Abstract:

Abstract:
This article attempts to localize the fortresses of the Volga Bulgars (first of all, fortresses Marj and Tehshu) known from medieval authors reportedly Najib Hamadani and Ahmed at-Tusi. In the course of solving this problem the question of these authors data reliability is raised, as well as the common source of this information borrowing. There is a good reason to see this in the source known among the Arab-Persian historical and geographical medieval manuscripts as Rizal by Ahmed ibn Fadlan, the Secretary of Abbasid embassy to the Volga Bulgars Elteber Almush, who visited the Volga in 922. This fact explains the absence of Bulgarian cities known from other sources in the given lists as well as the question of uniqueness of Hamadani and at-Tusis information. On the basis of the sources synthesis, place-and folklore studies, the article proposes some options for localization of some of these forts and etymology options of Bulgarian oikonyms mentioned in the papers by the considered authors. The author proves the importance of place names data at the present stage of Bulgar study research, especially of Volga Bulgaria historical geography as well as further studies are planned.

Abstract:
The article considers coins of the Bulgar minting of the Golden Horde Khan Pulad (1407–1410), deposited in the Izmery treasure. The total number of dirhams with the name of this khan reaches 220 copies. When studying the weight characteristics of coins, it was found that the mode corresponds to the value of 0.73 ± 0.02 g. Having studied the elemental composition of the surface layer of coin metal 50 dirhams, the authors established the amount of silver, copper and other elements: silver – 80.8–82.7%; copper – 15.2–16.9%; gold – 0.5%, the remaining components – about 1.7%. A comparison of the weight and elemental composition of the surface layer of the coins of Pulad and the previous ruler – Khan Shadibek, helped establish a slight decrease in the weight of Bulgar coins. The authors conclude that under Pulad in the Bulgar region there were no changes in coinage in the form of reforms.

Abstract:
Research objectives: The “Mustafad al-akhbar…” is one of the earliest and most important works on the history of the Bulgars and their descendants – the Tatars. After evaluating this source, we can rightly say that it is the first attempt at a scholarly description and analysis of the history of the Bulgars and Tatars. To achieve this purpose, Sh. Marjani used a large array of different sources, among which a special place was occupied by theological sources. In revealing religious life, the theologian used mainly written sources, but he did not limit himself to quoting them. The presentation of these texts is accompanied by Sh. Marjnani’s analysis of the information’s reliability. The author compares the facts and makes reasonable conclusions about the biographies of theologians, as well as the content of their works. The purpose of the study is to identify the authors’ names and the titles of their theological works that Sh. Marjani used in the first volume of the mentioned work. Research materials: The source basis of the study was the first volume of the “Mustafad al-akhbar…” by Sh. Marjani, as well as reference works by Muslim biographers. Throughout the study, the author used the methods of analysis and synthesis, as well as the historical and comparative method. Research results: This study established the titles of the theological treatises to which Sh. Marjani referred in the first volume of the “Mustafad al-akhbar…”, their content, the names of their authors, and years of their deaths. The study of the personalities of theologians and their works has allowed for a division of them into respective Bulgar and Golden Horde periods. However, it should be noted that Sh. Marjani partly goes beyond these periods and mentions some theologians who lived after the conquest of the Kazan Khanate in 1552. Research novelty: The author described, for the first time ever, the titles and topics of theological works mentioned in the first volume of the “Mustafad al-akhbar…”. Also, he identified the names of their authors and divided the works according to a historical principle into the works of the Bulgar and Golden Horde periods.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Research objectives: To reveal the radical change in money circulation in the second half of the fourteenth century, using the example of the coin hoards of the Bulgar ulus and the 199 excavation of the Bolgar settlement. Research materials: These include the hoards of the Bolgar settlement, the Karatunsky hoard, and counter-minted coins from the 199 excavation of the Bolgar settlement. Results and novelty of the research: The city of Bolgar began to resume minting coins after it was annexed to the ulus of Jochi. The earliest such coins were minted on behalf of the Caliph an-Nasir and the Great Khans, Möngke and Ariq Böke. After the establishment of the Golden Horde, Bolgar minted coins on behalf of Mengu-Timur and subsequent rulers, as well as many anonymous and unepigraphic coins that have been found deposited in hoards. Hoards are an indicator of changes in monetary circulation in the ulus and they increased significantly during the reign of Toqtamish Khan. Counter-minted and trimmed coins appeared due to a shortage of coins; this is a characteristic feature of the monetary circulation of the Bulgar ulus.

Abstract:
The specificity of the formation of facade and spatial solutions of large spectacular buildings in Kazan is considered in the context of national and regional traditions. Ornamental and decorative systems, adapted to the architectural and artistic styles that existed in this period were identified. The main approaches to the design of large spectacular buildings in the context of national and regional traditions in the architectural practice of Kazan in the middle and the end of the XX century were identified as follows: - based on the use of the dominant styles in the considered periods (classics with the ideological concept of socialism, modernism, postmodernism), adapted to the architectural traditions of the decorative system of the Middle Volga region; - based on the use of modern finishing materials – ceramics, majolica, natural stone, which has references to the traditions of facing the facades of Bulgar buildings with limestone and glazed tiles. The architects of the middle and the end of the XX century laid the foundations of modern regional-national architecture and the methodology for the formation of a decorative-artistic system that combines the stylistic techniques of classicism, modernism, postmodernism with techniques which had references to the Bulgar-Tatar traditions.

Abstract:
The article examines the history of relations between the Bashkirs and the Volga Bulgars based on written sources (Arab-Muslim, Mongolian and Western European) and archaeological data. The study analyzes the earliest historical information preserved in the geographical tradition of al-Balkhi, represented by such authors of the 10th century as al-Istakhri and Ibn Haukal, as well as in the work of the 12th century geographer al-Idrisi. Special attention is paid to the problem of political affiliation of the Сhiyalik culture tribes, which, according to most scientists, were of Ugric origin. On this basis, they are figuratively called “Eastern Hungarians” in historical literature. The article concludes that the majority of Сhiyalik tribes were a part of the Bashkir polity already in the 10th century. At least, the 13th century Western European authors (Rubruck, Plano Carpini) equated Bashkiria with “Great Hungary” (Magna Hungaria). However, some of Сhiyalik tribes recognized the suzerainty of the Volga Bulgars. These, apparently, should include the Bashkir tribe Bulyar, which corresponds to the “land of Bular”, mentioned in the Hungarian chronicle “Gesta Hungarorum” and by al-Gharnati (12th century) as a part of Volga Bulgaria. With the beginning of the Mongol invasion in the Ural-Volga region, the Bashkirs accepted the Chingissids’ offer of an alliance, after which they participated in the conquest of Volga Bulgaria and in campaigns on the territory of other Eastern European countries.

Abstract:
Notes by Ahmad ibn Fadlan and Obsequies of the Noble Rus in Bulgar by H. Siemiradsky In the book Historical Sketches of Folk Literature in Art F.I. Buslaev developed the idea that „getting closer to their primitive source, the elements of literature and art enter each other; and sometimes the author becomes an illustrator of his manuscript; and so a literary historian often through miniatures decorating the manuscript understands the idea of the text before it opens in its lines”. The validity of these lines becomes apparent when we compare the passage from the Notes by ibn Fadlan to Henryk Siemiradzki’s Obsequies of the Noble Rus in Bulgar, located in the State Historical Museum in Moscow.
