Abstract:
Bulama (otherwise Bolama) Island is the furthest inshore member of the Bissagos Islands, off the West African coast, in the present-day state of Guiné-Bissau. On the east side of the wide estuary of Rio Jeba, it stands near the mouth of Rio Balola. Small, low-lying, partly surrounded by sandbanks and swamps, often uninhabited, and considered by whites scenically attractive but very unhealthy, Bulama has appeared in historical records with disproportionate frequency. It may have been noted during the earliest stages of Portuguese “Discovery;” two centuries on, it was investigated by the French. It was later the locality of a disastrous British settlement, the proposed home for a colony of African-Americans, and for sixty years the site of a colonial capital; and it was the subject of a well-meant arbitration by a President of the U.S.A. Finally, it was the center for an international conference on its own past, held in 1990. That past, of little importance in itself, nevertheless provides a keyhole glimpse of much of the history of the western Guinea coast over four centuries.Our knowledge of the earlier history of the island of Bulama is slight and depends on European sources. The region of the estuary of Rio Jeba—or “Rio Grande” as it was originally known—was first visited by Europeans in the 1450s. The earliest Portuguese ship to arrive was probably the one on which a certain Diogo Gomes traveled, the date probably 1456. The account of this voyage, as edited by a contemporary scholar in the 1490s from the oral narrative of Diogo Gomes in old age, indicates that the Portuguese landed at a point along Rio Jeba and saw wild animals: deer, elephants, and crocodiles.

Abstract:
Background: The global eradication of polio is considered an emergency and an unaccomplished task until completely eliminated. Vaccinating children against the polio virus confers immunity on them and breaks the transmission of the polio virus. Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan remain the only three countries in the world that have not eliminated polio. The aims of this paper were to: (1) to identify the factors that impact the failure to eliminate polio from Nigeria and (2) determine the factors that led to the successful elimination of polio from India. Methodology: A systematic literature review was carried out to meet the above research objectives. Methods: Four electronic databases were searched (Cochrane Library, Medline, PubMed and Google Scholar) and articles that fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and critically appraised. Results: In all, 98 articles were retrieved. After selection based on our selection criteria, fourteen studies were identified and included in the study. These were 5 systematic reviews: 3 cross-sectional studies, 3 mixed methods studies, 2 case-control studies and one quantitative (survey) study. In all, seven themes were identified from the review of the articles. Four themes were identified from the factors associated with the failure to eliminate polio from Nigeria: (1) Failure of the oral polio vaccine (OPV); (2) Institutional and geographical failures in vaccine programs; (3) Program and campaign management limitations; and (4) Vaccine refusal. Similarly, three themes were identified from the factors that contributed to the elimination of polio from India: (1) Replacement of the trivalent OPV with the monovalent and bivalent OPVs; (2) Implementation of intensive social mobilization strategies; and (3) Effective program micro planning and campaign management. Conclusion: Based on the findings from the literature review, we highlight areas where Nigeria can learn from India in its quest to eliminate polio. These factors can form the basis for future theoretical and policy reforms in the fight against polio not only in Nigeria but in countries where it remains endemic. Further research should compare the success of polio eradication in other countries. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran mengenai faktor-faktor penghambat pelaksanaan gerakan pembangunan desa melalui program infrastruktur di Desa Bulalu Kecamatan Kwandang Kabupaten Gorontalo Utara. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah jenis penelitian deskripsi kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara dan dokuemntasi. Wawancara dilakukan kepada sejumlah informan yang telah ditentukan yaitu yang memiliki kompetensi yang berkaitan dengan tujuan penelitian. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan, bahwa Perencanaan Kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh Pemerintah Desa belum maksimal dilaksanakan sebagaimana mestinya karena tidak melibatkan masyarakat miskin dalam menentukan skala prioritas usulan yang akan dikerjakan; Sumber Daya Manusia (SDM) dan keahlian yang dimiliki oleh Tim Pelaksana Kegiatan Desa (TPKD) belum memenuhi syarat menjadi pelaksana kegiatan Desa; Pemanfaatan Sumber daya alam (SDA) serta pemanfaatan tenaga kerja lokal oleh pemerintah desa dalam pembangunan infrastruktur berupa pembangunan jalan belum dilaksanakan. Berdasarkan uraian maka disarankan Pemerintah Desa Bulalo Kecamatan Kwadang: perlu melibatkan masyarakat miskin dalam hal penentuan skala prioritas usulan yang akan dilakukan; perlu melibatkan masyarakat yang memiliki Sumber daya manusia (SDM) dan keahlian khusus untuk menjadi Tim Pelaksana Kegiatan Desa (TPKD) sehingga Pembangunan Desa bisa mencapai target yang telah ditentukan; Pemerintah Desa Bulalo harus memanfaatkan potensi sumber daya alam (SDA) yang ada di Desa itu sendiri, yaitu melibatkan tenaga kerja lokal dalam pelaksanaan pekerjaan infrastruktur di Desa, sehingga selain masyarakat mendapatkan penghasilan dari pekerjaan tersebut juga melancarkan progres kegiatan pekerjaan sesuai dengan target yang telah ditentukan; Pemerintah Daerah Kabupaten Gorontalo Utara perlu melakukan pemantauan dan pengawasan semua tahapan pelaksanaan kegiatan pembangunan yang ada di Desa Bulalo Kecamatan Kwandang Kabupaten Gorontalo Utara. Abstract:
Bu çalışmanın amacı, haklarında denetimli serbestlik tedbiri uygulanan bireylerin iş bulma kaygılarının kendilerini sıkışmış hissetmeleri üzerine etkisini araştırmaktır. Araştırmanın katılımcılarını Isparta Denetimli Serbestlik Müdürlüğü’nün takip ettiği 234 kişi oluşturmaktadır. Veriler, iş bulma kaygısı ve sıkışmışlık hissi ölçekleriyle yüz yüze görüşülerek toplanmıştır. Yapılan istatistik analizleri neticesinde, iş bulma kaygısının sıkışmışlık hissi üzerine etkisinin istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bununla birlikte, ölçeklerin boyutları ile yapılan analiz sonuçlarına göre, iş bulma kaygısının çevresel ve sosyal baskı boyutunun içsel ve dışsal faktörlere bağlı sıkışmışlık hissi üzerine etkisinin pozitif ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olduğu, diğer boyutlar arasında anlamlı ilişki ve etkilerin bulunmadığı anlaşılmıştır. Bu sonuçlara göre, denetimli serbestlik tedbiri uygulanan bireylerin iş bulma kaygısı taşıdıkları, bu kaygının daha çok çevresel ve sosyal baskıdan kaynaklandığı; bu kaygının ise bireylerin sıkışmışlık hissini artıran bir etkisinin olduğu belirlenmiştir.

