Abstract:
This article addresses the association between death and fossils that Buffon developed across the thirty-six volumes of his Histoire naturelle and its implications for his literary project. Through a study of the connections between Buffon's physiological theory of death, his fable of the first man, his anthropological treatment of funeral rites among non-European peoples, his statistical studies of life expectancy, and his personalized discussion of fossils at the end of his life, I argue that over the course of Buffon's career the imaginative trope connecting death to ossification and petrification shaped both his natural philosophy and his literary project. This trope found its richest expression in Buffon's last work, the Histoire naturelle des minéraux, which I interpret as his testament.

Abstract:
The aim of this work will be to analyze the reading that Merleau-Ponty makes of the Oedipus complex, to identify, thereof, the path that the French philosopher makes in the phenomenological study of a key period of childhood. Infantile polymorphism, the historical roots of the places established in a community, the historical and dialectical approach to development, and pre-maturation will be some of the features from which Merleau-Ponty analyzes the Oedipus Complex. I consider that the description that Merleau-Ponty makes of this complex together with the critique of the universalist conception of psychoanalysis present in themselves a phenomenological approach to development, from which they emerge; on the one hand, relevant theoretical guidelines for the situated, bodily, and non-reductionist study of infantile experience and, on the other, a redefinition of the subject and the body schema in eminently intersubjective terms. Abstract:
This essay argues that the concept of deep time is essential to the intellectual history of the Anthropocene—the name widely (though not yet formally) used for our current geological epoch. Buffon’s Epochs of Nature, one of the earliest secular models of geological time in Enlightenment natural history, uses inscription as a metaphor to mark the advent of biological species, including humans, in the course of earth history. The Anthropocene extends this project of writing ourselves into the rock record. Buffon makes a productive interlocutor for the Anthropocene because he is one of the first to examine climate change and related constraints on human agency in the context of deep time. The essay examines Buffon’s natural history and associated Enlightenment discourses of primitive art and culture to gain a purchase on the challenges of scale posed by the Anthropocene.

Abstract:
Buffon’s “Guarouba” or “Perriche jaune” is illustrated in his magnificent “Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux” and was interpreted by Buffon as the same bird described by Marcgrave in the 17th century as “Guarouba” or “Quijubatui”. Nevertheless, the bird described by Marcgrave corresponds to the species formally described by Gmelin (1789) as Psittacus guarouba and currently known as Guarouba guarouba. Buffon’s bird was named Psittacus luteus Boddaert, 1783, became the type-species of the genus Aratinga, and has long been considered a junior synonym of Psittacus solstitialis Linnaeus, 1758 (now Aratinga solstitialis). However, Buffon’s illustration, upon which the description of P. luteus Boddaert, 1783 was based, is not an Aratinga solstitialis, but a similar species recently redescribed and named Aratinga pintoi Silveira, Lima & Höfling, 2005. An earlier, although long overlooked, older synonym of P. luteus, is Psittacus maculatus Statius Müller, 1776, also based on Buffon’s plate, and which turns out to be the valid nomen of this species. Thus, Aratinga maculata (Statius Müller, 1776) comb. nov. is the senior synonym of both Psittacus luteus Boddaert, 1783 syn. nov. and Aratinga pintoi Silveira, Lima & Höfling, 2005 syn. nov. In order to establish nomenclatural stability, the holotype of Aratinga pintoi is here designated as neotype of both Psittacus maculatus and Psittacus luteus, establishing an objective synonymy among the three nomina.

In 1733, as part of a programme to publish its early works in a uniform format, the Paris Academy of Sciences reprinted Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire naturelle des animaux ( Histoire des animaux ), last published in 1676, a work of both natural history and mechanistic anatomy. However, unlike the other works in this enterprise, Histoire des animaux was extensively edited and updated. In 1749 Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon published the first volume of Histoire naturelle . Its volumes on quadrupeds, written with Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton, held significant similarities to Histoire des animaux . The relationship between these works has not hitherto been examined. Buffon's early ideas on species, in particular, resemble the emphasis on particulars of Histoire des animaux .

Abstract:
The presence of an aesthetic judgment in an anthropological, scientific study may seem incongruous. One would think that the human body should be approached only in terms of "objective" criteria of functionality and measurable proportions. However, to our surprise, two adjectives keep coming up in Buffon's description of the human body in his Histoire naturelle de l'Homme: 'beautiful' and 'ugly'. To be sure, it is possible to determine that a person is beautiful through measurements and observations of bodily and facial symmetry, but most often, these proportions are not enough to explain why we find a person beautiful. How does Buffon think about beauty when he writes the Natural History of Man? Does he understand it as a classificatory tool based on an objective system of measurement, or does he use his personal preference? On what criteria does he judge the physical aspect of the varieties in the human species?

