow instability is a rare condition that is mostly unspoken about. Many live with this condition without knowing it exists or simply ignoring it. But the effects of this injury are painful and permanent, making it harder to perform daily tasks using the arm. This research will provide data for a possible medical device to help reduce forces on the elbow joint and help reduce pain from elbow instability. To better analyze data for this injury, the elbow joint must be placed under a force test. Two participants volunteered to perform the test by lifting a series of weights. Data for the Electromyograms (EMG) was then collected using only the Trigno Wireless Biofeedback System, placed above the humerus near elbow joint where the injury is most common. Another aspect of this research was to better understand the popping of the elbow joint. A 3D model of the elbow joint was then printed and further analyzed. All gathered data and analytics are used to study how a medical brace could possibly help with patients’ elbow instability. The final goal for this research will be to design and create a brace that will alleviate pain caused by elbow instability in the patient. The brace will allow users to endure repeated popping of the elbow joint while muscles are contracted and relaxed.

Abstract:
During wartime, the numbers of amputees will likely increase adding to the need for progress in upper limb prosthetic design. Improvement of prostheses often requires knowledge of how the body adapts. Added weight and fatigue are complaints of upper limb prostheses users. Current improvements in the design of a transradial prosthesis include advanced technology in control systems and electronics that improve its functions. However, these improvements often require excess mass distally along the prosthesis. A transradial prosthesis without a dynamic wrist component may cause awkward compensatory motion in the shoulder and elbow. This work analyzes the ranges of joint movement of shoulder and elbow during two tasks: drinking from a cup and lifting a box. The main purpose of this study was to determine if simulating a basic transradial prosthesis by limiting motion of the forearm and wrist using a brace, would cause significant changes in the compensatory motion of the shoulder and elbow during the tasks. The second purpose of the study was to determine if the location of added mass of 96 g (mass of an electrical wrist rotator) would affect shoulder and elbow angles during these same tasks. A group of able-bodied participants were asked to complete the tasks during the following conditions: (1) no intervention (2) while wearing a brace that restricted forearm and wrist motion of their dominant arm (right) (3) wearing the same brace with a 96 g mass added near the elbow, (4) with the same brace and a 96 g mass added near the wrist. Subject movements were captured using a motion capture system and ranges of movement of shoulder and elbow, as well as degree of asymmetry (DoA) during the box lift were calculated for each subject. Three trials were collected for each test condition and were averaged as a representative for each subject. Statistical analysis of the results concluded that during drinking elbow flexion was significantly different in case 1 from the other 3 levels. Statistical analysis of lifting found significant differences in the dominant (right) shoulder and elbow flexion between all 4 levels, while their relative degree of symmetry was found to be statistically different between level 1 and 3–4. The study concludes that bracing limits forearm and wrist affects shoulder and elbow flexion and their relative DoA. The position of a 96g mass did not cause any statistical differences in the movements observed or in their DoA. Further testing will examine the transradial amputee population as well as the effects of position of added mass on joint torques during common tasks.

Abstract:
When humans hop or run on compliant surfaces they alter the stiffness of their legs so that the overall stiffness of the leg-surface system remains the same. Adding a spring in parallel to the ankle joint incites a similar neuromuscular response; humans decrease their biological ankle stiffness such that the overall ankle stiffness remains unchanged. These results suggest that an elastic exoskeleton could be effective at reducing the metabolic cost of locomotion. To further increase our understanding of human response we have developed an elastic knee brace that adds a stiff spring in parallel to the knee. It will be used as a test platform in ascertaining the neuromuscular effects of adding a parallel knee spring while hopping on one leg. This paper focuses primarily on the mechanical design and implementation of our elastic knee orthosis. Results of the forthcoming studies of human subjects wearing this knee orthosis will be presented in a separate article that will focus on the biomechanics and the neuromuscular adaptations of the human body. Prior research found that the neuromuscular response to hopping on compliant surfaces was the same when running on compliant surfaces. We expect that our results from hopping with springs in parallel with the knee will also be applicable to running. This elastic knee brace represents the first phase of an ongoing research project to develop a passive compliant lower-body exoskeleton to assist in human running. It is expected that this research will benefit healthy individuals as well as those with disabilities causing decreased muscle function.

Abstract:
Abstract The Chaboche model is a well-validated non-linear kinematic hardening material model. This material model, like many models, depends on a set of material constants that must be calibrated for it to match the experimental data. Due to the challenge of calibrating these constants, the Chaboche model is often disregarded. The challenge with calibrating the Chaboche constants is that the most reliable method for doing the calibration is a brute force approach, which tests thousands of combinations of constants. Different sampling techniques and optimization schemes can be used to select different combinations of these constants, but ultimately, they all rely on iteratively selecting values and running simulations for each selected set. In the experience of the authors, such brute force methods require roughly 2,500 combinations to be evaluated in order to have confidence that a reasonable solution is found. This process is not efficient. It is time-intensive and labor-intensive. It requires long simulation times, and it requires significant effort to develop the accompanying scripts and algorithms that are used to iterate through combinations of constants and to calculate agreement. A better, more automated method exists for calibrating the Chaboche material constants. In this paper, the authors describe a more efficient, automated method for calibrating Chaboche constants. The method is validated by using it to calibrate Chaboche constants for an IN792 single-crystal material and a CM247 directionally-solidified material. The calibration results using the automated approach were compared to calibration results obtained using a brute force approach. It was determined that the automated method achieves agreeable results that are equivalent to, or supersede, results obtained using the conventional brute force method. After validating the method for cases that only consider a single material orientation, the automated method was extended to multiple off-axis calibrations. The Chaboche model that is available in commercial software, such as ANSYS, will only accept a single set of Chaboche constants for a given temperature. There is no published method for calibrating Chaboche constants that considers multiple material orientations. Therefore, the approach outlined in this paper was extended to include multiple material orientations in a single calibration scheme. The authors concluded that the automated approach can be used to successfully, accurately, and efficiently calibrate multiple material directions. The approach is especially well-suited when off-axis calibration must be considered concomitantly with longitudinal calibration. Overall, the automated Chaboche calibration method yielded results that agreed well with experimental data. Thus, the method can be used with confidence to efficiently and accurately calibrate the Chaboche non-linear kinematic hardening material model.