Bu araştırmada meslek yüksekokulu öğrencilerinin iş bulma kaygıları, girişimcilik özellikleri ve genel not ortalamaları arasındaki ilişkiler araştırılmıştır. İlişkisel tarama yöntemine göre yürütülen bu araştırmanın verileri iş bulma kaygıları ve üniversite öğrencilerine yönelik girişimcilik ölçeklerinin uygulanması ile elde edilmiştir. Araştırmanın örneklemi kolay örnekleme yoluyla Afyon Kocatepe Üniversitesi Afyon Meslek Yüksekokulundan seçilen 385 üniversite öğrencisidir. Araştırmada sonucunda iş bulma kaygılarının girişimcilik puanları ile anlamlı, negatif yönlü ve zayıf bir ilişki içinde olduğu görülmüştür. Araştırmada bu ilişkiyi daha iyi yorumlayabilmek için yapılan regresyon analizi sonucunda iş bulma kaygılarının girişimcilik puanlarına ait varyansın yaklaşık olarak yüzde birlik kısmını açıkladığı görülmüştür. Ayrıca iş bulma kaygıları artıkça girişimcilik özellikleri eksi yönde etkilenmekte yani düşmektedir. Fakat yapılan analiz sonucunda cinsiyet, sınıf ve yaş değişkenlerine yönelik bir aracılık etkisinden söz edilememektedir. Öğrencilerin iş bulma kaygılarının yüksekliği önemli bir sorundur. Bu kaygı yalnızca ekonomik boyutları olan bir sorun değildir. Sosyal ve toplumsal olarak da olumsuz sonuçlar doğuracaktır. Bu nedenle de örgün eğitimden iş hayatına geçişteki sorunların azaltılması ve bu geçişin kolaylaştırılması gerekmektedir. Genç istihdamını artıran yasal düzenlemelerin yapılması, genç girişimcilerin desteklenmesi ve bu girişimcileri destekleyen kurum ve kuruluşların artırılması ve topluma tanıtılması gerekmektedir.

