Abstract:
This thesis explores the role of Buddhist education in Chinese history and the background that caused modern Buddhist monasteries in Taiwan to establish higher educational institutions. I begin my investigation with a brief survey of Buddhist education in pre-modern China, but turn quickly to the Republican period when Buddhism was regarded as a declining religion that brought no contribution to a society seeking modernization. Against this background, the revolutionary monk- Taixu championed a series of reforms, including reforms to Buddhist education. The modern scholar, Holmes Welch, writin

This thesis contends that older persons, whose mental capabilities remain intact, are capable of expanding their conscious awareness; they have not necessarily passed their prime as they begin the process of retiring. They may be showing a worn and weakened package but this does not mean they cannot live a fulfilling life. This is the reason for the development of a new form of therapy, called 'Trans-subjective Therapy', because it combines the objective and the subjective with the trans-personal, or unconscious levels of consciousness. Abstract:
This interdisciplinary study explores the dialogical space between Buddhism and economics grounded upon an empirical examination of the lived experience of western Buddhist teachers. The goal of Buddhist practice is enlightenment, a powerfully liberating and transformative understanding in which the ordinary sense of self is extinguished. There is a variety of claims made by Buddhist traditions regarding enlightenment, and little agreement as to its exact nature; most Buddhist traditions, however, regard the self as having no essential basis. This view contrasts sharply with those of contempor

Since the 1990s, the religious diversity of United States universities has increased, with growing numbers of students, faculty, and staff who are Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Humanist. To support these demographics, university chaplaincies have been developing beyond their Christian and Jewish compositions to include chaplains and programs for these traditions. Through interviews with such chaplains, this project thesis examines how these chaplaincies developed, the preparation the chaplains needed, their responsibilities, and the current challenges and future prospects of these programs. Abstract:
Historical approaches to the civilization of India can provide a useful complement to the predominately synchronic ethnographic analyses of anthropology. In particular, a fully historical view illuminates the many conflicts and tensions within Indian society that have shaped its pervasive religious idiom. The relationship between Brahminism and Buddhism, in ancient times, reflects a deeper ethno-political alignment of Aryans versus aboriginals on the subcontinent, and each of these religious traditions developed in dialectical opposition to the other through the centuries.
