Abstract:
This work is composed of three phases : - an introduction about the author, leonardo bruni aretino (1370-1444); this humanist, born in arezzo, lived in florence during the first quattrocento. In order to thank him for being a good fellow, the city of toscany made him citizen and then chancellor of the republic, that is to say minister of foreign affairs. This introduction tried to characterize the place that this personnality occupied in the context of italian renaissance, in the tradition of the great florentine humanists as petrarch and salutati, and of a more ancient master, cicero ; he wasn't an innovator in philosophy, but, as actor engaged in politics, he used to be a fervent defender of civic humanism ; both latinist and hellenist, he brang an important contribution to the thought about philology and translation : lastly, his knowledge of ancient historians enabled him to renew this science at the beginning of the quattrocento. - a translation of leonardo bruni's latin and exemplary works : a praise oration of florence, the oratio de laudibus florentinae urbis, a dialogue composed in the ciceronian tradition, the dialogus ad petrum paulum histrum, two biographies, the cicero novus and the vita aristotelis, an educational treatise written for a woman, the de studiis et litteris liber, and a summary of the aristotle's nicomachean ethics, the isagogicon moralis disciplinae. - lastly, commentary notes which propose to link those texts of the first humanism to ancient literature and that one of his own time

Abstract:

Loose, Sarah Marianne. "Hero or Tyrant: Images of Julius Caesar in Selected Works from Vergil to Bruni." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2007. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1152.

Full text
Abstract:
Gaius Julius Caesar is not only the most well-known figure in Roman history, but he is also one of the most difficult to understand. Since his assassination, Caesar has played an important role in discussions of political power, imperial government, tyranny, and tyrannicide. While there have been literary treatments of Caesar from William Shakespeare to the present, little has been done to trace the image of Caesar through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. The present work attempts to fill that hole by examining portrayals of Caesar in medieval and early Renaissance texts. An examination of specific authors such as Geoffrey of Monmouth, John of Salisbury, Thomas Aquinas, Dante, Petrarch, Salutati, and Bruni, clearly demonstrates that Caesar was consistently portrayed as the first emperor and used to represent the Roman Empire. As the first emperor, representations of Caesar figured significantly in debates about the power of the Church and the Empire, the benefits and downfalls of imperial government, and tyrannicide. Authors were influenced in their portrayals of Caesar by the classical portrayals found in the works of Vergil, Lucan, and Suetonius. Each author's interpretation of Caesar was also impacted by the political and intellectual milieu in which he flourished. Analysis of Caesar's image over this time period serves not only as a part of Caesar historiography, but also provides insight into the ways that scholars write history to understand the world around them.

