Summary Objectives: Electroencephalographic burst activity characteristic of burst-suppression pattern (BSP) in sedated patients and of burst-interburst pattern (BIP) in the quiet sleep of healthy neonates have similar linear and non-linear signal properties. Strong interrelations between a slow frequency component and rhythmic, spindle-like activities with higher frequencies have been identified in previous studies. Time-varying characteristics of BSP and BIP prevent a definite pattern-related analysis. A continuous estimation of the bispectrum is essential to analyze these patterns. Parametr

Bulk-Synchronous Parallel (BSP) is a bridging model between abstract execution and concrete parallel architectures that retains enough information to model performance scalability. In order to model BSP program executions, Hains adapted the theory of finite automata to the BSP paradigm by introducing BSP automata [12]. In the initial description of the theory, BSP automata had to be explicitly defined as structured sets of states and transitions. The lack of a clean and efficient algorithm for generating them from regular expressions would have prevented this theory from being used in practice

Valiant's model of bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) computation does not allow the programmer to synchronize a subset, rather than the complete set of a parallel computer's processors. This is perceived by many to be an obstacle to expressing divide-and-conquer algorithms in the BSP model. We argue that the divide-and-conquer paradigm fits naturally into the BSP model, without any need for subset synchronization. The proposed method of divide-and-conquer BSP programming is fully compliant with the BSP computation model. The method is based on sequentially interleaved threads of BSP computation,

Abstract:
7666 Background: Bone sialoprotein (BSP) and osteopontin (OPN) have been demonstrated predictive of bone metastases in breast and prostate carcinoma, consistent with the proposed role of BSP as a stimulator of bone mineralization and OPN in differentiation and activation of osteoclasts. Bone metastasis (BM) is often developed in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but no predictive biomarker was identified for high risk of metastatic bone dissemination. Methods: 180 completely resected NSCLC patients were included in this study. 38 patients subsequently developed BM. Paraffin embedded primary

AbstractThe dependence of the solar cycle duration, T, on the 3 years averaged module of the large-scale sunspots magnetic fields (30-60 arcsec), Bsp index, was investigated on the base of about 10,000 visual observations conducted during last eight (16-23) cycles. It was found that the duration T of the investigated cycles linearly depends on the index Bsp of the magnetic fields observed during 3 years on decline phase of the solar cycle (second, third and fourth years after solar maximum Tmax). Namely, the duration of the cycles T was varied between 9,5 and 12,5 years, when the magnetic inde

Computing a spanning tree (ST) and a minimum ST (MST) of a graph are fundamental problems in graph theory and arise as a subproblem in many applications. In this article, we propose parallel algorithms to these problems. One of the steps of previous parallel MST algorithms relies on the heavy use of parallel list ranking which, though efficient in theory, is very time-consuming in practice. Using a different approach with a graph decomposition, we devised new parallel algorithms that do not make use of the list ranking procedure. We proved that our algorithms are correct, and for a graph [Form

This study evaluated bone response to a Ca- and P- enriched titanium (Ti) surface treated by a multiphase anodic spark deposition coating (BSP-AK). Two mongrel dogs received bilateral implantation of 3 Ti cylinders (4.1 x 12 mm) in the humerus, being either BSP-AK treated or untreated (machined - control). At 8 weeks postimplantation, bone fragments containing the implants were harvested and processed for histologic and histomorphometric analyses. Bone formation was observed in cortical area and towards the medullary canal associated to approximately 1/3 of implant extension. In most cases, in

Abstract:
The orientation of the TATA box is thought to direct downstream transcription of eukaryotic genes by RNA polymerase II. However, the putative TATA box in the promoter of the bone sialoprotein (BSP) gene, which codes for a tissue-specific and developmentally regulated bone matrix protein, is inverted (5′-TTTATA-3′) relative to the consensus TATA box sequence (5′-TATAAA-3′) and is overlapped by a vitamin D3-response element. Here we show that the inverted TATA sequence in the rat BSP gene binds to recombinant TATA-box-binding protein (TBP) with an affinity similar to that observed with the conse

Osteocalcin, also called Bone Gla Protein (BGP), is the most abundant of the non-collagenous proteins of bone produced by osteoblasts. It consists of a single chain of 46-50 amino acids, according to the species, and contains three vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxyglutamic acid residues (GLA), involved in its binding to calcium and hydroxylapatite. Accumulating evidences suggest its involvement in bone remodeling, its physiological role, however, is still unclear. In this study the adhesion properties and the biological effects of osteocalcin on osteoclasts have been analyzed using as an exper

Abstract:
The Bulk Synchronous Parallel ML (BSML) is a functional language for BSP programming, a model of computing which allows parallel programs to be ported to a wide range of architectures. It is based on an extension of the ML language by parallel operations on a parallel data structure called parallel vector, which is given by intention. We present a new approach to certifying BSML programs in the context of type theory. Given a specification and a program, an incomplete proof of the specification (of which algorithmic contents corresponds to the given program) is built in the type theory, in whi