Türkçede ‘kovmak’ amacıyla kullanımı 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren metinlerle tanıklanabilen siktir kelimesiyle ilgili açıklığa kavuşturulması gereken birkaç konu vardır. Bunlardan ilki kelimenin kökeniyle ilgilidir. Türkçenin mevcut köken bilgisi sözlüklerinde kelimenin kökeniyle ilgili bir açıklama bulunamamaktadır. Argo sözlükleri de bu konuda bir açıklama içermez. Kelimeyi madde olarak alan belli başlı (güncel/genel) Türkçe sözlüklerin sadece biri (ÖTS) kökenle ilgili okuyucuyu doğrudan sik- biçimine yönlendirirken diğerleri de kelimenin alfabetik sıralamadaki yeri nedeniyle aynı yönlendirmeyi örtülü olarak yaparlar. Kelimenin ‘kaba’ kullanımı ve bugünkü ses yapısı ise bu yönlendirmeyi sorgulamaya engel olmaktadır. Kelimenin köken olarak sek-’e bağlanması bu yazının sonuçlarından biridir. Bu bağlama işlemi için sek- ve türevi olan biçimlerin Türk dilinin tarihi ve çağdaş diyalektlerindeki, ihtiyacı karşılayan örneklerine başvurulmuştur. Bu doğrultuda sek- kökeniyle temsil olunan temel anlamın ‘(sekerek) kaçmak, (sekerek) koşmak, topallamak’ yan anlamları üzerinden mecazlaşması ve sonunda sik- kelimesinin anlam olarak sek-’e bulaşmasıyla sonuçlanan sürece dikkat çekilmiştir. Açıklığa kavuşturulması gereken bir diğer konu siktir kelimesinin madde olarak sözlükte nasıl kullanılması gerektiğiyle ilgilidir. Kelimenin sözlüklerde sadece isim, sadece fiil veya hem isim hem fiil olarak madde başı yapıldığı tespit edilmiştir. Aslında bir fiil iken donarak anlam unsuru olarak da kullanılır hale gelen kelimenin hem fiil (siktirip gitmek) hem de isim olarak (siktir et-, siktir çek- vb.) sözlükte madde başı yapılmasının gerekliliği bu yazıda vurgulanmıştır.

Abstract:
Bu araştırmanın amacı, spor yükseköğretim kurumu öğrencilerinde uzaktan eğitime yönelik tutum ile iş bulma kaygısının bazı değişkenlere göre incelenmesidir. Çalışmada, betimsel nitelikte ilişkisel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubu, Gümüşhane Üniversite Beden Eğitimi ve Spor Yüksekokulu’nda 2021-2022 eğitim öğretim yılında öğrenim gören 138 kadın 176 erkek olmak üzere 314 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Veri toplama aşamasında ‘‘Salgın Döneminde Uygulanan Uzaktan Eğitime Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği’’, ‘‘Spor Bilimleri Öğrencilerinin İş Bulma Kaygısı Ölçeği’’ ve kişisel bilgi formu kullanılmıştır. Analiz aşamasında; verilerin normal dağılım gösterdiği tespit edilerek, ikili karşılaştırmalarda Bağımsız Örneklem T-Testi; üç ve daha fazla grup kıyaslamalarında ise Tek Yönlü Varyans Analizi (ANOVA) testi uygulanmıştır. Üniversite öğrencilerinin uzaktan eğitime tutumları ile iş bulma kaygıları arasındaki ilişki ise Pearson’s korelasyon katsayısı ile belirlenmiştir. Analiz sonucunda, uzaktan eğitime yönelik tutum ölçeğinde katılımcıların; cinsiyet, yaş ve anne eğitim durumu değişkenine göre anlamlı fark tespit edilmemiştir. Baba eğitim durumuna göre uzaktan eğitimde öğretim üyelerine yönelik tutum alt boyut puanları arasında anlamlı farklılık saptanmıştır. Spor bilimleri öğrencilerinin iş bulma kaygısı ölçeğinde; yaş, bölüm, baba eğitim durumu ve anne eğitim durumu değişkenlerine göre anlamlı fark tespit edilmez iken, cinsiyet değişkeni göre anlamlı fark saptanmıştır. Korelasyon analizi sonucunda; iş bulma kaygısı ile uzaktan eğitime yönelik tutumları arasında anlamlı ilişki tespit edilmemiştir. Bulgular neticesinde spor bölümlerinde eğitim alan öğrencilerin, kariyer geliştirme seminer ve programlarına katılmalarının faydalı olabileceği düşünülmektedir.

