Global participation in space activity is growing as satellite technology matures and spreads. Countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America are creating or reinvigorating national satellite programs. These countries are building local capability in space through technological learning. They sometimes pursue this via collaborative satellite development projects with foreign firms that provide training. This phenomenon of collaborative satellite development projects is poorly understood by researchers of technological learning and technology transfer. The approach has potential to facilitate learning, but there are also challenges due to misaligned incentives and the tacit nature of the technology. Perspectives from literature on Technological Learning, Technology Transfer, Complex Product Systems and Product Delivery provide useful but incomplete insight for decision makers in such projects. This work seeks a deeper understanding of capability building through collaborative technology projects by conceiving of the projects as complex, socio-technical systems with architectures. The architecture of a system is the assignment of form to execute a function along a series of dimensions. The research questions explore the architecture of collaborative satellite projects, the nature of capability building during such projects, and the relationship between architecture and capability building. The research design uses inductive, exploratory case studies to investigate six collaborative satellite development projects. Data collection harnesses international field work driven by interviews, observation, and documents. The data analysis develops structured narratives, architectural comparison and capability building assessment. The architectural comparison reveals substantial variation in project implementation, especially in the areas of project initiation, technical specifications of the satellite, training approaches and the supplier selection process. The individual capability building assessment shows that most trainee engineers gradually progressed from no experience with satellites through theoretical training to supervised experience; a minority achieved independent experience. At the organizational level, the emerging space organizations achieved high levels of autonomy in project definition and satellite operation, but they were dependent on foreign firms for satellite design, manufacture, test and launch. The case studies can be summarized by three archetypal projects defined as "Politically Pushed," "Structured," and "Risk Taking." Countries in the case studies tended to start in a Politically Pushed mode, and then moved into either Structured or Risk Taking mode. Decision makers in emerging satellite programs can use the results of this dissertation to consider the broad set of architectural options for capability building. Future work will continue to probe how specific architectural decisions impact capability building outcomes in satellite projects and other technologies.

Hofreiter, Deborah. "Principal Preparation in Special Education| Building an Inclusive Culture." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10285190.

Abstract:

The importance of principal preparation in special education has increased since the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was passed in 1975. There are significant financial reasons for preparing principals in the area of special education. Recent research also shows that all children learn better in an inclusive environment. Principals who are not prepared in the area of special education have a difficult time implementing an inclusive culture at their schools. This qualitative inquiry study set out to explore principals’ perceptions of their preparation in special education and subsequent district support in building their understanding and implementation of an inclusionary culture in their schools.

Grounded in Critical Disability Theory (Hosking, 2008) and Social Justice Leadership Framework (Furman, 2012), the conceptual framework of this study, Inclusive Leadership Framework, outlined characteristics of an inclusive leader and a framework for building an inclusive culture. Some principals interviewed for the study demonstrated these characteristics and some did not. Principals wanted to learn more about special education and wanted their students to succeed. The Inclusive Leadership Framework evolved throughout the study, but was remained grounded to prevailing praxis of reflection and action.

This study examined the attitudes of principals in K-12 settings in nine Southern California school districts in order to discover their perceptions of the effect their administrative credential preparation in special education had on building an inclusive culture. In addition, principals offered their perceptions relative to how district support in special education helped inform leadership practice regarding building a culture of inclusion. Finally, participants shared anecdotal experiences revealing ways they “learned on the job” as they navigated the world of special education. Recommendations for policy and practice for administrative preparation programs and the Clear Administrative Credential process, professional development and coaching of administrators is addressed in this study.