Villa, Michele. "Sintesi, caratterizzazione e reattività di cluster carbonilici di Pt contenenti fosfine." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2018. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/16108/.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstarct: Brazil is the world's largest exporter of soybeans. Pest insects can cause great damage to production, mainly lepidopteran defoliators. Until the 1970s their control was based on the application of chemical insecticides that caused environmental damage and selection of resistant populations. To mitigate this situation, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was implemented in Brazil, which prioritizes the use of selective insecticides, thus preserving the natural enemies. However in the last decades, the principles of IPM have been relegated by the producers, due to the increase of pests species, the difficulty in carrying out the samplings, use of transgenic varieties and, mainly due to lack of impartial assistance to the producer. Therefore, to better understand how the complex of lepidopteran pests and their parasitoids is currently composed, the present study aimed to assess their populations and to study the biology of a new species parasitizing eggs of Anticarsia gemmatalis . Thus, the study was divided in two chapters; in the first one surveys were carried out in two soybean areas in the Municipality of Lapa/PR, during the crop season of 2015/16. In one area, the practices recommended by IPM and planted with a conventional variety at the Agronomic Institute of Paraná were used. In the other area, the management of the producer was adopted using a transgenic variety, resistant to the herbicide glyphosate. The caterpillars were collected through the beat cloth method weekly between January and March 2016. The larval parasitoids were sampled from the caterpillars collected with the beat cloth method and manual collections. The egg parasitoids were collected from eggs laid by caged moths on plants kept in nylon cages. In field surveys the action level was not reached in both areas. In the conventional area the most abundant species was A. gemmatalis , which was controlled by natural enemies during the crop cycle. In the transgenic area, the Plusiinae complex predominated in all samplings, despite five applications of insecticides made in the area. Of the three different species of egg parasitoids found in the survey, Trichogramma bruni , is described for the first time in eggs of A. gemmatalis in Brazil. In the second chapter, from the individuals of T. bruni and T. pretiosum collected in the field, laboratory colonies were established and bioassays were carried out to compare the biology of the parasitoids in the eggs of the two main soybean pests, A. gemmatalis and Chrysodeixis includens . The following parameters were evaluated: number of parasitized eggs and of emerged adults, development time, number of parasitoids per egg, sex ratio, longevity and reproductive capacity. Trichogramma bruni was shown less effective to T. pretiosum for the parameters evaluated in the tested hosts. Both parasitizing species shown less preference to eggs of C. includens than those of A. gemmatalis . However, both species were able to parasitize these two key soybean pests. Key-words: Biological Control; Comparative biology; Egg parasitoids; Glycine max ; Integrated Pest Management.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the situation of the Latin language in the unique linguistic environment of early fifteenth century Florence. Florence, at this time, offers an interesting study because of the vernacular language's growing status in the wake of the literary success of vernacular authors Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio, and the humanist study of Greek language. Joshua Fishman's theories on threatened languages and Reversing Language Shift are used to examine Latin's position in this environment. Chapter I describes Fishman's theories and applies them to the special situation of Florence, giving a context for the following three chapters. Chapter II offers an original interpretation of Leonardo Bruni's Dialogus ad Petrum Histrum, emphasising the significance of the speaker, Coluccio Salutati, and his apparent message in favour of reviving spoken Latin. Chapter III describes a debate that began in 1435, after the papal Curia moved to Florence and Bruni was drawn into the discussions of the papal humanists. The debate examined whether the Ancient Romans actually spoke Latin in their daily lives, or whether Latin was primarily a written, literary language, and there was a separate, spoken language for domestic environments, as in Florence in the fifteenth century. A number of humanists commented in response to this question. I examine Flavio Biondo's treatise dedicated to Leonardo Bruni, Bruni's letter in response to Biondo, Poggio Bracciolini in the the Tertiae Convivialis Historiae Disceptatio, and finally, Leon Battista Alberti's comment in the preface to the third book of the Della Famiglia. In Chapter IV, Bruni's vernacular writing, the Vita di Dante,is used to establish Bruni's own attitude to language choice as flexible and dependant on the subject matter, genre and intended audience for the work.

Abstract:
Leonardo Bruni published one of his most widely copied translations, Xenophon's pro-monarchical Hiero, shortly before he penned his more famous original works, his Dialogues and Panegyric to the City of Florence. Scholars have traditionally focused on the political ideas present in these original treatises; yet, despite the centrality of political ideas to the Hiero, its temporal proximity to these works, and its enormous popularity (the work exists in 200 fifteenth-century manuscripts), scholars have neglected to offer a full assessment of Bruni's translation in the context of these works. Bruni's translation of Xenophon's Hiero fit into a debate in early fifteenth-century Florence about Julius Caesar and the Florentine poet Dante. The two major thinkers in the debate, Bruni and Coluccio Salutati, agreed that a distinction had to be made between kings and tyrants based on legal claim and quality of rule. The Hiero reinforced this assumption. The two men disagreed, however, about which category applied to Julius Caesar and what this meant for the reputation of Dante.

Abstract:
This thesis studies one of the most important personalities from the Castilian Crown, Alfonso de Palencia (1423-1492), chronicle of the Catholic Kings, and his translation of Plutarch’s Parallel Lives. The main purpose has been to connect straightaway Palencia’s deep interest in this Greek biographer with that one of the Italian Humanists and his scholar training in Florence and Rome. In fact, to complete his ambitious project, Palencia took as his main working text the Latin versions collected by Giovannantonio Campano and printed in Rome in 1470, with the title of Parallelae, sive Vitae illustrium virorum; More specifically, Palencia used the third edition of this corpus (Venice, Nicholas Jenson, 1478), with which I have shown the paratextual analogies and divergences among original and translation. The present work analyzes the translation methodology which Palencia and other Spanish authors from the XV century used to carry out their versions, proving how medieval methods of translation are different from those used by the Italian translators (mostly by Leonardo Bruni) and how the new translating practice spread to other European countries, such as the Iberian Peninsula. Thus, the creation of a glossary has been very helpful in order to objectify all data, such as the use of lexical paraphrases, binomials, Latinisms, patrimonial words, etc. For the first time, I have deepened in the reception of Palencia’s translation of Plutarch’s Lives in the Iberian Peninsula. One first census in Inventories and Libraries has shed light on a conspicuous number of exiting copies in the Castilian nobles’ libraries; nevertheless, several volumes glossed by readers from the early XVI century proof an active reading of the translation. The main part of this thesis is the bilingual critical edition of a selection of texts, originally written in Latin by Italian humanists, included in the Plutarch’s Latin edition, and translated by Alfonso de Palencia, namely, the Vita Aristotelis by Leonardo Bruni, Vita Platonis by Guarino Veronese, Vita Caroli Magni and Vitae Hannibalis et Scipionis by Donato Acciaiuoli.