Abstract:
Nesta dissertação, foi desenvolvida uma análise linguística contrastiva de bulas de medicamento brasileiras e alemãs. O principal objetivo dessa análise era identificar o grau de compreensibilidade de cada um dos textos, segundo as dimensões do modelo de Karlsruhe: Concisão, Correção, Motivação, Estrutura, Simplicidade e Perceptibilidade. Para isso, foram retomados conceitos da Linguística Textual e procedimentos da Textologia Contrastiva, como as definições de texto e gênero textual, o método de comparação de textos paralelos e o estabelecimento de um termo de comparação. De maneira geral, os resultados da análise contrastiva indicaram que termos técnicos (no âmbito da simplicidade) e fonte pequena (no âmbito da perceptibilidade) não são as principais causas de incompreensão na leitura das bulas, como se supôs inicialmente. O estudo evidenciou que desvios na estrutura e na concisão das bulas podem ter um impacto tão ou mais negativo na compreensão desses textos do que os aspectos anteriormente citados. Além disso, foi possível constatar que cada uma das dimensões possui um peso diferente na compreensibilidade das bulas analisadas devido a diferenças linguísticas e culturais entre os pares alemão/português e Alemanha/Brasil.
In this research, a contrastive linguistic analysis of German and Brazilian package inserts was developed. The main aim of this analysis was to identify the degree of comprehensibility in each text, according to the Karlsruhe model dimensions: concision, correctness, motivation, structure, simplicity and perceptibility. To achieve this aim, it was necessary to review some concepts of the Textual Linguistics and procedures of the Contrastive Textology, such as the definitions of text and textual genre, the method of comparing parallel texts and the establishment of a point of comparison. In general, the results of the contrastive analysis have shown that technical terms (in the scope of simplicity) and small font (perceptibility) are not the main causes of misunderstanding of package inserts, as it was supposed initially. The study has highlighted that deviances in the structure and in the concision of package inserts may have an impact in the comprehension of these texts as negative as the aspects forementioned, if not more. Moreover, it was possible to notice that each dimension has a different weight in the comprehensibility of the analyzed package inserts because of the linguistic and cultural differences between German/Portuguese and Germany/Brazil.

Abstract:
This study examines Okudzhava’s depiction of the process of documentalization of the past as a defining feature of the novel Puteshestvie diletantov, giving reason to consider it a form of metahistory, or an artistic statement on the subject of historical knowledge. The image of the document plays a central role in the novel Puteshestvie diletantov. Through it, Okudzhava depicts the process of knowing and (re)creating the past, as well as the process of its deformation, supplementation and modification. In the form of a document, the past finds existence in time and space, finds its author and addressee, and becomes submerged in a constantly changing context. Okudzhava does not contest the truth of the past, but rather problematizes it, immersing the reader in its real element – the narrative one, permeated by the creative will of the individual. Within this element, two juxtaposed narrative streams stand out clearly: the fictional and the documentary, each shaping the picture of the past in different ways. By thematicizing the issue of documents as evidence, Okudzhava at the same time thematicizes the influence of narrativity on the process of our recreation of past events, as well as on the course of these same events. The act of compiling a document and the act of narration appear in the novel as the driving force of the action and are treated by the author of Puteshestvie diletantov as a fully fledged manifestation of human will in History. In this way, the metafictionality of the novel (its thematicization and problematization of various narrative forms) becomes the key to its metahistoricality (the thematicization and problematization of knowledge of the past, the composition of History), inasmuch as History itself is represented here in the form of a narrative stream.

