Abstract:
Abstract Tacitus is an unlikely source for our study of Brutus, Cassius, and Cato, as they stand outside the chronological framework of Tacitus’ writings; nonetheless, they do appear a number of times throughout his works, and Tacitus portrays them with nuance and significance. As Brutus, Cassius, and Cato are rarely the precise focus for Tacitus, they are often referred to obliquely or in dialogue or speeches typically regarding treason and liberty. This paper will explore Tacitus’ depiction of Brutus, Cassius, and Cato in his major and minor works, including the oblique references to Cato, Brutus as an orator and writer, Brutus and Cassius as commanders in civil war, and lastly their memory as it pertains to liberty and treason. Tacitus’ contribution to our understanding of Brutus, Cassius, and Cato comes from both his own use of them as markers of political memory and liberty and his examination of how others used Brutus, Cassius, and Cato to make arguments for political liberty or for the basis of accusations of treason.

Abstract:
In Julius Caesar Shakespeare reproduces one of the pivotal moments in European history. Brutus and Mark Antony, through the medium of their forum speeches, compete for the support of the people of Rome. In the play, as in history, Mark Antony wins this contest of language. Critics are generally agreed that Antony has the better speech, but also that Brutus’ speech is still exceptionally good. Traditionally the question of how Antony’s speech is superior is argued by examining differences between the two speeches, however, this approach has not resulted in any critical consensus. This paper takes the opening lines of the speeches as the only point of direct convergence between the content and the rhetorical forms used by Brutus and Antony and argues that Brutus’ opening tricolon is structurally inferior to Marc Antony’s. Analysis of the following rhetorical schemes in Brutus’ speech reveals further structural weaknesses. Shakespeare gives Brutus a speech rich in perceptually salient rhetorical schemes but introduces small, less salient, structural weaknesses into those schemes. The tightly structured linguistic patterns which make up the majority of Brutus’ speech give an impression of great rhetorical skill. This skilful impression obscures the minor faults or weaknesses that quietly and subtly reduce the overall power of the speech. By identifying the weaknesses in Brutus’ forms we add an extra element to the discussion of these speeches and at the same time display how subtly and effectively Shakespeare uses rhetorical forms to control audience response and appreciation.

Abstract:
Abstract Jules Bledsoe, one of the great African American singers, composers, actors, and activists in twentieth-century US culture, is often missing from historical reports of his time. Yet he originated the role of Joe in Show Boat, performed in the first European tour of the operatic version of The Emperor Jones, and composed and arranged important operas, spirituals, and an “Ode to America,” dedicated to President Roosevelt. In spite of these accomplishments, Jules Bledsoe has not been given the attention he deserves as an artist of talent, determination, and indomitable spirit. This article seeks to write Bledsoe back into the historical record more broadly and into O'Neill studies in particular. In so doing, I show that the role of Brutus Jones haunted Bledsoe throughout his career, from his rise to stardom abroad as an opera singer to his untimely death at the age of forty-three. In excavating the Emperor's remains, it becomes clear that Bledsoe was a key figure in the rise of modern American theater, opera, and in the struggle for racial equality.

Abstract:
The paper builds upon familiar arguments against identifying the proposition that Brutus stabbed Caesar with a given sequence containing Brutus, Caesar, and the stabs relation. It identifies a further problem, one that affects not only traditional Russellian accounts of propositions, but also the recent act-theoretic approach championed by Scott Soames and Peter Hanks. The problem is that there is no clear content to the idea that the pair < Brutus, Caesar> instantiates the stabs relation. It is argued that this further problem presents a decisive objection to the act-theoretic approach to propositions.

Abstract:
According to Plutarch, the daimon which appears to Dion and announces to him his imminent death looks as a Tragic Erinys (Dion 55.2). Plutarch says also that a vision which identifies itself as “your evil daimon” appears to Brutus, just before the battle of Philippi, to announce to him his death (Brutus 36.7). We find this last motive also in Caesar. This paper focuses on the similarities between these episodes which announce the death to Dion and Brutus in a similar way, establishing intertextual links between these Lives. Secondly, I’ll pay attention to the relationship between these texts and the tragedy.