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Heterodimerization of the intermediate affinity Interleukin-2 Receptors (IL-2R), IL-2Rβ and IL-2Rγ, initiates a signaling cascade in T and NK cells that ultimately results in proliferation and production of Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). Binding of IL-2 in a dimeric complex with intermediate affinity or in the high affinity trimeric complex, which also includes IL-2Rα and is predominantly expressed on antigen activated T cells and Tregs leads to trans-phosphorylation of signaling motifs on the IL-2Rβ and IL-2Rγ intracellular domains by the associated JAK kinases. The function of the wild type IL-2 is to bring the receptor chains in close proximity to produce an optimal level of phosphorylation and activation of associated STAT transcription factors. Here we established a way to bring IL-2Rβ and IL-2Rγ chains together in a cytokine-independent manner that results in functional activation. Experimental Procedures: Human IL-2Rβ and IL-2Rγ specific heavy chain single domain antibodies (VHH) were generated by camel immunization and screening of VHH libraries prepared from peripheral blood cells for binding. Ten IL-2Rβ VHH segments and six IL-2Rγ VHH segments, all with low nanomolar affinity, were identified and coupled as IL-2Rβ/IL-2Rγ VHH dimers in all possible combinations in both amino-carboxy and carboxy-amino orientations yielding 120 different proteins that were tested in human T and NK cell functional assays. Results: IL-2Rβ/IL-2Rγ VHH dimers were biologically active and induced pSTAT-5 phosphorylation in the IL-2 dependent NK cell line NKL at various levels. The biological activity of these IL-2Rβ/IL-2Rγ VHH dimers was further confirmed on primary cells. IL-2Rβ/IL-2Rγ VHH dimers induced pSTAT5 phosphorylation on NK cells isolated from human peripheral blood and culture with IL-2Rβ/IL-2Rγ VHH dimers resulted in proliferation and production of high but varied levels of IFN-γ. The activity of IL-2Rβ/IL-2Rγ VHH dimers on primary T cells was also examined. Similar to NK cells, IL-2Rβ/IL-2Rγ VHH dimers induced pSTAT5 phosphorylation, proliferation and IFN-γ production by CD4 positive and CD8 positive T cell blasts generated after CD3/CD28 activation of human PBMC. Conclusions: In conclusion, we have generated a series of functional IL-2Rβ/IL-2Rγ VHH dimers representing surrogate cytokine agonists each with unique signaling strengths that will now be further analyzed for potential therapeutic application in tumor immunology and auto-immunity Citation Format: Rene de Waal Malefyt, PJ Aspuria, Sandro Vivona, Priyanka Balasubrahmanyam, Cindy Buffone, Mahalakshmi Ramadass, Romina Riener, Martin Oft, Patrick Lupardus, Robert Kastelein.

Abstract:
In current practice, the buffing process required to finish the surface of mechanical parts is performed manually by a technical expert as it requires a delicate adjustment of the buffing force. The automation of this process is desirable in an effort to shorten the process time and reduce labor cost. To automate the buffing process, a beneficial process monitoring technique that supervises the buffing tool conditions in real time must be developed. From a practical perspective, an observer technique that does not require additional sensors would be most suitable for monitoring the tool operating condition. The authors propose a technique that estimates the buffing tool stiffness based on a disturbance observer. The validity of the proposed method as a buffing tool condition monitoring technique is verified through numerical simulations and experiments.

Abstract:
Electrochemical buffing technology (ECB) applies electrochemical and mechanical finishing characteristics in the surface finishing process. ECB can buff ultrahigh purity components to make them shine, without leaving residual stress, micro-cracks, and etc. The control parameters of the ECB process include current density, the rate of revolution of the buffing head, the buffing pressure on the surface, the concentration of electrolyte, the buffing time and others. Improper control parameter setting in the process will result in unsatisfactory surface quality. It is necessary to determine optimal control parameters of an ECB process with robust performance that can insure surface quality and process reliability. In this study, parametric analyses were conducted on electrochemical buffing technology. An ECB system with a CNC machine was established. The buffing head was clamped on the tool holder of the CNC machine. It was used on a flat surface for automatic surface buffing. Taguchi′s parameter design approach is employed to evaluate signal-to-noise ratios (SN) given from various levels of these factors. Then, the optimized control parameters will be recognized thus can get the optimal surface buffing, reducing with the lowest variability. The contribution of every factor to the sum of square is calculated. An experiment is performed using the optimal control parameters to confirm the results of the previous experiment. The results reveal that the ECB process yields the desired mirror-like surface.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Buffon added 14 notes contributed by one or both of the Forsters to the sixth supplement of the Histoire Naturelle published in Paris in 1782. All these additions deal with mammals, mainly South African: nine South African antelopes, the spring hare, tame sheep and three antelopes not found at the Cape of Good Hope. The descriptions are compared with the drawings by George Forster in the British Museum (Natural History) and with the Descriptiones Animalium written by J. R. Forster about 1775, but not published until 1844. Buffon included two plates engraved after drawings made by George Forster depicting the klipspringer and spring hare.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) processes, ceria is generally used as the abrasive . After the CMP process, many ceria particles adhere to the wafer surface and must be removed prior to subsequent processing. In this study, the effect of varied viscosity was investigated during the buffing CMP process for ceria particle removal. After contaminating the wafer surface with ceria slurry, the ceria particles were removed through the buffing CMP process. The wafer surface was analyzed through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to confirm cleaning efficiency. The ICP-MS data showed that, as buffing CMP solution viscosity increased, cleaning efficiency improved. These results suggest that increasing the viscosity of the buffing CMP solution improves its effectiveness in removing ceria particles.
