Abstract:
The paper raises the question of the relationship between the Christian religion and Bulgarian literature as it is regarded as one of the “big questions” in modern Bulgarian culture. This article takes / assumes as its starting point an established belief, one that has been repeatedly discredited, that Bulgarian literature is “quite poor in terms of philosophical and moral-religious motives” (Boyan Penev). The notion of “small nation,” which is a reference to a famous concept by Miroslav Hroch, serves as a call to reconsider traditionally accepted classifications and taxonomies in specific per

The aim of the paper is an attempt to problematise the concept of Bulgarian Orthodox identity in relation to the national “great narrative” and the role of literature and literary studies, and as a result, to go beyond the traditional research approach to the notion of Bulgarian religiosity. Two observations serve as a starting point: 1) the idea of religion / religiosity is one of the main themes of the discourse of the national elite; 2) Bulgarians commonly declare attachment to the Orthodox tradition, but the percentage of believers is low; therefore, the sociological conceptualisations bas

Beginning his career as a financial official, political activist and founder of one of the first xenophobic organizations, after the First World War he devoted himself entirely to religious activities: he founded the “Good Samaritan” Religious Society (1921), became leader and ideologist of the Orthodox Holy Society for Spiritual Renewal of the Bulgarian people (1924), of the "Greater (Peaceful) Bulgaria" Union (Political Party) (1926–1944), of the "St. Joh

The type of poetry practiced by Jan Kochanowski is entirely foreign to Bulgarian literature, which until the mid-19th century was mainly devoted to religious writing and was not significantly influenced by Western literature. Nevertheless, the works of our Renaissance master are known in Bulgaria as they have been translated into Bulgarian since the 1980s. Jan Kochanowski's texts were translated by two outstanding translators: Ivan Valev and Panayot Karagyozov. It is based on the example of a key figure of Bulgarian socialist political life and health system – Dr Vladimir Kalaydzhiev (1921-2009). As a result of three decades of social-cultural transformation, Bulgarian literature and practice of religious education though still rare is increasing and improving. As the Church recovers, local parishes, monasteries, and convents become visibly re-socialised and motivated again to provide more adequate pastoral care for all ages. This study explores the importance of informal improvisation and innovation as an approach, in the best interest of children and youth, at a time when an effective, regulated mass public religious education system in Bulgaria is not likely to appear soon. Unlike other aspects of Islamic doctrine, early eschatology entails a more emotional and sensual sacred imagery system subsequently turning into a rich source of motifs and allusions for various interpretations not only in Muslim tradition itself but also in the cultural perceptions of the Other among non-Muslims. Traditionally, the dialects located outside our state borders are defined as "mixed" dialects. The reason for this is that they are influenced by the official language of the country within which borders they are located, or by neighboring languages of important significance to the community from a religious, social or other point of view. The "mixed" character of the territorial speech is most noticeable at the lexical level, since the lexical paradigm of the dialect is the one that changes the fastest, because it is most susceptible to external influences, which allows politically biased spe

This study covers the literary, critical, theoretical, and film works of three Bulgarian immigrant intellectuals in France: Julia Kristeva (1940 - ), Maria Koleva (1941 - ), and Tzvetan Todorov (1939 - ). Through their own exile during the Cold war, they reconstruct in their works the way East and West, both flexible constructions, perceive each other. We focus on Bulgaria and France---countries representing East and West respectively. The cult of the Seven Slavic Saints, also known as Saints Heptaritmoi, occurred during the Bulgarian Revival and grew as a typical religious veneration. The cult has developed over time, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the saints became characters in literary works.