Abstract:
Two types of adipose tissue are present in mammals, white and brown adipose tissue. White adipose tissue (WAT) is specialized in storage and release of lipids, and brown adipose tissue (BAT) is specialized in energy dissipation as heat through the mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1).In humans,thermogenically-competent brown adipose tissue is negatively associated with body mass index and diabetes. BAT is composed of two distinct types of thermogenic cells, classical brown adipocytes located in specific depots and brite adipocytes (brown-in white). In mice, these cells appear in WAT upon cold exposure and are protective against obesity-induced insulin resistance. Therefore, fighting obesity through "browning" of white adipose tissue emerges as a promising strategy. However, the ability of human white adipocytes to acquire a brown/brite phenotype is not yet understood. Here, we aimed at identifying the molecular and metabolic changes associated with the white-to-brown conversion of human mesenchymal adipose-derived stem (hMADS) cells following treatment by agonists of the nuclear receptor PPARgamma or PPARalpha. First, we demonstrated in vitro that PPARgamma or PPARalpha agonists similarly induce white-to-brown conversion of hMADS cells into brite adipocytes that possess high mitochondrial content and express UCP1. Second, we showed that browning is associated with profound metabolic changes. The lipolytic machinery and fatty acid re-esterification was stimulated by the two treatments, resulting in a futile cycle. These adaptations combined with an increase of fatty acid betaoxidation provide substrates to sustain the high level of mitochondrial thermogenesis. In contrast, glucose uptake and oxidation are decreased through inactivation of the pyruvate dehydrogenase by PDK4. Consequently, glucose-carbons are redirected towards glyceroneogenesis to provide the glycerol-3-phosphate backbone necessary for triglyceride esterification. Thus, brite adipocyte metabolism is modified to promote fatty acid utilization as the main energy source. In order to confirm the involvement of PPARalpha in inducing browning in vivo, we treated mice with inactivation of the PPARalpha gene with a beta3-adrenergic agonist. In subcutaneous WAT, expression of BAT- and brite-specific markers was lower in PPARalpha knock out than in wild type mice, confirming that PPARa is required for WAT browning. Altogether, this study shows that PPARgamma and PPARalpha activation in human white adipocytes promotes browning associated with an increase in fatty acid utilization without enhancement of glucose metabolism. These metabolic changes favor intra-adipose fatty acid utilization and thus could diminish plasma fatty flux for ectopic storage into insulin-sensitive tissues

Abstract:
In the Cap Bon peninsula, located in the north-eastern Tunisia, the forestation of the Menzel Belgacem's dunes constitutes one of the first attempt of forest creating during the French protectorate. From 1930, sands have been gradually stabilized and today the new forest came over the sand deposits. The Dar Chichou's forest, more than 6000 adjoining hectares, represents an striking example of Mediterranean dunal forest. Before all this study seek to draw up the balance sheet of the interventions conducted by the forest services from the beginning of the 20th century. The approach is based on the use of remote sensing data, compared with field information, for the build-up of a landscape units map. The Northern area of the Cap Bon, where the stamp of the coast is omnipresent, is characterized by a fast evolution of the natural habitat and by heavy landscapes changes. Many projects are planned and the society expectations are becoming insistent and often contradictory. Thus our thesis aim to analyse the changes assigned to the landscapes features. The comparison of georeferenced and multidate data allows to follow up the evolution of the rural landscape in the northern Cap Bon from 1900. It shows a sensitive change of the landscapes which illustrate itself by the progressive forestation of the large dunal sling of Dar Chichou. We endeavour to demonstrate the interest of such a methodology in reaching recommendation of new terms management able to fit the various functions of the forest habitat