Abstract:
Current research on formal treatment approaches to normal-weight bulimia presents inconclusive results on the efficacy of various treatments and limited empirical knowledge of the curative mechanisms involved. In the literature on therapeutic change agent studies which interviews individuals who have recovered from an eating disorder, only isolated aspects of the recovery experience are uncovered so that the meaning and process of recovery are limited. This case study applied Colaizzi's (1978) existential-phenomenological approach to elucidate thematic categories underlying the recovery experience as recounted by a former bulimic in order to provide a more complete and holistic understanding of the process and nature of recovery from bulimia. Initially, four individuals who self-reported feeling genuinely recovered from bulimia were prescreened by an independent rater in order to ensure that they had a previous diagnosis of bulimia nervosa as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition Revised (1987) and no previous history of anorexia nervosa, that they were free of bulimic symptoms, and that they exhibited no significant indicators of other active psychological problems since having recovered from bulimia. The four co-researchers described their recovery experience and each interview was transcribed. Categorical themes were formulated from the richest and most comprehensive transcript and information from another co-researcher's transcript served to cross-validate the categories. The remaining two transcripts were not included in the analysis process. The co-researcher validated the thematic categories and their descriptions and also verified that the clustered categories clearly outlined the pattern or meaning of her recovery experience. Results showed that recovery involves a synergetic interaction of curative factors both inside and outside of formal therapy. Once the individual acknowledges her eating problem, her bulimic behaviours begin to decrease as she experiences an increasing sense of efficacy and self-respect in areas of her life other than her body weight and shape. Her bingeing and purging gradually diminish to the point where she no longer engages in them. Aside from an occasional lapse, she now implements other activities to deal with uncomfortable emotional states. She feels stronger in knowing who she is, she cherishes herself as she is, and she is eager to affirm her personal growth by sharing her experience with recovering bulimics. In addition to a more comprehensive theoretical understanding of recovery, this study provided a deepened appreciation of the complexity of the recovery process. It also underscored the need for a multifaceted and individualized treatment approach which is adjusted throughout the recovery process as the adaptive functions or meanings of clients' eating behaviours change.

Abstract:
This study used a qualitative/phenomenological research methodology to examine the perspective of five bulimic subjects about their lives in order to understand the bulimic individual's point of view and develop a clearer picture of the world of the bulimic. This approach involved three interviews for each of the five subjects totalling 22 1/2 hours. The three interviews dealt with the subjects' past and present experiences and their ideas about the future. The qualitative/phenomenological methodology created an in-depth view of each subject's relationship to the beginning of her bulimia and its subsequent development. During the period when the interviews were being transcribed, patterns and concepts emerged and were examined. Nine categories were developed from this data reflecting some of the characteristics of a bulimic's personality. Six research questions were formulated and then answered by evaluating them in the light of the nine categories as well as data and descriptions from the interviews. No one single category was found to be uniquely dominant, but rather the categories tended to appear in a cluster-like fashion depending on the individual personality of the bulimic. The data of this study revealed a distinction between the personality and the behavior of the bulimic. A form with a Likert-like response was developed by the researcher and given out to 11 raters in order to evaluate the presence or non-presence of the categories in selected passages. On the basis of the findings of this study, with its limited subject pool, certain recommendations are presented for the reader that might perhaps be of some use in understanding bulimia.

Abstract:
This study hypothesized body weight and eating patterns to be important discriminators of psychological characteristics among eating disordered groups. A total of 146 bulimic and non-bulimic women from underweight (anorexic), normal weight, and overweight (obese) categories were examined. Based upon the theoretical and research literature reviewed, this study hypothesized locus of control, personal potency, self-esteem, and psychopathology to be central psychological characteristics in anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and obesity. These variables were measured by Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, the Semantic Differential Potency Scale, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, respectively. The relative importance of these variables in the disorders was also addressed. Results showed women in the eating disordered groups examined to demonstrate the following psychological characteristics: (1) Non-bulimic anorexics--an external locus of control, low self-esteem, and hysteria; (2) Bulimic anorexics--the greatest external locus of control, the lowest self-esteem, psychopathic deviance, hysteria, thought disorder, depression, a preoccupation with somatic concerns, and hypofemininity; (3) Normal weight bulimics--an external locus of control, low self-esteem, psychopathic deviance, hysteria, thought disorder, and depression; (4) Non-bulimic obese--low self-esteem; and (5) Bulimic obese--low self-esteem, an external locus of control, thought disorder and depression. The primary conclusion drawn from this study is that bulimia is a better predictor of the psychological characteristics than body weight. Bulimia, across all weight categories, was associated with an external locus of control, low self-esteem, psychopathic deviance, hysteria, thought disorder, and depression. That there was little variability in personality characteristics associated with bulimia across weight categories emphasized the stability of the symptom constellation associated with this disorder. This study supported the view of the normal weight bulimic as psychologically similar to the bulimic anorexic. This study also supported the stance that simple obesity does not represent a unitary psychological disorder.