Significant findings revealed that principals who feel unprepared in special education do not always develop an inclusionary culture, or understand its benefits to student learning. In addition, participants revealed that they would have preferred knowing more about the process of special education before taking their first administrative position. One interesting anecdotal finding suggested that administrators who are parents of a special needs child or were one themselves are very well educated in the realm of special education and take a personal interest in it. A key recommendation for policy/practice/research included making a special education goal in the Individual Induction Plan for the Clear Administrative Credential. The program includes coaching and coaches need to be provided that can instruct in special education and the building of inclusive school culture.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1993.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 105-107).
Introduction: A Technological Transformation The proposition to be argued is that architecture has the potential to reawaken us to the most basic and satisfying nuances of human experience. In this thesis the query is made into possible ways of dealing with technology as it relates to expanding the scope of human experience. Building technology has the capability to expose the fundamental characteristics within things, including natural phenomena. It could be suggested that a psychology of materials exists, which educates people who associate with them. The perception of lightness and light, for example, could be combined in a simple manner in the form of a sun scoop. Technology can through its tectonics "reveal" the phenomenon of building. Mainstream architecture, with some exceptions, does little to offer affordances with which a person can establish a cognitive dialogue. Yet, it is these aspects of buildings that correspond to a person's existing knowledge, and at the same time, offer new sensibilities that can be interpreted and inform one's perceptions. Building: Many architects seek the "safety" of conventional architectural details and materials to mask the tectonics of their buildings and, as a result, tend to dull the understanding of the architectural and tectonic fact of those buildings from the people who use them. The Wiesner Arts and Media Technology Building at MIT, the subject of this study, contains some good examples of the prevailing dilemma. The transformation of the Wiesner will be a critique of the existing building as well as the baseline for testing the assumption that the expression of our technological capabilities in our buildings can reunite us with ourselves and the world around us. Proposal: The objective is to maintain a mapping between alternative ways of addressing the existing building's systems and human perceptions of touch, smell, sight and sound As the author's intention is not to resolve the building as a whole, the proposals made for specific components of the building posit a series of questions which form the foundation for something which transcends the thesis. It is a critical way of approaching the often time intuitive making of architecture. This is merely the beginning of an inquiry which is ongoing and will extend into professional practice.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Construction Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2015.
Urbanisation and globalisation are the foremost trends propelling the growth and development of cities and towns in the world today. The Cape Town central business district is an example of an urban centre that is required to deal with rapid urbanisation. The increasing number of inner-city developments evoked the congested construction sites and are rapidly becoming the norm within the industry. Innovative building production management is crucial in driving productivity which includes reducing cost at all stages, from planning to completion. However, from several literatures, construction firms are not significantly proactive towards innovative technology that could enhance the efficient delivery of building production. The improved building production management is advancing at a slow pace both in South Africa and internationally. Hence, this research analyse the strategies that could significantly enhance current building production processes and establish the effective management systems that could enhance efficient building production in the urban centres. Innovative methods of stimulating building production processes are needed to ensure that building projects are completed within timeframes and budgets. The research method is both quantitative and qualitative using surveys for data collection. This type of research aims to record an accurate and adequate description of the problem statement and the sub-question. Data for the study are collected through observations, semi-structured and unstructured qualitative interviews and quantitative close-ended questionnaires administered to construction stakeholders working in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. This research focuses on the City of Cape Town to gain an understanding of the dynamics of innovation in building production processes within the building industry. The population of this research include building project managers, registered contractors as well as consultants. Quantitative data obtained from the structured questionnaire design was analysed with descriptive statistics, Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software 21 and content analysis are used to analyse the qualitative data obtained through interviewees.

From the historical context experienced by the construction industry recently, it is noted that the introduction of technological innovation in the production means has many benefits in the sector. In general terms, innovations contribute to rationalization of procedures, increasing the products to meet the new demands and transposition the technological frontier. However, it is found that persists the necessity of more information about innovations. Despite the benefits that come with the use of innovations, it is clear that its use by companies could be more disseminated and improved. It is starting from the relevance of the use of innovations in the construction industry and the need to provide more information related to innovation to sector companies, the present study aims to draw up a catalog of technological innovations. However, preliminarily it is necessary an analysis of the kinds and classifications of innovations to draw an appropriate parameter for the cataloging and classification. To prepare the catalog, it was selected the technological innovations published between 2005 and 2015 in the TÃchne magazine's publications. The innovations were classified according to the building systems observance of NBR 15575:2013. Have been cataloged 164 innovations. One of the concerns was the search for a clear, didactic and updated catalog. Finally, it should be noted that the research is marked out by national and international literature on innovation, by theses and dissertations and the related publications in the TÃchne magazine

Abstract:
This dissertation explains the causes of national differences in markets for technology. Different national approaches to intellectual property protection and use, market openness and market scope are the result of the process of creating technology standards in different countries. Technology Standards, in turn, are the product of two causal variables: the historically determined institutions of standardization - particularly the role of the state in the standardization process, and the position of a country in the fragmented global production system. The institutions of standardization determine the relative influence of different actors over standardization and market position. The position within the global economy determines these actors’ perspectives on intellectual property and market scope. Using case studies of standardization and technology market creation in the United States, Europe and China, this dissertation reveals the mechanisms by which these two variables give rise to national differences in technology markets.

