Abstract:
This commentary seeks to extend and interrogate the notion of ‘climate-as-condition’ deployed in Bulkeley’s paper. It does so by proposing that we complement the focus on how climate change is currently being made and remade, rather than appearing as a problem to which we respond, with an interrogation of the historical production of climate change by particular social forces and processes. In doing this, it seeks another way to insist on the centrality of the social sciences in understanding climate change. But it also suggests that the sorts of vignettes that Bulkeley develops may be understood differently if they are situated historically.

Abstract:
Harriet Bulkeley identifies a persistent, and misconceived, framing of climate change as a ‘society–nature problem’ (Bulkeley H (2019). Navigating climate's human geographies: exploring the whereabouts of climate politics. Dialogues in Human Geography 9(1): 3–17). While I concur with her diagnosis, her implied cure begins with geographers volunteering to change their intellectual habits by responding to ‘good arguments’. I challenge this cognitivism and ask what sorts of material frameworks for inquiry will engender an embrace of the idea of ‘climate as condition’.

Abstract:
While agreeing with the major tenets of Harriet Bulkeley’s timely and powerful argument for geographers (and social scientists more generally) to engage with climate change, this response raises three provocative challenges that arise from this intervention: the degree to which the epistemological and theoretical bases to these arguments are radical, the nature of the engagement problem in the discipline and, perhaps most importantly, how these arguments can be translated to a ‘progressive politics’. The response argues that there is much further to go in explaining the utility of socio-natural understanding of climate change if those beyond the social sciences and in the wider realm of policy and politics are to be convinced of the power of the approach being advocated. It also argues that geographers are well-positioned to develop the bolder and more interdisciplinary approach needed to achieve the kind of ambitious shift in thinking Bulkeley seeks.

Abstract:
In this study, we investigate the shifting of modes of governing municipal waste, from disposal (waste-to-landfill) to waste as a resource (sustainable recycling). To this end, we frame this study combining the modes of governing approach developed by Bulkeley, Watson and Hudson with Bruno Latour’s sociology of translation approach (or Actor-Network Theory). Within this double framework, we investigate practices that emerge from the attempts made by multiple stakeholders to shift modes of governing waste. This study contributes to the modes of governing waste in particular and, to environmental policy implementation studies in general. We posit that shifting governing modes involves (i) the construction of human–non-human networks that support the stabilization of a particular governing mode; (ii) consideration of the role of non-humans, their agency and materiality and; (iii) the acknowledgement that counter-networks and unintended consequences are likely to emerge. When we add to this view the role of politics, a more complex, dynamic and rich picture of the phenomenon surfaces.

Abstract:
The art of writing can be seen when, according to Gauding (2009), "authors use symbols to evoke more than a simple, straightforward, literal meaning". In addition to symbols, the art of poetic writing – Parallelism – emphasizes sounds and ideas in the parallel elements through repetition, development or contrast. However, most research on parallelism was done in poetic or biblical writing. This paper points out symbolic representation highlighted through parallelism in the prose-style novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. It explores how symbols categorized by Pickering and Hoeper (1986) were illustrated through types of parallelism by Lowth (1753), Bullinger (1898), Bulkeley (2001), McCoy (2003), Parry (2007) and Kostenberger and Patterson (2011). The results showed that symbols were represented mainly through semantic parallelism which is used to compare people, things and events using literary devices, and clarification parallelism which conveys additional information about the content. It is hoped that this paper will be useful for teachers teaching Dickens' style found in A Tale of Two Cities with a focus on symbols and parallel structures.

Abstract:
The disposal of municipal solid waste can be costly and environmentally destructive. This article asks why, given many alternatives, most waste material is still disposed of in landfills or incinerators. Building upon the ‘modes of governing’ framework proposed by Bulkeley, Watson, and Hudson as a means of identifying and interpreting the relationships among the many actors and artefacts that constitute a municipal solid waste management system, this article explores the barriers to transitioning between modes. The case of solid waste management in Boston, Massachusetts illustrates how key factors – limited enforcement of existing policy, institutional and physical fragmentation, financial incentives, and the vested interests of the private sector – protect the disposal mode of governing. Meanwhile, the actors most interested in moving towards more sustainable waste management techniques lack access to decision-making processes and daily operations, limiting their ability to influence policy and practice. The analysis of barriers suggests an alternative way of classifying modes – dominant, incremental, visionary, and aspirational – that explicitly captures the relative entrenchment of each mode, while also opening up the framework for application in other geographies, and for other systems that may or may not share similar governmental rationalities, technologies, or capacities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe Russian South Pole expedition carried out in 1819–1821 was an early milestone in the scientific exploration of the Antarctic. The expedition took place under the command of the Baltic German Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. Bellingshausen came from the Island of Saaremaa in Estonia. The Russian empire, and followed by the Soviet Union, did not attach much importance to Bellingshausen's expedition. It was only after World War II as the question of the Antarctic received close attention that the Bellingshausen expedition received political significance in the Soviet Union. The fact that the expedition really took place was used by the Soviet Union to claim rights to the Antarctic and also to argue for its participation in Antarctic exploration (see Tammiksaar 2007; Bulkeley 2011). In the early stages of exploration of the continent, Estonians were given the opportunity to carry out investigations there. The first Estonian research programme in the Antarctic, on noctilucent clouds, was elaborated by the astronomer Charles Villmann. Altogether some tens of Estonians have visited the southern continent performing investigations in earth sciences, atmospheric physics, hydrology and ecology of surface waters and the human influence on them. They have also carried out isotope studies of the ice sheet to reconstruct environmental conditions in the past.