Abstract:
2012/2013

In my essay I am looking at the common heritage of written signs and images through my own experience of attention deficiency and mental illness. Through this lens of experience in which words and images are vividly transformed and merged, I am reflecting on language and art and their overlapping. Throughout the text I reference early written entirely pictorial languages, the painterly terms of thought disorders, as well as how the images that gave name to the characters in the phonetic alphabet is still lurking in the very letters themselves. I also exemplify how attention deficiency can evoke new image/text hybrids in a chapter I call ADHD poetry. In my own artistic practice I am drawn towards a melting point of language, written sign, image, high and low, illusion-representation-materiality, intellect and intuition. The surface as a physical object and idea – that there is a two-dimensional space where we project fantasies and fiction. Through prose, play, rhythm, rant, word salad, crumble of meaning etc. sandwiched, I am observing the swelling of words.

Abstract:
Botryococcus braunii is a potential source of renewable energy due to high lipid yield and the ability of hydrocarbon excretion B. braunii 807/2 was successfully grown in outdoor paddle wheel driven raceway ponds for over 5 months. The growth of this alga in tubular photobioreactor (Biocoil) was also successful for up to a month, but was inhibited by high cell sticking to the coils. There was no significant difference in growth rate and biomass productivity between these two systems. The lipid productivity B. braunii culture in the open pond was 0.008 ± 0.004 g.L-1.day-1 at a specific growth rate of 0.06 ± 0.03 day-1, and the indoor culture was 0.04 g.L-1 .day-1 at growth rate of 0.04 ± 0.03 day-1. B. braunii was found to have highest photosynthesis under 30℃ at 100 μmol photons.m-2.s-1. Lower temperature (10℃) reduced photosynthesis by 58% at 6 mg.L-1 O2 and 84% at 2 mg.L-1 O2. B. braunii was light saturated at 100 μmol photons.m-2.s-1, and no significant photoinhibition was observed even under 1900 μmol photons.m-2.s-1. Photosynthesis was inhibited by 40 to 80% when O2 was increased from 2 mg.L-1 to 6 mg.L-1. Interestingly increasing oxygen concentrations decreased the dark respiration rate. Increasing temperature by 5℃ in open ponds increases lipid productivity, but had no effect on biomass productivity and growth rate. However, lowering pond depth by 5 cm (in winter) had no effect on growth and biomass/lipid yield. It was also found that aerating the pond reduces the O2 concentration and this can be potentially useful for reducing photoinhibition.

Abstract:
Since its independence in 1984, politicians and nationalists in Brunei Darussalam have appealed to traditions in their efforts to create a national identity based on Brunei Darussalam’s national philosophy, `Malay Islamic Monarchy’. Weaving is one of the traditions related to Brunei traditional culture, thus traditional textile is used to construct national identity. This study focuses on the role played by powerful institutions in the creation of new tradition in order to foster national awareness in the `new state’ of Brunei Darussalam and I examine how traditional textiles are incorporated into the project of nation building. In Bruneian society, traditional woven cloths have multiple roles whose meanings vary according to the situation in which the traditional cloth is utilized. This research explores the significance of traditional textiles in Brunei Darussalam, focusing on the consumption of locally woven textiles in its traditions and the relationships to the expression and construction of identity. Since Islam came to Brunei Darussalam, it has become one of the predominant markers of identity of the Malays. This study analyse the influence of Islam in the production and consumption of traditional textile in Brunei Darussalam. The continuity of the production and consumption of traditional woven textile in Brunei Darussalam is very much dependent on its significant in the traditions of Brunei society as a whole. In order to prove this, this study focuses its investigation upon the production and uses of traditional textiles in the social customs of Malay society in Brunei Darussalam. Traditional woven textiles are employed to construct social identity in the reproduction of distinction. Traditional textiles are also offered to signify privilege and power. I examine how traditional textile is being used to distinguish social status and political prominence, denote offices, and display wealth and prestige.