Abstract:
This dissertation is divided into two parts: the first one is a study about the Brutus, a dialogue by Marcus Tullius Cicero; the second one presents its complete translation into Portuguese. The Brutus shows features of philosophic dialogue, of historical narrative and of laudatio funebris, and can be summarized as a history of Roman oratory. In chronological order, Cicero mentions and assesses the oratorical qualities of Roman orators and magistrates, while at the same time dealing with Romes political history, with the development of Latin literature and with oratorical doctrine. The Brutus is a dialogue (sermo) between Brutus, Atticus and Cicero. This study discusses its features as a dialogue, laudatio funebris, memoria and history of Roman oratory.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The main aim of my dissertation is to re-evaluate the poetry of the South African writer Dennis Brutus (1924-2009). Even though he produced a substantial number of poems over more than half a century, his work continues to receive limited attention in South African literary criticism. One of the main reasons is the perception that he was primarily a political activist who wrote poetry with the purpose of advancing his political objectives. However, even though he wrote extensively on political issues, his themes include a wide range of subjects. In addition, he paid close attention to the craft of poetry. Due to the tendency to foreground the political content of his writing, the complexity and diversity in the language and style of his poetry are seldom examined. Refocusing attention on the aesthetic features of his work is a key aspect of my dissertation. I also contend that, despite the political content of much of his poetry, Brutus remains, first and foremost, a writer of lyric poetry. What makes his writing different from the conventional lyric, though, is his quest to find ways of using a very personal mode of poetic expression to make statements on public matters. How he pursues this objective is a major focus of my dissertation. I examine various literary influences on his writing as well. Brutus initially drew extensively on the traditional English literary canon he was taught at school and at university. Later, in order to communicate more directly and accessibly, he drew on traditional Chinese poetry. For the same reason, he subsequently wrote some poems with the specific objective of public performance. My re-evaluation of Brutus’ poetry is primarily based on a contextual reading of his work. Such an approach is based on the notion that the context within which a writer lives and writes is vital in order to gain a more informed understanding of his or her writing. In addition, my dissertation draws on Homi K. Bhabha’s elaboration of Freud’s notion of the “unheimlich” (“unhomely”) to examine Brutus’ life and poetry. Bhabha pays particular attention to the sense of estrangement which is embedded in Freud’s theory. His elaboration provides an important conceptual tool with which to analyse Brutus’ writing, and makes it possible to identify links among his various poetic personae and to identify common features in the themes of his poetry. I argue that Brutus’ unhomelineness lies at the centre of his poetic personae – the troubadour, the exile and the cosmopolitan – and of most of the themes of his poetry. Another important focus of my dissertation is how Brutus responds to this state of unhomeliness. The central aspect of my argument is that he redefines his sense of self during different periods of his life: he evolves from initially being a patriot in South Africa into a rooted cosmopolitan in exile; he then, finally, becomes a rootless cosmopolitan. I explore the reasons behind this evolution, and contend that these shifts were essentially attempts to regain agency over his life.

Abstract: The work Brutus, by Marcus Tullius Cicero, builds a reflection upon the history of eloquence and an evaluation about the greatest names of Rhetoric, since its emergence within the ancient Greek culture until its Roman contributions, whose most glorious representative is Tully himself. At the end of the Republic, under Caesarian tyranny, the Arpinate displays his pantheon of speakers, associated with a set of precepts about the Latin language and culture. The present study advocates that the Ciceronian perceptive is related to De analogia, a work by Julius Caesar (and dedicated to Cicero, as a reaction to his influential De oratore). This dissertation aims at investigating how Cicero formulates his conceptions about Latin in a way incompatible with Caesar¿s convictions. The discussion about Latinitas is seen as an opportunity, in Brutus, for Cicero to articulate his own ethos as a character, as well as Caesar¿s (also included in the dialogue). Latin is a battlefield tinted with political hues: The Roman orator conceives Latinitas as a matter of basic education and a habit reached through practice with worthy families. Julius Caesar, on the other hand, aims to democratize Latinity. Hence, the general¿s standpoint, favoring a restricted understanding of oratory, is governed by ratio ¿ in other words, by a rational method. Latinitas is connected to the idea of a properly Roman identity; the adequate speech is understood differently according to those different perspectives. The Brutus begins with the death of Hortesius, but the obliteration of public forensic debate (enforced by Caesar) represents, for Cicero, the death of Republic. Therefore, the text composes a reflection on death ¿ not merely the death of a speaker, but also the death of a number of principles cherished by the Arpinate in a Rome which had been recently brought under control by means of censorship

Abstract:
The Roman tragedies of XVIIIth and XIXth centuries have only one poor place in the literary studies. The exceptional longevity of the genre, which, since the XVIIth century, combines a fixed form on subjects which draw their inspiration from the same pages of history, seems to give an impression of monotony and wear, to which one conclude too quickly. One must not forget that these tragedies are in the middle of an intense theatrical life, which reflects philosophical and political questions. Closely related to the policy, the tragic theatre becomes a place of debate, then of propaganda, an instrument to celebrate the government or a means of disputation. Receiving various influences, the roman tragedies leave progressively the universe of convention to which modern criticism restricts them, to become more natural : thanks to the actors and dramatists who transformed codes, Rome is really alive on the tragic scene, testifying to the multiple nuances of a genre which hesitated a long time between classicism and romanticism

Abstract:
Hurricane Lili permitted an assessment of the global performance of several deepwater structures under a major environmental event. The US Minerals Management Service (MMS) commissioned American Global Maritime Inc. (AGMI) to collect and assess information on the performance of the deepwater production facilities that were impacted by Lili. The Shell Brutus Tension Leg Platform (TLP) provided comprehensive measurements of winds, motions and tendon tensions during Lili. The tendon tension data recorded was analyzed in both the time and frequency domain and tendon tension statistics were comparable to the relevant design values. Other relevant comparisons included natural period and damping estimates. Overall the design ‘recipe’ adopted for Brutus was sufficient to prevent exceedance of design capacities and damage to the hull structure and tendons during Hurricane Lili. The lessons learned from the analyses and recommendations for further work are also summarized in this paper.

Coavas-Blanquicet, Sami Gabriel, Celene Margarita Romero Haddad, and Guillermo David Ruíz Padilla. El producto interno bruto (PIB). Ediciones Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, November 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.16925/gcnc.76.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Melo-Velandia, Luis Fernando, Hernán Rincón-Castro, and Jorge Hernán Toro-Córdoba.

Full text
Abstract:

Ortega, Julio, and Roberto Ramos.

Full text
Abstract:

Institute of Development Studies, December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2020.006.

Full text
Abstract:
