Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture and Planning, 1994.

The 1937 Paris Exhibition, the "final European enactment of the ritual of peace and progress before the deluge," remains the least researched and most misunderstood in the history of the World's Exhibitions in France. This study deals primarily with the years that preceded the opening of the Exhibition and with the broad debates that led to its "invention." In order to establish the historical foundations of the Exhibition, attention is given first to the political, aesthetic and economic discourses developed throughout the nineteenth century in France on the occasion of its Expositions Universelles. This analysis reveals the existence of a specific typology of the French Exposition Universelle grounded in the French Enlightenment and in its encyclopedist ideals. The present study claims that this type culminates in the 1867 Exhibition, when, for the first time, the Dideroan encyclopedist ideal and the Saint-Simonian modernist credo--two theoretical premises of these exhibitions-- receive their most convincing spatial translation. Conversely, the 1937 Exhibition appears as the "end" of this long typological development when the specific spatial concept of the Exposition Universelle created in the eighteenth century finally collapses. This evolution reflects two different approaches to the Enlightenment. One stems from an authoritarian interpretation of the encyclopedist universalism which appeals to Napoleon Ill's regime. The other emerges as a populist, and perhaps Voltairian interpretation of the Siecle des Lumieres that reaches its full expression in 1937, hand in hand with the advent of the Front Populaire. The evanescence of the nineteenth century universalist authoritarianism, and its concomitant quest for a controlling style creates an ambiguous space for the emergence of a planned stylistic pluralism. Such relativization of the concept of style, evident in 1937, in turn announces the end of the concept of "style" altogether, or else of modernity understood as an issue of style. The principled openness to "all styles" propounded by the leadership of the 1937 Exhibition alienates from the outset, the most radical proponents of modernism in the arts, on suspicions of cultural fraud. Such accusations set the stage for still enduring misinterpretations of the event, namely for the belief that the leadership of the 1937 Exhibition was part of a conspiracy against "progressive" modernity. Under such circumstances, current scholarship explains the apparently paradoxical presence of many modernist architects and artists at the 1937 Exhibition as the work of the Front Populaire. The present study explains why this was not the case. The central place given here to Le Corbusier reflects the major role the architect played in his militant efforts to take control over the ...

Abstract:
It has been established by several studies that interactive exhibitions in museums bring many benefits to the experience of its visitors. This thesis explores how to make the exhibition Människor och idéer i rörelse (People and Ideas in Motion) interactive. This exhibition took place at the Workroom of Rörelsernas Museum (Museum of Movements) in Malmö. The exhibition was designed so that no one needed to go inside, but rather view and interact with the content of the exhibition from the street, which was displayed on the windows of the Workroom.Through a context-based design approach, the design process consisted of three main phases: inspiration, ideation and implementation. Throughout the design process, it was defined that in order to maintain the distance measures needed, it was adamant to employ technology as a design material. Following a number of testings, the specific technologies that were to be used were defined, namely capacitive sensors. Following this, the project delves into the steps needed in order to define the output of sensors. The final product consisted of four sensors. Two of these were connected to surprise boxes that enhanced the visual content of the exhibition. The other two were connected to a sound system that employed the windows as speakers, providing extra information about the museum and the exhibition.

The Internationale Bauausstellung or International Building Exhibition (IBA) is a planning methodology implemented over the course of the 20th century and into the 21st century in Germany. The IBA is unique and characterized by a mix of seemly contradictory conditions. In composition, IBAs are characterized by being site- and time-specific by a mix of seemly contradictory conditions. In composition. IBAs are characterized by being site- and time-specific, long-term and temporary, driven by experimentation and independent in their urban development role. Conceptually, the IBA is driven by theoretical and practical experimentation and a goal to produce "models for the city of the future" that address paradigmatic shifts in urban development. After urban renewal, physical planning lost efficacy and the confidence for imaginative visions to be concretely brought to life. The IBA sits as an outlier in this commonly held conception of physical planning and urban design history. The IBA remains capable of large-scale transformations alongside careful experimentation that pushes existing thinking about the city forward. It is both conceptually ambitious and sensitively grounded in local regeneration. This study is focused on the meaning-making of the IBA-how it constructs new understandings of building: physical transformation and image-making for the city. Three contemporary IBAs were selected as cases to analyze the IBA methodology in its current implementation: 2010 IBA Saxony-Anhalt, 2013 IBA Hamburg and nascent 2020 IBA Berlin. In order to understand the dynamics of the IBA, this thesis is organized around three theoretical frames to analyze the IBA: city imaging, cultural regeneration and mega-events. Each of these frames deals with the complexity of building as an ideological act that shapes not only physical form but also the shape of the city in our minds. Based on analysis of the IBA, this thesis offers strategies for an approach towards the project of the city that can be as variegated as the urban context requires while maintaining the ambitions of urban design towards new models for the city of the future. towards new models for the city of the future.