Abstract:
The river Bivaröd is one of the river Helgeån tributaries which has the highest and the fastest increase in water colour. The reason behind this increase is unclear but several factors have been suggested to affect this pattern. In this work, I studied the role of land use, iron and precipitation for water colour increase in river Bivaröd for the period 1976 -2011. Data from a field study along with data from SRK for river Helgeån were used for the analyses. The results showed that both water colour and iron concentration increase and that there is a strong correlation between these two variables. Land use and especially intensive forestry and short distances of the water flow are suggested as possible factors that may affect the water colour. Approximately 68 % of the river Bivarödån basin is covered by forest. Forests are a major source of humic matter production that gives the water its brown colour. The increase in iron concentration may be alarming considering that river Bivarödån has low alkalinity. Iron in conjunction with low alkalinity may affect the water ecosystem negatively. The climate seems to play an important role in the dynamics of humic substances in river Bivaröd. Water colour was significantly lower in January than in July. Ground frost which forms in January because of the low temperatures  is suggested as a major reason why humic substances leaching is inhibited at this time of year. Extended periods without frost in the ground because of warmer climate can contribute to watercolor increase.

Giannerini, Davide. "La disuguaglianza di Brunn-Minkowski." Bachelor's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2021. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/23711/.

Full text
Abstract:

This work is mainly aimed to investigate the associations of non-human and human in the composition of the collective philosophical bias contained in latourianas works: Type of Policy: How do science in democracy and Pandora's Hope: Essays on the reality of studies scientific. Having two specific objectives: to discuss the influence of political ecology Latourian the progressive composition of the team and investigate the contributions of relativistic empiricism, in order to have the understanding of scientific practices nowadays. We realize that Bruno Latour has built a relativist empiricism that, in general, rejects the separation between the ontological entities Nature and Culture as well as the separation between subject and object. All efforts are concentrated into question the idea of having a rigid separation between nature and society. The Latourian proposal, contained in amoderno agreement seeks to establish the exercise of the full dialogue between things and the other actors; and thereby defines the anthropocentric power in scientific practices, that democracy requires the political participation of all surfactants, since the proposals articulated in the collective are not derived solely from the logocentrism; but are engendered by / in the plots woven by humans and nonhumans. We realized that the iconoclastic gesture of modern, with which separated the collective in two dimensions: nature on one side and society on the other, was inefficient, why this split happened not because of the proliferation of hybrids on the way these dimensions, the mediation work. We can see that things are not silent, neither are subordinated to the logocentric authoritarianism of humans, even though their voices seem inaudible, things speak, weave well articulated propositions in parliament of things, as a way of composing the common world.

Abstract:
The dissertation investigates the infinite, as conceived by Giordano Bruno. The infinite was object of studies in the Classical Antiquity, so much on the part of the atomism as of the aristotelianism. However, Giordano Bruno went the first philosopher to defend the your existence in act, in the sensitive and supersensitive dimensions, for beyond of the space and of the time, both in the cosmological as in the anthropological range, in confrontation with aristotelian thought, which only admitted the infinite in potency. The hypothesis that guides the research is that the nolan doctrine of the infinite remains valid, since it rids the universe of chains of finitists dogmas, spiritualists and materialists, paving the way for the advancement of ethics, aesthetics, epistemology and other areas of knowledge, with invaluable impact on individual and social life of men.

Mohammad, Harunthmarin Nur Qistin. "Culture, Tradition and the Series of Bruneian Folklore." Thesis, Griffith University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365267.