Nesse aspecto, a bula do medicamento pode auxiliar no esclarecimento quantoá enfermidade e tratamento do paciente. Entretanto, diversos estudos destacam problemas apresentados nas bulas de medicamentos. O presente estudo tem o objetivo de contribuir analisando o atual cenário das bulas de medicamentos no Brasil. Os resultados indicam que as bulas presentes na internet s ão pouco homogêneas e omitem eventos adversos. A análise efetuada em um par de bulas do site da ANVISA indica a existência de termos muito técnicos e algumas omissões.

Review question / Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to synthesize the scientific evidence that evaluates fatigue and fracture resistance, survival, and stress distribution, of composite resin CAD/CAM and ceramic CAD/CAM occlusal veneers in posterior teeth with severe occlusal wear. Condition being studied: Currently there is an increase in cases of dental wear, due to several factors such as: excessive consumption of carbonated drinks, a diet high in acids, gastric diseases, anorexia, bulimia, dental grinding, use of highly abrasive toothpastes, or a combination of these(9) (10) (11) (12); which affect the patient in several aspects: loss of vertical dimension, sensitivity due to the exposure of dentin, esthetics, affectation of the neuromuscular system(11) (13) (14). With the advent of minimally invasive dentistry, occlusal veneers have been found to be a valid option to rehabilitate this type of cases and thus avoid greater wear of the dental structure with full coverage restorations. Sometimes when performing a tabletop it is not necessary to perform any preparation, thus preserving the maximum amount of dental tissue(3) (6) (15). Due to the masticatory load either in patients without parafunction where the maximum masticatory force is approximately 424 N for women and 630 N for men or in those who present parafunction where the maximum bite force can vary from 780 to 1120N(7), it is necessary that the occlusal veneers support that load which makes indispensable a compilation of studies investigating both fatigue and fracture resistance and the survival rate of occlusal veneers in different materials and thicknesses.

The World Health Organization and World Bank (2011) estimate that there are more than 1 billion people with disabilities in the world. To address this population’s diverse needs, the United Nations drafted their Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2006. Article 24 (Education) of the CRPD requires ratifying countries to develop an inclusive education system to address the educational needs of students with disabilities alongside their peers without disabilities. Despite substantive improvements and movement toward inclusive education, many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) continue to struggle with accurately identifying and supporting students with disabilities, including knowing how to effectively screen, evaluate, and qualify students for additional services (Hayes, Dombrowski, Shefcyk, & Bulat, 2018a). These challenges stem from the lack of policies, practices, and qualified staff related to screening and identification. As a result, many students with less-apparent disabilities—such as children with learning disabilities—remain unidentified and do not receive the academic supports they need to succeed in school (Friend & Bursuck, 2012). This guide attempts to address the lack of appropriate, useful disability screening and identification systems and services as countries look to educate all students in inclusive settings. Specifically, this guide introduces viable options for screening and identification related to vision, hearing, and learning disabilities in inclusive classrooms in LMICs. It also provides guidance on how LMICs can transition from an assessment-center model toward a school-based identification model that better serves an inclusive education system.

