Full textTurning points involves shifts between different occupations and areas of education and labor. The individual processes turning points using various routines. The purpose of this study is to examine six women's stories of turning points and routines in their careers. Six semi structured interviews were conducted. A hermeneutic approach has been used in processing and analyzing the stories. The results show that the six women have experienced several turning points in their career and that they have used several different routines to deal with these turning points. Most turning points have been difficult to classify as self-initiated or forced, as well as difficult to distinguish from routines and previous turning points. One conclusion is that career can be described as a lifelong process of turning points and routines.

Full textSyftet med examensarbetet var att undersöka hur påtvingade brytpunkter, i detta fall nedläggning av en arbetsplats, upplevdes och vilka möjligheter individerna såg inför sina fortsatta karriärval. Den metod som användes var av kvalitativ art med ostrukturerade intervjufrågor riktat till sex respondenter som befann sig i samma situation. Resultatet visade att trots att de flesta respondenter kände chock och ilska när beskedet kom, så upplevde de ett år senare situationen som mer hanterbar och hade börjat strukturera i både tankar och handling vilka alternativ man såg som möjliga och åtkomliga. De slutsatser vi drog var att individens egen motivation har spelat stor roll och beslut som tagits har utgått ifrån den kontext man befunnit sig i. Flera var aktiva i sitt sökande efter nya möjligheter till sysselsättning och kunde med lite distans se denna oförutsedda händelse som ett tillfälle i livet att utifrån ett intresse finna en ny karriär.
The purpose with the degree project was to investigate how forced turning points, in this case company closure, were experienced and what opportunities individuals could see concerning their continuous career choices. Method used was of qualitative kind with unstructured interview questions aimed to six respondents´ being in the same situation. Despite most of respondents´ feelings of chock and anger when information was recieved, the result proved one year later they experienced the situation as manageable and had started to structure in both thoughts and actions different possibilities and reachable alternatives. Conclusions made were in fact that the individual’s own motivation had made a big difference and decisions made were taken considering the context of their lives. Most of the respondents were active in seeking after new possibilities to occupation and were able to with some perspective see this unforeseen turning point as an opportunity in life to find a new career based on their interest.

Full textThis study will aim to explore the major important factors that influenced six elite athletes in their new career choices after retirement. The method used was predominantly qualitative, with hermeneutics and narratives added in order to encapsulate the respondents own descriptions of point break. The result shows that the experience of retirement differs between those whom retired wilfully, and those who were forced to; because of injury or lack of motivation. The process to choose a new career was described by all respondents as difficult. However, they all felt motivated in their new choices, and were, ultimately, satisfied. The respondents made a practical rational choice based on earlier experiences of the particular line of work, values and emotional content. The post-retirement careers of elite athletes is a field relatively unexplored within vocational guidance counselling, which makes this study interesting for further development of this field.

Full textThe study aims to investigate the reasons underlying women's career changes through academic studies. We try to give a new perspective on women’s career choice processes in social science research. Both a quantitative and a qualitative method were used in order to answer our research questions. The two methods complement and reinforce each other while providing a more nuanced picture of the problem area. The quantitative method consisting of a questionnaire addressed a number of selected female students at StockholmUniversity. The qualitative study is based on interviews with six respondents selected from the survey. Processing and analysis are based on the results from the survey and the individual interviews with the support of appropriate career choice methods and theories. The results show that the causes of women's career changes are the turning points of either a volunteer or forced character. Women's action horizon, the turnings points and routines are influenced by their habitus, previous experiences and were they are in life. Our conclusion is that women's educational and career choices primarily are an interest and a career strategy as well an effort to increase the quality of life.

Full textMånga människor drabbas av sjukdom. En del blir friska medan andra aldrig återhämtar sig. Hos dessa patienter försämras tillståndet successivt och slutligen kommer sjukdomen till en brytpunkt (turning point) där det längre inte är motiverat att fortsätta med den kurativa behandlingen. När den kurativa behandlingen avbryts, syftar de fortsatta omvårdnadsåtgärderna till att patienten upplever välmående i livets slutskede.
Syftet med denna litteraturstudie var att undersöka vilka faktorer som påverkar identifikation av brytpunkten hos svårt sjuka patienter, samt på vilket sätt omvårdnadsåtgärderna ändras efter denna identifikation. En kvalitativ innehållsanalys på aktuella vetenskapliga studier har genomförts. Datamaterialet består av nio vetenskapliga artiklar.
Resultatet har ordnats under två teman: Faktorer som påverkar identifikation av brytpunkten och omvårdnadsåtgärder efter identifikation av brytpunkten. Om patienten slutar svara på behandlingen och om dennes tillstånd ständigt försämras, påverkar detta den fortsatta kurativa behandlingen. Patientens egen önskan, är en annan påverkande faktor. Resultatet visar att när den kurativa behandlingen avslutas får patienterna ofta psykiska problem såsom ångest och oro. Omvårdnadsåtgärderna syftar till att lindra dessa samt att trösta och smärtlinda patienten. Denna studie kan öka sjuksköterskans kunskap om vilka omvårdnadsåtgärder hon kan bistå patienterna med i livets slutskede när det längre inte är motiverat med kurativ behandling.