Abstract:
This project is the first scholarly study on The Series of Bruneian Folklore and its significance as a legacy for the culture of Brunei. It is also the first English translation of selected tales in the Series. The broad trajectory of this thesis examines the survival of Brunei’s powerful oral narrative heritage which existed for 500 years as a vital part of traditional Bruneian society, and which still survives in the form of published children’s literature. Amidst modern culture, however, it is considered an outdated object of the past; this explains its deteriorating presence as a formative cultural force in the Brunei of today. This dissertation transforms this perception of the Series and recognizes it as the embodiment of an important cultural and historical heritage. The main theoretical foundation is Homi Bhabha’s, The Location of Culture (1994) and the main literary framework is the Gothic mode: together they both serve as an overarching framework for analysis in each chapter. International literary perspectives are employed to achieve a cross-cultural examination of the Series, addressing this published expression of Brunei’s complex narrative heritage within the context of recent literary discourse. As a product of hybrid cultural influences and historical practices, published in a contemporary time frame, the Series has been approached with reference to Western literary concepts and modes of critique, including Postcolonialism, Feminism and the Gothic, addressing its importance as the reflection of a unique narrative heritage.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study offers a view of the stylistic patterns defined by the analysis of the contrapuntal processes used in the third movement of Sonata I, Fuga e Toccata, and the final movement of Duas peças sérias [Two serious pieces], from the piano works of Bruno Kiefer. The fugue, one of the most well established linear techniques of musical writing, reflects the stylistic transformations in Western music. Considering the diversity of aesthetic possibilities in twentieth-century music, it is appropriate to investigate how Kiefer dealt with such a technique, preserving an innovating style in a consistent manner, which has always been attributed to his music. This study was guided by Twentieth Century Fugue – A Handbook (1962), by William Graves, Jr.. After the analysis of the recurrent patterns found in the fugues by Kiefer, a verification of how these patterns relate to traditional parameters of fugal writing was undertaken.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to provide teachers with a practical means to obtain timely indications of their students reactions to individual activities. Teachers could then modify their presentations of activities cognisant of those students perceptions. The study set out to establish a suitable instrument, and then to evaluate its use by classroom teachers.Five experienced science and mathematics teachers identified five characteristics of interest when considering students perceptions of classroom activities: Understand Content, Communication, Relevancy, Work Output, and Enjoyment. A fifteen-item instrument based upon these characteristics was developed for this study. The viability of the survey for use by busy classroom teachers was increased by the short and succinct format, as well as the provision of a computer graphing template to process and display responses. The combination of the survey and computer template is called the Students' Perceptions of an Activity Instrument and Display (SPAID).Teachers appreciated the provision of a structure to assist their reviewing the use of activities, and the rapidity with which the information was available. Students' responses provided timely support for teachers' decisions to engage classes in the activities and increased teachers' confidence in the worth of the activities. Alterations to activities were small in scale and idiosyncratic to the student cohorts. Teachers' use of the SPAID package was also noted to enhance cooperation with colleagues within the government secondary schools of Brunei Darussalam.

Razak, Abdul. "Brunei Bay northwest Borneo : depositional system." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2001. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=206630.

Full text
Abstract:
Brunei Bay in Northwest Borneo is a semi circular marine embayment formed during the last marine transgression. It represent a complex tropical depositional system in a micro-mesotidal setting in which the following elements can be recognised - an elongate bird's foot delta with abandoned lobes, drowned river valleys, cuspate delta and classic tidal estuary - all within 50 krn of each other. Understanding the control on the morphology of the sand bodies produced within the overall depositional system is of great importance because it is believed that many of the subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs in Northwest Borneo were deposited in a depositional setting similar to that of modern-day Brunei Bay. This study therefore has major implications for defining the architecture and connectivity of subsurface reservoirs. A detailed bathymetry survey of western Brunei Bay has been undertaken which acted as guide for subsequent hydrodynamic measurements and coring programme. The results of this study indicate that the localised depositional setting plays a key role in understanding sandbody geometry because the orientation of sandbodies and facies distribution varies considerably. Tidal processes playa significant role in shaping the sediment distribution and facies characteristic of the area although locally wave processes can play a significant role. Tidal sandbodies parallel to the direction of drowned rivers, form a large arcuate-shaped complex less constrained by the structural trend. This study suggests that within Brunei Bay, morphology and tidal range is not a good indicator of the dominant process. Mud, exceptionally rich in plant debris derived from the mangrove swamps, accumulates in low energy environments peripheral to the distributary channel, reinterpretation of many coal horizons in the Miocene of the region which have largely been ascribed to a raised setting. This study indicates that the present day Brunei Bay is an excellent analog for the tidally influenced succession of Northwest Borneo. Conversely, it also indicates that the Baram Delta located approximately 100 krn west of Brunei Bay is not a suitable analog for the interpreted wave influenced Miocene succession of Northwest Borneo.

Lécu, Régis. "L'idée de perfection chez Giordano Bruno." Paris 4, 2001. http://www.theses.fr/2000PA040070.

Full text
Abstract:
The idea of perfection gives a guiding thread to Bruno's works. Bruno's metaphysics conceives this idea to answer the essential motion of mind which is never satisfied with any finite object. .

Viennese-born bruno bettelheim, a jew, emigrates to the united states after having spent some time in nazi concentration camps, and settles as a psychoanalyst. On the clinical level, he is extremely influenced by his experience as a prisoner in dachau and buchenwald. In the american environment, he will make use of the various american interpretations of freud's theories ; he will, therefore, criticize psychoanalysis, which he will see as an insufficient theory to be developed and completed. In the end of his life, however, he will "come back" to freud. He was well-known for his remarkable empathy and the precision of his diagnoses, but he remained an empirical practitioner of psychoanalysis, theory being his weak point