The general objective of this BARD project focused on rationally designed insect neuropeptide (NP) agonists and antagonists, their application for the characterization of the mechanisms of action of the pyrokinin/PBAN (PK-PBAN) family and the development of biostable, bioavailable versions that can provide the basis for development of novel, environmentally-friendly pest insect control agents. The specific objectives of the study, as originally proposed, were to: (i) Test stimulatory potencies of rationally designed backbone cyclic (BBC) peptides on pheromonotropic, melanotropic, myotropic and pupariation activities; (ii) Test the inhibitory potencies of the BBC compounds on the above activities evoked either by synthetic peptides (PBAN, LPK, myotropin and pheromonotropin) or by the natural endogenous mechanism; (iii) Determine the bioavailability of the most potent BBC compounds that will be found in (ii); (iv) Design, synthesize and examine novel PK/PBAN analogs with enhanced bioavailability and receptor binding; (v) Design and synthesize ‘magic bullet’ analogs and examine their ability to selectively kill cells expressing the PK/PBAN receptor. To achieve these goals the agonistic and antagonistic activities/properties of rationally designed linear and BBC neuropeptide (NP) were thoroughly studied and the information obtained was further used for the design and synthesis of improved compounds toward the design of an insecticide prototype. The study revealed important information on the structure activity relationship (SAR) of agonistic/antagonistic peptides, including definitive identification of the orientation of the Pro residue as trans for agonist activity in 4 PK/PBANbioassays (pheromonotropic, pupariation, melanotropic, & hindgut contractile) and a PK-related CAP₂b bioassay (diuretic); indications that led to the identification of a novel scaffold to develop biostbiostable, bioavailable peptidomimetic PK/PBANagonists/antagonists. The work led to the development of an arsenal of PK/PBAN antagonists with a variety of selectivity profiles; whether between different PKbioassays, or within the same bioassay between different natural elicitors. Examples include selective and non-selective BBC and novel amphiphilic PK pheromonotropic and melanotropic antagonists some of which are capable of penetrating the moth cuticle in efficacious quantities. One of the latter analog group demonstrated unprecedented versatility in its ability to antagonize a broad spectrum of pheromonotropic elicitors. A novel, transPro mimetic motif was proposed & used to develop a strong, selective PK agonist of the melanotropic bioassay in moths. The first antagonist (pure) of PK-related CAP₂b diuresis in flies was developed using a cisPro mimetic motif; an indication that while a transPro orientation is associated with receptor agonism, a cisPro orientation is linked with an antagonist interaction. A novel, biostablePK analog, incorporating β-amino acids at key peptidase-susceptible sites, exhibited in vivo pheromonotropic activity that by far exceeded that of PBAN when applied topically. Direct analysis of neural tissue by state-of-the-art MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry was used to identify specific PK/PK-related peptides native to eight arthropod pest species [house (M. domestica), stable (S. calcitrans), horn (H. irritans) & flesh (N. bullata) flies; Southern cattle fever tick (B. microplus), European tick (I. ricinus), yellow fever mosquito (A. aegypti), & Southern Green Stink Bug (N. viridula)]; including the unprecedented identification of mass-identical Leu/Ile residues and the first identification of NPs from a tick or the CNS of Hemiptera. Evidence was obtained for the selection of Neb-PK-2 as the primary pupariation factor of the flesh fly (N. bullata) among native PK/PK-related candidates. The peptidomic techniques were also used to map the location of PK/PK-related NP in the nervous system of the model fly D. melanogaster. Knowledge of specific PK sequences can aid in the future design of species specific (or non-specific) NP agonists/antagonists. In addition, the study led to the first cloning of a PK/PBAN receptor from insect larvae (S. littoralis), providing the basis for SAR analysis for the future design of 2ⁿᵈgeneration selective and/or nonselective agonists/antagonists. Development of a microplate ligand binding assay using the PK/PBAN pheromone gland receptor was also carried out. The assay will enable screening, including high throughput, of various libraries (chemical, molecular & natural product) for the discovery of receptor specific agonists/antagonists. In summary, the body of work achieves several key milestones and brings us significantly closer to the development of novel, environmentally friendly pest insect management agents based on insect PK/PBANNPs capable of disrupting critical NP-regulated functions.

Öğrencilerin okuma becerilerini geliştirmek ve topluma okuma alışkanlığı kazandırmak amacıyla projeler üretmeyi ve bu alanda ücretsiz hizmet sunmayı görev edinen Oku Okut Derneği, 07 Aralık 2020 tarihinde Ankara’da kuruldu. Kanunlar çerçevesinde faaliyet gösteren bir sivil toplum kuruluşu olan Derneğimiz, toplum yararı için eğitim alanında sahip olduğu programlarla, okuma alışkanlığının artırılması amacıyla faaliyetler yürütmektedir. Oku Okut Derneği’nin misyonu; kendini, tarihini, kültürünü ve dünyayı bilme yolunda olan öğrencilerimize, bilimsel veriler ve uluslararası başarılı uygulama örnekleri perspektifinde okuma alışkanlığı kazandırmak ve bu alışkanlığın tüm toplumda yaygınlaşmasını sağlamaktır. Oku Okut Derneği’nin hedef kitlesi; öncelikle öğrencilerimiz, vatandaşlarımız ve yurt dışında yaşayan soydaşlarımızdır.
