The main purpose of this work was to study and understand the interaction that occurred between an acid solution spilled from Buenavista del Cobre Mine and the soils located in the Bacanuchi River area. The question put forward in this work was: if the soils of the area were able to cushion the impact of the acid solution?. Two soil profiles were examined: Profile 8A, was located on the riverbank and was affected by the spill, whilst Profile 8B, located on the first terrace of the river valley, remained intact . The Velardeña mining district is economically the most important of Durango state. The ore deposits occur in different skarn zones developed within the intrusive contact between Mesozoic limestones and Eocene granitic stocks and dikes. The most important ore deposits are related to the Santa María dike and Reyna de Cobre porphyritic stock (separated from each other by 10 km). They occur as irregularly shaped replacement masses developed near the intrusive contact and have a skarn paragenesis dominated by calc-silicates and sulfides. The mineral assemblages show replacement textures and are dom

In the state of Sonora, the 2009 Hermosillo ABC Day Care Center fire and the 2014 Cananea copper mine spill highlighted how deregulation and divestiture of state services by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the National Action Party (PAN) served the interests of a few elites, who maintained rule through mechanisms of impunity: in other words, through actions undertaken without concern about the law or repercussions. Although impunity produces a seemingly incoherent set of policy and politics, results from dozens of semi-structured interviews by our team also suggest that exercis

Despite its brevity, this watery passage symbolically foregrounds the Marian devotion on the southern rim of the grand harbor. In this way, water conjoins African diasporic histories of enslavement, labor, survival, resistance, daily life, and religiosity within Havana Bay, into which two urban geographies project. Abstract The aim of this study is to characterise environmental impacts associated with mining operations in the Sonora River basin, a water-scarce region of Mexico. The focus is on evaluating water availability, water quality, and sediment composition along the river. Furthermore, the quality of groundwater for human consumption is assessed. Data collected from an extensive field campaign is employed for this purpose. For the first time, measurements of groundwater levels in conjunction with satellite data have shown a substantial decline in groundwater levels in the northern part of the Sono

Abstract Purpose The Buenavista del Cobre mine is in a semiarid environment in NW Mexico. A part of the mine tailings dam has been flooded with wastewater from Cananea, generating an artificial wetland. The main objectives of this work were to evaluate the effect of wastewater on the pedogenesis of wetland Technosols developed on mine tailings and to compare them with the soil of non-irrigated tailings and with a natural soil profile. A review of frequently cited publications reveals a lack of consistency in assessing the accuracy of archaeological feature classifications in lidar data with variables such as sensor type, class definitions, and ground-truthing methods differentially affecting assessment results across the Lowlands.