Cohen, David H. "The adoption of innovative wood processing technologies in the building products industry." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/54508.

Abstract:
The strategic importance of the adoption of innovative processing technologies was analyzed for building products businesses. This study examined the two components of wood building products businesses: the structural panel industry and the softwood Iumber industry. To ensure that the relevance of adopting of innovative processing technologies was examined within an accurate contextual environment, additional important strategies and performance were also measured. A mail survey of the seventy-five largest North American producers of these two products provided the primary data necessary to investigate the strategic importance of process technology adoption, forward vertical integration, relative market share, grade sector focus, and investment intensity on firm performance as measured by profitability surrogates and changes in relative market share. This survey collected direct measures of the proportion of 1987 production produced by respondent firms that used controlled distribution channels and each of twentythree processes indicative of innovative technologies in the manufacture of building products. Information concerning the other strategic and performance factors was collected from secondary data sources. Results indicate that the adoption of innovative processing technologies has a positive impact on firm profitability. Investment intensity and grade sector focus also contributed to superior profitability. Forward vertical integration, and relative market share had no impact in differences between performance levels for the firms studied. Technologies were examined for underlying dimensions that group different process technologies together. Firms were clustered according to their level of adoption of innovative processing technologies and these clusters were then described according to a variety of firm-dependent characteristics, strategies, and performance measures. A strategy-performance model was developed for standardized, industrial product-markets and empirically tested using the data collected for the building products industry as an industry representative of this type of competitive environment.

Morselli, Thomas. "Thermochromic coatings for buildings: Preparation and assessment of potential energy savings." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2020. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/21103/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cool coatings show high solar reflectance and thermal emittance and have proved to decrease the energy consumption of buildings by reducing solar heat gains. However, previous studies have demonstrated how the effect of cool coatings is limited or counterproductive during cold seasons when free solar heat gains are reflected away too. Thermochromic pigments, with their ability to change their solar reflectance at different temperatures, could reduce the heating penalties during winter while keeping the benefits of lowering the cooling demand during summer. In this work, four different thermochromic pigments have been used to create basic building paints, and their solar reflectance, thermal emissivity, and the SRI have been evaluated. A significant change of the reflectance of the four paints was registered in the visible range, with a maximum variation of 0.37. The near-infrared reflectance was high during both colored and colorless phases; therefore, a high solar reflectance was registered even in the colored phase. To evaluate the potential energy benefits of thermochromic paints, an office building in downtown Toronto (Ontario) and the surrounding area have been modeled in Energy Plus. Four scenarios have been simulated with conventional, cool, and thermochromic coatings applied on the roof and facades of the building. Thermochromic paints have provided an 8.9% decrease in the cooling demand while limiting the heating penalties to 1.7%, compared to the 2.6% resulted using cool coatings. Despite the limited heating penalties, the overall annual energy demand of the case study building was similar, as the prolonged and severe winter of Toronto nullifies the benefits obtained during the cooling period. Similar results were obtained when the inter-building effects were taken into account. However, the evaluation of the climate change impact evaluated using a future weather file proved the beneficial effect of thermochromic paints in a more temperate climate.

Shakya, Indira. "Technological capability building : a case study of the mini-micro-hydro turbine manufacturers in Nepal." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 1999. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=21241.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal objectives of this thesis are to assess the value to Nepal of developing the use of mini-micro-hydro as a modern energy source in the rural areas and, at the same time, of promoting the domestic manufacture of mini-micro-hydro turbines and associated equipment as a means of creating a modern engineering sector within the country. Development of the mini-micro-hydro sector is viewed as a possible solution to two of the country's urgent economic problems. A sustainable and efficient means must be found of supplying the energy needs of areas remote from the national grid and, at the same time, it is important for the country to develop a nucleus of modern engineering capability in capital goods manufacture: the existence of a capital goods sector is widely understood to be a necessary condition of technological progress and a key to the achievement of on-going economic growth. This study investigates the potential of mini-micro-hydro development as a means of providing complementary solutions to these two problems. Mini-micro-hydro plants installed in the rural areas generate energy in an environmentally-friendly manner, but what, it may be asked, are the returns in commercial and in social terms on such installations? The manufacture of mini-micro-hydro equipment is already being undertaken in Nepal: does this activity offer the prospect of technology transfer and the development of enhanced technological capability? A third, subordinate, objective of the study is to determine whether, if a case is made for promoting the installation and manufacture of mini-micro-hydro units, the stance of the government, and of other institutions, is as helpful as it could be to achieving these ends. The conclusions of the study - from investigation of mini-micro-hydro operations in rural areas, and from examination of the technological capabilities developed by the turbine manufacturing firms - are that a positive case can indeed be made for encouraging in Nepal both the use of mini-micro-hydro units and their manufacture. It would however appear that certain changes in government policy and more active involvement by research institutions would be of assistance for the advancement of the mini-micro-hydro sector.

This thesis explores how technological transitions can be better implemented in society, to help achieve sustainability goals. The focus is specifically on technologies that may imply a paradigm shift, which is a change in existing practices or norms. To overcome potential barriers to market and societal penetration, government has traditionally initiated regulations and economic incentives to help diffuse the technology. However, a major impediment to technological shifts is the lack of effective interaction among the relevant institutions and other stakeholders. Through case study examples, it is argued that effective interaction for technological transitions can best be achieved through the use of consensus building strategies which can help promote legitimacy, development of institutional relationships, and learning. In recognition of this, an additional strategy is proposed for government - creating a forum for effective interaction to test or experiment with new sustainable technologies.

Alfarra, Hasan. "Architectural integration of transpired solar thermal technology in building envelopes and associated technological innovation analysis." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/65914/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the architectural integration of transpired solar collectors (TSC), as a building envelope technology patented in 1980s to pre-heat ambient air that would be used for space heating. It explores the reasons for low take up of the technology. It further explores the preferences, perceptions and recommendations of architectural integration quality of TSC in buildings. The research analyses the associated technological innovation development at entrepreneurial level in the UK and North America in a variety of terms including knowledge diffusion and research and development. Building-integrated renewable energy is an important response to concerns about climate change and energy poverty. As space heating accounts for 61% of total domestic energy consumption in countries with long cold seasons, the transpired solar collector (TSC) is a promising technology. However, TSC suffers from low take up despite its apparent technical competitiveness. A large-scale questionnaire, an experimental prototype and technological innovation system analysis were used to provide insight into architecturally integrating and developing TSC technology in buildings, and clarifying its potential contribution to pre-heating ambient air. The research outcomes inferred multi-dimensional reasons behind limited adoption of the technology. Respondents were generally aware of TSC technology; however, few were satisfied with available technology. Various preferences determining selection of TSCs were investigated, including: ‘invisible’ integration, planning guidelines for traditional buildings, stage of integration and sustainable factors. Respondents indicated that the ultimate feature considered when sourcing TSC technology was its reliability followed by capital cost. The solar irradiation only needed to exceed 60W/m2 for TSC to generate an output temperature greater than the ambient temperature. A significant temperature increase was observed when solar irradiation exceeded 400W/m2. Output temperature increased to 16ºC above ambient temperature in autumn and 12ºC in winter in the TSC prototype. A comparison of relevant actors, institutions and networks of TSC in the United Kingdom (UK) with North America, found both to be cautious about communication to protect intellectual property: this hampers knowledge exchange and development. Despite TSC take up in North America being restricted by cheap gas prices, end-user feedback reflects a level of satisfaction versus fewer such examples in the UK. Identified barriers included immaturity of technology, reluctance to implement new technology, lack of supply chain and low institutional support. A framework of potential enablers and architectural design guidelines were proposed to breakthrough take up of TSC.

Svensson, Klas, and Jonas Wallenskog. "Low Temperature Waste Heat Solutions : with proposals for energy technological actions based on Scania’s building 64." Thesis, Linköping University, Linköping University, Energy Systems, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-28211.

Full text
Abstract:

The report comprises two separate parts:

  • part 1:  Temperature needs for district heating in the paint shop for axles in building 210
  • part 2:  Energy and low temperature waste heat solutions in heating and cooling systems for   building 64 with surroundings

The paint shop for axles in part 1 has air quality requirements in places for coating of axles. Toachieve desired air properties there are different process ventilation systems, which consist ofventilation coils for heating and cooling, plus air humidifier. The ventilations coils for heating usedistrict heating. Today the ventilation coils use water of 100°C to achieve necessary air demands inthe coating boxes. This part of the report investigates whether the existing system would achievethe air requirements with a water temperature of 75°C instead of 100°C in the ventilation coilsduring the coldest parts of the year. The conclusion is that it is not possible; the existing system isadjusted for a water temperature of 100°C to achieve the air requirements. To use a watertemperature of 75°C, more or major ventilation coils are needed.

The focus of the report is at part 2. In this part, possibilities for low temperature waste heatsolutions are investigated. Those partly aim at specific local solutions for building 64 withsurroundings and on the other part of general waste heat solutions for new buildings andreconstructions in the future. To make these parts possible, the systems for heating and cooling inbuilding 64 have been identified. During this identification, potential savings that are not of wasteheat character have also been observed.

The most profitable saving concerns the control of temperature for the inner hardening vat. It isthe hardening vat for gas carburizing oven SV16838 that has been studied in this report. Today thetemperature of the hardening vat is controlled very ineffective. The conclusion is that a betteradjustment of the controller would save 180 000 SEK/year with a pay off time around two months.Worth mentioning (SV16838 included), is that there are at least five similar gas carburizing ovens atthe Scania area in Södertälje.

A pinch analysis has also been done for building 64, with it’s primarily conclusion that the groundheating is violating the pinch rules during long periods of the year. To remedy the ground heatingwill only need a different control and will lead to a saving between 20 000 – 75 000 SEK/year. Tomore accurate determine the saving, an investigation of the ground heating during winter time isneeded. Another conclusion concerning the pinch analysis is that the method for a real scenariorather shows the potential of the system than gives you an optimal solution possible to implement.More actions are to use the exhaustions of the endo gas generators and that the washing andrinsing systems if possible not should be heated with electricity. The exhaustions from the endo gasgenerators have a very high temperature, more then 300°C. If these, instead of hot water boilers, could warm the closely located water for the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) evaporation, 125 000SEK/year can be saved. Today the hot water boilers are heated with electricity. If the washing andrinsing systems existing electricity heating instead can be heated with secondary heat (˜ districtheating), a save of 500 000 SEK/year is possible.

For waste heat solutions there are a few different approaches. Close to building 64, the largestpotential to use waste heat is in building 62 and 75, where air heaters are assessed with the largestpotential. In difference to other investigated buildings, building 210 has the possibility to use wasteheat even during the summer. This building is located 1 km from building 64. To use waste water inbuilding 210, a complex net of waste heating will be required where several buildings with asurplus of waste heat can be connected. A net like this has calculated pipe costs of 5, 2 million SEK.The saving for the use of waste heat only in building 210 will be around 1,4 million SEK/year. Thissave corresponds to the air handling systems that occur in part 1.

Bulunuz, Nermin. "Understanding of Earth and Space Science Concepts: Strategies for Concept Building in Elementary Teacher Preparation." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2007. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/ece_diss/2.

Full text
Abstract:
Research on conceptual change provides strong evidence that not only children but also many adults have incorrect or incomplete understanding of science concepts. This mixed methods study was concerned with preservice and inservice teachers’ understanding of six earth and space science concepts commonly taught in elementary school: reasons for seasons, phases of the moon, reasons for the wind, the rock cycle, soil formation, and earthquakes. The first part of the study determined and compared the level of conceptual understanding held by both groups on topics they will need to teach in the Georgia Performance Standards [GPS]. The second part focused on whether readings or hands-on learning stations, in some cases combined with concept mapping, improves preservice teachers’ understanding of these concepts. The third part described the application of conceptual change strategies of one group of preservice teachers during their field placements. The overall sample was two cohorts of preservice teachers, one cohort of preservice teachers from an alternative initial certification program, and two masters’ cohorts consisting of inservice teachers. Four data sources were: a six item open-ended survey, concept maps, the field assignments, and the researcher’s field notes. Rubrics were used to score answers to each survey question. Concept map scores were calculated based on the criteria developed by Novak and Gowin (1984). The first part of the study shows that both preservice and inservice teachers have low conceptual understanding of the earth science concepts taught in elementary school. Independent samples t-tests results indicate that both groups have similar understanding about these concepts. A two way ANOVA with repeated measures analysis demonstrated that readings and learning stations are both successful in building preservice teacher’s understanding and that benefits from the hands-on learning stations approached statistical significance. A paired samples t-test shows that concept mapping added to the participants’ conceptual understanding whether the participants learned the concepts through readings or stations. Finally, field assignments allowed the participants to apply knowledge that they learned in their science methods course in their classroom placements. This study has implications for teacher preparation programs, staff development, and conceptual change practices in field placements.

Abstract:
The piperidine moiety is found in a vast number of bioactive natural products as well as numerous marketed drugs and is therefore an interesting target for synthetic modi cations. Synthetic piperidines currently in the clinic are predominantly limited to 1,4-disubstitution on the piperidine ring, hence it is important to develop strategies to access new drug candidates with diverse substitution con gurations on the ring. For this purpose, the aza-Michael reaction can be used as an atom-ecient method to access biologically important piperidines. An initial study into the utility of divinyl ketone as the substrate for a double aza- Michael addition has led to the development of a facile, manganese dioxide mediated, one-pot oxidation-cyclisation method for the preparation of a diverse range of N- substituted 4-piperidones in moderate to good yield over two steps. Substituted divinyl ketones were prepared from their corresponding alcohols and used in a subsequent aza- Michael cyclisation with benzylamine for the synthesis of racemic, aromatically and aliphatically 2-substituted N-benzylic 4-piperidones. Employing S- -phenylethylamine as the primary amine substrate in this protocol a orded separable, diastereomeric 4- piperidone products with resolved stereochemistry in position 2 on the piperidine ring. The suitability of such 2-substituted 4-piperidones for the synthesis of biologically relevant compounds was demonstrated by employing these building blocks in the synthesis of analogues of the acetylcholinesterase inhibiting drug donepezil. Access to the important 4-formyl piperidines was accomplished through a concise and high yielding route via a Wittig reaction followed by acidic hydrolysis to the desired aldehydes. Further synthetic steps a orded the nal donepezil analogues as inseparable diastereomeric mixtures with resolved stereochemistry in position two on the piperidine ring. Evaluating the acetylcholinesterase inhibiting potency of these analogues compared to donepezil provided information about the sensitivity of donepezil's piperidine moiety towards stereoselective substitution in position two on the ring. A detailed investigation of the manganese dioxide mediated side reaction, which is observed in the one-pot oxidation-cyclisation reaction, led to the nding that under the same reaction conditions the oxidation of primary benzylic amines proceeds smoothly to the corresponding amides. The interconversion of all intermediates in this process was demonstrated experimentally and the vital role of both manganese dioxide and the molecular sieves explored. A range of benzylic amides was prepared in good to excellent yield using the developed methodology.

Abstract:
The study analyses the role of various internal and external factors (of firms) in technological capability building (TCB) in the food industry of Thailand, by viewing two main aspects of TCB: first, four main elements of technological capabilities (i. e. acquisitive, operative, adaptive and innovative); and secondly, the capability of developing new products. A review of the relevant literature demonstrates that various internal and external factors can influence the success or failure of technological capability building of the firm. The internal factors include size of firm, role of the entrepreneur, firm's policy and strategy, management and administration, accumulation of firm's own experience, manpower flow and internal links, firm's own effort in R&D, and human resource development. The external factors include competitive environment, role of government and related institutions, customers, competitors, foreign direct investment, and cooperation with external agencies. Dat a collected from a sample of 62 firms have been closely studied. To start with regression analyses have been undertaken. At a second stage, a perception analysis was used to identify the relative importance of the various factors, as perceived by the firms, influencing the enhancement of the four elements of technological capability. However, for viewing firm-level capability building for developing new products, we have also used a qualitative analysis in the form of a 'pair comparison' review. Although for operative and adaptive capabilities the regression analyses carried out do not show that any of the factors identified have statistically significant relationship, for acquisitive and innovative capability building statistically significant relationships are observed against ownership and promotion status (and in the case of innovative capability, firm size and market orientation as well). However, on the basis of the perception analysis carried out some overseas customers andoverseas market competitors emerge as dominant ones. In the case of firm-level capability building for developing new products, the regression analysis reveals that only firm-size has statistically significant relationship, while the 'pair comparison' analysis shows that various factors including top management values, policy and strategy, management and administration, R&D efforts, internal linkage and information system, the sufficient fund for undertaking R&D and human resource training, and the motivation and the reward system are dominant ones.

The United States Pacific Command (PACOM) area of responsibility (AOR) includes 36 Asia-Pacific countries and over 100 million square miles of Earths surface. Five of the countries in the PACOM are historically most often hit by natural disasters and require immediate response with effective coordination. In order to provide the most effective disaster-relief efforts, identification of the organizations that are available and the capabilities that they can provide is essential. This research identifies and analyzes 27 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that currently or recently conducted relief projects in the PACOM AOR. We primarily analyzed the organizations using six factors: (1) mission or primary focus, (2) capabilities, (3) budget, (4) training, (5) religious affiliation, and (6) liaison with military. We also analyzed the financial status of the NGOs for a better understanding. The end result of the research is to provide PACOM leadership with in-depth analysis of the most effective organizations that can assist in disaster relief preparation and the efficient coordination of resources and can minimize redundancy of efforts after a catastrophic event.

Abstract:
The manufacture of photovoltaic (PV) system components has a role to play in the industrialisation and poverty reduction strategies of developing countries. It has also been suggested that small scale local manufacture of balance of systems components has the potential to improve the maintenance, installation and use of the technology. However, PV is a complex technology and most developing countries have not been able to build the capabilities required to manufacture PV system components of an appropriate quality and price, either in the modern or small scale sectors. The factors that determine the success of PV manufacturers in developing countries are therefore of interest. Previous studies on learning in the PV industry have been focused on industry-wide concerns and have not explicitly addressed enterprise-level capability building or challenges specific to developing countries. In particular, there has been very little published about small scale PV manufacture. This thesis therefore aims to improve understanding of the factors that influence capability building, with a view to assisting decision making in relation to PV manufacture in developing countries. The aims of the study have been fulfilled by the development and assessment of a software simulation training tool for PV cell production line engineers, the development of an analysis framework, and application of it to several case study PV enterprises. Through the application of the framework to the case studies, it has been possible to assess the role of software simulations, the suitability of countries with different types of infrastructure for hosting PV manufacturing and the institutional arrangements or interventions that could be used to promote capability building for PV manufacturers in developing countries. While further case studies are required to make more than tentative conclusions, the framework developed and tested in this thesis may now be used as a tool to systematically and rapidly analyse the appropriateness of different types of PV manufacture in particular countries, to identify the weaknesses in their PV technological systems and therefore to suggest where resources should be invested and where appropriate institutional changes could be made. The simulation software has been demonstrated to be an effective capability building tool, thus providing one of the key elements required for successful manufacturing.

Gazis, Evangelos. "Development and diffusion of building-integrated photovoltaics : analysing innovation dynamics in multi-sectoral technologies." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/15742.

Full text
Abstract:
The ongoing transformation of the energy system along a more sustainable trajectory requires advancements in a range of technological fields, as well as active involvement of different societal groups. Integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems in the built environment in particular is expected to play a crucial long-term role in the deployment of renewable energy technologies in urban areas, demanding the successful cooperation of planners, architects, engineers, scientists and users. The realisation of that technological change will require innovation at both an individual (within firms and organisations) and a collective (sector) level, giving rise to systemic approaches for its characterisation and analysis of its drivers. This study investigates the processes that either accelerate or hinder the development and diffusion of Building-Integrated PV (BIPV) applications into the market. Affected by developments in both the renewable energy and construction industries, the BIPV innovation system is a multi-sectoral case that has been explored only partially up to now. Acknowledging the fact that drivers of innovation span the globalised BIPV supply chain, this research adopts both an international and a national spatial perspective focusing on the UK. The analysis is based on a novel analytical framework which was developed in order to capture innovation dynamics at different levels, including technological advancements within firms, competition and synergy with other emerging and established innovation systems and pressures from the wider socio-economic configuration. This hybrid functional framework was conceived by combining elements from three academic strands: Technological Innovation Systems, the Multi-Level Perspective and Business Studies. The empirical research is based on various methods, including desktop research, semi-structured interviews and in-depth firm-level case studies. A thorough market assessment provides the techno-economic background for the research. The hybrid framework is used as a guide throughout the empirical investigation and is also implemented in the analytical part of the study to organise and interpret the findings, in order to assess the overall functionality of the innovation system. The analysis has underlined a range of processes that affect the development and diffusion of BIPV applications including inherent technological characteristics, societal factors and wider transitions within the energy and construction sectors. Future approaches for the assessment and governance of BIPV innovation will need to address its hybrid character and disruptiveness with regards to incumbent configurations, in order to appreciate its significance over the short and long term. Methodological and conceptual findings show that the combination of insights from different analytical perspectives offers a broader understanding of the processes affecting innovation dynamics in emerging technologies. Different approaches can be used in tandem to overcome methodological weaknesses, provide different analytical perspectives and assess the performance of complex innovation systems, which may span multiple countries and sectors. By better reflecting complexities, tensions and synergies, the framework developed here offers a promising way forward for the analysis of emerging sustainable technologies.