Abstract:
This paper studies the types of buildings called Pavilions and Exhibition Centers of a covered area in excess of 20,000 sq. m. (215.28 sq. ft) as exhibition space existing in the city of São Paulo. First, a survey is presented on the background of the developments that preceded the current Trade Fairs and Industrial Shows and their reverberations in space, from Classical Antiquity, through Medieval Fairs and the Industrial Revolution in Europe to the Universal Exhibitions. Based on that framework, the operationality of this typology, its agents and the relations underlying its main activities, their location and other urban facilities with complementary functions are detailed. Next, examples from our state capital and from other cities are reviewed, in an attempt to draw the components that characterize a pavilion or exhibition center. These approaches lead the way to a proposed general program and to the graphic representation of the physical layout of these buildings (fl ow chart). Finally, a study on the dynamics of fairs and exhibitions identifi es the characteristics capable of exerting an infl uence and/or determining the need and confi guration of spaces. The main conclusions on the core theme are then set out as a contribution to future studies on this type of construction, whether for the purpose of construction renovation or retrofi tting or for new implementation.

Abstract:
Brno will continue to be the city and the centre of the fairs. The historical part around the pavilion A is opened to public and the fairs are concentrated around the pavilion Z, where a new city entrance is planned within a linear park, also a new pavilion and a superstructure with residence of BVV is planned. Newly, the terminal Lipová is designed with the cableway station, which is not only an attraction over the valley of Pisárky, but also represents a form of transport to the campus Bohunice and back to the trade fair center. The design of an exhibition pavilion is situated in a part of Brno-Pisárky, in western area of BVV. The Pavilion contains an exhibition hall and an entrance edifice on a new axis directed from an Anthropos over an superstructure on a significant pavilion Z. The entrance edifice in a central of pavilion is surrounded by exhibition area and its centre is plaza with natural woody plants and colonnade. Entries are leaded on galleries on this level. Galleries are opened into the exhibition hall. A restaurant has a specific view on the dominant-pavilion Z. A visitor goes through the plaza and descends on monumental stairs to the pavilion Z into area of BVV in a primary direction. The visitor descents from the plaza over each galleries to the exhibiton area in a secondary direction. The proposal offers to the visitors and exhibitors not only gathering outdoor relaxation area on the plaza, but moreover interesting experiences from galleries. The total built area of the pavilion is almost equal to the exhibition area, because the design creates the entry level on the third floor. The new building meets the requirements of modern exhibitions and will be used for social and educational events - balls, weddings, conferences, cultural events - concerts, theater, opera performances and sports events. The Pavilion will be visited by inhabitents of all ages not only from Brno, from near and distant surroundings, but also by visitors from abroad.