Full text
Abstract:
Greenspace can alleviate many of the negative effects of urbanization and help enhance human well-being yet, in most cities in the world, greenspace is inequitably distributed. In western societies, wealthy white neighborhoods typically have more access to greenspace, constituting an environmental and social justice issue. Although scholars from multiple disciplines and academic domains study questions of justice in greenspace, the scholarship remains fragmented. The purpose of this qualitative review is to explore the diverse disciplinary approaches to justice in urban greenspace to identify patterns and trends in how justice is conceptualized and realized. We analyze a set of case studies across multiple disciplines using a sample of 21 peer-reviewed articles following the framework set out by Bulkeley and colleagues that conceptualizes justice according to recognition, distribution, procedures, rights, and responsibilities. Our results suggest that the various solutions proposed in the diverse streams of scholarship often call for solutions that transcend individual disciplinary boundaries. This finding supports the need for collaborative and cross-disciplinary work to effectively address injustice in urban greenspace. In an effort to integrate findings, we identify five main objectives that need to be addressed by scholars, built environment practitioners, and policymakers, which include: (1) appropriate funding mechanisms for long-term maintenance; (2) recognition of safety concerns; (3) connectivity of greenspace; (4) multifunctionality in greenspace design; and (5) community engagement.

Abstract:
Abstract This study elucidates the effects of composition and temperature on the rheological behavior of chocolate milk formulation. The fat [0.5, 1 and 1.5 g] and xanthan gum contents [0.05, 0.1 and 0.15 g] varied and shear stress-strain rate data were recorded at varying temperature [21.4, 65 and 80 °C]. All compositions showed predominantly a pseudoplastic behavior [i.e., pseudoplasticity index, n < 1] with a strong influence on composition and temperature. Three semi-empirical rheological models, i.e. Power-law, Herschel–Bulkely, and Casson models were fitted on the data using an in-house developed computer program for the best statistical fit. The pseudoplasticity index [n] varied with the composition that initially decreased with temperature and subsequently increased. The other model parameters such as consistency index [k], Casson and Herschel–Bulkely yield stress, and Casson viscosity [at a specified rate i.e., 34.7 s−1] were computed through model fitting and correlated to the microstructural changes inside the fluid keeping in view the composition and temperature. This study helps in correlating chocolate milk processing and quality control based on complex microstructure to the rheological parameters measured at simulated temperatures and shear rates.

Assays were carried out at temperatures 20, 30 and 40 °C and the experimental results were adjusted by the model-to-Ostwalde Waelle, Casson and Herschel Bulkey Mizrahi-Berk, using the STATISTICA software, version 7.0. The yogurt analyzed in this experiment showed behavior of pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluid characteristics. The rheological models Hershel Bulkey and Mizrahi-Berk satisfactorily represented the rheological behavior of the hog plum yogurt at different temperatures studied, with correlation coefficients (R²) above 0.99.

Abstract:
Antiplatelet drugs block the formation of blood clots by preventing the clumping of platelets inside arteries, particularly in individuals who have atherosclerosis of their arteries, or are otherwise prone to develop blood clots in their arteries. Atherosclerosis is a slow disease in which arteries become clogged and hardened. Fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances form plaque, which builds up in arteries. Hard plaque narrows the passage that blood flows through. That causes arteries to become hard and inflexible. Soft plaque is more likely to break free from the artery wall and cause a blood clot, which can block blood flow to vital organs. In this paper an attempt has been made to investigate the effects of antiplatelet drugs on blood flow and significance of non-Newtonian viscosity through a stenosed artery using Herschel-Bulkely fluid model. Numerical illustration presented at the end of the paper provides the results for the resistance to flow, apparent viscosity and the wall shear stress through their graphical representations.