Full textIntroduction: Patients with a life-threatening illness are admitted to the ICU with hope of recovery. ICU patients receive advanced life-saving treatment in a high technological environment. About 10% of ICU patients die regardless of the invasive and sometimes painful treatment received. Health care professionals have however gained insight that the life-saving treatment patients receive can sometimes be futile. This has even lead to an increase of ending curative treatment in ICU patients hence starting end-of-life care. This means that the ICU nurses often experience giving end-of-life care to ICU patients in their profession. Aim: The aim was to study ICU nurses’ experiences of withholding or withdrawing curative treatment and the transition to end-of-life care. Method: A qualitative method with a descriptive design was used to conduct the study. Data were collected using semi-structured, open interviews, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis of data resulted in a theme: an intention to alleviate the patient’s and relatives’ suffering, and four categories: ICU nurses’ experiences of caring for the dying ICU patient, ICU nurses’ experiences of being involved in the decision-making process, ICU nurses’ experiences of involving the relatives in the decision-making process, and ICU nurses’ feelings of frustration over the decision-making process. Conclusion: The ICU nurses did not experience emotional distress due to providing end-of-life care to ICU patients. However, the process of transition from curative treatment to end-of-life care was frustrating for ICU nurses. Communication, both within the health-care team and between the ICU nurses and the relatives, was a key factor during the entire decision-making process.

Full textBackground: The palliative care in Sweden is meant to include a good clinical care and be conducted equally throughout the country. During the transition to late palliative phase, when life supporting treatment no longer is meaningful, the physician is meant to have a dialogue about this with the patient. The care after this breakpoint conversation is then focused on alleviating suffering and promoting as good quality of life that is possible. Data from the Swedish register for palliative care (Palliativa registret) shows that approximately 50 % of patients have had av documented breakpoint conversation. Aim: The aim of our study was to describe nurses experience of patient care at the end of life on a surgical ward, with a special focus on breakpoint conversations. Method: Two focus group interviews with certifed nurses (n=8) from surgical wards were conducted. The interviews were analysed using a qualitative content analyse method. Result: The analysis resluted in two focus areas: the impact of the organisations structure and the patients ability to participate in the breakpoint conversation. Within the first area we found descriptions of how the care of the patient depend on the interaction within the primary healthcare team, the interaction with the patient and his/her family as well as the interaction between different healthcare professions. The conduction of the actual breakpoint conversation is also affected by these different interactions. The second area described the different scenarios depending on if a breakpoint conversation took place or not and how this affected the patient care. Conclusion: There is a lack of teamwork in the palliative care on these surgical wards and the nurses rarely participate when breakpoint conversations are held. This complicates matters for everyone involved. A belated breakpoint conversation can mean unnecessary unclearity on how to care for the patient, this uncertainty can be perceived as confusing for both patient and family. A breakpoint conversation late in the disease can also impair the patients ability to participate.

Full textAbstract Background: In Sweden, approximately 200,000 people have heart failure. Heart failure can be chronic, complex and involves lifelong treatment. It is a serious disease in which about 50% with severe heart failure die within a year. There are no clear guidelines when transition to palliative care for patients with heart failure occurs. Objective: The purpose was to identify experiences that nurses considered to be important for initiating palliative care for patients with heart failure, and what actions thereafter were taken. Methods: A qualitative design with inductive approach was chosen for this study. A total of 15 unstructured interviews were conducted and analyzed on the basis of the Critical Incident Technique. Results: The result was divided into two parts. It was found that a generally deteriorated health were experiences that the nurse considered to be of importance for transition to palliative care. In the results it emerged that measures that was taken led to more oriented palliative care for the patients. Conclusion: To identify patients with heart failure who were in need of palliative care was important but difficult and required knowledge. There is a need to develop aids and tools to facilitate identification for palliative care, as it causes care to be more person-centered and the treatment strategy changes.

Full textThe purpose has been, through young migrants’ stories, to examining the factors that may have affected their study- and career choices. In order to study this, life stories have been used as method approach. Partly structured interviews were conducted with seven young migrants’ ages 19-21 years, who have studied in their home countries, moved to Sweden and today study in a national high school program. Interview material were processed and analyzed with the help of thematic content analysis. The results showed that the young migrants’ felt positive about their futures and that the study and career choices made in their home countries, to some extent, still exist. The schooling system and difficulty with the Swedish language have limited the youths’ possibilities to demonstrate their knowledge, which could lead to that their aspirations may change, their academic development may be impeded and their academic years prolonged.

Full textMany people who suffer from fatigue syndrome (UMS) experience a reduced cognitive ability that becomes a turning point, leading to a crossroad that requires a well-functioning action plan for the future. In this study, interviews with people that are or have been diagnosed with UMS have shared their opinions regarding career guidance, whether career guidance is needed, and what type of guidance they perceive as needed. The results from the qualitative interviews were analyzed drawing on careership theory and constructivist theory, showing that people with UMS are in need of a life change that requires new insight, perspective and foresight for a successful return to work and a healthy way of relating to work and accomplishment. Furthermore, the study shows that there is a need for a holistic approach where the individual's own life story is put at the center, since no medications or ready-made solutions that suit everyone exist. Career management skills and lifelong learning are central parts of this study and with an expertise within this area, a career counsellor’s contribution, i.e. career guidance, can be of great benefit to people with UMS.

Full textThe turning point from upper secondary school can be understood as a definitive crossroadswith an abundance of choices for young people. The purpose of this study was to, through aquantitative survey, study how students in year three of the science, social sciences andeconomics program in Stockholm County planned and motivated their choice for the next phasein life, and to see how this differed based on the background factors gender, ethnicity and placeof residence, as well as to get an overview of how upper secondary school students experiencethe turning point from upper secondary school and how they see their own horizons for action.The results have then been analysed based on Hodkinson & Sparkes Careership Theory (1997,2008). The results showed that ethnicity as well as the students' place of residence to someextent made a difference in how the students planned their educational and career choices. Thechoice to study, work or take a sabbatical was mainly motivated by interest, the need for a breakfrom studies and to further plan for their future. We also concluded from the results of the studythat the majority of respondents experienced high to some satisfaction with their plannedchoice. Grades were what the students experienced as most limiting in planning for their future.