Lu, Yi. "Directed visibility analysis: three case studies on the relationship between building layout, perception and behavior." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/39569.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of the spatial affordances of buildings that allow them to organize and transmit cultural ideas and to support the performance of organizational roles. The particular affordances under consideration are those that arise from the manner in which buildings structure the visual fields that are potentially available to a situated observer. In studying directed visibility patterns, supported by the development of appropriate analytical tools, we focus on a previously specified set of visual targets and ask how many become visible from each occupiable location. Parametric restrictions concerning the direction into which a subject faces and the viewing angle sustained by the target object are also taken into consideration. The aim is to demonstrate how such refinements of visibility analysis, lead to more precise and penetrating insights as to how building users tune their behavior to the spatial affordances of environment, and how the environment impacts their understanding in turn. Three different studies were presented. The fist used directed visibility measures to evaluate the affordances of different nursing-unit designs relative to how well nurses are able to survey patients in different rooms as they go about their duties. The second study focuses on the manner in which nurses and physicians position themselves in a Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU), particularly when interacting. The third study investigates how aware exhibition visitors become of the visual structure of environment and how the visibility structure of exhibitions affects the ability of visitors to conceptually group paintings according to their thematic content. The case studies support the following conclusions. 1) The way in which people position themselves in an environment as they perform their assigned tasks is tuned to the way in which visual fields are structured. 2) The visual structure of environment is contingent upon the interaction between the underlying structure of visual fields and paths of movement. 3) Directed visibility analysis leads to stronger correlations with behavior and performance than generic visibility analysis. This implies that environments are layered. Their underlying spatial structure is charged by the distribution of the contents that are programmatically primary.

The subject of the diploma thesi is the design and assessment of the pavilions supporting structure for exhibition and other purposes. The building is located close to Zlin. Preliminary designs of supporting structure were created. One of these was selected and detaileddesigned and assessed. Generallythere are two structures that are extended between themselves. A design and assessment of the entrance portal for the exhibition pavilion was created. The entrance portal is an atypical structure that was created from a combination of hyperboloid and cylinder. The entire portal is formed of welded parts and it is completely from glass. The entrance portal has a variable height, where the highest point is 8,258m. The entrance portal is 20,394m long and has a variable width, where the largest width is 12,000m. The exhibition hall, which is located behind the entrance portal was designed from flat arched truss trusses. The arched trusses are made of several radii and hasa overall impression of an elliptical truss. The trusses have a range 37,000m and they are axially distant 6,000m. The height of the arched trusses is 10.530m. In the leading position of the construction were designed pillars and construction for possible connection of the entrance portal, or for the location of the gate system. Whole construction of the exhibition pavilion, without the entry portal, is 54,000m long and 37,000m wide. The built-up area of both structures is approximately 2200m2. Construction are designed according to normative requirements of CSN EN for limit state of load capacity and usability. The main material of the supporting structural parts was used S355JR steel.

Abstract:
This thesis intends to investigate the production of architecture in the Between the decades of 1960-70. It is a premise that it should be included in the Methodological approach in the history of architecture, starting from the understanding that architecture is Of the dialectic between the autonomy of the project and the state of the productive forces in Certain historical moment. The reflections proposed here attempt to articulate multiple Relationships within the architecture production process - which means including from the Design, design, and even use - corroborating Understanding, rather than the discipline of architecture itself. Anhembi Park, an exhibition center linked to tourism Business in São Paulo, allows us to analyze three levels of production: the industrialization of Structure, the pre-fabrication of concrete and the adoption of new Reinforced concrete executed in the bed, themes that can characterize the \"plurality\" Of the post-Brasilia period, or even to explain the constructive concern Which interwoven many boards at that moment. The possibility that opens in the Investigation of the object considered as a new urban centrality and the analysis of how It would be possible to embrace the theme of the design practices at that moment in which Strengthened an important relationship between urbanism, architecture, engineering and construction. Abstract:
This dissertation is focused on the study of pavilions and their relationship with the three-dimensional production - understood as installation and sculpture. Therefore, the concept of \"expanded field\", elaborated by Rosalind Krauss in the 1979 essay to encompass the transformation of sculpture from the 60\'s, is articulated with the recent shift of this same concept into the realm of architecture by some authors, namely Antony Vidler. The research is not just an investigation on the contribution of the architectural space for sculpture or, on the other hand, from sculpture to architecture, but focuses especially the line that separates them, understood as a disposition of convergence by the two disciplines which dissolves the reciprocal bonds in a interstitial production, performed by artists, architects or even both together. The pavilion has always been understood as an experimental field for architects, especially during the twentieth century when it helped consolidate the assumptions of modern architecture. Today it has gained great visibility through several programs that offer specific conditions by commissioning and assuming a unique architecture design that sets up a production untied from the binomial form-function, resulting in a self referent building whose subject is the architecture itself. From the point of view of the arts, it represents an expansion of the installation configuring a spatial whole that also implicate the building and, when taken as meta architecture, also operates as a platform for critical confrontation. The opposition on theory about the ramifications of the expanded field, as well as a research on the essential characteristics to a malleable term, are faced with a critical analysis of selected cases in three institutions gathering rather distinct characteristics - the Venice Biennale, the Institute of Contemporary Art Inhotim and the Serpentine Gallery -, and allow conclusions on this contemporary production in a disciplinary threshold.

Abstract:
The dissertation thesis studies the extension of the context of the term model as a means of interpretation for Czech and Slovak post-conceptual works of art. Based on result of a historical excursion into the history of painting, sculpture and architecture, the thesis offers a new typology of a model which is exemplified on particular work of art of Czech and Slovak post-conceptual era in the first two decades of the 21st century. The historical part of the thesis concludes the following: model in the art is an emancipated form originating from different academic as well as layman discourse; emancipated model has a methaphorical layer and thus it reflects wide historical, cultural and social relations. The categories proposed include: a linear model, a physical model, a cognitive model and an immersive model. The linear model encompases the sketch themes and so-called visualization metaphors (graphs, charts, schemes, etc) and originates as a reaction to information saturation and complicated networks. The physical model is a form to architecture and hobby modelling, it is characterised by a simple, „sketchy“ structure reacting to social themes and individual and collective memory. The cognitive model points to the cognitive turn of the society, it evaluates the materialisation of mental space and explains the emancipated model as an open category. Finally, the immersive model interprets the medium of exhibition as a model form which is articulated by and artisitic manifesto or an architectural interference. Another form of immersion that is being discussed in the chapter about immersive models, is a photographic or 3 D computer illusion as a reaction to society‘s virtualisation. Simultaneously to theoretical-historical research, an artistic research was taking place which became the basis for the creation of different categories and typologies of model. Each proposed category thus includes a so-called author‘s note reflecting the practical part of the dissertation thesis.

Abstract:
Diploma project develops the intention to build up an ecological project based on renewable resources utilization of energy and materials recycling in Zábřeh. The study is engaged in possible area extension and tries to divide it into functional zones, when zone of main production remains the same (already elaborated project) and the zone of extension where there is settled production storages, alt.production hall extension. Third zone, so-called green zone, is developed in more detail. The green zone is a belt of plot separating the production area from second-class road nr.315, and also creates entrance gateway and lungz of the whole area. The green belt is conceived as a sojourn park with water elements(biotopes, lake, water basin), which is intersected by wooden footbridge, that connects object of multifunction pavilion and office building and ends at articifial island, or more precisely as a torso in the lake waters, symbolizing the science, which´s end is far away for human beings. The footbridge is also an axis between planned science-technological centres for the direct processing of waste materials. Administration building and pavilion are conceived as a „second nature“, purely human artifact, whih is also clearly expressed in „non-natural“ materials used. Their concept tries to saturate client´s requests and use the renewable resources of energy with observance of building biology principles (author´s request) at the same time.

Abstract:
The main task of diploma is creating a sacral object and community centre of Salesians in Brno-Líšeň. A construction of the Salesian complex started in 1998. As a result, the whole complex of institution got to the district of Brno-Lisen with the help of the endowment fund for youth. The Congregation focuses on the methods of educating the youth of Don Bosco, the father and teacher of the youth, the first head of the Salesian. The creation of a church is a very desirable step for the Salesian Center, because Masses are currently being celebrated in the existing building in the gym, where not everything is needed to carry out of the event. The church should be developed in the vicinity of Salesian centre and has to be available for a wide range of societies. The architectural project includes the designing of church, parish building and enviroment. The form and view of the complex suit to this environmental area and react on its entire structure. The object consists of two forms, which are connected by the horizontal communication. In the middle of the Salesian complex, there is a semi-open area. The first object is a church with a capacity of approximately 200 hundred visitors, the second object is a parish building, which perform the functions of administration with multifunction space for the exhibitions, aparmtments and offices for its employees.

The purpose of this thesis was to produce two alternative architectural designs, of a building, that will house various exhibitions and activities. Mainly those will be culture related; music and arts. The building is to be located in a Swedish lake, called Växjösjön, and the structure is intended to be placed on a floating hull.Initially the authors investigated, and discussed, what possibilities and limitations that were associated with the building. The authors then, separate from one another, created one alternative design each. The first of the two designs found its inspiration in different geometrical shapes, whereas the other was more of an organic design with a smooth and flowing architecture.

The thesis deals with the new building of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Veveří street, Brno. The area discussed is situated on the border between Brno-střed and Brno-Žabovesky. It is delineated by Veveří, Šumavská, and Bulínova streets. The design concerns a complex of two universities, which comes from the new draft of local plan of Brno. This plan copes with a draft of an underground tram track. The design also follows the building programme which has been created for an architectural competition in Akademické square in Brno. Both the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Institute of Forensic Engineering (which is expected to be converted into the Faculty of Forensic Engineering) will be moved to this compound. Furthermore, common conveniences, used by all of the dislocated organization units, will be situated there, including the assembly hall, university canteen, library, exhibition grounds and technical support. Apart from the buildings of VUT, the campus will include a parking lot, requested and financed by the municipal authority of Brno, which will replace current parking spots. The arrangement of the campus proposed will allow a successive construction - during the first phase, all the parking lots must be built and subsequently, the individual faculties. FaVU will be composed of three traditional disciplines - painting, sculpture and intermedia - which will include other subdisciplines. In the design proposed, there are also external sites designed for the art of sculpture.

This thesis intends to explore the Taiwan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in terms of exhibition establishment, exhibition planning and the policies of it from 1995 to 2015, as Taiwan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale has been executed by Taipei Fine Arts Museum(TFAM) for two decades and plays as an indicator in contemporary art in Taiwan. By utilizing document analysis and interview for data collecting, this research focuses on three perspectives: culture politics, culture policy and display theory. First, this research begins with the discussion on the motivations and purposes of the establishment of the Taiwan Pavilion from TFAM’s position, and explores if the objective has been changed over the past twenty years. Furthermore, it discusses the evolution of the exhibition planning for Taiwan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and what play the key factor contributing to the decision-making. By doing this, the policies and principles of exhibition planning can be clarified and understood. Overall, through the professional network of TFAM, the establishment of the Taiwan Pavilion has been functioned as a concrete response to the need of the society, reflecting Taiwan''s pursuit of international status in the 1990s. Over the years, from the evolution of purpose and the attempt of exhibition planning, it is not difficult to find that TFAM endeavors to enhance ‘Taiwan''s visibility’ as their main task by means of establishing Taiwan Pavilion in the international art scene continuously. However, such a condition suggests the alternative question: the lack of the study and the discourse of cultural policy behind the Taiwan Pavilion for a long time. A consequence of this view is that the future development of the Taiwan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale may need a cultural policy, considering international perspectives and overall national artistic ecology simultaneously to operate as a comprehensive guidance for the direction and promotion of Taiwan Contemporary Art.

In the 21st century, globalization increases the competitions among cities. The urban development also becomes an important symbol of a country’s power. Many cities are active to seek and develop the potential local resources. In addition, they shape the city’s images to build infrastructure and improve the living functions. Also, they adopt “marketing” to get better reputation and more popularity that make the city to win some focus and attract foreign investments from worldwide. “City marketing” is a comprehensive framework, which needs to be a subject by integrating all aspects, for instance, political, economic, and cultural... etc. Nowadays, city marketing usually uses “event” (also known as “activity”) to be a marketing method, such as organizing or participating in events, exhibitions, and activities... etc., which may help a city get more focus. In this thesis, the French pavilion in 2010 Shanhai World Expo is the main case. By investigating and analyzing the performance of Paris in the pavilion by the theory of Kotler’s “city marketing”, we discovered the effects on city marketing from this case. As a key of an effective event, we could know how the French pavilion sells Paris’ characteristics.

Exhibition industry is recognized as an important indicator of economy and internationalization in a city. It combines all industries with goods, people, capital and business information. Furthermore, it promotes the development of business, trading and tourism and creates huge economic benefits up to 9 times more. Recently, Asia has become the “economic engine” in the world, which creates a great opportunity for the development of exhibition industry. This research mainly focuses on the success factors of the exhibition. In order to the meet the purpose and set up the direction of the research, there are two parts in the survey A questionnaire were conducted firstly to exhibition experts and secondly to the exhibitors. Taking Taiwan Building Materials Exhibition for example, a combination of B2B and B2C in an exhibition were designed, studied, analyzed and discussed. Concluded and suggested by many experts and scholars, there are 7 major analysis in this research-Government policies, Exhibition facilities, Exhibition environment, Exhibition planning, Project management, Exhibition marketing, Business opportunities generated by exhibition. The study concluded that the primary factor is “Exhibition planning”. Then it came “Business opportunities generated by exhibition” and lastly “Exhibition marketing”. Exhibitor satisfaction survey told us that the most needed to be improved is “Service for the booth decoration” and “Route setting in the venue”. The study recommended to strengthen professional training, construct professional venues and facilities, upgrade services, integrate between governments, industries and research groups, enhance the environment of the exhibition in order to construct a city with exhibitions.

Abstract:
This case study examines the process of mounting a collaborative exhibition of a collection of Chinese art in a European private "museum". The context and the cross-cultural process of this art exhibition, entitled The Pavilion of Marital Harmony, made it an unusual event and place this research at the cross-roads of art history, education, anthropology and museum studies. The mounting of the exhibition is examined through the literature related to cross-cultural questions, post-colonialism, and representations of other cultures. The specific commitments required by collaborations with people whose culture is being represented are tackled. In the case examined here, several factors made the collaboration between the guest curator (and author of this thesis), the Baur Collection's curator and the Chinese collection's lender very difficult. In order to understand them, the process of the exhibition is analysed from the genesis of its idea to the exhibition closure through methodologies such as autoethnography, narrative inquiry and action research. These methods are particularly adapted to this subject in which the producer, the process and the product are intertwined and never extracted from their context. They lead the author on the path of a reflexive process of understanding, on a thorough but personal examination and introspection into a single event produced by a particular group of people. The author's narrative is put in perspective through other voices: this work would not have been complete without the points of view of the two other "collaborators", and without the public's reactions to the exhibition. The author's intent is to share with the reader a personal experience, open to multiple voices that can be read through several lenses.

With the rapid development of interactive technology and the growing popularity of social networking in recent years, digital content curating has become an emerging profession. The advance of digital interactive display technology has greatly influenced exhibitions in conventional museums, such that audiences are encouraged to engage actively in accessing information rather than passively accepting information. This trend has not only changed the behavior patterns of museum visitors but also promoted the concept of intellectualism for curators. Design thinking for exhibit design has thus changed from being technology centered to audience centered. It engages audience participation in the context of the exhibition, thereby creating an interaction between audience, artworks, and environment as an effort to enhance the audiences’ conceptual understanding and perceptual appreciation of an interactive exhibition. However, the gap between the assumption and expectation of the curator and the response and personal interpretation of the audience often presents a challenge to design thinking in terms of connecting the curator and audience. This study attempts to address this issue based on the audience perspective from both the visual and affectional aspects. This work adopted the theoretical framework of Hans-Robert Jauss’ reception aesthetics, and then used a qualitative approach to explore the interrelationship of design thinking among the digital content curator, interactive exhibition, and audience. The objective is to establish the reciprocal relation among the curator, interactive artworks, and audience, and then propose guidelines to assist the design of interactive digital content that can further advance the development of interactive exhibition as well as promote improved marketing.

The built environment puts a strain on our resources worldwide, therefore there is a need to implement circular economy. The application of circular economy in the construction industry is still in its infancy stage and research tends to focus on eco-parks and manufactured products ignoring the impacts on buildings. Circular economy is a restorative and regenerative economic approach that aims at retaining as much value as possible of products, parts and materials whilst creating a system that allows for the long life, optimal reuse, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling of products and materials. Moving from a linear economy to a circular economy presents significant benefits in the construction industry. The limited number of studies on circular economy verified the positive environmental effects in the construction industry. The aim of this study is to assess the environmental impacts and carbon footprint of the Holland Pavilion designed for disassembly. Life Cycle Assessment is a method used for quantifying the environmental impacts in the buildings. All life cycle stages are considered for this study: acquisition and production of materials, on site construction, use and maintenance, and deconstruction. This research focuses on a cradle to grave life cycle, based on data collected from bill of materials, as well as data from literature and various authors. Life cycle assessment modelling was performed using SimaPro 9.0 software connected to an Ecoinvent database. In order to access the life cycle impacts ReCiPe was used which focuses on more impact categories. The stand-alone LCA results of the Holland Pavilion using m2 as the functional unit will show that the building materials have a high environmental impact, resulting in a total environmental damage of 6.33 Pt and a carbon footprint of 140 KgCO2eq. The stand-alone LCA results of the Holland Pavilion using the whole building as the functional unit, results in a total environmental damage of 2.17 KPt and a carbon footprint of 2.8E5 KgCO2eq. Two scenarios were further analysed and these are recycling and reusing of building materials at the end-of-life of the Pavilion. The recycling and reuse scenario will reveal environmental benefits. Results show that reusing building materials has a higher environmental benefit. Government policies and tax relief can be introduced for reusing and recycling building material. This study represents a contribution of circular economy and Life cycle assessment in the built environment; a stepping stone to shape future research and may be used by designers to improve sustainability of buildings.

McDougal, Stephanie L. "The round dance halls of Texas : history of a building type, 1897-1937." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/22540.

Full text
Abstract:
Texas is home to many dance halls, but only 18 are known to have been built with a “round” (non-orthogonal) plan. Their common design was first conceived by the Austin County carpenter Joachim Hintz in 1897 for the twelve-sided Bellville Turnverein Pavilion. For the next 40 years, variations on the building type were disseminated and constructed exclusively in Central and South Texas farming communities settled by German and Czech immigrants. These structures were probably based on the octagonal barn plans promoted heavily in the agricultural press at the end of the nineteenth century, yet they look nothing like the round barns of New York and New England or the domed masonry dairy barns of the upper Midwest. This building type is unique to Texas. The majority of the state’s six-, eight-, and 12-sided dance halls were built in a line along State Highway 36 and the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad. This thesis explores the architectural history and physical characteristics of these very special Texas dance halls.

The Beigang Chiaotian Temple’s Pilgrimage is one of the most famous Mazu pilgrimage. It is registered as the Folk Customs and Related Cultural Artifacts by Yunlin country in 2008. Also, in 2010, it is designated as the Significant Folk Customs and Related Cultural Artifacts by the central competent authority because of its historic, local, traditional and cultural factors. The activities not only raise the sense of honor in Beigang but also raise the awareness of the conservation of this significant pilgrimage; local people start to pay attention to maintain and reserve this intangible cultural heritage. However, although Beigang Mazu Culture Building has already exhibit the relative items of Mazu Culture and some ancient cultural relics to public, which provided by Chiaotian Temple since 1996, it has not built an effective communication cannel between Beigang Chiaotian Temple and people who visited the exhibition; furthermore, the Beigang Chiaotian Temple’s Pilgrimage has not been well-promoted. Therefore, it all begin with the view of Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage, this paper will analysis the value of Mazu cultural heritage; also, in order to explore how museum curator and local temples design and interpret the Mazu belief to public, this paper apply the method of participant observation to investigate the Mazu Belief exhibition at domestic museums and Matsu temples. On the other hand, in order to gain the expectation and interpretation of Mazu culture heritage, which display in Beigang Mazu Culture Building, from the point of view of local residents, this paper also interview with several local preservation organization, the deity worship associations, and local cultural workers. In the last chapter, this paper will sum up the result of investigate and provide some suggestions to local temples to improve the method of reservation of Mazu belief and Pilgrimage.
